Hard work won over Harvard: Modi With India’s GDP in third quarter clocking 7 percent growth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flays economists who predicted lower growth due to the November 8 note ban IANS, MAHARAJGANJ (UTTAR PRADESH)
Rural sector not hit hard: Jaitley
I
n the wake of encouraging GDP growth figures released a day earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that “hard work has won over Harvard-educated economists” who had predicted otherwise. “Well-known intellectuals from Harvard and Oxford (universities), who have been at key positions in the Indian economic system, had said the Gross Domestic Product will go down by two percent; some others said it will go down by four percent,” Modi said at an election rally here. “On one hand, there are these intellectuals who talk about Harvard, and on the other, there is this son of a poor mother, who is trying to change the country’s
BRIEFS Thousands of Jats protest for quota NEW DELHI: Taking their quota stir to the national capital, several thousand Jat community members protested at the Jantar Mantar here on Thursday, pressing for reservation in jobs and educational institutions. Agitators from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Punjab assembled here with their demands, which also includes jobs to the next of kin of those killed in the 2016 violent agitation, withdrawal of cases against the Jats and action against officers who were involved. Violence during the February 2016 agitation by Jats across several districts in Haryana left 30 people dead.
India test-fires anti-ship missile from submarine MUMBAI: Reaching a milestone in enhancing its sub-surface warfare capability, the Indian Navy on Thursday successfully test-fired an anti-ship missile from the first of indigenously-built Kalvari class submarines in the Arabian sea. “The missile successfully hit a surface target at extended ranges during the maiden firing this morning,” an official statement said. “This missile launch is a significant milestone, not only for the Kalvari, which is the first in a series of Scorpene-class submarines being built in India, but also in enhancing the Navy’s subsurface warfare capability,” the statement added.

economy through hard work.” Whether Harvard will win or hard work — farmers, laborers and honest people of the country have already proved it, he said. “Hard work is more powerful than Harvard. India is among the world’s fastest growing economies,” Modi said.
“The GDP figures came out yesterday (Tuesday), and it is proved that despite demonetization, honest and hardworking people of India — villagers, farmers and the youths — did not allow the country’s development to get hampered,” he said. The Prime Minister’s remarks
NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said that the Q3 GDP growth figure of 7 percent belies apprehensions on the effect of demonetization on growth. “I think, the GDP data for Q3 really reflects the position,” he said. The figures also belie exaggerated claims made by many that the rural sector was heavily in distress, Jaitley said. India’s GDP for the third quarter ended December, estimated at Rs 30.28 trillion, recorded a growth of 7 percent, official data showed on Tuesday. Industry said the figures were in line with expectations.
come in the backdrop of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen dubbing the November 8 demonetization -- in which Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were scrapped — as a “despotic action that has struck at the root of economy based on trust”. Sen is Professor of Economics and Philosophy at the Harvard University. Modi’s predecessor Manmohan Singh, a senior Congress leader, too had in December called the demonetization a “monumental mismanagement”, adding that the GDP could shrink by 2 percentage points due to the manner it was implemented. India’s GDP for the third quarter ending December 31 stood at Rs 30.28 trillion, recording a growth of seven percent, compared with 7.3 percent in the second quarter, official data released on Tuesday said.
Congress demands Rijiju’s resignation IANS, NEW DELHI
C
alling Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur “the daughter of Punjab”, the Congress on Wednesday said Union Minister Kiren Rijiju should resign for his statements regarding her and also slammed the ABVP in the wake of rape threats to her. Slamming the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad, the students wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the Congress said the
“behavior of the ABVP was an insult to the armed forces”. “Rijiju, instead of protecting her, has actually questioned her patriotism,” said Congress leader Manpreet Singh Badal. Rijiju had earlier tweeted: “Who’s polluting this young girl’s mind?” Gurmehar, 20, is in the eye of a political storm over her campaign against the ABVP following the February 22 violence at Ramjas College in Delhi. Trouble erupted in the otherwise placid Delhi Uni-

the campus, triggering widespread condemnation. Gurmehar then launched a social media campaign against the ABVP, only to face death and rape threats. On Tuesday she left Delhi for Punjab, saying she was pulling out of the campaign.

P
opular Gujarati humorist Taarak Mehta, whose work inspired the hit Hindi sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, died here aged 88 on Wednesday morning after a prolonged illness, his family said. A string of politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, condoled his demise and expressed gratitude towards him for bringing a smile to their face with his works. “He died of old age,” said Atul Bhatt, a relative of the writer, who was well-known in the Gujarati theatre circuit and wrote a popular column for a daily. Chashmah that has been running since 2008. His knack of looking at contemporary issues from a different perspective was lauded, and
his literary work always generated a good dose of laughter. Modi recounted how Mehta “never left the side of satire and pen”. Reminiscing about his meetings with Mehta, Modi said: “I have had the privilege of meeting Mehta several times. I also got a chance to meet him when he was honored with Padma Shri. His work reflects unity in diversity in India.” Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore said his “humor made us all smile on many a blue day”. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani tweeted: “Saddened by the death of Tarak Mehta — humorist and columnist. He always brought smile to our faces. My condolences to family members.”

Trump’s fresh immigration plan may help Indians
US President Donald Trump feels the country should give out green cards using a merit-based system alike Canada and Australia, instead of its current outdated programme ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
U
S President Donald Trump’s proposal for a merit-based immigration system has the potential to benefit Indians, a large number of whom have high levels of education and skills. However, the way it is implemented will show the finer details. In his State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress, Trump said the US should give out green cards using a merit-based system similar to those of Canada and Australia in place of its current “outdated” programme. By not following such a system, he said the US was “straining the very public resources that our poorest citizens rely upon. “Switching away from this current system of lower-skilled immigration, and instead adopting a merit-based system, will have many benefits: it will save countless dollars, raise workers’ wages,
and help struggling families — including immigrant families — enter the middle class,” he said. Trump did not make any mention of those working in the US on temporary professional work visas known as H-1B. In earlier speeches, he had said that he would root out abuses in

Those who qualify for H1-B visas under more stringent conditions either imposed by the Trump Administration or by a bill intro-
duced jointly by a Republican and a Democratic in Congress would likely have a leg up in the merit system. Trump did not spell out how the merit-based system would work. On the face of it, Indians would make a good fit for a merit-based system going by the community’s current profile. A report by the Pew Research Center reveals that 70 per cent of Indians in the US are college graduates. The US Census Bureau reported that in 2013, the median household income for Indian families was over $100,000. But there are other factors such as whether the current national quotas or limits on people from any country who could be admitted in a year are retained could ultimately determine how it plays out for Indians. The proposal will have to clear many hurdles. First of all, it will run into opposition mainly from the Democratic Party which would argue that it would not help the

poor and the unskilled immigrate to the US and discriminate against immigrants from Latin American countries whom the party counts as a key part of its base. A way out for Trump might be to barter the merit-based reform for allowing some illegal immigrants to stay on in the country. In Canada, applicants for immigration are given points for differ-
ent qualifications like education, skill levels, employability, language and family ties. Currently, the US immigration system restricts the number of people who can immigrate from each country to seven percent of the total number allowed in except for immediate relatives of citizens. This has led to several years’ wait for Indians to get their green cards.
UP elections: Any gains for Congress-SP alliance? The results on March 11 will decide if the Congress’ decision to ally with the Samajwadi Party and contest about a fourth of 403 seats in UP will set the stage for party’s revival SIDHARTHA DUTTA, NEW DELHI
T
he Congress has much at stake in the outcome of assembly elections in five states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, where its decision to abandon the original plan of contesting all seats is being viewed with some scepticism even within its own ranks. The results on March 11 will decide if the Congress decision to ally with the Samajwadi Party and contest about a fourth of 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh will set the stage for the party’s revival in the country’s most populous state or make its path more difficult. The Uttar Pradesh results are also likely to have a bearing on the party’s thinking on forging future alliances. The Congress is hoping that the

results in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa will end its electoral drought since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, when it could manage only 44 seats in the
545-member house, which has 543 elected members. The party has not won a major state on its own since that debacle. Quite apart from losing Assam,
Kerala, Maharashtra and Rajasthan in the assembly elections, the reverses in local body elections in Maharashtra and Odisha have added to the challenges faced by the party. The Congress entered into an alliance with the Samajwadi Party led by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in an apparent bid to stop its main electoral rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), from coming to power in Uttar Pradesh. It settled for 105 seats after some hard bargaining with the Samajwadi Party, which is contesting the remaining 298. Before its alliance in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress had been critical of the performance of the Samajwadi Party. The Congress had coined the slogan “Sataees saal, UP behaal. (UP has been in abysmal state for the past 27 years) to
remind the people of its own rule in the 1980s and convey that the BJP, Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party had failed to deliver. There were also noises that the Congress could offer outside support to the Shiv Sena to enable it to claim the mayor’s post in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation after the elections to the 227-member house threw up a 84-82 verdict with the BJP claiming the latter figure, but these were quickly shot down. As per political experts, going into alliance in UP was a logical option for Congress. Columnist and political commentator Ashok Malik feels there was “no evidence of the Congress reviving itself in Uttar Pradesh” and, therefore, an “alliance was the only alternative” in its goal to stop the BJP.

P
resident Donald Trump has denounced the killing of an Indian techie in Kansas and endorsed a “merit-based” system focused on allowing highskilled workers into the US. Trump began his first address to Congress at the Capitol Hill by condemning the fatal attack on Srinivas Kuchibhotla, saying the country “stands united in condemning hate and evil”. “Last week’s shooting in Kansas city reminds us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms,” he said. A White House spokeswoman said the shooting appeared to be “an act of racially motivated hatred”. “The President is keeping the family of the victim, who was senselessly killed, in his thoughts, and we’re praying for the full and speedy recovery of those wounded,” Trump’s Principal Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Sander said. “We want to reiterate that the

he said the US was “straining the very public resources that our poorest citizens rely upon”. However, Trump made no mention of those working in the US on temporary professional work visas known as H-1B. Trump also called on Congress to repeal and replace Obamacare with “reforms that expand choice, increase access, lower costs, and provide better healthcare”. The Affordable Care Act, signed by former President Barack Obama, was designed to increase health insurance quality and affordability, lower the uninsured rate and reduce the costs of healthcare. He also vowed to take a hard line against “radical Islamic terrorism”. And the President paid a moving tribute to Ryan Owens, the US Navy SEAL team member killed in the January 27 raid on a suspected Al Qaeda compound in Yemen. Owens widow’s Carryn received an emotional standing ovation. “Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and a hero, battling against terrorism and securing our nation,” Trump said.
BRIEFS New order to drop Iraq from travel ban WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s new immigration order will remove Iraq from the list of countries whose citizens face a temporary US travel ban. A White House official who has seen the latest version of the order told Politico that the new order is also believed to temporarily halt all refugee admissions, but no longer single out Syrian refugees for an indefinite ban. And unlike the hastily signed original order, the new version is not expected to affect green card holders or people already in possession of US visas.

asked Singhal to resign because Singhal did not disclose the investigation. Uber declined to comment further. Google also declined to comment. Singhal’s departure comes at a time when Uber is facing intense scrutiny following allegations of sexual harassment by a former female employee against her manager. Susan Fowler and other current and former employees have claimed that the company’s human resource officials repeatedly ignored harassment claims about employees who were “top performers.” Uber asked Eric H. Holder Jr., who served as Attorney General under President Barack Obama, to investigate those claims. Singhal, a highly-respected engineer in Silicon Valley, had joined Uber in January, said the report.

enying its own involvement, Pyongyang on Wednesday accused Seoul and Washington of killing a North Korean, believed to be Kim Jong-un’s half-brother, without acknowledging the deceased as such. In a dispatch from Pyongyang, the North’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the person was a North Korean citizen named “Kim Chol,” carrying a diplomatic passport. “The cause of his death has not yet been clearly identified but the US and the South Korean authorities are groundlessly blaming North Korea, asserting that he was intoxicated by highly-poisonous VX nerve substance,” the KCNA report said. The two suicide attacks took place on Wednesday, targeting a police station and intelligence agency offices. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attacks, reported Tolo News. Condemning the bombings, President Ashraf Ghani said: “After the killing of (prominent commander) Mullah Salam and the Taliban’s defeat on many other fronts, the terrorists are launching such attacks to raise the morale of their fighters.” The first of attacks began when a suicide car bomber detonated his explosives outside a police station — next door to a military training facility - in the west of the city. This was followed by a six-hour gun battle between officers and another attacker. Soon afterwards, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside Afghanistan’s intelligence agency — National Directorate of Security (NDS) office — in eastern Kabul. All the victims in the second strike were NDS employees, officials said. HYDERABAD: Sunayna Dumala, the wife of Indian techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla who was shot dead in Kansas in a hate crime last week, has said that she will return to the US to fulfill his dream. Sunayna, who came here with the body of Srinivas, revealed this in a heart-wrenching Facebook post, which went viral. While Srinivas’s mother said she will not allow her younger son Sai Kishore to return to the US, Sunayna is determined to resume life in Kansas where the couple had moved few years ago with dreams and built their house. “This is my Srinu’s dream, and it is the least I could do for my Srinivas — fulfill his dreams through my eyes — and it is for this I have to come back to the USA,” she wrote while thanking Congressman Kevin
Yoder and Senator Jerry Moran for working on her migration status. Srinivas was on H1B visa while Sunayna was on H4 dependent visa. Her Facebook post assumes significance in the wake of reports that US authorities may not allow her to enter the country. Srinivas, 32, was killed and his friend Alok Madasani was injured when Adam Purinton, a white man who earlier served in the US Navy, shot them at the Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas state. Srinivas and Alok were working as aviation programme managers at Garmin. Recalling their meeting in 2006, long friendship and marriage in 2012, she wrote that Srinivas gave her the courage to pursue her dream of coming to the US and studying and this made her an independent and self-sufficient woman.

Om Puri honored for rare realism LOS ANGELES: Indian actor Om Puri, whose repertoire as an actor reflected a rare realism and was popular for films like East Is East, Gandhi, City of Joy and Wolf, was honored at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony in the “In Memoriam” montage. Om Puri, who died after a heart attack in January earlier this year, got a musical tribute by Grammy and Tony-nominated singer and songwriter Sara Bareilles. Bareilles delivered a special performance of the Joni Mitchell song ‘Both sides now’. A visibly emotional actress Jennifer Aniston introduced the memoriam segment. Om Puri was remembered at the awards ceremony. Om Puri was known for his deep baritone and different acting style, as well as craggy, pockmarked but distinctive face.
while Dev was nominated for his role in Lion, and Sunny stood out when he acted like baby Simba from “The Lion King” on being lifted by Oscars’ host Jimmy Kimmel. Even India-set films The Jungle Book — which won for Visual Effects — and Lion — which won none of its six nominations — found their moment at the Oscars. Overall, La La Land took the lion’s share of six honors, including Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director for 32-year-old Damien Chazelle, who made history by becoming the youngest Best Director Oscar winner. The film’s lead actor Ryan Gosling lost in the Best Actor to Casey Affleck’s grieving brother act in Manchester by the Sea. La La Land also missed out on - in an ‘oops’ moment — the Best Picture trophy to Moonlight. In an unprecedented gaffe, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land
LOS ANGELES: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said it regrets “the mistakes that were made” after the wrong film was announced as the Best Picture winner at the 89th Academy Awards gala. The gaffe occurred when veteran actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong envelope. Dunaway announced the winner for the Best Picture category for La La Land, but minutes later the producers of Moonlight were informed that it was actually their film that had won the award. The Academy said in a statement: “We deeply regret the mistakes that were made during the presentation of the Best Picture category during last night’s Oscar ceremony. We apologize to the entire cast and crew of La La Land and Moonlight whose experience was profoundly altered by this error.” “We salute the tremendous grace they displayed under the circum-
as the winner in the Best Picture category, when in fact it was Moonlight. The La La Land makers were mostly through their speech before the error was realized, and the film’s producer Jordan Horowitz said in a statement: “There’s a mistake... Moonlight, you guys won Best Picture... This is not a joke, I’m afraid they read the wrong thing.” All said and done, the winners, in a pleasant change, were ‘not-sowhite’. The Best Picture went to Moonlight, about a young black man growing up in Miami. Viola Davis won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role Academy Award
stances. To all involved - including our presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, the filmmakers, and our fans watching worldwide - we apologize.” The statement also mentioned that for the last 83-years, the Academy has entrusted auditor firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to handle the critical tabulation process, including the accurate delivery of results. The gala was marred by a second goof-up where in the ‘In Memoriam’ segment, a photograph of living Australian producer Jan Chapman was mistakenly used against late costume designer Janett Patterson’s name.

Dev, who was running for the Best Supporting Actor trophy for Lion, lost out the Oscar to Moonlight star Mahershala Ali, who became the first Muslim actor to take home the golden statuette. Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney won for Best Adapted Screenplay for Moonlight, and director Ezra Edelman won alongside filmmaker Caroline Waterlow for Best Documentary Feature for O.J.: Made in America. The 89th Academy Award also saw were memorable performances as well.

T MUMBAI: She took everyone by storm with her power-packed performance as the policewoman in Mardaani, and then took time off for motherhood. Now, actress Rani Mukerji is returning to the big screen with Hichki, which she says is built on a positive response. To be directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Maneesh Sharma under the Yash Raj Films banner, Hichki will see Rani in a positive and inspiring story about a woman who turns her biggest weakness into her biggest strength. Talking about it, Rani said in a statement: “I was looking for a script that would challenge and excite me, and Hichki came my way.” “Each of us has a weakness that pulls us back. It could be a disability or any condition but if we just look at it as simply a hiccup, we can emerge as a winner. It won’t come in the way of achieving our dreams. R
angoon is director Vishal Bhardwaj’s monumental and rewarding work. It is a classic, weighed and measured by the style and manner of its narrative. Adapted from the English film Casablanca, it is a simple romance triangle set in India, circa 1943, against the backdrop of World War II. The plot, a trifle to hang the
emotions on, involves an ex-actor turned film producer Rustom Billimoria aka Rusi (Saif Ali Khan), his lover and muse Julia (Kangana
Ranaut) and the army personnel Jamadar Nawab Mallik (Shahid Kapoor) who is assigned to protect her during an arduous journey to
the border, where she is deputed to entertain the Indian Army, serving under the British. It is during this journey that the inevitable happens, she falls in love with Nawab Malik and soon realizes that she is torn between the two. Rangoon is Kangana’s canvas. She is the soul of the film as the perky actress modelled after the yesteryear’s heroine Fearless Nadia. Her role is more difficult than it might appear. What she does here is as extraordinary in its own way as Nadia did during her times. They are well-etched and their backstories make them wholesome.

New deportation policy will not touch DACA Youth BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -A new set of deportation priorities announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on February 20 will not immediately target undocumented youth who have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals protection, but may affect as many as 450,000 Indian residents living in the US without requisite immigration documents. DHS secretary John Kelly rolled out two memos that he said are in line with President Donald Trump’s January 25 executive order on border security and immigration enforcement. The new directives greatly expand the definition of “criminal aliens” to include those who have entered or re-entered the US illegally, committed visa fraud, received public benefits, or received a final order of removal. The memos also grant enforcement officials wide berth to determine as deportable someone who poses a risk to public safety or national security. Press secretary Sean Spicer clarified in a February 23 press briefing, noting that people who had overstayed a visa would be considered deportable. “We are a nation of laws, and we have to have a system of legal immigration that is respected,” he said.
Indian living in stolen car held
W
Previously, deportable criminal aliens were defined as those who had committed felony crimes. The memos also hasten deportation procedures and allow Customs and Border Patrol to determine at the border whether an arriving alien is eligible for entry–including those who have asked for asylum–without a further hearing or review. The directives also hasten the process of deportation for those currently awaiting a hearing on their application for asylum. At least 1,500 Indian nationals are being held at Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities around the country–some for longer than two years–waiting for their asylum case to be heard. Approximately 450,000 undocumented Indians currently live in the US, according to MPI data. India is the fastest-growing country for undocumented immigrants,
according to the Department of Homeland Security. Pr e s i d e n t B a r a c k O b a m a h a d implemented the DACA initiative--also known as the DREAM Act–in 2012. More than 1.7 million undocumented youngsters are currently eligible for the program; about 750,000 are currently receiving relief from deportation, work authorization, and driver’s licenses under the provisions of the initiative. About 17,000 Indian students are eligible for DACA, but only 3,608 have applied, according to statistics from the Migration Policy Institute. About 3,000 Indian students in California are eligible for DACA, noted the MPI. Shortly after he was elected last year, Trump set out what immigration activists have labelled “draconian” policies for immigrants, both legal and undocumented.

Home pays homage to the teachings of her father and guru Ravi Shankar. Her performance features two ragas, one of which is a creation of Ravi’s, and with them Anoushka shares an intimate, heartfelt live performance in the traditional style. Indian classical music is not written down, but has been improvised and passed down through an oral tradition for centuries; Home is a paradigm of this genre, exemplifying the unique dichotomy between the ancient structure and in-the-moment improvisations. She will be joined on stage by musicians playing shehnai, flute, tanpura, tabla and Indian percussion. Shankar has garnered several prestigious accolades, including six GrammyⓇ Award nominations, been recognized as the youngest, and first female, recipient of a British House of

Shama Mesiwala now Court Commissioner
BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- Indian Muslim American Shama Mesiwala, upon being sworn in as the Sacramento, Calif., Superior Court Commissioner on February 6, vowed to use her new job to represent her faith. The 42-year-old admittedly was surprised and overwhelmed with taking over the position but said she believes her being named is a “testament” to the court and its judges that they “put that trust and confidence in me, to see my integrity and temperament,” she said Mesiwala was sworn in by Sacramento Superior Court Presiding Judge Kevin Culhane. As commissioner, she can exercise the same powers and duties as trial court judges whether it be small-claims or serving as a temporary judge in a court case. Mesiwala is a senior judicial attorney for California’s 3rd District Court of Appeal, law professor and co-founder of the South Asian Bar Association of Sacramento. She will handle juvenile dependency cases, a passion of Mesiwala’s since her earliest days in law. Additionally, with the recent executive orders of President Donald Trump, including

a travel ban from seven Muslim-dominated countries, the court commissioner hopes her new position will lead to a better life for the country for immigrants. Mesiwala is a graduate of U.C. San Diego. While at the Southern California institution, an English professor urged her to enter the law industry and she followed up by going to U.C. Davis law school.
Before she turned 30, she was working on appellate courts and state Supreme Court cases. She then spent more than a decade as a judicial attorney in the 3rd District Court of Appeal but had bigger aspirations of sitting on the bench. Her work ethic led her to the post of commissioner, with many members of the legal and judicial communities commending her.
Indian businessman dupes lenders, held BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, TX -- The former Indian American owner of a Bostonarea chain of high-end jewelry stores is facing wire fraud charges after authorities say he created bogus inventory reports for lenders to receive larger loans. Raman Handa, formerly of Lexington, owned the now-closed Alpha Omega Jewelers. Federal prosecutors say in 2007 when the chain had trouble keeping up with loan payments, the 67-year-old Handa created a scheme to defraud lenders by lying about inventory reports used to determine credit limits. The reports included luxury watches and other items the chain didn’t actually have. After Handa left the US for India in 2007, the chain’s lender gained control of the company and discovered more than $7 million in missing or unaccounted for inventory.

Handa was arrested on February 21. He was arrested on wire fraud charges at Los Angeles International Airport as he returned to the United States from India,
more than nine years after he absconded to his native country with his family after allegedly scheming to defraud the chain’s lenders of millions of dollars.
One held for murder of Indian student BY A STAFF WRITER REMONT, CA -- A Fremont, Calif., man has been arrested, minutes after he allegedly fatally shot Telangana (India) native Vamshi Reddy Mamidala at an apartment complex parking garage in nearby Milpitas. Stuart Ison Baronngaue, 30, is being held at Santa Clara County’s North Main Jail, without bail. He was arraigned on February 16, and is being held on several charges including murder, robbery, felony evasion, and an outstanding felony warrant from nearby San Mateo County for parole violation. According to Lt. Raj Maharaj of the Milpitas Police Department, the incident began as Baronngaue crashed his car in Milpitas. He then got out of his car with two weapons and initially confronted a female

her car keys. The unnamed female victim gave Baronngaue her keys and told him where her car was in the apartment building’s parking structure. As the investigation is still active, Maharaj said he could not reveal how Baronngaue became engaged with Mamidala, who was also a resident in the apartment complex. Baronngaue allegedly shot Mamidala, and then fled in the South Indian man’s car. The police arrested him about 20 minutes later. Mamidala, 26, was found in the parking garage with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No motive has yet been established for the murder, said Maharaj, dispelling Indian media reports that the attack was a hate crime. Mamidala’s body was flown to Hyderabad on February 17.
Siminder Kaur with son Anhad
BY A STAFF WRITER OLLIENVILLE, TN -Collierville, Tennessee mother Siminder Kaur, who fought a 10-month battle to regain custody of her toddler son Anhad, was reunited with her child on February 22. The joyful mother said she has missed out on several crucial elements of her son’s development: when she last saw Anhad he was still crawling. The boy now walks around. Kaur had not seen her son–now two and a half years old–since October 2015. While attending a family wedding in Punjab, Kaur’s now-estranged husband Vaneet Singh convinced her to leave the infant boy with his parents while the couple worked out their marital difficulties in the US. But when Kaur asked that Anhad be returned home, she said her husband– from whom she is now seekib a divorce– was reluctant. “I realized this was a conspiracy to take my son away,” she said. The software developer went to India in April 2016, and began a protracted criminal and civil legal battle to get her America-born son home to the US. While in India, she said she was not once allowed to see her son during the five months she was there. Returning to the US, Kaur filed a criminal complaint, and on January 17, her case was decided in her favor. Singh was mandated to return Anhad to the US, and was arrested three weeks later when he failed to do so. As a condition of his bail, Singh was mandated to facilitate the return of his son to his mother and could have served federal prison time if he did not comply. Singh’s parents brought Anhad to the US onFebruary 22. Kaur said she has full custody of her son. Singh is not allowed visitation, as he has a restraining order which bars him from contact with Kaur. Kaur said she is afraid that should Singh eventually get unsupervised visitation, he could again take Anhad back to India. She noted that other parents have faced similar situations in which a child was taken out of the US without a passport or a visa. But for now, she is jubilant to be reunited with her son.

O’Keefe wins it for Aus Spinner O’Keefe’s returned 12/70 match figures that are the second best by a visiting bowler in India, behind Ian Botham’s 13/108 in Bombay 37 years ago IANS, PUNE
I
nspired by an all-round effort, Australia ended India’s 19match record unbeaten streak after thrashing the hosts by a mammoth 333 runs within three days of the opening Test at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here. Playing his first Test in the subcontinent, left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe turned out to be the dark horse, taking six wickets in each innings to break the backbone of the Indian batting as Virat Kohli tasted his first defeat as skipper of all three formats. Chasing a mammoth 441, the home side once again succumbed to the visiting spin duo of O’Keefe and Nathan Lyon to be dismissed for a paltry 107 in their second essay. The visitors have now taken a 1-0 lead in the four-match Test series. O’Keefe returned figures of 6/35 — the best of his nascent four-Test career while Lyon took 4/53. O’Keefe ended up with match figures of 12/70. Earlier, in the first innings, the 32-year-old left-armer had also registered figures of 6/35 to skittle the hosts out for 105 in response to Australia’s first innings score of 260. O’Keefe’s figures are the second best by a visiting bowler in India, behind Ian Botham’s 13/108 in Bombay 37 years ago. It is the

Gambhir supports Kaur; Sehwag clarifies stance NEW DELHI: Cricketer Gautam Gambhir voiced support for Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur, who is in the eye of a storm over her stance against student outfit Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and a video campaign advocating peace between India and Pakistan. Gambhir, who termed that mocking or “ganging up” against Kaur, a martyr’s daughter, for her views on the horrors of war was “despicable”, is in sharp contrast to his former India opening partner Virender Sehwag’s take on the issue. “We live in a free country where everyone is entitled to their opinion. If a daughter who lost her father puts up posts about the horrors of war with the intention of achieving peace she has all the right to,” Gambhir said in a video on Twitter. “It is not an opportunity for everyone to show how patriotic they are and gang up on her to mock her. She is entitled to her opinion just as
every other citizen is. Everyone may or may not agree with it but mocking her for it is despicable,” he added. Gambhir, in his statement, further said that he has utmost respect for the Indian Army, but the recent events have left him with a sense of disappointment. Meanwhile, Sehwag clarified that his social media post in reply to Kaur was an “attempt to be facetious” rather than one to bully anyone over their opinion. —IANS

India’s 20-Test unbeaten streak. The last time India lost a Test match at home was in 2012 when England registered a seven-wicket victory in Kolkata. Since then, they have won 17 Test matches and drawn three. The victory also saw Australia
avenge their 171-run loss to India in the second Test of the BorderGavaskar Trophy of 2001 which ended their 16-match world record winning streak. The men from Down Under had lost nine consecutive Test matches in Asia before this match. Four of those were in India during their last visit in 2013, two against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and three in Sri Lanka. This is also India’s second biggest in a home Test and fourth largest overall. Their biggest loss have also been against Australia, by 342 runs in Nagpur in 2004-05. Coming in to bat in the postlunch session after dismissing Australia for 285, the hosts ran into trouble early in their second essay with Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul and Kohli returning to the pavilion even before the Indian total had reached the 50-run mark. Cheteshwar Pujara — the highest scorer in India’s second innings with 31 — and Ajinkya Rahane added 30 runs between them before the latter mistimed a delivery from O’Keefe only to find Lyon at cover. Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been in excellent batting form in recent times, lasted all of eight deliveries before being trapped leg before by O’Keefe. The umpire had initially adjudged Ashwin as not out, but a review by the visitors prompted a change in the decision.
Sachin Tendulkar joins LinkedIn NEW DELHI: Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar joined professional networking website LinkedIn as a LinkedIn InfluS. Tendulkar encer. He is said to be the first cricketer in the world to join the league of over 500 global influencers on the professional network, a statement said. His first post on LinkedIn talks about how he made the transition in business after cricket. Tendulkar wants to use the medium to reach a wider audience and help them get better in their field. Tendulkar said: “I am continuing the process of learning and have enjoyed gaining insightful experiences off the field in recent times. These experiences have distinctly been different from the ones during my days in international cricket. Being a part of a team and learning from each other has been an integral part of my development.” The batting maestro feels there are multiple situations in organizations that he is involved with where his on-field learnings benefit those organisations. “My aim is to share these experiences on a platform, like LinkedIn, to reach a large number of professionals and entrepreneurs to give them get a different perspective and help better their everyday performance,” he added. —IANS

ashion designers Tarun Tahiliani and Amit Aggarwal are collaborating for the grand finale of the upcoming Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2017. The designers will be presenting their interpretation of the ‘Fresh New Look’ campaign by the Amazon Fashion at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. “The concept for this season’s grand finale is an exciting platform for us to put forth a language of fashion that is synonymous to the woman of today. It’s a beautiful collaboration with the people we

have already been working with for so long, but this shall act as a new space for creative engagement that exceeds possibilities in fashion and its business,” Aggarwal told IANS.
“Fresh New Look encapsulates the young generation’s Rule Every Moment philosophy.” “For me, it’s a moment of great joy to be a part of this joint effort with Amazon, FDCI and Tarun and I look forward to mark this event as a landmark for fashion in India,” he added.

The four-day event will be held from March 15. Talking about the theme, Arun Sirdeshmukh, Head at Amazon Fashion, said the ‘Fresh New Look’ campaign encapsulates the young generation’s ‘Rule Every Moment’ philosophy “that sees fashion as not just an extension of their personality but accentuates who they are”. “We are delighted to have two of our biggest Indian designers to creatively articulate our campaign thought on AIFW ramp at the country’s biggest fashion confluence,” Sirdeshmukh added. The gala is organized by Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), the country’s apex body in fashion.

‘Few celebrities have their own style’ IANS, NEW DELHI
T NEW DELHI: Before you hit the stores to stock up on summer essentials, keep an eye on factors like seaside stripes and oversized bags which might trend big, says an expert. Abhinaya, Myntra Fashion Stylist, lists some trends: v Seaside stripes: Just when we thought there’s nothing more to stripes, seaside stripes make their way. Ripped straight from beach umbrellas and lounge chairs, these in-your-face lines are the perfect summer staples you always wanted to own. v Oversized bags: Bags get bigger — really bigger to an exaggerated degree. Don’t be surprised if you spot them on the streets and airports very soon, for they can hold anything and everything you need. v Shades of yellow: Looking forward to wearing a happy color this summer? Then go all out with yellow — whether it’s stripes, solids or ruffles. And no matter what your skin tone is, there is a shade for all.

he work of fashion designers and stylists impacts the fashion scene reflected in Bollywood, and not the other way around, says designer Narendra Kumar, who finds very few celebrities having a style of their own. “I think it is the stylists and the designers who have changed Bollywood a lot more, than what Bollywood has changed for fashion. What they (celebrities) do is, they amplify fashion for stylists... There are very few people who have their own style. “Most of it comes from stylists and people who are really doing the work to create the look, and pushing that,” Kumar told IANS IANS, NEW DELHI

uring summers, most people experience sudden acne breakouts on their face, upper back and chin due to excessive sun exposure. Binge on fiber rich food and maintain a proper cleansing routine to keep acne away, says an expert. Megha Shah, Cosmetologist at Beauty and Curves Clinic, Surat, has rolled out tips that can be incorporated in daily life routine to eliminate or avoid acne in the hot season: l Say no to acnegenic foods: No matter how often you crave for those ice creams, chocolates, cakes, and pizzas if you want to take control over your acne say no to sugars and

when asked if Bollywood has helped in changing the game for menswear fashion in India. The designer showcased his lat-
est range “The Millenials” presented by Burgoyne, an Irish Linen manufacturer, last month at the Lakme Fashion Week
Beat summer acne with these tips refined flour. Certain sea-food and fatty food can also flare up acne. l Avoid food causing constipation: A fiber-rich diet, including citrus fruits, melons, sprouts work wonders for your gut. A properly functioning excretory system prevents constipation and results in a clean, clear face. l Cleansing routine: During summers, a lot of dirt and oil gets accumulated on the face, do not
forget to wash your face at least twice a day. Use a good exfoliant once a week to shed off dead skin and clean your pores gently. l Change moisturizer: Moisturizing skin in summer is as important as it is in winter. So, choosing the right lotion is important. Go for gelbased lotions that do not make skin greasy.
Summer/Resort 2017. Talking about his collection, Kumar said: “The collection is inspired by the generation of millenials and how last time such a major change happened was probably in 1970s... When people thought about life differently. It is about post 1970s’, the hippies and all of that.” The color palette for the range varied from neutral shades like salmon, beige and moved on to more color-blocked section and finally ended up with decorative embroidered evening wear in darker hues for men. The designer further says that he has seen a distinct shift in the way men choose their fashion now.
