n a city that never sleeps, the Metlife Stadium came alive with the IIFA Awards celebration on July 15 night, with Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt becoming proud winners of the Best Actor trophies for their remarkable work in Udta Punjab. Given that it came for a film which was mired in controversy with the censor board over its theme and content, made the success sweeter for the stars — even Diljit Dosanjh walked away with the Best Debutante - Male Actor for his performance in the film. All three of them were emotional about winning the award for a film which let mainstream performers take up something risky. The Best Picture honor went to Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja, based on the real life story of Neerja Bhanot, an air hostess who lost her life while trying to save others on a hijacked flight at Karachi. Trump, Putin had undisclosed hour-long discussion at G20

The second meeting between the two leaders, undisclosed at the time, took place at the dinner

uled, two-hour-long bilateral meeting earlier that day. Trump responded to reports of the meeting on Twitter. “Fake News story of secret dinner with Putin is sick”. “All G20 leaders, and spouses, were invited by the Chancellor of Germany. Press knew!” Trump

tweeted, following it up with another, saying: “The Fake News is becoming more and more dishonest! Even a dinner arranged for top 20 leaders in Germany is made to look sinister!” News of the discussion, however, was not that Trump had attended the dinner, but that he had an undisclosed and one-onone discussion with Putin during the dinner, reported CNN. Putin’s official interpreter provided the only Russian-English interpretation, the White House statement said, because the President was seated next to the wife of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “Each couple was allowed one translator,” it said. John Kirby, who was a spokesman for the State Department during the Barack Obama administration, said the lack of a US translator or other support meant the US would be without a scrupulous translation or a record of what was discussed.

declined to rule definitively on the Trump administration’s appeal of Watson’s ruling, insisting that the case would have to follow the usual course through the federal appellate courts.

U

S President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin spoke for a second time on July 7 in a previously undisclosed discussion during the G-20 summit in Germany, the White House has confirmed. A senior White House official told CNN this week that the discussion lasted nearly an hour. The White House in a statement disputed characterizing the discussion as a “second meeting”, and instead called it a “brief conversation”. It said Trump spoke with Putin through a Russian translator. National Security Council spokesman Michael Anton said no other staff were present for the discussion. The second discussion between the two leaders, undisclosed at the time, took place at a dinner for G20 leaders, a senior administration

Repeal Obamacare: Trump to Republicans WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump urged Republicans to “just repeal” the Obamacare and start over with a new plan, following opposition from conservative senators, who seemed unable to agree on an alternative proposal. “Republicans should just REPEAL failing ObamaCare now and work on a new Healthcare Plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems (Democrats) will join in!,” Trump tweeted this week. The new health care bill proposed by the Trump government was left earlier this week with no apparent possible progress in the Senate after two other Republican lawmakers announced their opposition to the proposal, leaving the party a minority in the Upper House, reports Efe news agency. The senators who opposed the proposal this week were Mike Lee and Jerry Moran, joining Susan Collins and Rand Paul as the four Republicans who have turned their backs on the proposal that the Trump government was trying to push to replace Obamacare. In addition to the four opposing Republicans, several other senators such as Ron Johnson also expressed doubts about the new proposal. —IANS

official told the Washington Post. At some point during the meal, Trump left his own seat to occupy a chair next to Putin, said the report. “All the leaders circulated around the room throughout the dinner and President Trump spoke with many leaders,” the White House statement said. “As the din-

ner was concluding,” it said, Trump spoke “briefly” with Putin, who was seated next to First Lady Melania Trump. “The insinuation that the White House had tried to ‘hide’ a second meeting is false, malicious and absurd,” the statement said. The discussion came after their sched-

Travel ban: US apex court gives Trump partial victory IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US Supreme Court ruled this week that while President Donald Trump’s administration can continue to bar refugees from entering the country, officials will have to show greater flexibility in enforcing the accompanying ban on travellers from six Muslim-majority countries. The Justice Department had asked the high court to stay an

order issued last week by a federal district judge in Hawaii who found the administration’s definition of close family in allowing exemptions to the travel ban was too narrow, Efe reported. US District Judge Derrick Watson also said that the government could not prohibit entry by refugees assured of placement in the US by recognized refugee agencies. Trump Jr. to testify over Russian election meddling IANS, WASHINGTON

D

onald Trump Jr., the US President’s eldest son, is slated to testify before a Senate judiciary committee on July 26 over alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, the media reported. Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul J. Manafort will also testify alongside Trump Jr. whereas the President’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner will appear earlier on July 24, the committee panel has announced. However, a source told CNN that

Donald Trump Jr

Kushner’s testimony would be behind closed doors. “As Mr. Kushner has been saying since March, he has been and is prepared to voluntarily cooperate and provide whatever information he has on the investigations to Congress,” his lawyer Abbe Lowell said late on July 19 in response to the panel’s announcement. “Working with and being responsive to the schedules of the committees, we have arranged Mr. Kushner’s interview with the Senate for July 24. He will continue to cooperate and appreciates the opportunity to

assist in putting this matter to rest.” Earlier this week, Senator Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate judiciary committee, said that Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller had signed off on the committee’s request to interview Manafort and Trump Jr. in public, CNN reported. The committee wants to hear from Trump Jr. about a June 2016 meeting he had with a Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya purported to have damaging information about his father’s Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

KANPUR: Paraunkh, the ancestral village of National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind, burst into celebrations as soon as he was declared elected by Returning Officer and Lok Sabha Secretary General Anoop Mishra. Paraunkh residents, irrespective of their age, were seen greeting one another, distributing sweets and celebrating with ‘gulal’, while the children danced their excitement out. The entire village was glued to their television and radio sets since morning anticipating the “good news”, and celebrations started once the first round of vote count was announced, which showed him leading ahead of Meira Kumar. n a toughening of its stand, India asked China to withdraw its troops from Doklam on the Bhutan-China border if it wanted New Delhi to pull out its Army from the area. In the first exhaustive Indian comment on the border row between India and China that began over a month ago, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj accused China of unilaterally trying to change the status quo on the frontier with Bhutan. This is what had sparked off the stand-off between the Indian and Chinese armies, she told the Rajya Sabha. She said while China was saying that India should withdraw its troops from Doklam for negotiations to begin, “we are saying that if a dialogue is to be held, then both should withdraw (their troops)”. The Chinese action “is a challenge to our security”, the Minister said, adding India was not doing

anything unreasonable. The stand-off started more than a month ago when Indian troops stopped Chinese soldiers from building a road on the tri-junction of India, Bhutan and China. This has severely affected SinoIndian ties, with Chinese experts threatening a war if New Delhi did not buckle. Sushma Swaraj accused China of violating the terms of a written

agreement reached between India, China and Bhutan in 2012. “Over the years, China has been trying to get closer and closer to where the tri-junction point ends. It has done things like repair roads, re-tar them and things like that.” She described what was different about the June 16 incident that led to the stand-off. “This time though, they came with bulldozers and construction

equipment with the aim of breaching the point where the tri-junction ends. That is a threat to our security,” she said. This time, China wanted to “unilaterally change the status quo” at the Sikkim-Tibet-Bhutan trijunction, she said. “As long as it was between China and Bhutan about their border dispute, we had no problem. But when it comes to tri-junction, our interests came into the picture. “They want to come down to Batang La. If China unilaterally changes the status quo at the trijunction, it will pose a direct threat to our security. “Foreign countries are with us. They feel that China is being aggressive with a small country like Bhutan. Bhutan has protested, including in writing. All the countries feel India’s stand is right and the law is with us,” the Minister said. On China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) project, Sushma Swaraj said India had opposed it right from the beginning.

Naidu: From RSS to BJP’s Vice Presidential face Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu rose from the ranks to become the party President and a Union Minister IANS, NEW DELHI

M

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu. (Photo:IANS)

uppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu entered the RSS by accident — his links began in childhood when he chanced upon a ‘shakha’ while playing. Within some decades, he was the BJP’s best known leader from southern India, one famous for witty one-liners. A key member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, the now 68-year-old cut his political teeth during the “Emergency” of 1975-77 when he went underground against the government of Indira Gandhi and eventually got jailed. He remained underground until his arrest, distributing anti-government literature in educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, travelling on a scooter along with a woman activist on pillion in a bid not to arouse suspicion. He was accused of disturbing a meeting of Sanjay Gandhi and handcuffed during transit from one jail to the other. Naidu hit the national scene when he was one of the prominent

opposition spokespersons along with S. Jaipal Reddy, who was then in Janata Party, during the campaign by N.T. Rama Rao after his dismissal as the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister by Indira Gandhi in the 1980s. Even though the Bharatiya Janata Party was on a weak wicket in southern India,

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu hit the national scene when he was one of the prominent opposition spokespersons along with S. Jaipal Reddy, who was then in Janata Party Naidu embraced it tightly. A quick-witted and effective communicator steeped in RSS/BJP ideology, Naidu rose from the ranks to become the party President and a Union Minister. If all goes well, he will be India’s next Vice President. Naidu has been a trouble-shoot-

er for the government as also one of its best communicators with his alliterative and catchy one-liners. He has friends across political parties. It will help him as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha where the BJP still does not have a majority. Naidu is quick to respond to criticism from the opposition. He has handled key organizational assignments in the BJP and became its President in 2002. Naidu had three continuous terms in the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka from 1998 to 2016, when he shifted to Rajasthan to get a fourth term. He was Rural Development Minister during the first NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his inspiration along with senior party leader L.K. Advani. With Modi scripting BJP’s success in 2014, Naidu described him as the most popular Indian leader, the most credible political personality and among the top 10 leaders of the world. He is credited with coining the acronym MODI Making Of Developed India, a BJP favorite.

Is Nitish Kumar on a losing wicket? If Nitish responds to the BJP overtures to join the saffron brigade either formally or informally with the BJP propping up his government with outside support, he will be accused of crass opportunism AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

N

itish Kumar is in a bind. He knows that the mahagathbandhan or grand alliance in Bihar is fraying at the edges, but he doesn’t know which way to turn. If he responds to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) overtures to join the saffron brigade either formally or informally with the BJP propping up his government with outside support, he will be accused of crass opportunism. He also knows that in the BJP’s company, he will have to play second fiddle to the Narendra ModiAmit Shah duo and forget about a major role in national affairs. For all practical purposes, he will have to remain confined to Bihar for the rest of his career. However, if he remains with Lalu Prasad Yadav and Co, he will

Nitish has to take a stand against Lalu and family who are under probe.

be staring at a probable defeat in the next election and the loss of his reputation as a good governance man. His predicament is due to a miscalculation of Modi’s

appeal for the average voter. When Nitish Kumar realized it after his party’s poor performance in 2014, he quit the Chief Minister’s post. Since then, he has managed to

claw his way back into power, but he has never been happy with his companions on that uphill trek, especially after Laloo Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) pipped him at the post by becoming the first party in the Bihar alliance. Much of Nitish Kumar’s problems stem from his relatively weak political position vis-a-vis the RJD, the party of the dominant Yadavs, whereas Nitish Kumar’s own base of support comprises the Kurmis, who make up six per cent of Bihar’s population. Yadavs, on the other hand, constitute 11 per cent, the largest group among the backward castes. Because of Nitish Kumar’s vulnerability on the caste front, he has tried to shore up his position by wooing the rural and lower middle class women via his prohibition policy. But that has not been enough to make him feel

secure. However, the blow to his position is not the result of his unstable base. It is the fallout of the revival of Lalu Prasad’s familiar image of being less than honest in his transactions in public life. To make matters worse, his son, Tejashwi, who is the Deputy Chief Minister (and is seen by his mother, Rabri Devi, as a future Chief Minister), has been charged with sleaze by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Lalu Prasad has predictably accused the CBI of targeting him at the BJP’s behest. But Nitish Kumar has refrained from standing by his cabinet colleague and alliance partner, wanting him to prove his innocence. Nitish Kumar’s stand might have been applauded on the grounds of rectitude if he had demonstrated that he remained firmly in the anti-BJP camp.

stronger partnership in dealing with counter-terrorism will give an impetus to India-US relations, US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has said. “The number of military-tomilitary engagement and exercises between US and India exceeds any other partner in the region and it is only continuing to grow,” the Hawaiian Democrat said at a FicciIIFA Global Business Forum on July 14. Gabbard, the first Hindu elected to the Congress, was in conversation with the Indian envoy to the US, Navtej Sarna, at the event. They discussed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US last month to meet President Donald Trump and how opportunities must be explored to further strengthen ties between the two countries. Stressing the need to boost counter-terrorism, Gabbard said:

New guidelines for NRI welfare fund NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved revision of the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) guidelines, to expand scope of welfare measures that can be extended through the fund to overseas Indian nationals in times of distress and emergency. The ICWF, set up in 2009, is aimed at assisting overseas Indian nationals in times of distress and emergency in the most deserving cases on a means tested basis. “The revised guidelines being made broad-based seek to expand the scope of welfare measures that can be extended through the fund. The guidelines would cover three key areas namely Assisting Overseas Indian nationals in distress situations, community welfare activities and improvement in consular services,” said an official statement. “They are expected to provide Indian Missions and Posts abroad greater flexibility in swiftly addressing to requests for assistance by overseas Indian nationals. —IANS

ndian Americans, spanning various communities, held protests in three US cities to express their outrage over lynching of minorities by mobs in India and the Narendra Modi government’s policies which are “emboldening such forces”. The protests here as well as San Diego and San Jose last weekend were organized by The Alliance for Justice and Accountability (AJA), an umbrella coalition of progressive organizations across the US, and other groups. A fourth protest was scheduled to be held in New York City on July 23. These protests are similar to the “Not In My Name” protests that have been held across various cities in India. Besides the AJA, the protests in San Jose were jointly organized with the “Multifaith Voices for Peace and Justice”, while the South Asia Solidarity Initiative (SASI), will be part of the protests in New York City. Protesters in San Jose carried signs, such as “India - Hostage to Hindutva?” and “Beef Ban is Cultural Fascism”. The AJA has pledged to work with people of all faiths to defend India from the onslaught of hate and divisiveness.

TN farmers beat themselves to protest MLAs’ salary hike Three months ago, these farmers held protests while donning garlands of human skulls which they claimed were of dead farmers IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n another novel protest, Tamil Nadu farmers rallying here to demand loan waiver and drought relief package this week beat themselves with flipflops to protest the almost two-fold salary hikes state legislators have given themselves. About 80 farmers shouted slogans against the state lawmakers, calling the salary move “shameless” and describing their own condition as “worse than beggars”. “Farmers do not have food to eat or money to survive due to prolonged drought in our state. Instead of taking steps to provide them relief, our MLAs chose to increase their own salaries. We have been left speechless by their shameless action. We condemn it in very strong words,” farmer leader P. Ayyakannu told IANS.

The President of the NationalSouth Indian Rivers Linking Farmers Association said the farmers were agitated by the “shameless” decision of the Tamil Nadu legislators to hike their own salaries.

The legislators this week approved a hike in their salaries from Rs 55,000 to Rs 1.05 lakh per month, apart from an increase in MLA Development Fund from Rs 2 crore to Rs 2.5 crore.

Nearly 100 farmers from the agrarian crisis-hit state, who had suspended their 41-day long protest following government assurance in April, turned up again at the Jantar Mantar on July 16 to press for their demands. They want Rs 40,000-crore drought relief package, complete loan waiver, compensation for agriculture produce, crop insurance to individual farmers, and linking of rivers to address water crisis in Tamil Nadu. Three months ago, these farmers had grabbed nationwide attention by holding protests while donning garlands of human skulls which they claimed were of dead farmers, holding mock funerals, shaving their heads, holding snakes and mice in their mouths, stripping outside the Prime Minister’s Office and threatening to drink their own urine.

between the two and IndiGo has decided to lift the said ban with immediate effect and Reddy is withdrawing the case he has filed.” The airline added that it has informed the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) about its decision. In a similar incident in March, Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad was accused of assaulting an Air India staff, following which several airlines banned him from flying on their planes till he apologized. Gaikwad later submitted a letter to the Aviation Minister to express ‘regret’, after which AI revoked the ban, followed by the Federation of Indian Airlines and other private airlines also lifting the ban.

Drug racket: Jagannadh grilled for 10 hours

The official said they got some clues during the questioning of director Puri Jagannadh and based on these clues, further probe would be carried out IANS, HYDERABAD

T

he Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the drug racket in Hyderabad on July 19 questioned well-known Telugu film director Puri Jagannadh for nearly 10 hours and collected his blood sample. The sample was collected from the actor following his consent, SIT official Srinivas Rao told reporters. The official said they got some clues during the questioning and based on these clues further investigations would be carried out. After day-long suspense, the director came out of Abkari Bhavan, the office of Prohibition & Excise Department at around 9.30 p.m. and returned home with his

family members without talking to waiting media persons. Jagannadh was the first among the 12 Tollywood personalities summoned by the SIT for ques-

tioning in connection with the sensational racket. A four-member team of SIT officials questioned the director on whether he is addicted to drugs or

has any links with the drug peddlers arrested in the case. “Investigation is going on at good pace,” said a brief statement from the SIT on July 19 night. Enforcement Director Akun Sabharwal, who is heading the probe, said Jagannadh cooperated during the questioning. SIT officials learnt to have questioned him about his links with Calvin Mascarenhas, the kingpin of the racket. When he denied any links, the officials confronted him with the evidence including photographs of the release function of his movie Jyothi Lakshmi in which he was seen with Calvin. Jagannadh told officials that he knew Calvin only as an event manager but denied any financial dealings with him.

Enough evidence to nail Dileep: Police IANS, KOCHI

K

erala Police on July 19 voiced confidence it has enough evidence to nail superstar Dileep in the alleged abduction and molestation of a popular actress in February this year. A.V. George, Superintendent of Police and one of the key officials behind the probe, refused to give out much about the probe, but said they would not have arrested the actor without evidence.

He appeared confident that he has all the evidence against Dileep. However, the actor’s manager Appunny, who is currently on the run, in his anticipatory bail plea filed on July 19 said that police has no evidence against Dileep. He alleged that police is trying to put pressure on actor-turned-director Nadir Shah and himself to turn approver in the case. Dileep is presently housed at the Angamaly sub-jail near his home town Aluva as a remand prisoner.

On July 20, a single bench of the Kerala High Court is to take up his bail application. Last week, the trial court denied bail to the actor. In a related development, rev-

enue officials have found that the theatre complex owned by Dileep near here has been built on encroached land. They have started to initiate legal proceedings against the actor.

BRIEFS: Ratnam yet to finalize cast for next film CHENNAI: Amid rumors that actor R. Madhavan might reunite with Mani Ratnam for the fourth time, a source close to the filmmaker says he hasnt finalized the cast Mani Ratnam for his next yet-untitled Tamil project. “Mani sir is in talks with a few actors and this includes Madhavan. But he hasn’t signed anyone yet and the process will take a few more weeks,” the source told IANS. Ratnam and Madhavan had previously worked in Tamil films Alaipayuthey, Kannathil Muthamittal and Aayutha Ezhuthu. The source confirmed Ratnam is not making a romantic film.

‘Understood basics of commercial cinema’ CHENNAI: Actress Avantika Mishra says she learnt the basics of commercial cinema - which includes how to present herself on screen in Avantika Mishra order to appeal to the masses - via forthcoming Telugu romantic drama Vaishakam. Even though Avantika made her acting debut with the 2014 Telugu thriller Maya, she considers Vaishakam a debut of sorts. “I have signed a Telugu film after a gap. I feel like I’m finally getting the perfect launch. This project helped me understand the basics of commercial cinema,” Avantika, who plays a businesswoman called Bhanumati in the film, told IANS. The film Vaishakam is directed by B. Jaya. It is slated for release on July 21. Avantika points out how a director treats his actors also depend on the rapport they share. —IANS

Rahman trolled for singing Haasan tells fans to nail TN ministers ‘Tamil songs’ in London IANS, CHENNAI

LONDON: Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, who hails from Tamil Nadu, got slammed on social media for performing Tamil songs at the Wembley Stadium. While some were left disappointed, others stood by his songs selection as they believe music has no language barrier. Rahman’s ‘Netru, Indru, Naalai’ (Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow) gig at the London event on July 8 didn’t hit the right chord with all his fans, especially his Bollywood-song admirers.

According to reports, some left the concert after Rahman started singing A.R. Rahman Tamil songs. “A.R. Rahman concert: Never seen so much disappointment and mass walkouts. Approximately one per cent of songs in Hindi,” one fan posted on Twitter. —IANS

M

ultifaceted actor and film producer Kamal Haasan took his fight against the Tamil Nadu government to a higher level, urging jis fans and others to send email complaints against corruption to the ministers. In a tweet, Kamal requested his fans and discerning people of Tamil Nadu to send complaints against corruption to the ministers concerned in a digital format, noting complaints on paper would be torn and thrown away. The actor had requested the people explain

the travails faced by them due to corruption and also ask questions in a respectable manner. The rulers should know that the people are more honorable, he said.

Kamal said there will be few lakh questions and whether the ministers would arrest the questioners or would they provide an answer to those questions remains to be seen. The actor said he would cite the corrupt practices relating to his movie field. He alleged that barring few like him, others in the movie world are keeping silent to the corrupt drama enacted in the name of giving tax exemption certificates. The well-accomplished actor, at times outspoken, is facing the ire of several ministers in Tamil Nadu for his recent comment that there is corruption in all the state government departments.

eteran actor and former censor board chief Anupam Kher, who plays a pivotal role in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Indu Sarkar — mired in controversy over its political flavor, has described the current scenario of the CBFC as “ridiculous”. “What is happening in the censor board, it’s not only unfortunate, it’s ridiculous,” Anupam Kher told IANS here on the sidelines of the recently concluded International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards. “We are in the 21st century. I think people are responsible enough to not do some things which they don’t think they need to do.” “Yes, we have to have a sense of

HYDERABAD: National Awardwinning actress Kangana Ranaut got a deep cut between her eyebrows while shooting for a sword fighting scene on the set of her upcoming film Manikarnika - The Queen of Jhansi. Kangana was shooting here on Wednesday with co-star Nihar Pandya. The Queen star was rushed to the Apollo Hospital amidst pain and blood loss. She got 15 stitches on the forehead and has been advised rest for four days. “I am a bit embarrassed to be thrilled to have a battle scar on my face. Also, people from my team have been telling me that it’s like that ‘Peshwa teeka’ that ‘Manikarnika’ wore,” Kangana said in a statement. “It’s a bit dramatic, but I am excited that my face was covered in blood and I got a genuine and authentic glimpse of the Queen’s life,” she added. ollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has shared a cryptic message about the discrimination he has faced in the Hindi film industry over appearance. Taking to Twitter, Nawazuddin, whose performance has been lauded by critics and audience alike, wrote: "Thank you for making me realize that I cannot be paired along with the fair and handsome because I am dark and not good looking." The Manjhi: The Mountain Man actor added: "But I never focus on that."

However, the 43-year-old actor's message is unclear as to who he was referring to.

On the acting front, Nawazuddin is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Munna Michael. The film directed by Sabbir Khan is set to release on July 21. Munna Michael also stars Tiger Shroff and debutante Nidhhi Agerwal. It is based on the story of Munna, a street boy from Teen Batti slum locality here. He loves dancing and grows up idolizing King of Pop Michael Jackson. Nawazuddin was last seen in the Sridevi starrer Mom and will also be feature in Babumoshai Bandookbaaz, which is slated to release on August 25.

‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’: Lifelike and Irrepressible

T

he much-awaited Lipstick Under My Burkha is a bold and brutally honest film about the unbridled dreams of four women, trapped in their lives owing to societal norms and stereotypes. Set in a middle-class mohalla (locality) in Bhopal, the film centres around the lives of the four protagonists - Usha Parmar aka Buaji, (Ratna Pathak Shah), an elderly widow, who supresses her deep-seated physical desires, Shireen Aslam (Konkona Sen Sharma), a sales girl who does a job without her hus-

Although the four protagonists are not related to each other in the film, the dexterous manner in which their lives are interwoven is laudable and speaks volumes for the cleverly crafted screenplay. The actors portray their characters with panache and sincerity, each one becoming the character they are essaying. Ratna Pathak Shah although distinct in her typical style, essays the sexually repressed Buaji’ with the requisite restraint and candor befitting her calibre as an actor. Konkona Sen Sharma as Shireen, is brilliant as always but does not offer anything that one has not seen her do before.

IIFA’17: Big win for Shahid, Alia; best film award goes to ‘Neerja’ Both the actors received awards for ‘Udta Punjab’ while Diljeet took away the award for Best Debutante at IIFA 2017 in New York

RADHIKA BHIRANI, NEW YORK

I

n a city that never sleeps, the Metlife Stadium came alive with the IIFA Awards celebration on July 15 night, with Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt becoming proud winners of the Best Actor trophies for their remarkable work in Udta Punjab. Actor Jim Sarbh won the Best Performance in a Negative role for his act in the movie. Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury walked away with the Best Direc-

tion award for Pink, a hard-hitting drama which put forth the message that when a woman says no, it is a no. Actress Taapsee Pannu, who played a pivotal role in Pink, was named the Woman Of The Year, while music maestro A.R. Rahman was given a Special Award in recognition of his contribution to film music since 25 years at the event, which was largely attended by the NRI community. Rahman sang two lines from ‘Maa tujhe salaam’ much to the

delight of the audience on the final day of the 18th edition of International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend and Awards, an annual celebration of Hindi cinema at a foreign location. In the Best Supporting Actor category, Shabana Azmi and Anupam Kher were honored for Neerja and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story; Varun Dhawan was lauded for his comic timing in Dishoom; and Disha Patani was encouraged with an award for her debut movie M.S.

Dhoni: The Untold Story. The music category saw Pritam winning the Best Music Direction for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Amitabh Bhattacharya bagging the Best Lyrics accolade for ‘Channa mereya’. Among the singers, Kanika Kapoor’s ‘Da da dase’ and Tulsi Kumar ‘Soch na sake’ shared the award in the female category, while Amit Mishra won it in the men’s category. As hosts, Karan Johar and Saif

Ali Khan attempted to keep the humor alive, but beyond a point, the crowd wasn’t very engaged and booed them in between. The performances by Alia, Katrina Kaif, Shahid, Varun, Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon and Salman kept the pace of the event going. Raabta actors Sushant and Kriti performed on retro tracks, while Varun paid a tribute to his father David Dhawan by grooving to his chartbusters. IIFA, a celebration of Hindi film and music, takes place every year in a new country. The idea is to spread the magic and promote ‘Indian cinema’.

Karan and Saif, who were hosting the gala, revisited the muchtalked about issue which started in Bollywood when Queen star Kangana Ranaut branded Karan as a

When Manish Malhotra tripped NEW YORK: Veteran fashion designer Manish Malhotra tripped as he made his way to collect an award at the IIFA Rocks stage but he was all smiles. The debonair designer went up the stage to receive the Best Background Score on behalf of Pritam for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. But just as he was about to get on to the last stair to the stage, he tripped. Later, Manish took the stage to

receive his own Best Costume Designing award for the same film, and he ensured he was careful. “When I came to collect an award for Pritam, I fell badly. I think I am lucky when it comes to collecting an award for myself,” Manish quipped.

Alia Bhatt entertains with rap NEW YORK: She has already given her fans a sense of her singing ability with ‘Sooha saaha’ and ‘Main tenu samjhawan’. But Alia Bhatt proved she can even rap well. At the IIFA Rocks stage, the talented actress came to the stage to present

an award. And then the hosts Riteish Deshmukh and Maniesh Paul insisted she shows the audience a step or two. But Alia said she would do that during her performance at the main IIFA Awards event. had made it big in the industry because of his father, director David Dhawan. “You are here because of your pappa,” Saif quipped. Varun said: “And you’re here because of your mummy (veteran

actress Sharmila Tagore).” Karan then promptly added: “I am here because of my pappa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).” They then said in unison: “Nepotism rocks”. Varun then didn’t leave a chance to take a potshot at Karan saying: “There was a song in your film... ‘Bole choodiyan, bole kangana’.” Karan, with his quick wit, then commented: “Kangana naa hi bole toh achha hai... Kangana bahut bolti hai. (It’s better Kangana doesn’t say anything, she talks a lot.” At the IIFA Awards night, actors Taapsee Pannu and The Black Prince actor Satinder Sartaaj didn’t miss a chance to ask Karan if they could get a role in his films or feature on “Koffee With Karan” respectively. “It is my dream to be on ‘Koffee With Karan”, sir. Ek baar zarur bulaana (Call me at least),” Sartaaj said.

I regret it, says Karan Johar MUMBAI: After actor Varun Dhawan, filmmaker Karan Johar apologized for his “nepotism rocks” act at the IIFA Awards in New Jersey that created a stir on social media. After Karan along with actors Varun and Saif Ali Khan, took a jibe at actress Kangana Ranaut by bringing up the nepotism debate at the awards gala, they received flak on social media with Twitteraties calling their act “disappointing”. While Varun apologized for the act on Twitter, Karan said that he also feels that it’s talent that rocks and not nepotism. “Of course, I don’t believe that ‘nepotism rocks’. Of course, I believe that only talent rocks. If anything that rocks, it’s your talent, hard work and conviction. It’s the energy you bring to your job,” Karan said in an interview with NDTV news channel. “What we said was meant to be a joke, which I think has been misplaced, misunderstood and I think it went wrong. I regret it,” he added. —IANS

“When you work with children you work for God and helping the less privileged is the best sadhna (meditation) ever.” This is the philosophy with which Viren Babubhai Joshi has led his life. Joshi is one of the founder members of a charitable organization called Manav Sadhna that is based in Gandhi Ashram Gujarat and also has a chapter in Chicago. Today the NGO, works for the upliftment of more than 10,000 children from the slums and poor backgrounds in Ahmedabad and has been actively involved in several rehabilitation projects across the world.

SELFLESS SERVICE security in Chicago. However Joshi admits that struggles awaited him in Chicago. Early 80’s were a tough time and unemployment was huge. It wasn’t as easy to find a job. But Viren persisted and took up whatever work he got. From working in TJ Maxx to doing night shifts, he worked diligently to make his life comfortable in the new country he called home now. During this time he also enrolled himself for higher education. By now he had found himself a job in a firm that manufactured aluminum parts for automobiles. He worked hard and rose to the position of quality control manager and then plant manager. Joshi says, “When I was comfortable enough in Chicago to support my family I called them here.”

T

he organization works at the grassroots level in Ahmedabad and helps in providing basic health, hygiene, education and creative development opportunities to children coming from less privileged backgrounds. Manav Sadhna also organizes societal support and food donation drives for the elderly in the community. The charitable institution also holds health camps and has volunteered during natural calamities such as the Kutch earthquake, Tsunami and Nepal earthquake. Viren Joshi, a Chicago resident has been involved in all these noble efforts and has dedicated his life to it. Joshi’s story is an inspiring tale of coming to America building a life from a scratch, riding the corporate ladder in Chicago and then listening to the heart and returning to roots to serve the poor. Joshi spent most part of his life shuttling between Chicago and Ahmedabad to balance his professional and philanthropic activities. He is currently based in Ahmedabad India and travels to Chicago less frequently owing to his mother’s old age. His social work in Ahmedabad is in full swing and he owes the success of the Chicago chapter of his trust to the integrity of Indians in Chicago who believe in giving back to the community that nurtured them. Joshi in conversation with Hi India traces his journey from Ahmedabad to Chicago and then back to his people in Gandhi Ashram at Ahmedabad. He stresses how both Ahmedabad and Chicago shaped his life and will always be home to him.

STARTING LIFE IN CHICAGO Viren Joshi was born and brought up in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. His father Babubhai Joshi was a freedom fighter and he was brought up on principles of giving back to the society. When his father retired in early 80’s the financial responsibility of the family fell on him and his brother’s shoulders. In 1982 when he was 25, he along with his brother traveled from India to far away land of America to look for a promising future. Since he had relatives here he emigrated hoping to make a life of financial

FOLLOWING THE HEART According to Joshi he always had this quest to work for those not as blessed by fate. He says, “Coming from Ahmedabad I have always been a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings. I wanted in my own little way bring some equilibrium to the society. Despite my promising life in Chicago I yearned to travel to small villages in India and work with the poor. In 1989 I made the hard decision to quit my job and work for poor children. At that time I was making about $56k annually and it didn’t really seem logical to say good bye to a career like that but I knew that I had to take a tough call to find inner peace.” He adds, “I came to India with my mom and used my savings to serve poor children in

VIREN BABUBHAI JOSHI LEFT HIS COMFORTABLE LIFE AND CORPORATE JOB IN CHICAGO TO GO BACK TO HIS ROOTS IN GUJARAT AND WORK FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN the slums of Ahmedabad. I used to spend time with children, carry food for them. I knew I had to find a way to take my service ahead.” LEADING LIGHT “During all these years I remembered a story I read back in New York in a Gujarati newspaper. It was about Padmashri recipient Ishwarbhai Patel who was based in Gujarat and had been doing exceptional work with the downtrodden Harijan community. I began looking for him in the Gandhi Ashram. He was a veteran social worked and a sanitarian. I found him and there was an instant connection. He was like a father figure to me and I am eternally indebted that he allowed me to come and serve with him. With

MANAV SADHNA A CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION STARTED IN CHICAGO AND AHMEDABAD, BY VIREN JOSHI WORKS ON THE PHILOSOPHY OF MAHATMA GANDHI guidance I got involved in Water Awareness program which was a World Bank Project. For this we traveled in the deep interior villages. We used to travel in state transport buses it was hard but satisfying. Ishwarbhai’s son Jayesh Patel and his daughter in law Anar Patel came along with me in the project and together we worked towards this common goal. We came back with a greater resolve to work more and we began serving around the Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad. With Ishwarbhai’s guidance we began working with slum kids who were ridiculed as untouchables owing to the cleaning

work their families did. It broke my heart to hear their stories of disparity. We started with four children and slowly we were working with 35 children. But it was also around this time that my Green Card was expiring and my savings were running out. I came back to Chicago and my family moved by what I was doing decided to support me.” LIFE IN CHICAGO “It was in 1990 that I moved back to Chicago but I wanted to continue my philanthropic activities. I wrote a letter to Ishwarbhai stating that with his blessings I would want to start a non-profit in Chicago aimed at helping countless children back home who are denied a decent life. During those times email wasn’t yet born and writing a letter meant waiting days to have it delivered. I remember I waited a month and half and I got finally got a reply where he gave me his blessings and a go ahead. I clearly remember that night in my flat in Prospect Nights in Chicago when I couldn’t sleep thinking names for the non-profit. So in 1992 our labor of love Manav Sadhna was born in Illinois with the main purpose of supporting the philanthropic activities in India. My brother Anurag Joshi and his wife Neha Joshi joined us in our journey. Initially we did a small fundraising. My brother

and I are both engineers and we have a knack of carpentry so we carved small temples. We used to invite people and gifted them these small temples and I am happy to say that they

donated generously. We were able to raise initial $4-5k by the support of Indian community in Chicago. One thing that struck me about Chicago was the immense love I received here not just from Indians but Americans too. I remember by now I had taken up a job to support myself and when I told my boss that I want to leave my job and dedicate my life to social work he was moved and offered me the flexibility of working six months and spending the rest of the six months in India to work with the poor. Tell me who would give an offer like that? Later when I once took my boss to India and showed him the work we were doing, he offered me more flexibility. If people in Chicago were not full of so much love then I would not have been able to realize my dream today.” THE MISSION “Until 2013-14 I spent my time equally in India and America. But with my ageing mom frequent traveling became a problem also since my Green card restricted my longer stay in India I chose to take the citizenship. For the past few years I am stationed in Ahmedabad with my mom and spend my day serving children and elderly. People often ask me if I am married or I have children. I tell them I have 10,000 children that I take care of everyday! I never

married because I was so involved in my cause that I just focused on it. I am happy that the dream I saw with Manav Sadhna got accomplished. I also got

Agarwal who are trustees of MS India provide their invaluable services to the cause and in Chicago my brother Anurag and his wife Neha Joshi along with Paresh Patel and Ratna Patel

Army Capt. Humayun Khan

like-minded people along who helped me in my cause. Even though Ishwarbhai Patel is no more, as my guru and founding President of MS India his vision still guides us. Jayesh and Anar Patel along with Ashok Patel and Vandana

who are trustees of MS USA have been lending the cause their unstinted support. Today we share the common goal of feeding one more child and helping one more soul and in it we find supreme happiness.”

JOSHI’S STORY IS AN INSPIRING TALE OF COMING TO AMERICA BUILDING A LIFE FROM A SCRATCH, RIDING THE CORPORATE LADDER IN CHICAGO AND THEN LISTENING TO THE HEART AND RETURNING TO ROOTS TO SERVE THE POOR.

ndian cricket captain Virat Kohli feels that he will not be under any added pressure to perform with Ravi Shastri, considered to be his favorite choice for the post of head coach, back in the team replacing Anil Kumble. India enjoyed a successful spell under Kumble but the leg-spin legend’s contract was not renewed amid a supposedly sour relationship with his captain. Now that Kohli and Shastri have come together again, the performances will be further scrutinized. But at the pre-departure press

conference ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka, Kohli this week said that he is not distracted by the off-field drama that surrounded the appointment of the coaching staff which is now Shastri’s “core team”. “I don’t think there is added pressure. What has to happen will happen. Criticism and being criticized is nothing new to us. Whatever is happening off the field doesn’t bother us. I do not take any added pressure. I started as a player and you only focus on the series that you have to play,” he said as the team embarks on a tour featuring three Tests, five One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and a one-

My job is to bring the best out on the field and make this team do well.” On the team’s equation with Shastri, Kohli said: “We have worked together earlier as well so I don’t think much effort will be required to understand each other.” Shastri elaborated upon how he will go about his job. “I carry on from where I left. MUMBAI: Virtually snubbing the CAC selection of Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan as overseas consultants, newly-appointed head coach of the Indian cricket team Ravi Shastri had his way when the BCCI announced the return of Bharat Arun as bowling coach. At a media conference, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary also declared the elevation of Sanjay Bangar as assistant coach and retained R. Sridhar as the fielding coach till the 2019 ICC World Cup. “I was clear in my head about my core team. And what you just heard is my core team,” Shastri told reporters after the announcement by the BCCI in his presence. The media conference took place after Shastri met the newly-formed four-member BCCI committee for the purpose of deciding the coaches,

comprising acting President C.K. Khanna, acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary, Committee of Administrators (CoA) member Diana Edulji and board CEO Rahul Johri. Shastri’s remarks on Tuesday left it unclear on the roles of former India stalwarts Rahul Dravid and Zaheer Khan who were announced as overseas batting and bowling consultants respectively by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and V.V.S. Laxman. For the record, Shastri said he has talked to both the former players. “All depends on their availability. It depends on individuals, the number of days they want to give but their inputs will be invaluable and they are most welcome. I have spoken to both of them personally,” former India all-rounder Shastri said.

with any baggage. The team has done exceedingly well over three years. If they are No.1 today, they (the players) are the people who deserve the credit,” Shastri said. “As a player, when you play the game, you want the mind to be very clear. You don’t want any distraction and that happens with a good support staff. My job is to do

just that. I want the players to only think about their roles.” Shastri again defended the selection of Bharat Arun as bowling coach. “There is a track record -15 years he has been coaching. It’s outstanding right from the junior teams, the ‘A’ teams to the junior World Cup teams. He knows these boys better than I do,” he said.

lesser menstrual cycle over the lifespan as well as earlier menopause may explain why only some women are vulnerable to the risk of depression, researchers say. The finding showed that longer duration of estrogen exposure from the start of menstruation until the onset of menopause was significantly associated with a reduced risk of depression during the transition to menopause and for up to 10 years

post menopause. The longer duration of birth control use was associated with a decreased risk of depression, but the number of pregnancies or incidence of breastfeeding had no association. “Women are more vulnerable to depressive symptoms during and after the menopause transition because of fluctuating hormone changes,” said JoAnn Pinkerton, Executive Director at the North American Menopause Society, a USbased non-profit organization.

“This study additionally found a higher risk for depression in those with earlier menopause, fewer menstrual cycles over lifespan or more frequent hot flashes,” Pinkerton added.

Well, this is how I was greeted in Bir — a tiny, pristine Tibetan refugee village located in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 5,003 feet, my monsoon gateway from mundane urban life.

The best part of monsoon travel remains watching it rain in the hills. It was dawn when I entered the Kangra valley and I could hear

The first glimpse made me fall in love with this refugee settlement; it looked pure and untouched. A breath of fresh air, carrying the smell of wet soil, welcomed me as I stepped into the Tibetan colony. The Buddhist flags were flapping as the cool breeze touched them and chants echoed from a nearby monastery. The village is a paradise for those with a penchant for Tibetan food and can do without fancy restaurants.

Mahant Swami Maharaj attends Guru Purnima celebrations

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The first Guru Purnima since Mahant Swami Maharaj became guru was celebrated with tremendous enthusiasm at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Chicago IL on July 9. Guru Purnima celebrates the role of a spiritual guru in one’s life and provides the opportunity to offer gratitude for the guidance and support given by the guru. The theme of the celebration was Culture and Spirituality, the two attributes Mahant Swami Maharaj has embodied throughout his life. Mahant Swami Maharaj’s dedication to his predecessor Pramukh Swami Maharaj and his selfless service to BAPS as its leader is a prime example of the unfailing commitment between a guru and his disciple. The program included speeches narrating life experiences from senior Swamis who reflected on the guru bhakti between Mahant Swami Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Honoring the wishes of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, Mahant Swami Maharaj relentlessly traveled throughout

C

India and the world for 45 years to inspire and strengthen satsang among countless devotees and continues to do so today. Mahant Swami Maharaj has modeled his life after his guru and selflessly served as the embodiment of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life motto, “In the joy of others lies our own.” In his blessings on Guru Purnima, Mahant Swami Maharaj said, “Encourage all to develop a sound basis for spirituality and ethics as individuals, emphasizing that this is the greatest way a devotee can offer his or her devotion to a spiritual guru.” Senior Swamis recalled how on July 20, 2102, His Holiness Pramukh Swami

Maharaj revealed in Amdavad that His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj would be his spiritual successor upon his own passing and had written a letter in his own handwriting to that effect. On July 10, Yuvaks and Yuvatis from across the region gathered at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Chicago to attend the Yuvak-Yuvati Din held in the presence of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj. The youths had for many months been preparing by studying various passages of Swaminarayan texts focussing on topics to strengthen their spiritual understanding and development from niyam-dharma to bhakti. Participants also engaged in activities to explore their devotion through the five

senses, to reflect on their connection with Bhagwan Swaminarayan and Mahant Swami Maharaj. These activities included listening to discourses from Swamis, practising daily Hindu rituals, and reading spiritual texts. The event, themed “Eva Sant Ne Namu Hu Shish,” was held in the presence of Mahant Swami Maharaj and explored the principles of Mahima, Het, and Marji. Through the Yuvak-Yuvati Din, attendees were able to learn more about the life and personality of Mahant Swami Maharaj. They explored the vir tues of the sant through the reading of the Bhakatachintamani and understood these qualities through examples from the life of Mahant Swami Maharaj. Attendees were also able to interact with Mahant Swami Maharaj through various activities, including question-and-answer sessions to help them develop, foster, and strengthen their identity with the Satpurush. Through these unique interactions, they were able to experience all of the things that they learned about their Guru firsthand. On July 11, Kishore-Kishori Din was held in the presence of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj with the theme “Je Je Hariye Karyu Het” had attendees from across the region. Before the event, attendees comprising high school and college-aged youth, studied this bhajan in preparation to help understand the concepts of het and priti. They also engaged in different projects to present to His Holiness Mahant Swami

Maharaj as a token of their bhakti. Some of these included making a garland, creating a scrapbook as well as memorizing verses from the Yogi Gita, a small collection of prayers and spiritual principles by His Holiness Yogiji Maharaj and highly regarded by Mahant Swami Maharaj. Swamis shared their interactions with their Gurus in which they had garnered love and compassion from His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj and His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj. At the conclusion, each attendee was given the opportunity to engage in the concept of Nishkapat with Mahant Swami Maharaj through letter writing. Each kishore and kishori wrote a personal letter to Mahant Swami Maharaj in which they were able to express all of their feelings and develop a deeper connection with their Guru. In the evening assembly, Mahant Swami Maharaj guided them by saying, “[In life] education and spirituality are needed. Both are necessary for success.”

MAHANT SWAMI’S DEDICATION TO PRAMUKH SWAMI MAHARAJ IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF THE UNFAILING COMMITMENT BETWEEN A GURU AND HIS DISCIPLE.

Mubashra Uddin

HICAGO, IL -- A Chicago Pakistani American woman accused of throwing her infant daughter to death from an eighthfloor window has been sentenced to probation. Mubashra Uddin, 30, on July 6 pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and a Cook County judge sentenced her to four years of probation. She originally was charged with firstdegree murder in the November 2015 death. Prosecutors said Uddin hid her pregnancy and killed the baby because she feared her Muslim parents from Pakistan wouldn’t approve. Prosecutors said Uddin gave birth and dropped the baby girl out of a bedroom window when she heard her mother approaching. A man found the newborn in the grass. The baby, who suffered multiple skull fractures, died the next day at a hospital. When the police hauled up Uddin, she first denied she had anything to do with the infant but later made “multiple admissions” on video, prosecutors said at the time. Uddin was given credit for serving 603 days in jail.

(L-R) Suspect Gaege Bethune & Pravin Varughese

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Three years after Indian American student Pravin Varughese’s mysterious death in the woods of Carbondale, Illinois, a Jackson County grand jury on July 13 indicted Gaege Bethune, a long-time suspect in the case, with two counts of first-degree murder. Bethune turned himself in that evening, and was held on $1-million bail. He has since posted a $100,000 bond and has been released. A bond hearing was held July 18, at which the suspect pleaded not guilty. Bethune was the last person to see Varughese, a student at Southern Illinois University (SIU) College, on the night of February 13, 2014, about the time Varughese went missing. Bethune picked up Varughese late that night, as he was returning home from a party: it is still unclear whether the two young men knew each other. Bethune was not attending

C

SIU. Varughese went missing for five days until his body was found on February 18, 2014 in a wooded area of Carbondale, Illinois. An initial investigation found that the student had died from hypothermia. But Lovely Varughese and her family hired a private investigator who determined that the cause of death was blunt force trauma. The grand jury noted that Bethune had confessed to punching Varughese multiple times in the head and face, rendering the victim “dead weight,” according to the charges. It noted that Bethune caused great bodily harm to Varughese, including forehead bruises and impressions consistent with blunt force trauma. The grand jury determined that Varughese had died of hypothermia. The second count charges Bethune with murder during the robbery.

Army Capt. Humayun Khan

BY A STAFF WRITER HARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- A Virginia lawmaker is proposing legislation that would rename two post offices for fallen military members from his district. US Rep. Tom Garrett introduced Bills that would name the University of Virginia post office after Army Capt. Humayun Khan, and another would name a Palmyra post office in honor of Navy Gunner’s Mate Dakota Kyle Rigsby. Khan, a Pakistani American, was killed in 2004 while in the line of duty in Iraq. Khan’s father, Khizr Khan, made headlines for his criticism of Donald Trump during the Democratic National Convention. Rigsby was one of the seven sailors who died aboard the USS Fitzgerald on June 17 after it collided with a container ship off the coast of Japan. Garrett’s office says in a statement that both families support the Bill.

Medical professionals in healthcare fraud BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- A couple of Indian American medical professionals in New York were among hundreds charged in a $1.3-billion healthcare billing scheme crackdown. According to the US Justice Department, among the accused were occupational therapist Mayura Kanekar and cardiologist Dr. Sebhatu Gebrezgi. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a July 13 news release called the collective action the “largest health care fraud takedown operation in American history.” “Too many trusted medical professionals like doctors, nurses, and pharmacists have chosen to violate their oaths and put greed ahead of their patients,” Sessions said. “Amazingly, some have made their practices into multimillion-dollar criminal enterprises. They seem oblivious to the

disastrous consequences of their greed. Their actions not only enrich themselves often at the expense of taxpayers but also feed addictions and cause addictions to start.” A total of 412 people across 41 federal districts, including 115 doctors, nurses and other licensed medical professionals, are being charged in the crackdown, with nearly 300 healthcare providers bring suspended or banned from participating in federal

healthcare programs. Of those charged, over 120 defendants, including doctors, were charged for their roles in prescribing and distributing opioids and other dangerous narcotics. The Justice Department said the people charged were illegally billing Medicare, Medicaid and the health insurance program that serves members of the armed forces, retired service members and their families. The allegations include claims that those charged billed the programs for unnecessary drugs that were never purchased or never given to the patients. “Healthcare fraud is not only a criminal act that costs billions of taxpayer dollars – it is an affront to all Americans who rely on our national healthcare programs for access to critical healthcare services and a violation of trust,” said Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Rare tortoise stolen from wildlife center BY A STAFF WRITER OUGLASTON, NY -- A rare 100-pound tortoise that could be a century old has been stolen from a wildlife center on Northern Boulevard. The tortoise, Millennium, was taken from his home at the Alley Pond Environmental Center at 228-06 Northern Blvd sometime between July 16 and 17 afternoons. Officials at the center were appalled when they realized the African-spurred tortoise, which is rare for the area, was missing on July 17. “It was quite shocking and disappointing because Millennium is one of our big attractions here,” said Venus Hall, an educator at the center, of the animal they rescued around 12 years ago. Millennium could be anywhere between 17 and 100 years old based on its size. Employees noticed he was gone at

D

around 4 pm on July 17 after a visitor asked to see the center’s tortoises. They then noticed that the back gate-which leads out to the woods and onto Northern Boulevard--had been tampered

with, with dents in the garden showing the gate was moved. Hall guessed this wasn’t a solo job, given the tortoise’s size, and she suspects he was hoisted over the fence.

NY man to pay price for sexual offense

N

EW YORK, NY -- A 37-yearold Indian American is set to lose his US citizenship after he was convicted of fraud for not disclosing to immigration authorities that he had sexually abused a 9-year-old child. Gurpreet Singh of Watertown was sentenced in federal court in Syracuse to three months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release, following a jury trial in January where he was convicted of knowingly obtaining US citizenship through unlawful naturalization, Acting U.S. Attorney Grant Jaquith said. Due to this conviction, Singh’s US citizenship will be revoked by law. The trial evidence showed that Singh, originally from India, repeatedly affirmed to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) authorities that he had not committed any crimes for which he was not arrested. Immigration authorities later learned that Singh sexually abused a 9-year-old child during the same time-period he was applying for citizenship. Evidence presented at trial showed that Singh deliberately failed to report his criminal activity to USCIS fearing rejection of his naturalization application. Singh pled guilty in the New York state court to a single count of sexual abuse of a minor child, after he had become a naturalized US citizen. Singh was arrested by the City of Watertown (New York) Police Department the day after his naturalization ceremony in April 2012. While on supervised release following his prison term, Singh will be required to register as a sex offender and will be prohibited from having direct contact with children under the age of 18 and from going to places where children under 18 are likely to congregate without prior permission of a probation officer.

Pharmacy owner faces 15-yr jail for drug scam BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An Indian American pharmacy owner has been charged with defrauding federal insurance programs of some $9 million, using two pharmacies in New York. Sunita Kumar, 54, who was hauled up on July 11, later appeared in Manhattan federal court before Magistrate Judge Andrew Peck. He was charged with operating a health care fraud scheme utilizing two pharmacies in Brooklyn here through which she submitted $9 million in fraudulent claims to Medicaid and Medicare. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail. Acting US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Joon Kim said that Kumar defrauded Medicare and Medicaid, public programs to assist the indigent and the elderly, by submitting $9 million in fraudulent claims. She allegedly did so by inducing people to surrender their own prescriptions and forgo their medications in exchange for kickbacks. According to the allegations contained in the complaint, Kumar, while owning one pharmacy herself and operating a second pharmacy, conducted a multimilliondollar scheme to defraud Medicare and Medicaid programs by fraudulently seeking reimbursements for prescription drugs.

NY couple sued again for fake jewelry scam

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An Indian American couple who has been accused of scamming a New York philanthropist into spending millions on fake jewelry is now being sued by a financial executive, also in Manhattan, for the same scam. Nisha Sabharwal and her husband Mohit Sabharwal have been sued by Sonia Toledo for allegedly tricking her into spending $1 million on fake jewelry. According to court documents cited in the report, Toledo met Sabharwal in 2012 and, after she essentially brought her into her family, including inviting her to holiday gatherings in Florida, she duped Toledo, a Harvard graduate, into buying the jewels. Sabharwal claimed to have “access to spectacular, antique Indian jewels, including one-of-a-kind heirlooms from the personal collection of an Indian princess,” says the suit filed last month. The jewels, however, were knock-offs. Toledo first bought a “ruby” bracelet in June 2012 for $1,800, according to the suit cited by the report. In reality, the bracelet was worth $129, the report said. The alleged scam came to light when Shelley Rubin, an art collector in New York, filed a lawsuit against the Sabharwals for providing her fraudulent jewelry that Nisha Sabharwal claimed belonged to an Indian princess. When Toledo saw those reports, she

realized she was a victim of the same scam, her court papers said. Toledo said that in 2014 alone, she paid more than $400,000--including $150,000 for two necklaces with “antique snakes”-which had an actual value of $17,500.

“Nisha actually stripped Toledo’s family heirlooms of their valuable jewels, replacing them with fakes or imitation stones,” the filing alleges. The lawsuit is seeking damages to be determined.

Preet Bharara responds to overturned conviction BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Former US Attorney in Manhattan, New York, Preet Bharara took to Twitter on July 13 to voice his opinion on the overturned conviction of former Assembly Speaker Shelly Silver. Bharara, who had prosecuted Silver on corruption charges during his US Attorney tenure that resulted in a conviction, only to have that conviction vacated by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, tweeted his thoughts on the future of the case. “The evidence was strong. The Supreme

Court changed the law. I expect Sheldon Silver to be re-tried and re-convicted,” Bharara tweeted. The Indian American attorney, who was forced out of his post in March by President Donald Trump, made a name for himself bringing high-profile names, such as Silver’s, to court, many leading to convictions. Bharara later re-tweeted the US Attorney’s vow to retry Silver, and he wrote: “SDNY will retry Silver. Evidence ‘was sufficient to prove all the crimes charged against Silver, even under the new legal standard.

Obesity gene lures kids to fast food NEW YORK: Kids’ response to advertisements of burgers, pizzas and french-fries may be the result of a key obesity gene influencing their brain to respond more to food advertisements and other cues to eat, says a study. then confirmed through the presence of parasites in the blood. The current study, published recently in the journal eLife, showed that substantial quantities

of trypanosomes that cause the disease can exist within the skin and can be transmitted back to the tsetse fly vector. “Our results have important implications with regard to the eradication of sleeping sickness. Firstly, our findings indicate that current diagnostic methods, which rely on observing parasites in the blood, should be re-evaluated and should include examining the skin for parasites,” said lead researcher Annette MacLeod from University of Glasgow in Britain. “In terms of treatment, it may also be necessary to develop novel therapeutics capable of targeting sources of infection outside the blood circulation,” MacLeod noted.

Processed meat worsens asthma IANS, LONDON

L

ove to gorge on ham, sausages and salami? Beware, a new study suggests that higher intake of cured and processed meats can worsen asthma symptoms. Cured and processed meat is rich in nitrites, which may have a role in airway inflammation — a typical feature of asthma, the study said. The findings showed that individuals who consumed four or more weekly servings of cured and

processed meat were 76 per cent more likely to experience worsening asthma symptoms. This could include difficulty in

breathing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. “This research extends the deleterious effect of cured meat on health, and the effect of diet on asthma in adults, and provides a novel analytic approach regarding the role of BMI in the diet-asthma association,” said Zhen Li from Paul Brousse Hospital located in Paris, France. The results showed that cured and processed meat plays a potential role in lung function and health, the researchers added.

LONDON: Suffering from chronic shortness of breath? Beware, you might be at risk of a potential heart failure or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), as suggested by a study. Shortness of breath, which is medically known as dyspnea, is often defined as an intense tightening in the chest, air hunger or a feeling of suffocation. “Shortness of breath is often a sign of heart or lung disease because these two organs are most closely involved in the respiratory system,” said Nasser Ahmadi, research student at University of Gothenburg in Sweden, in one of the statements. Chronic shortness of breath can also be considered as an equally important warning signal similar to high blood pressure, noted the researchers during the study. However, shortness of breath is an often overlooked symptom because people generally tend to associate it with aging. “The fact that people do not seek medical advice for their breathlessness issues is often due to the fact that people associate symptoms with the natural process of aging,” Ahmadi added. —IANS

Regular use of aspirin bad Using social media increases depression for uterine cancer patients IANS, NEW YORK

NEW YORK: Regular use of over-thecounter non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen is associated with an increased risk of dying in patients diagnosed with a type of uterine cancer. “There is an increasing evidence that chronic inflammation is involved in endometrial cancer and progression and recent data suggests that inhibition of inflammation through NSAID use plays a role,” said co-lead author of the study Theodore Brasky from Ohio State University in the US. “Our finding was surprising because it goes against previous studies that suggest NSAIDs can be used to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of developing or dying from certain cancers, like colorectal

U

cancer,” Brasky said. In the study involving more than 4,000 patients, the researchers found that regular NSAID use was associated with a 66 per cent increased risk of dying from endometrial cancer among women with Type-1 endometrial cancers, a typically less-aggressive form of the disease.

The findings suggest that compared with the total time spent on social media, use of multiple platforms is more strongly associated with depression and anxiety among the young adults. The researchers found that people who report using seven to 11 social media platforms had more than three times the risk of depression and anxiety than their peers who use zero to two social media platforms. “This association is strong
