IMAGE: Tony Callaghan and Mike Harrison with the Dead Man’s Penny and the Boomerang Marchers.
Marchers Retrace the Steps of Heroes The ANZAC Spirit was reignited on Monday afternoon when the Boomerang March made its way from Gooloogong, as they retrace the steps of the original Cooee marchers from World War 1. The marchers were met on the outside of town by several locals purposefully dressed and mounted on horseback who joined the march as it made its way into Canowindra. Canowindra High School, Canowindra Public School and St Edward’s Primary School all had students in attendance at the Morris Park Boomerang March Service and Mike Harrison, President of the Canowindra SubBranch of the RSL opened the ceremony. Orange resident Tony Callaghan brought a special piece of memorabilia to present to Mike Harrison and the community of Canowindra; the “Dead Man’s Penny”, a commemorative medallion presented to the next-of-kin of those who lost their lives in
the First World War, belonging to the family of Norman Williams, a young man born in Cargo who enlisted in the original Boomerang Marches in Canowindra, and lost his life in battle on the Hindenburg Line. The medallion came into Tony’s hands by way of his grandfather, and after more than 60 years, it has finally returned home, a living metaphor for the Boomerangs. The marchers are on their way to Bathurst and have stopped at other towns on the trail including Billimari, Cowra and Woodstock, following train lines and roads on the original march. “We aren’t trying to re-enact the march as much as we are trying to retrace the march,” said Cooee March organiser Kim Templeton. “These marches help the little towns remember their fallen soldiers and concentrate history.” By Rosi Broom

I read with interest, Ms Zimmit’s letter, Phoenix 22 October, which questions my claim concerning a patient’s right to freely choose one of the pathology service centre of the two available in Canowindra.
A community meeting will be held at 4pm on Thursday 5 November 2015 at Canowindra CWA Hall to discuss the management of trees at Canowindra Swimming Pool
Rather than questioning my assertion that patients have the right of choice of the pathology centres in Canowindra, would it not be simpler if Ms Zammit asked the two collection centres first, Healthscope and Laverty in Canowindra, if it is the legal right of patients to make such a choice?

When is the right time for aged care? As your parents or loved ones age, there are a few signs that signal it might be time to discuss how and who will look after them if they can’t remain at home. If dad has had a fall and has trouble getting up and down the stairs, if mum gets lost or confused in places she’s familiar with, it might be time to have a chat to find out what mum or dad want for their future. For Care Manager at Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre, Robynne Dresser, she understands all too well, those are challenging conversations to have. “Aged care is a very complex issue for people. But it doesn’t have to be that way. I think we need to break down some of the myths about aged care by promoting the fulfilling lives residents lead in our loving and social environment,” said Robynne. In addition to the 24 hour compassionate care and registered nursing team, residents at Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre also have access to a range of lifestyle and leisure activities. Residents take part in daily garden walks, stroll down memory lane music, singa-longs and men’s groups for woodworking projects. A hairdressing service is also available fortnightly giving further opportunity for social interaction. “I feel my mother benefits from the social life that she’s been missing at home,” said a resident’s daughter. As part of the lifestyle program the Centre also provides the resources for independent activities. Any resident can select from the wide range of DVDs, books, magazines and games that are readily available throughout the Centre. Residents also have 24 hour access to The Salvation Army chaplaincy service providing support for the spiritual and emotional needs of residents. Meal times are an important aspect of the culture at Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre. The creation of a meal and sharing it with others has significant social benefits. Seasonally changing menus offer plenty of choice, with a variety of fresh and tasty meals to choose from. To ensure the health and wellbeing of residents, all meals are also carefully nutritionally balanced. Navigating your way around the aged care system can be challenging. Robynne’s advice is to start the conversation early and find out exactly what mum and dad want for their future. To arrange a tour of Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre contact Robynne Dresser on 6344 1592.

Health Smart What You Eat is What You See Did you know your diet directly affects the quality of your tears? Good tears make for sparkly eyes and the kinds of foods we eat have a big impact on the quality of human tears. It’s important to have a well-balanced diet filled with fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and plenty of omega 3 fats, so to keep your peepers in perfect condition, eat these foods: Tomatoes are a wonderful source of vitamin C and also high in nutrients that can help prevent excessive light exposure and damage to your eye. Avocados are full of vitamin C, B6 and E and they’re also rich in antioxidants that help your macula shield intensive and damaging light. Orange Capsicums are packed with vitamin A, which improves night vision and zeaxanthin, a carotenoid that decreases your chance of macular degeneration. Fish and healthy oils play an important role in sustaining the quality of your lipid tears. If you don’t like fish, try a good oil supplement. Dark leafy greens like kale and spinach are rich in compounds that help fight cell damage to the macula. They also help to improve long term vision. Fruits high in vitamins C and A like oranges, strawberries and raspberries are a great way to nurture your eyes and produce healthy, glowing skin, especially in the areas surrounding the cornea and lens.
Three extra steps to perfect peepers 1. Sleep well: When you sleep your eyes are lubricated and irritants collected throughout the day removed. Ensuring you give your eyes a break from the computer screen is another important way of keeping your eyes fresh and clear. 2. See your optometrist: Booking an eye test is an essential way to keep your eyes looking and feeling healthy. An eye test can pick up many different eye conditions, particularly dry eye. Conditions such as type 2 diabetes, MS, high blood pressure and even tumours can be picked up at an eye test, so it’s well worth doing. 3. Stop Smoking: Quitting cigarettes can do wonders for your eye health. Smoking increases your chance of developing cataracts and can also cause agerelated macular degeneration. With the end of the year fast approaching, don’t forget to take advantage of your private health fund optical benefit before it runs out on December 31! Any unclaimed benefits will expire after this date. With a wide range of fashion eyewear brands, Hansen Optometrists in Orange will have you looking stylish this summer. They have a massive range of prescription and designer sunglasses and contac lenses, as well as eye examinations to thoroughly assess your eyes and visual efficiency.
IT’S TIME...TO USE YOUR HEALTH FUND OPTICAL BENEFIT…OR LOSE IT. You could get a stunning new set of spectacles and FREE Buddy set with little or nothing to pay.
But on Dec 31, your unclaimed optical benefits expire. So book an appointment soon! Bulk Billing available Hansen Optometrists 170 Summer Street, Orange

Be Entertained The Old Vic Inn has once again been named as a finalist in the NSW Tourism Awards after their roaring success with the Inland Tourism Awards. “We’re proud to be from Canowindra and to take our name to state things like this,” said Alison. “It helps to promote Canowindra,” said Graeme, “so everybody benefits if more people hear about it.” The Old Vic Inn is a finalist in the Standard Accommodation category, but this is nothing new to the Beasleys after they won the prestigious award in 2008.
“We’ve done it before and we know how tough it is,” said Graeme. The NSW Tourism Awards celebrate and acknowledge tourism businesses that have demonstrated outstanding achievement and success throughout the year. Cowra’s Harvest in the Park Cowra’s Brougham Park filled with people on Saturday the 31st of October to experience Harvest in the Park. A gold coin donation for the PCYC Cowra Gymnastics Club was a small price to pay with everything from homemade wares to a jumping castle available. Jewellery, clothing, makeup, children’s toys, canine accessories, breads, lollies, liquor, jams, fresh fruit and vegetables, homewares and plants, the markets had it all. Included among the dozens of stalls were The Sarbie Collection, Peewee’s Bakery, Hippity Hop Kids, K’s Collection, Felt with Love, Milla Cordial, The Coffee Van, Just Homegrown, and Origin Organic Chocolate. This year’s newest addition ‘The Peoples Pasture’, designed by Millamolong, was popular with all ages; chairs, tables and hay bales sprawled across the centre of the ac-
tion, where everyone was welcome to sit, relax and enjoy. The market wasn’t without its entertainment, with the crowd wowed by the Cowra Corroboree in a sample performance prior to their sold-out performance that night. The traditional Indigenous music seemed to bring the park to a standstill as even stallholders stepped out to watch. When the clapsticks quieted and the performance ended, Simone Bastick, one half of the local singing duo ‘Sim & Lus’, took to the stage, providing a beautiful backing track to the sounds of the market. With the next market to be held in the New Year, the market was a great chance to make a start on Christmas shopping and snag some brilliant local products as gifts. By Tracy Smith

OUR Gal Betty Jenkins
Melbourne Cup Day at Montrose House.
Dot Cain helping K’s Collection stall at Harvest in the Park last weekend.
How long have you lived in Canowindra? All my life – I was born here. What do you love most about Canowindra? It’s my home town; it’s where everyone one I know is. Do you have any hobbies or passions? I look after native animals, I do craftwork, I play bowls, I love gardening and travelling, I belong to CWA, and I’m also on the Board of Directors at the Bowling Club. Where is your favourite place in the world? I would still have to say Canowindra is my favourite place. One of the nicest places I’ve ever been is Bangalore in India. Who or what inspires you the most? My mother inspired me growing up – she was such a battler. What is your favourite music to listen to? Elvis, Rod Stewart, and I also like peaceful music – I am a lover of music! If you won the lotto how would you spend it? I would finish doing up our federation house and help out my three daughters. What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? Peace and harmony. What else can you hope for?

5 Reasons for Doing Yoga This Spring If you can breathe you can do yoga! Yoga is really for everyone – no matter what your levels of fitness, flexibility or wellness are. There are so many benefits to a regular yoga practice. Here are five to start you off 1. Stress Relief Anyone who has been to a yoga class will tell you that they feel calmer after doing yoga. The deep breathing, the concentration on the moment, the stretching and the quiet all help to balance the nervous system and will reduce stress and anxiety 2. Lowers Blood Pressure and Supports the Immune system A regular yoga practice supports the health and proper functioning of the immune system. Balancing the nervous system is part of that, because when we are in stressed-out fight-or-flight mode, the immune system is suppressed. The poses and conscious breathing reduce physical pain as well as emotional anxiety. Yoga reduces stress, improves sleep, and balances adrenal levels, blood pressure and heart rate. 3. Weight Loss A regular yoga practice can return you to your own healthy weight. An intense, sweat-it-out class will provide some calorie burn and toning, but it is really the increased mindfulness that gives you ongoing weight managing benefits. When we are centred and present, we are more likely to make healthy choices. 4. Yoga makes you smarter Practicing yoga for only 20 minutes a day can improve cognitive function, working memory, and focus. Yoga also helps with long-term effects of dementia and Alzheimer’s. 5. Increased Flexibility, Back Pain and Arthritis Many people think they can’t go to a yoga class because they aren’t flexible enough—but that is like thinking that you can’t take a shower because you are not wet (backwards, right?). Moving our joints and lengthening and strengthening muscles have all been shown to benefit in the treatment of back issues and arthritis. Yoga really is for everyone; man or woman, young or old, it benefits everyone’s health. You are welcome at the Canowindra CWA Yoga Class, 9.30-10.30 Friday mornings. You may be surprised at how good Yoga can make you feel. By Robyn Lynch

Windowrie Long Lunch The annual Windowrie Long Lunch was held on Saturday 31 October at Windowrie Homestead. Approximately 150 people attended from all around the Central West and further afield. Due to the weather, all people were housed around the house along the vine covered verandas. The food was prepared and served by Neila, and included for entrée a soy, sesame and Sichuan pepper cured beef salad, served with The Mill 2015 Verdelho and The Mill 2013 Shiraz. The main was Neila’s famous confit duck Maryland, bean and peanut salad with brioche. Accompanying the main course was the Family Reserve 2015 Pinot Gris and Family Reserve 2015 Pinot Noir. The dessert was a lime, caramelised coconut tapioca mess served with Pig in the House 2015 Sauvignon Blanc. A rare aged goat and cow milk cheese, produced in Piedmont in Italy complemented the meal. David and Wizz O’Dea are the founders of Windowrie Estate. Two of their children currently work at the vineyard with Jason O’Dea developing new ideas for further

Cabonne Council to Resist Merger Cabonne Council has reaffirmed its position to remain a stand-alone Council in the future, and will not be indicating a merger preference to the NSW State Government. Cabonne Council and other councils which have been deemed as “unfit” have until 18 November to respond to the findings and give a preference for a merger proposal, but Cabonne councillors unanimously voted not to nominate a merger preference when they discussed the matter last week. Cabonne was found to be “unfit” for the future on the grounds of “scale and capacity” after passing all the financial and sustainability benchmarks. Aside from maintaining their stand-alone stance and not putting in any merger preferences, Cabonne Council resolved to indicate the Council believes Cabonne meets “scale and capacity” and meet with any adjoining councils, “as good neighbours do”. Amalgamation – No Thank You (ANTY) Spokesperson Marj Bollinger has damned the recommendations and findings of the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) report, saying “it is impossible
to comprehend how the NSW Government could ever contemplate carrying on with this wasteful amalgamation proposal.” “ANTY will continue to stand behind Cabonne Council and fight for our survival whilst at the same time uniting with other like-minded people to stand up for the rights of the people against an arrogant state Government determined to destroy communities and self-destruct at the next election,” Marj said. In preparing its IPART submission, Cabonne Council commissioned independent consultants Morrison Low to conduct a business case on a possible CabonneOrange City Council merger. Morrison Low concluded such a merger would provide little benefit. Cabonne Council General Manager Andrew Hopkins said the Government was offering $5 million for two councils to implement a voluntary merger, and an additional $5 million for the new merged council to spend on community infrastructure. “Council is seeking advice on whether the $5m for infrastructure would extend to roads,” Andrew said.
