As the co-ordinator of the Cowra support group of adult survivors of abuse, I look for resources we could share and use to live a better life. I recently came across the CD featuring John Harper: Mate Helping Mate. John, a shearer and farmer from the Riverina, shares how he recovered from depression and how mateship plays a great part in our own recovery. Copies of such CDs are available for free at the Department of Primary Industries, Rural Support Program. Contact Sonia Muir on 6391 3611. To help on the way, there are many resources around, such as the free workshops subsidised by the Cowra support group. There are three free workshops running in Parkes in December: Friday 4 December – a half-day CPD workshop covering Foundation for Trauma-Informed Practice for all staff across

diverse service settings. Friday 4 December – an evening CPD workshop for GPs, nurses and practice staff, alerting participants to the possibility of trauma underlying presentations and discrete diagnoses. Saturday 5 December – an all-day educational workshop for the survivors of child abuse in a safe space discussing information about what that experience means and how it may affect the present. You may come with a family member or friend for support, and you do not need to tell your name, nor your story, nor do you need to participate in the workshop. Come along and listen as your possible first step in recovering. The presenter is well experienced as a survivor and a professional therapist and educator, who was well received at the last May workshop in Cowra. Thank you for your ongoing support. Regards, Pascale Stendell

Merger Wars

IMAGE: Karen Stone, Oliver Stone, Uma Kumar, Arcott Kumar and Gillian Stone at the Farewell on Friday night.

Town Farewells a Familiar Face The Canowindra Services Club filled with well-wishers on Friday night, coming together for an evening of good food and fond memories in order to farewell Dr Kumar after 44 years of service. MC Oliver Stone began by outlining the extensive collection of achievements Dr Kumar has achieved since arriving in Canowindra from India in 1971 before inviting a number of attendees to express their gratitude for all Dr Kumar had done for the town over the past four decades. “It’s been a pleasure working with you over the last 27 years,” said local pharmacist, Vicki Grant. “We will miss you and your wife, Uma. Thank you for everything you’ve done for the community.” Local Ian Brown added to the sentiment, saying “We’ve been very lucky to have someone as patient and compassionate as you in this town. On behalf of my family and everyone here, I wish you all the best for the future”.

At the end of the evening Dr Kumar was presented with a book, filled with sketches and stories of all things Canowindra and signed by all in attendance. Dr Kumar expressed how thankful he was to have spent so much time as a part of the small, friendly community. “My family are all very grateful. We will miss you all. We have some reservations about moving to Sydney and it will be a big change, but we will be able to spend more time with our family and grandchild, so it will be worth it.” The Kumars will keep their farm here and make regular visits back to Canowindra to keep an eye on that as well as to catch up with the many life-long friends they have made here. From the Canowindra community and the team at the Phoenix, we wish you both well with your future in the city. You will be greatly missed! By Tracy Smith

According to Cabonne Council, a merger of Cabonne and Orange Councils would not provide any long-term benefit for the residents of either area, reaffirming its standalone position. “Both councils are financially sound and sustainable, and are very capable of operating efficiently and providing services well into the future without the need for the merger incentive funding being offered by the NSW Government,” Mayor of Cabonne Ian Gosper said. “We’ve done extensive community consultation and we know the vast majority of our residents are opposed to a merger of any kind.” Cabonne Council will not nominate a merger preference when a further submission is lodged with the Government on November 18, despite the offer of $5 million for two councils to offset the costs of implementing a voluntary merger. “I’ve heard claims that by honouring the wishes of our residents we are penalising both Orange and Cabonne Councils, but that’s not true,” Mayor Gosper said. “In the long term, the $5m for community infrastructure is not a large amount when you consider Cabonne has a $21m roads budget alone this year.” Mayor Gosper asked whether it was worth $5m for Cabonne residents to lose their local representation and a council with a focus on rural issues. “Is our long-term right to self-determination and true local representation worth only $5m? The benefits would be shortlived,” he said, reiterating there was no guarantee the offer would cover the costs of bringing the two councils together, and residents could find themselves paying much more. According to ANTY Chairman Jock Haynes, “they have set up a political process which has given them the answer they want to hear.” By Rosi Broom

Triple J Unearths Sophie

Canowindra native Sophie Payten, also known as recording artist Gordi, has been nominated for a J Award by national radio station Triple J for Unearthed Artist of the Year. “It’s very exciting,” Sophie said. “These awards mean so much, especially to Triple J listeners. Respect in that community means a lot to me.” The radio station have become big supporters of Gordi’s music, saying Sophie couples “an obvious ear for melody with twinkly, acoustic-meets-electronic arrangements and vocal harmonies that swell and surge stronger than a riptide.” The first Gordi song added to Triple J’s

rotation was “Nothing’s As It Seems” about 12 months ago, and since then she has steadily been getting more airplay from the station. “This has been my life-long dream and they’ve been so supportive,” said Sophie. “I have so much respect for the presenters – they can change the lives of young creative people.” The J Awards have been running for 11 years and recognise the best in Australian music, with this year’s winners being announced Thursday 19 November live on air at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory, which Sophie will be attending with her parents. Here Comes The Holidays We are on the home stretch towards summer and the end of the year, and you know what that means! Yes, the Christmas holiday period is just around the corner. Are you prepared? This is the time of year when you think about it all; how will you decorate your home to make it more festive? What food will you cook for Christmas Lunch? How will you entertain friends and family on New Year’s Eve? What presents will you make or buy? Planning for Christmas can get expensive, exhausting and overwhelming, especially when you put pressure on yourself to create the Best Christmas Ever.

There’s no shame in keeping it simple though, because you don’t have to go overboard with presents, food, decorations or alcohol. Christmas is a time when most of us wind up a year of work and take some time off. It’s a time when we stop to reflect with our family and friends on how far we’ve come, as well as where we might be going. It’s a time when we give, and expect nothing in return, because “that’s what you do”. It’s a time when we reach out to people in need, and it’s a time when we have friendly conversations with strangers. Christmas has an impact on us all. For some people, the thought of the holiday season, and in particular Christmas Day, incites feelings of anxiety and impending doom. Maybe they have a dysfunctional family that erupts into arguments when forced to share a meal, or maybe they have recently lost a loved one and the idea of celebrating without this person inflames their sadness. If there is somebody you know spending Christmas by their self, why not invite them into your home and share a meal, because kindness and generosity are part of the season’s spirit and at Christmas Time, we all know – the more the merrier.

Ladies Club

Welcome to the very first column for Montrose House! Tommy wants to give a huge thank you to the ladies who attended the Melbourne Cup soiree last week. We had forty-five ladies in attendance, all of them sensationally dressed, with everyone enjoying a sumptuous lunch followed by a beautiful High Tea. Congratulations to Muriell Yeo and Marlene Grant for winning the prize for Best Dressed in their fabulous outfits. The very first luncheon for the First Wives Club will be held on Thursday 26 November, where widowed ladies can get together and socialise with likeminded people outside their comfort zone. There is a different guest speaker each month with every get-together sporting a different theme. The theme for the first luncheon is Whites & Brights and all you lovely ladies are asked to bring a plate of food. There aren’t many rules, but you do have to be a widow to participate and when you book, Tommy will let you know whether to bring a sweet or a savoury to share. The First Wives Club is for ladies who like an interesting day out with good food, good atmosphere and good company – you can’t miss this! Limited bookings are available. Call Tommy on 6344 1006.

A Glorious Garden Party

An incredible three hundred people attended the Canowindra Garden Club Garden Expo on the weekend at “Gayton”, the beautiful property of Mark and Anne Ward, with all proceeds going towards Raising a Roof for the Read Triplets. Guests wandered through the garden’s “rooms”, admiring the roses, Californian poppies, clarys sage and box elder trees, and two guest speakers – Elizabeth Swane and Sally Bourne – sharing their wealth of garden knowledge and experience. “Gardening is good for the environment, and it’s good for mental and physical health,” said Anne. “We are about educating people and promoting the love of gardening.”

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Taking a quote from the Royal Horticultural Society of England, Anne says the Canowindra Garden Club “is driven by a desire to enrich everyone’s life through plants and make the nation a greener, more beautiful place. We believe that everyone in every village, town and city should benefit from growing plants to enhance lives, build stronger, healthier and happier communities, and create better places to live. With your help we can harness the power of horticulture, one gardener at a time.” The Club meet on the third Wednesday of the month and are always seeking new members. Call Robyn Cleary (Treasurer) on 6344 3103 to register your interest.

Canowindra’s Christmas Shopping Evening is coming up in just a few weeks and there’s plenty to be excited about. With twenty five businesses participating so far, the second Christmas Shopping Evening is expanding on last year’s event in a fantastic promotion of local businesses. Between 3-7pm on Saturday 28 November, plenty of shops will be keeping their doors open to give people the chance to shop locally and spend their Christmas dollars in Canowindra. Some of the participating businesses will be offering some unmissable special deals on the day, and between 4-5pm Santa will be visiting the main street to say hello to all the kids, big and small. There will also be music with Cowra’s Kai Viti performing on the veranda of the Old Vic Inn to keep shoppers entertained throughout the evening. Considering that some shops open on Saturday, and some don’t, the Christmas Shopping Evening is a great opportunity for people to really think about what they can buy locally before going out of town. More money spent in Canowindra is good for the community so encourage your friends and family to get together and help celebrate the fantastic businesses on offer in town. Check out the Canowindra Christmas Shopping Evening Facebook page to receive updates and find out what’s happening. By Rosi Broom

CATCH OF THE WEEK

Catch of the Week makes a return to the pages of the Canowindra Phoenix in December! Our ever popular fishing competition will be running every week and from those each month a ‘Catch of the Month’ will be selected. Send us the photos of your catches for the chance to win lots of fishing goodies from Cowra Marine Centre. Remember that the minimum size for Murray cod is 55cm while the maximum is 75cm. You can email photos to editor@canowindraphoenix.com.au.

LADIES GOLF

A stroke event was played on Wednesday 28 October and Thelma Bliss came in the winner with Nett 84, with the ball sweep going to Marea. The following week was Trophy Day and now this was a very special day indeed as it was Ann Cassidy’s 80th birthday. Congratulations on this milestone Anne and best wishes to you from all past and present golfers. When it came to the golf, every player was a winner on Trophy Day, but the first to choose her mystery prize was Joyce on a count back from Helen Kemper, with both on 77 Nett. The Ball and Raffle went to Helen Kemper. Congratulations! A combined Stableford event was played last week with a small field. Faye and Edna

came through as the winners with 63 points. Annette and Eileen placed second with 62 points and Helen Kemper and Ann came third with 61 points. With scores this close, it really shows how close the competition was. A few of our members have been travelling for their game. Helen Constable, Rhonda, Annette and Eileen played in the Blue Mountains and although no one came home with any trophies, they were still able to experience the beautiful towns of Leura, Lithgow, Blackheath and Wentworth Falls. The four courses were all magnificent in their own way, each one offering a different set of challenges. The waratahs, azaleas and rhododendrons were in full bloom in the mountains and the kangaroos were at home at Lithgow. The final day at Leura was unfortunately called after only 15 holes when the fog rolled in and visibility was less than 150 meters. Duntryleague also held their tournament recently. Helen Constable, Ros, Annette, Helen Kemper and Eileen all enjoyed that beautiful course. No trophies were won but Eileen did get the longest drive prize for Division 2 on Day 2. Rhonda and Helen Constable really enjoyed the course at Wellington, too, while a few of us will be trying out Oberon next week. A big thank you is deserved to all of those who attended the Melbourne Cup Luncheon event and of course everyone who helped

make it happen. By all reports the lunch was absolutely divine, the fashion parade was inspiring and the Cup, well that all depended on the horse you backed! Everyone had a fantastic time at the luncheon. The Presentation Luncheon will be held on Wednesday 25 November. Everyone is welcome to attend, but please remember to put your names in at the Golf Club for catering purposes. The summer social golf will be commencing in the following week with a 7:30am start, and 15 holes with in-house handicapping. The upcoming golf Ex Services’ Closing Day will be held on Saturday 21 November, with the Duntryleague closing day held on Tuesday 24 November and the Canowindra Closing Day held on Wednesday 18 November, with a shotgun start at 9am. Once again, Happy Birthday Ann! These ladies who still play lovely golf after 80 are an inspiration to us all. Although golf can be played late in life, it’s never too late to start – just don’t leave it too long!
