State Fossil Emblem Nicknamed Fred The NSW Government today announced the NSW State Fossil emblem, the 370-millionyear-old fish fossil with the scientific name Mandageria Fairfaxi, has been nicknamed Fred following a state-wide competition. Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts Troy Grant said the name honours Fred Fewings, a council worker who recovered the scientifically important fossil slabs in Canowindra in 1993. “Mr. Fewings still lives in the region and nicknaming our official state fossils emblem after him recognises his contribution to our unique geological history,” Mr. Grant said. “I would like to acknowledge and congratulate the two entrants who submitted the name Fred – Maggie Teasdale, a Year 5 student of Maitland Public School and teacher Kristy White’s Year 3 class from Canowindra Public School.’

Kristy White’s class will receive a 3Dprinted model of Fred, a commemorative poster and a book on fossils. Fred was a large, air-breathing lobe finned fish that grew up to 1.7 metres in length. Member for Orange, Andrew Gee, said the Canowindra community has been vocal in its support of the name and the significance of the fossil to the region. “I’m very proud local students have placed a role in nicknaming he NSW State Fossil and I congratulate Canowindra Public School’s Year 3 Class. When I met with Miss White and the students, they couldn’t contain their excitement about their success,” Mr. Gee said. “Canowindra has a reputation as one of the best destinations for paleontology enthusiasts in the world.

Youth Mental Health Tips for the Holidays As we rapidly approach the end of the year it is a great time to reflect and express our gratitude for the good things – big and small – that have come our way in 2015. For many of us it can be a very difficult time, particularly for people experiencing isolation, loneliness and mental health issues, as we are bombarded with messages of celebrations, gifts and holidays. For young people, particularly those facing big life changes like starting a new school, higher education, or seeking employment, it can be a really challenging time. Losing the normal routine and structure of school, missing the regular contact of friends, or having to financially support themselves can cause additional pressure. Parents are key in helping young people to get support, so knowing the signs and symptoms something might be wrong, and then how to get help is vital. Whilst parents

don’t need to be able to solve everything, noticing changes and signs that something isn’t right is a good first step. You may notice they withdraw, and stop doing things they usually enjoy, seem down, worried or irritable. There is help available. Headspace, the national youth mental health foundation provides support for parents and young people aged 12 to 25 who are having a tough time. Our service is available between 9am - 1am EST over the holiday period, including Christmas Day, by calling 1800 650 890 or visit eheadspace.org.au. Wishing you and your family a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break over the holidays. Chris Tanti, CEO headspace.

QUESTION of the week and Environment program that allows homeowners and businesses to lodge applications any time from any location. The program, known as the Electronic Housing Code, provides faster planning approval times, fewer paper applications or queues at Councils and enables some applications to be submitted electronically 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

IMAGE: Children singing at the Christmas Carols at All Saints on Saturday night.

A good crowd attended the Christmas carols at All Saints on Saturday night to join in with the local choir singing a range of Christmas carols. Many of the favourites were sung. This was followed by supper provided by the local CWA ladies. Canowindra Public School received a $3,500 Eco Schools Grant from Member for Orange Andrew Gee last Wednesday, which will help instill environmental awareness and appreciation in children. “Canowindra Public school has proposed a project for an outdoor learning area and garden, which includes raised vegetable garden beds and a chook pen on a previously unused piece of land within the school grounds,” Mr. Gee said.

The Christmas hamper for Canowindra Bingo was won by Beulah Dillon (lst prize) 2nd prize went to Vicki Bowman and 3rd prize to Helen Fisher. Thank you to everybody who participated. Remember to get Water Safe for the holiday season. One of the ways to do this is to ensure that at least one family member has completed a basic First Aid course with the Red Cross. These courses could save a life, particularly a young child, as children and young adults are particularly at risk from drowning fatalities. Having the skills and confidence to react and respond correctly in an emergency can minimise the impact of an injury, assist with recovery and even save a life, and it means you can relax a little more this summer. Call 1300 367 428 to reserve a place in a local course.

Local Canowindra cancer patients who need to travel to Sydney for treatment during the upcoming holiday season will be provided with available, reduced rate accommodation options thanks to a recent partnership with Cancer Council NSW and AccorHotels. This accommodation is available not just for patients, but for their carers and immediate family as well. For further information call Fiona on 02 6392 0800. Building a new house or doing a simple renovation will be easier in the Cabonne area thanks to a Department of Planning

The committee behind the Canowindra Christmas Lunch are busy finalising plans for the free community lunch at the Canowindra Bowling Club with local organiser Lyn Rasmussen happy to report that they now have more than enough hands to ensure the day goes smoothly. “Though the lunch originally began for the lonely or struggling, everyone is welcome. We always have more than enough food, so the more, the merrier! It’s not just for people on their own, but the whole family,” said Lyn. “We’re extending the invitation to all locals who will be home for Christmas, as well as people from surrounding towns, there’s still plenty of time to put your name on the list.” On the menu is a smorgasbord of ham and turkey, supplied by Belubula Butchery, homemade salads, and a dessert of pavlova and sticky date pudding made by Canowindra@Home. Transport is available for those who need it, although unfortunately due to the unavailability of the taxi, it cannot be provided for those in wheelchairs. Bookings are essential and should be made by the 18th December at Belubula Butchery, Canowindra Health Centre, St Vincent de Pauls and the Canowindra Food Basket. For more information, contact Lyn Rasmussen on 0409 867 002. By Tracy Smith

PJL Raises Money For Breast Care Nurses PJL, a local mining services business in Orange raised over $9,000 on Friday when they hosted a bbq, conducted raffles and auctioned off some items which were generously donated by local businesses. Ben Hockey, Orange Operations Manager said, ”the project was started 8 weeks ago and our clients CSA Mine Glencore, at Cobar decided to support this worthy cause by painting the loader pink, in support of breast cancer and particularly the employment of local breast care nurses.” Ben said, “There was over 15,000 parts used in this refit, and some 4,000 man hours.” Breast Care nurses are located in Parkes, Dubbo, Mudgee, Bathurst and Orange. Rescue Me “Adopt a Pound Pet” Program a Hit at Finding Homes Why not save a life and “Adopt a Pound Pet” in Cowra? Rather than look to pet shops and puppy farms for your next family pet, give a home to an innocent animal only after a second chance at life. Council has a number of adorable doggies and cute kitties they’re trying to find affectionate homes for, with the new program already successfully housing dozens of abandoned cats and dogs. “The program aims to reduce the euthanasia of cats and dogs that are brought to the Pound with no identification; Pound animals that are adopted are micro-chipped by Council to reduce the cost of registration by the new owner,” Director Environmental Services, Kate Alberry said. “Council also offers a trial period of two-weeks to ensure that the animal is wellsuited to its new environ-

ment before the animal is registered,” Kate added. To adopt a Cowra Pound Animal, you only need to pay the following registration fees: • $192 for undesexed dog or cat • $52 for undesexed dog or cat owned by a registered breeder • $52 for a desexed dog or cat • $21 for a desexed dog or cat owned by an eligible pensioner. Want to give these Pound animals a new home? Contact Cowra Council on (02) 6340 2041 to find out more!

Canowindra Boy Canowindra Medical Practice Offers a Wide Range of Services Weds at Bowral Dr. Kaipu would like to thank everybody for making himself and Dr. Padma feel welcome to Canowindra and said they are certainly look forward to becoming involved in the community in 2016. The owner of the practice Dr.Kaipu has a long history of being involved in the medical profession, having already established a practice in Molong before making the decision to take over Dr. Kumar’s surgery. Trained in Hyderabad India, and then working in Emergency Services in the UK, prior to moving to Westmead Hospital when he continued his work in Emergency Services, he then became part of a larger practice in Dubbo, finally establishing his own practice in Molong. He has a Diploma in skin cancer surgery and in dermatology. He sees skin cancers as one of the biggest causes of death in Australia, and one cancer which needs to be caught early to ensure recovery. In the practice in Canowindra Dr. Kaipu says “We would like to provide a range of services including areas of womens health, men’s health, skin cancer treatment, dermatology, cosmetic medicine, including spi-

On 16th October 2015, former Canowindra boy Jason Gilroy married Renee Masters from Robertson, at a beautiful ceremony at Gibraltar Hotel, Bowral. Jason was attended by Chris Gilroy, Andrew Neville and Bryant McEvilly, whilst Renee was attended by Jessica Ditton, Rebecca Webb and Jessica Maloney. Renee is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Masters of Robertson and Jason is the son of Heather Gilroy from Victoria and Peter Gilroy from Canowindra. der veins, and of course now with the services of Laverty located onsite, this makes us a local practice offering a range of services. Dr. Padma specialises in children and women’s health, Dr. Craddock specialises in skin cancer, and Dr. Kharshini, who works part-time is in general practice.” One of the biggest benefits of attending the practice is that same day appointments are available, which means that there is a no wait period which benefits the whole community.

Will The Kookaburra Fly Again? It is great news that the Canowindra Hot Air Balloon Challenge has been scheduled for April next year. The big questions is will the Kookaburra fly again? Local balloonist, Richard Swansborough and ‘Kookaburra’ pilot Martin Moroney have offered to put $10,000 of their own money into restoring the ‘Kookaburra’ balloon. The balloon has been stored for a few years, since it was last inspected by an expert from Camerons Balloons from the UK, when it was quoted as costing approximately £35,000 to make it ready for flight again. Both Richard and Martin initiated the “Save Our Kookaburra” posters and petitions that you may have seen around town and their petition collected 257 signatures, so there is a lot of local support to get it back into the air. Their offer of $10,000 is now being assessed by a committee that was recruited at a meeting on 2nd December at the Services Club. The two other proposals discussed were either scrapping the balloon and selling the bits of equipment that are worth anything to make a memorial to Frank Hackett-Jones, or handing the balloon over to the Historical Society to make an exhibit for their “History of Ballooning” project. This week, Paul Gibbs, from the Australian Ballooning Federation is in Canowindra and will be inspecting the Kookaburra with Kel Lewis who is one of the custodians of the Kookaburra. Whilst it is great to have an offer to get this back in the air, it would still need to be decided who would retain ownership and be responsible for it’s ongoing upkeep. Let us know what you would like to see happen with the Kookaburra.

The weeks of waiting are finally over for the class of 2015 and their teachers with the release this Wednesday of the Higher School Certificate results and Merit List for Distinguisher Achievers. The results were received with a range of emotions for the twenty students from Canowindra High School who successfully studied and completed their HSC across twenty four courses. The best performance for the school was recorded in English Extension 2 by Rachel Wynn who received an E4 placing her in the top 26% of the state. Other subjects where students performed well were Senior Science, Biology, Visual Arts, Legal Studies and Agriculture. All Extension courses returned good results in line with school expectations. Overall the results were very solid and complimented the student’s previous success in being recognised with major awards at the school’s Annual Presentation Night and gaining early entry to a range of universities. Across all subjects many of the students achieved their personal best and are to be congratulated for their commitment and hard work. On an individual level, Regan Hughes, Sarah Clunes, Jennifer Holmes, Melana Pearce, Nick Perry, Hayley White and Rachel Wynn all achieved sound results attaining multiple band 5’s and 4’s. The teachers are very pleased with the student’s performance and commend them for their success and achievement of the rewards of their study and preparation. For those intending to attend university the school is looking forward to now hearing of their success with gaining the required University Admissions Index (UAI.) We wish all students the very best in achieving their goals throughout the future.

Congratulations... The students and staff of Canowindra High School congratulate Year 12, 2015 on their success in the HSC and wish them well for their future endeavours. Strive To Do Well

Superb Succulents There seems to be growing interest in cactus and other forms of succulent plantswhether it’s for a creative, eye catching potted display or plants that provide structure and colour in an easy care garden bed. Two of the succulent plants that have proven themselves as hardy to heat and frost in our region and which provide excellent summer colour are Sedum mexicanum (Gold Mound) and Sedum spectablis (Neon or Autumn Joy). The Gold Mound is an attractive ground cover and the latter two cultivars produce showy masses of pink/red flowers through summer and autumn and come back with multiplying new blue/green foliage growth in spring. Talking of succulent groundcovers, there is a new cultivar of the Australian native pigface (Carpobrotus rossi) called Pink Passion which produces masses of pink flowers in summer. Agave, Aloe and Yucca are succulent plants that can grow very large as feature plants in low maintenance, dry garden beds. The leaves of these plants can be very spikey so they are best grown away from pathways. There is a blue/green agave that seems to handle the frost and summer sun in my garden and it is forming new rosettes around the initial plant each year. There are some very creative and attractive forms of potted succulent plants that feature strongly in trendy home shows and lifestyle magazines. Some of the smaller growing cactus plants that are great for such use are Rebutia, Echeveria, Aeonium and Crassula. Large pots with multiple, different cactus types such as these look fantastic and require little care. Zygocactus are a favourite hanging basket plant for many people. It has magnificent shows of complex, fuschia like flowers at the end of their segmented stems in winter. Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery
