Great Gatsby Gala The Bee’s Knees

They say a little party never killed nobody but it definitely caused a few sore heads on Sunday after the event of the year, The Great Gatsby Gala! The roaring 20’s themed ball was held to help raise funds for the Canowindra Preschool after they were told their State Government funding was to be dramatically reduced. The Management Committee and Preschool staff realised that if Canowindra Preschool, which has been a community managed school for nearly 60 years, was to survive the cuts, they needed to diversify their services to increase their enrolments therefore allowing them to operate five days a week. “Like all great plans this requires a substantial amount of money,” said Mandy Townsend, President of Canowindra Preschool Committee; “Canowindra Preschool has always embraced and benefited from the wonderful community support and spirit of Canowin-

dra and we are so grateful and humbled to be blessed with it again.” The Canowindra Services Club was transformed into a glamourous speakeasy for the night, complete with a glitzy photo booth set up by Michaela Davis from Central West Events & Hire. Tommy Jeffs catered, dishing up delicious lamb and filo wrapped chicken before auctioneer Damien Stephenson began the bidding for a range of fabulous prizes. MC Nick Jacobs kept the night running smoothly and band, Trouble With Johnny, got the crowds on the dancefloor doing the Charleston and Lindy Hop. The total amount raised on the night was $23,500, smashing the original $10,000 target. “We wish to extend a very heartfelt thank you for glamming up and getting into the spirit of Gatsby and supporting Canowindra Preschool Kindergarten” Mandy said.

LETTERS Dear Editor, I would like to thank all the people that were involved in the hugely successful, Great Gatsby Gala that was held Saturday (4th June), in aid of Canowindra Preschool. We raised a massive $23 500, which will help with the plans to extend and diversify the services provided by the Preschool. 150 people attended, there were feathers, sequins, moustaches and hats everywhere, it was quite the spectacle. Thank you to all our party goers for embracing the spirit of Gatsby! Thank you to the staff, parents and committee of Canowindra Preschool that helped in so many different ways, baking; collecting prizes; decorating; selling tickets and cleaning up. It was a huge team effort and couldn’t have happened without your help. Every day businesses in and around Canowindra are approached to donate to something, and we were so very humbled by the overwhelming generosity of every single one of our sponsors. Thank you to all of you.

The Gala wouldn’t have ran as smoothly as it did without the help from Canowindra High Hospitality students and Karen Pickering, who helped prepare and serve the meal; Michaela Davis from Central West Events and Hire; Damien Stephenson, our auctioneer; Nick Jacobs our MC and Tommy Jeffs who was the major driving force behind the evening. A huge thank you to them all. The Great Gatsby Gala, was an amazing example of wonderful community spirit; businesses, families and friends pulling together to make sure that our preschool has a secure and successful future. Most Successful Yet Mill2Mill Bike Ride So Far

In March, 48 riders, supported by 12 volunteer support crews, cycled 577 kilometres from Gunnedah to Manildra for the Mill2Mill charity bike ride. The ride, which raises funds and awareness of the resources and support networks available to those suffering depression and anxiety, along with regional small schools and community organisations, was the most successful one to date. Organisers of the ride presented $117,423 to chosen recipients on Friday at MSM Milling. The organiser of Mill2Mill, MSM Milling Director Pete Mac Smith, said; “What made this ride different to our previous charity rides was the inclusion of an authorised and trained mental health spokesman Jeremy Suggett. Jeremy rode the four-day event with us and spoke to children at schools along the route about the importance of good mental health and how to help a friend in need. In addition to the formal talks with students, Jeremy also shared his story with us, the riders. He started important conversations to create pathways that gave other

riders the courage to open up about their own situations and experiences. These are the very conversations we all really need to be having each and every day.” “It’s an absolute honour to present beyondblue with a total of $97,260 in addition to the $14,150 to Manildra community organisations such as the Manildra Men’s Shed, the Showground Trust and the Montana Skatepark and $6,000 for regional schools, including three in Manildra” he continued. Beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman thanked the Mill2Mill team and Jeremy Suggett for dedicating their time and energy to supporting beyondblue. “Keeping the pedals moving to ride 577kms in four days is an amazing achievement. It’s even more admirable when the motivation is to improve the lives of Australians- including those facing depression and anxiety, and their families” she said. Pete Mac Smith said “Planning will get underway in coming months for the next ride in 2018.”

Canowindra Health Service has recently installed a brand new call bell system to better assist staff to deliver patient care. The new Acetek Nurse Call system allows patients and staff to call for help if required and includes an emergency call system which is transmitted to all areas of the hospital. A new after-hours buzzer at the front entrance of the facility and ambulance bay is also part of the new system. Canowindra Acting Health Service Manager, Tara Bushell, said the new system is a great improvement on the facility’s previous one whilst also being a boost to local health care delivery. “Previously our call bell system indicated what room the patient was in, but with some patients sharing rooms, sometimes it was not immediately clear which patient had pressed the call bell,” Ms Bushell said. “Patients can be assured that the new system will greatly assist nurses in Canowindra because they will be able to tell exactly where the patient requiring assistance is located. The annunciator boards also give us much more information including how long it has been since the patient called the bell.” The new system has been operational since May and was funded by the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) as an investment of $77,000. WNSWLHD has had the Acetek Nurse Call system installed in 7 facilities around the area within the last 12 months, and is looking for further opportunities to install this new equipment in more facilities in the coming year.

Winter Has Finally Arrived… Well I don’t know about you but all this cold, wet weather is making me want to revisit my winter wardrobe! The weather has turned and it is definitely warm woolly weather time. But just because the weather is dreary doesn’t mean we have to be swamped in a sea of greys, blacks and browns. The stock I have in store at the moment is bursting with colours. I find on a wet dreary day, putting on a warm, bright jumper makes my day a little brighter. I am stocking all types of woollen jumpers from fine Merino layering pieces in all colours from Hedrena (an Australian label based in Melbourne) to heavier pieces from Michael Ridley and Jump. I also have a terrific range of coats from Pretty in Pink including puffer jackets and woollen coats in all colours. I also stock

leather gloves and beautiful scarves to keep you that little bit warmer. I have warm pants in store now including woollen pants from Macjays in New Zealand and cords from Corfu. Not Your Daughter’s Jeans have also done a moleskin feel denim in black and dark blue which sells very well as they are a thicker fabric and keep you nice and warm. In our climate we need these warmer pieces to get through our winter. As a mother of two children I know how cold it can be standing on the side of a sporting match in the middle of July. I think we are in for a long cold winter, ladies. So if your wardrobe is looking a little flat and dull then call into Kendal and shout yourself a new outfit. Take care and keep warm, Kendal x

June Is The Time For Planning The word ‘tax’ has had a bad run, but tax doesn’t have to be taxing! The goal at YBM is to provide a local, high value service that allows individuals and businesses alike to pursue their goals whether in business growth, tax management or retirement. And at this time of year it’s important to focus on planning. Tax planning should be customised to suit you and undertaken with the assistance of an expert. When planning this June, consider certain strategies available for small business entities, such as the immediate write off deductions for capital items and

bringing forward expenses into the 2016 financial year. This time of year is also ideal for planning and forecasting for the new financial year. YBM have refined a process of identifying both the goals and the concerns of clients, and work with them to map a plan for the coming years. This includes a cash flow forecast and projected profit and loss. It is imperative to be forward thinking so you can plan for your businesses success and reach your personal and business goals. How long have you lived in Canowindra? We bought land in Canowindra 12 years ago but finally moved into our house in 2011. Do you enjoy it? Certainly do! Canowindra’s name rang true to us the very first time my beautiful wife and I visited 18 years ago. It had been our dream as a young couple to live in the country. Where do you work? My primary job is working for the Western NSW Local Health District as a Regional Nurse Educator. My second job is working for the NSW Department of Health’s Education Unit called HETI (Health Education Training Institute) and my third job is working in one of Canowindra’s tasty food outlets, Pizza and Souvlaki Co. What do you like to do in your spare time? Work on our property. I have sheep, chickens, cats, dogs, an awesome wife and two amazing teenage daughters. Feathers and fur farming is the easy part! How do you like your coffee? Sore topic! I loved coffee; it just didn’t return the love. What makes you laugh? Fart scenes in movies usually do it. Billy Connolly’s skits on colonoscopy preparations and prostrate examinations are my go to whenever I’ve have a bad day!

The Salvation Army has sent a big thank you to the Australian public for their generosity after $4,753,750 was raised around the country this weekend as part of the Red Shield Appeal for 2016. Salvation Army Communications and Fundraising Director, Leigh Cleave, said she is pleased with the results, particularly given the high level of need around the country. “We thank Australian’s for their incredible generosity towards those in need and we are especially grateful for the thousands of volunteers that assisted us over the weekend, in particular, the number of young people who chose to give a few hours of their time” she said.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

Mrs Cleave said data released by The Salvation Army in the past week had highlighted the importance of the Red Shield Doorknock. “The report revealed a large amount of our clients live off just $17 a day after housing is paid for, over half go without five or more basic items such as medical care and three meals a day; and nearly 70% live under extreme housing stress,” she said. Captain Mark Williamson, the Chaplain at Moyne, was outside IGA last Thursday collecting for the Red Shield Appeal. Mark was joined by Moyne residents, who kindly volunteered.

CANOWINDRA SPORT WOMEN’S BOWLS

No bowls were played on Tuesday due to Canowindra hosting the District Triples on Monday 6th June to Wednesday 8th June. Sadly all four of the Canowindra teams have been defeated. Results of the District Triples winners will be in next week’s news. Club members would like to express and extend their deepest sympathy to the family of Gwynne Rice who passed away on Friday 3rd June in Parkes at the great age of 101. Gwynne was the current patron of the CWDWA and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She and her husband lived in Canowindra many years ago and Gwynne was a wonderful member of the club.

DID YOU KNOW

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

Your vote will help shape Australia. To learn more
