Ag Producers Forum Held For Local Farmers

On Tuesday Local Land Services Central Tablelands hosted an Ag Producers Forum at the Canowindra Services Club. Julie Reynolds of Local Land Services organised the day, which included four guest speakers and the latest information on livestock, pulses and market supply chains. “We have hosted three of these across the region in Mudgee, Bathurst and now Canowindra” said Julie; “The main reason we’ve created these events is to get feedback on the services we’re providing and provide local producers with some of the latest developments.” Local Land Services are relatively new, having been formed two and a half years ago by combining three organisations; Livestock Health and Pest Authority, Catchment Management Authority and Agricultural Advisory Services of the Department of Primary Industries. “This is where our responsibilities came from” said Ian Rogan,

Chairman of Local Land Services Board who attended the forum; “We also have a role in the emergency services so that if farmers are affected by floods or fires it’s our job to help them.” Their services also include helping farmers control pest animals and weeds along with agricultural productivity advisory services and natural resource management. Presentations on the day were by Rob Hart of Hart Bros Seeds on the integration of pulses into cropping rotations, Jasmin Nixon of Livestock Strategic Operations, Teys Australia who discussed branded beef programs, Troy Cruikshank of MH Premium Farms who demonstrated the corporation farming model, and current programs and services delivered by Local Land Services advisory staff. “We hope the information we have provided will be relevant to the farming community of Canowindra and others across the region” said Ian.

Dear Editor Canowindra people can’t get sick any more. Having recently spent a lengthy stint in Canowindra Hospital, I came away amazed and disappointed at how the government has allowed this service to fall into the state that it is currently in. As a long-time resident of the district, I have seen this once great hospital at Canowindra progressively wind down from a 40 bed capability to a 20 bed acute care facility, to its current capacity of 10 beds. Of these, the majority are taken up by out of town rehabilitation patients. Where is the priority for local patients? Like I said Canowindra people can’t get sick, they have nowhere to go.

deny the people of Canowindra a modern health facility that it deserves or are they going to let it fade away through natural attrition, so that the locals will have to travel to get the medical services and care that they require. Lastly, I would like to thank the staff at the hospital for the kindness, caring and consideration that they gave to me on my recent admission to the hospital. Their dedication to their profession was 10 out of 10 and I sincerely thank them for looking after me while I was there. Yours Sincerely, Bruce Whalan

It seems to me that there is an unwillingness to grow or even maintain current staffing levels at the hospital. Is this a deliberate move to downsize the facility and

Get Festive For Christmas In July! Whoever says Christmas should just be confined to one month of the year has obviously never experienced the joy of Christmas In July! In the run-up to the festive month we are inviting all Canowindra businesses and anyone who owns a shop front to participate in the Canowindra Phoenix Christmas In July Promotion. Last year’s winners were Debbie and Graham Rice of the Canowindra Newsagency who were one of the first to put their displays up and received many comments on how beautiful and eye-catching it was. “Everyone is invited to get creative and dress up their windows and the best dressed window will receive a night away for two people” said Roselea Buttigieg, Phoenix Sales Manager. The location of the getaway has not yet been announced however our mystery judges will be making their selection of the best dressed window on 29th July, so stay posted! In the meantime, why not start brainstorming on ideas for your windows and get into the Christmas spirit a little early this year to make the town twinkle.

Maintain The Rage Following the continuing turbulent politics of potential mergers, a rally will be held on Saturday 18th June from 10am in an effort to ‘maintain the rage’ of communities against amalgamation. The rally, which will be held outside the Cabonne Council Chambers, Bank Street in Molong, will be part of other events state wide and is being organised by the Cabonne ANTY Campaign. Other Councils and anti-merger organisations will rally in their own communities on the same day in an effort to ensure that the NSW Government is aware of how many locals are currently feeling. ANTY Committee representative, Marj Bollinger, has said that we need this rally to protect our democracy. “Give a voice to your vote, keep local local, stop the killings of jobs and growth in regional NSW. We demand that local Government elections in September this year are for all areas, don’t let them carry on with administrators leading our future” she said. The ANTY Campaign currently have a court case being considered. “With cracks

IMAGE: Cabonne residents send a clear message to the Premier

starting to appear in the Baird Government process we need to keep the pressure on. There’s a lot of media surrounding the amalgamation and we need to be heard or they’ll think that Cabonne is ok to be forced to merge, you can make the difference,” Marj said. The rally outside the Cabonne Council Chambers will last for around 30 minutes with speakers from the Steering committee and the Mayor of Cabonne. Many politicians will be invited to attend. “We want to publicise this rally now so that it’s fresh

in your minds, please help promote this widely” said Marj. During the rally a large ballot box will be used as a prop and will be referred to in the speeches. Cabonne is due to have a State bi-election around early September. The rally and similar initiatives are showing to be popular with local communities. Communities that have expressed their interest so far include; Cabonne, Oberon, Gundegai, Tumbarumba, Queanbeyan, Gloucester, Taree, Harden, Cootamundra, Boorowa, Armidale and Guyra.

Now’s The Time To Buy

IMAGE: Mark Wilson and Cass Forbes outside of their new house in Orange

Looking Forward to A New Chapter Together

Last week, young local couple Mark Wilson and Cass Forbes awoke at around 2am to find their house on Cargo Road engulfed in flames. Luckily, the couple had a smoke alarm installed which went off and allowed them both to escape the house to safety, where they called close friends Mat Watson and George Delaney who came to their aid and the emergency services, who put out the fire. “We’d like to thank NSW Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Service the police and the ambulance, they all did a very professional job under the circumstances” said Mark. The event has provoked an outpouring of well-wishes and offerings of help on the pairs Facebook pages. However, the couple have remained positive and upbeat despite the accident and are now encouraging everyone to invest in a smoke alarm. Cass wrote on her Facebook page, “Mark and myself are doing ok, the main thing is

we are safe and we are extremely lucky… If that alarm hadn’t woken me up in order for me to wake Mark up, grab our phones and climb out of the window to safety then who knows what the result would have been. My wish is for everyone to listen and purchase a smoke detector because they do save your life.” The duo had already been planning to move to Orange before the fire so have now been able to move into their new house this week. “It’s affected Cass a lot more than myself,” said Mark, who recently proposed to his now fiancé; “I’ve lost everything but on the plus side I don’t have to move everything now or clean the house before we left so that’s a bonus!” he joked. The couple now plan to begin their new life together in Orange and have said they’ve grown much closer due to the ordeal. We wish them both the best of luck.

Rural Property Specialist, Ainslie Toole at Landmark Harcourts Forbes, has sold 10 Rural Properties in just three months, which has led to a shortage of listings in the district. Talking to our leading national agents in all states across the country at a recent national conference it was found that there is a shortage in most areas. This means there has never been a better time to buy a rural property. The combination of record low interest rates and a great season with strong commodity prices is rarely seen. In almost 20 years of specialising in rural property sales this is the first time Landmark Harcourt have ever had less than 10 rural properties listed. Properties that have been sold recently include Brotherony & Everton at Condobolin, Overton in Forbes, Ingaladdie in Grenfell, Valhalla at Grenfell and Happy Valley in Forbes, all of which were sold within an extremely short time frame. With record low interest rates investors are also looking at rural properties as part of their portfolio. Rural properties can be leased at 4-5% - a significantly better return than current bank interest and they have the potential for capital gain. Landmark Harcourts Forbes have qualified buyers that are ready to buy broad-acre cropping country, irrigation and rural properties in the Forbes, Grenfell, Condobolin, Eugowra, Gooloogong, Parkes and Trundle districts. Landmark Harcourts is the only national company with international offices throughout China, Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa and America. IMAGE: Not all of us want to be Snow Whites when it comes to housekeeping

House Keeping Made Easy

We’ve all been there, the house is a pig sty, the dishes are piling up, there’s mud traipsed through the carpet and the shelves are covered in dust. It’s all too easy to let your house get a bit messy, especially if you work, have kids or are just a normal human being who often has better things to do than perpetually sweep the house ‘Snow White’ style, whistling while you work. It’s also just as easy to spend a day off cleaning the entire house and vowing to never let it get messy again only to be in the exact same position a week later. So how can we make it easier to keep the house cleaner and free up our spare days for much more fun activities? One of the best things to do is turn ‘later’ into ‘now’. If you walk by and see a towel on the floor or dishes on the counter don’t de-

lay sorting them out until later, pick them up now! This will help avoid an accumulation of ‘laters’ that can turn into ‘lots’. How to identify ‘laters’ and ‘nows’; If it takes less than two minutes, do it now. If something spills, wipe it up, if there’s some socks in the dishwasher, hang them on the line. Leaving it for a later time could mean those socks need to be rewashed and that spill is stuck on the counter. Finish chores before you have a break, don’t stop and have breakfast or read a book as you’ll more than likely not want to go back to grafting. And of course, clean as you go. This sounds obvious, but cleaning up little by little as you do something which causes a mess can mean you don’t have to clean at all once you’ve finished. Happy housekeeping!

Funeral Notice

Hello Readers, Welcome to this month’s column from Montrose House. Winter is finally here and the fires are burning at Montrose House. We have had a nice and steady gathering of families and local parties this month. It started with hosting my sister Junee’s 80th birthday with 46 family members in attendance. Junee is my oldest sister out of my 13 siblings so it was a wonderful catch up for all the family members in the graceful surrounds of Montrose House, such a lovely day had by all. For the June long weekend I had a house full with a great crowd of balloonists here for Richard Swansborough’s Balloon Weekend. We hosted people from Sydney, Bowral and Canberra in our Bed and Breakfast rooms and they all loved the wonderful atmosphere and sunny weather here in Canowindra town. Local lady Lorna Cody celebrated her 70th birthday with a gorgeous lilac themed luncheon with her family hosted by hubby Bill Cody. They are a gorgeous happy family and there was lots of laughter and great food for this lovely lady’s special day. Also this month I hosted a 00’s ladies luncheon for a lovely bunch of ladies all celebrating special milestones at the moment for their 60th, 70th and 80th birthdays. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all who attended and the tables were decorated in gorgeous red and golds. We now have a very busy couple of weeks coming up for Montrose House with lots of Christmas in July lunches and dinners happening with groups from Orange and Forbes coming to town. Get a group of family or friends together and enjoy this festive season here at Montrose House. The house will be done up like a traditional English Christmas with hearty food and a great atmosphere with the comfort of the fires. Just give me a call at the Deli Lama. Take care and be kind to each other, Tommy x

Dorset Championship On This Weekend

The 2016 NSW Dorset Championship is fast approaching, with a pleasing number of entries from across New South Wales. This is the 30th year of the historic Championships, which will be held in Cowra and consist of top quality Poll Dorset and Dorset Horn sheep on exhibition. This celebratory year is seeing an increased interest from various sponsors and donors, including Bromar Engineering who are the Supreme Exhibit Sponsor and are generously supplying a lick feeder. McClintock Machinery have secured the Mixed Pair Trophy and are donating a Kubota lawn mower as the prize. Clipex Sheep Handling Equipment are also a new addition to the sponsor group. Chief Steward Roger Traves said; “We’d like to thank all our sponsors and donors for their interest and generous contributions to this prestigious event of showing the best Dorset sheep in NSW. We’re expecting 180 to 200 sheep at this year’s event from approximately 20 exhibitors.” The event is not only a way to showcase the quality of breeds, it also has a great social aspect where breeders and families from all over New South Wales can enjoy fellowship on the day and has a reputation as one of the

friendliest shows held in the calendar year. “We are looking forward to a great show of Dorset sheep and reminiscing on our history where we can see the development of both the Dorset Horn and Poll Dorset Breeds,” said Roger Traves. The 2016 NSW Dorset Championships will be held on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th June, concluding at lunch.” The quality of all sheep present at the Cowra Dorset shows is testament to the breeders and working committees. We hope to see all interested persons come along and enjoy our show” said Roger. CANOWINDRA SPORT WOMEN’S BOWLS The winners of the final of the District Triples played on Wednesday 8th June was won by the Cowra team of Sharon Bohanna, Dawn Dye and Sharon Hubber who defeated the Parkes team of Rosemary Mitchell, Cherie Frame and Liz Byrne 1817. The teams were 17 all on the 18th end and an extra end was required with the Cowra team scoring 1 shot and winning the final. Liz Byrne did not play in the final as she was not available, so Cherie Frame skipped and the sub. Rhona Wendt played second. Congratulations to the Cowra team, the Triples Champions for 2016. It was a great final to watch. Well done Sharon, Dawn and Sharon. The Triples Championship Final was played on Tuesday 14th June between Joice McNaught (sub) for Betty Jenkins, Jill Messenger and Colleen Crump who defeated Libby Balcombe, Nancy Morrow and Margaret Gosper 15-12. Congratulations to Colleen’s team, the Triples Champions for 2016. There were 4 games of three bowls played: Ellen Petty and Daph Bryant defeated Shirley Robson and Bobbie Turner. Dianne Mooney and Moyna Rue defeated Radka Tatterson and Diane Slattery 18-11. Jean Roth and Jenny Middleton defeated Gwen Haydon and Jeanette Wheeldon 1410. Deanna Noble and Sheryn O’Malveney defeated Pauline Carroll and Diane Slattery 22-17. The Lucky Draw was won by Moyna Rue with No. 1. The Club’s Annual General Meeting is being held on Tuesday 28th after bowls. Nominations are still required for President, Secretary, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer. All other positions have been filled. The ladies have teams competing in the District Fours and the Senior Fours being played at Parkes Railway Diggers from Monday 20th until Wednesday 22nd June. We wish them good bowling and some good luck.

When it comes to working out, activities such as running and cycling may not be the best choices because of the increased lack of balance. However, water exercise is a safe zone for exercise and is widely recommended for people of all ages, particularly for those in the 65-plus age group. Because of its buoyant nature and hydrostatic pressure, aquatic exercisers see marked increases in bodily awareness, flexibility, and strength while simultaneously decreasing their risk of diabetes, heart failure and accidental falls. If you’re over 65 and seeking an alternative to land-based workouts to maintain strength, increase coordination and improve mental health, dip a toe in the world of water exercise.

PYTHONS NEWS The boys will face Orange Aggies at Orange Agricultural College on Saturday. The long weekend bye was much appreciated by the Pythons after a tough match against Blayney. Now training again, the Pythons hope to fire up and get the much needed win against Orange Aggies which will finish the central part of the draw. After this match the Pythons will move into the southern part of the draw which includes Temora, Cootamundra, Condo, Grenfell, Blayney and West Wyalong. A lot of results haven’t gone the Pythons way this year so come and support the rugby union boys in Orange this Saturday and encourage them to get a few more wins to boost their season!

WATER EXERCISE THE ELDERLY

FOR

As you age, your risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, weight gain, and falls increases dramatically. But, growing older doesn’t have to be a drag. You have the power to maintain your health by watching what you eat, stimulating your mind and getting regular exercise.

Why Water? The Mayo Clinic, the Arthritis Foundation, and the CDC all recommend aquatic exercise for people with chronic illness, mental health issues, and physical shortfalls. Water removes about 90 percent of body weight when submerged up to the neck, making aquatic exercise fully accessible to people with balance and strength deficits as well as those who are overweight. Because water supports the body, the risk of falling is eliminated from workouts, making the pool an accessible workout environment for people of all ages and abilities. Even if you’re a non-swimmer, you can still enjoy the benefits of water-jogging or shallow-water aerobics classes. Weight Loss, Strength, and Balance According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), broken bones and head injuries caused by falls are responsible for more than 700,000 hospitalizations per year among adults 65 and older. As a preventative measure, the CDC urges elderly people to perform strength and balance exercises to reduce the risk of falling. If you’re 65 or older, and you’ve been considering taking up a water exercise routine, you’re already doing yourself a favor. The measurable increases in balance, coordination, mental health, weight loss, and strength are just some of the reasons to incorporate aquatic workouts into your everyday life.
