It’s been a wet and windy week in Canowindra as the rain shows no sign of letting up. On Tuesday, the shortest day of the year, flood warnings were issued regarding the Belubula River from the SES, who stated that an average of 36 millimetres of rain had fallen during the past two days.

The rainfall caused river level rises in the Belubula at The Needles and Canowindra.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicted that the river would peak at 5 metres midday on Tuesday which caused moderate flooding. At that height, the soldier Settlement Bridge located 17kms west of Canowindra on the Gooloogong road was closed along with the Canowindra-Woodstock Road at Gallagher Lane and the Canowindra-Man-

durama Road at Cherry Tree Falls Bridge.

No flooding is currently anticipated in the town of Canowindra itself at the current height, however, low-lying river flats located along the Belubula have been inundated. Farmers and other landholders have been asked to move all pumps and other farm equipment, livestock, stock feed and chemicals to higher ground. The height of the Belubula River as of Tuesday at the gauge located on the John Grant Bridge was 4.75 metres. The SES would like to remind locals are to never drive, ride or walk through floodwater and to keep an eye on the updates. For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW SES on 132 500.

The Editor, It is disturbing that the Australian Electoral Commission, the media and politicians, all publish/stress, misleading information about voting rules at the forth coming July Election.

Firstly, there is no legal requirement that a minimum of 6 boxes must be serially marked on the Senate ballot paper above the line. To mark as few as one of the boxes will be counted as a formal vote. If marking none of these boxes, then 12 will be marked below the line.

Secondly, there is no legal requirement that people have to vote, it is not compulsory. What is compulsory is that, if your name is on the Electoral Roll then it must be marked off on the day. If such does not happen, then as it is law to do so, a ‘Please Explain Notice’ is usually received with a likely fine if the excuse given for not having your name marked off is unacceptable.

What appears to be a contradiction is that there is no legal requirement that everybody, 18+ years must have their name

on the roll, in fact, anyone can have their name removed from the roll, on request.

The ‘myth of compulsory voting’ is what forces people to vote in spite of their disinterest. Thus we end up with the debacles and political upheavals seen recently in the Senate.

The escape mechanisms used by some people are the ‘donkey vote’ or deliberately marking the paper informally. Both of these techniques comply and are supported by the attitude of “getting it over and done with” as quickly as possible, as the whole process becomes a personal inconvenience to them.

Catch of The Week: What a whopper!

This monster 92 cm cod was caught by Peter Watson at Wyangala Dam last Monday 13th June. Peter later released the fish back to his watery home. Other fish present in Wyangala Dam include Golden and Silver Perch, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Macquarie Perch, Carp and Catfish.

A hot tip when fishing for Golden and Silver Perch is to use bait and lures whereas if you’re going for a Murray Cod, head fishing in the spring or summer months. Catfish are usually taken from the bank with bait while trout are more common near the river arms around spawning season. Carp are probably the most abundant in the water and can be caught with yabbies, worms, cheese or corn.

Have You Reviewed Your Health Insurance?

Canowindra residents are being encouraged to assess their health insurance before the end of June. Recent research by iSelect has revealed that the majority of NSW residents with private health insurance took it out before the age of 31, suggesting many are motivated by potential tax savings or a desire to avoid paying higher premiums later in life.

Laura Crowden, spokesperson for iSelect, said that while younger people are more likely to nominate ‘to save on tax’ as a reason for having private health cover, 68% of insured NSW residents say they hold a policy to ‘protect their health’.

“While avoiding LHC or paying additional tax via the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is likely the reason younger customers initially choose to take out cover, most Australians say they keep it for peace of mind.”

But Laura warns against just taking out the cheapest policy to avoid paying extra tax, as they can end up costing a lot more in the long-run if the cover is insufficient.

“While budget policies are available for around the same cost as paying MLS ($900 for the full year), for a few hundred dollars more you could get a basic level of cover that helps you avoid extra tax and also cover you for over 20,000 different procedures listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule.”

“Canowindra residents shouldn’t simply take out private health insurance because somebody told you to or you think you need to save on tax. Instead, speak to an expert who can talk you through tax implications and match a policy to your individual or family’s needs, at a price you can afford.”

“These commercially-zoned freehold lots are for developers with a genuine commitment to the industry and its long-term prospects. This development is designed to help create new aviation related and employment-creating industries in our town,” Cr West said. Andrew Gee has been busy travelling around Calare this month and has a few announcements for residents. A number of bridges in the Calare electorate will be upgraded thanks to an investment by the Federal Government.

The Forest Road bridge at the East Fork in Orange has been granted $1.2 million with the NSW Government also kicking in an additional $1.2 million. The funding will allow the council to build an extra bridge on the eastern side of the existing structure, which will also include pedestrian access across the railway line.

Additionally, the Gundy Bridge on Renshaw McGirr Way in between Yeoval and Wellington will finally get a much needed makeover. This bridge has been a sore point for years now and people never thought it would be replaced. The Federal Government has allocated $620,000 with the NSW Government also to match that funding.

“It’s great to see this backlog of bridgework being cleared across Calare, which will better connect local and regional roads to state highways and key freight hubs. This is just one of the areas that federal, state and local governments can work together to achieve positive outcomes for regional NSW” Mr Gee said. “How wonderful to see that construction has also now commenced on the realignment of the Mitchell Highway at Guanna Hill between Orange and Molong. The $40 million project was 30 years in the making and it’s great to see that the Guanna is finally on the move!”

The introduction of Primary Ethics classes in public schools across Australia has provided a valuable alternative learning opportunity for students whose parents don’t wish to take Special Religious Education.

The other option is non-Special Religious Education, with some schools in the region offering Primary Ethics.

Taught solely by volunteers, the classes adhere to a strict curriculum that is split into four parts; Kindergarten (early stage 1), Years 1/2 (stage 1), Years 3/4 (stage 2) and Years 5/6 (stage 3). Parents and students who don’t wish to take Special Religious Education can choose between non-Special Religious Education or Primary Ethics when filling out the school application.

Ideas such as friendship are introduced in Kindergarten and are then extended over the next few years in topics focussing on courage, pride, boasting and greed. Students learn to recognise good and bad moral reasoning early on by introducing notions such as relevance and the difference between relevance and truth. Throughout the curriculum children are encouraged to provide reasons to support their arguments.

To teach Primary Ethics all volunteers must

complete police checks, working with children checks and attend a two-day course.

The lesson plans are based on a strict curriculum that is available online. Canowindra residents Nik Henry, Liz Mitchell and Margi Crowther completed their induction in September and have been teaching in the Cabonne region since then. “There’s a bit of confusion around the subject,” said Nik Henry; “Primary Ethics is not in competition nor is it a replacement for scripture. All it’s for it to provide an alternative to non-scripture. It’s not telling kids what’s right and wrong, it’s the kids themselves discussing it.”

“We’re always looking for volunteers” said Nik; “Margi, Liz and myself are happy to chat about any queries anyone may have.” For those interested in volunteering there is a blog for volunteers to post questions and step-by-step lesson plans online.

“The teaching process is very tight so the facilitators are not able to bring in their own personal beliefs of judgements, they’re left at the door,” said Nik; “So far it’s been well received and classes are getting bigger so it’s nice to know the option is being considered by parents.” For more information go to www.primaryethics.com.au

RURAL ROUNDUP

Men and women who worked in the shearing industry in the 1950s to 1970s are being called upon to share their stories for an exciting new performance work in the CowraCanowindra area.

As part of the SILOS Project a performance named The Shearers Ballet is being developed that celebrates the extraordinary work of the shearing industry. The creative team behind the project will be in the Cowra area next week Monday to Wednesday and will spend time talking to anyone once involved in the industry: shearer, wool classer, rouse about or cook. The only condition is that they need to be 65 or older.

Director Patrick Nolan, choreographer Alison Plevey and composer Scott Saunders are looking forward to working with retired shearers to create the performance.

The team are looking for people willing to spend an hour with them talking about things like: • What were the conditions like?

• What was involved in a day’s work?

• What time would you start / finish?

• How was a shearing shed managed?

• What were the different roles and how did they work together?

• What’s it like to shear a sheep?

• What sort of food did you eat?

• What do you think of the shearing industry today?

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Week ending: 16 June 2016 Prices bounced back this week, breaking the downward trend of recent weeks.The NRI gained 8 cents to finish at 1300cents/kg.

As with most recent offerings Stylish/ good spec wools recorded the highest gains but this week saw the average/ lower spec wools attract widespread buyer support to finish the week with solid gains. Gains were experienced across all micron ranges, with the fleece market closing generally 10/15 cents dearer when compared to last week’s close. Prices for Merino skirtings followed the lead of the fleece market making solid gains. Low vegetable matter lots (<2.0%) were highly sought after and in some cases prices were extreme. Merino cardings were the only poor performers for the week drifting marginally, to close the week 5/10 cents easier when compared to last week. Carbonising locks were most affected finishing 10/15 centscheaper.

Next week Fremantle has a one week recess which brings the national offering back down to a total of 24,000, the smallest offering in12 months.

Yet it’s important to keep your PC updated as programs we don’t even realise we have allow hackers to possibly get into our PC’s.

Recently there have been a lot of issues with “Adobe Flash” which if left unchecked can make your PC vulnerable. It is best to either update it or uninstall it completely – many websites will still work but maybe not show ads or play some games.

Flash used to be required for “YouTube” but they have changed their format. Many browsers such as Firefox and Chrome have Flash disabled. If you are unsure seek professional help as often it is harder to fix an intrusion than it is to prevent one. I know Antivirus (AV) solutions are often available for free but compared to a bought package they are somewhat limited. The average cost of an AV is $70.

Growing three great things to eat is the subject of this month’s Green Thumb. We are coming to the time of planting of asparagus and rhubarb and are just past planting time for garlic cloves, but it’s such a great crop to grow, maybe you can sneak a few into your vegie patch now and see how they go.

Rhubarb is not a crop I have grown a lot in the past, but a vigorous, productive rhubarb plant in my garden prompts me to suggest you consider planting some.

Crowns planted in winter will give you the quickest, productive crop. I favour the red stem varieties such as Victoria and Sylvian Giant. Crowns should be planted 8-10cm deep in the soil and at least three quarters a meter from other plants as they are vigorous growers that will return year after year. You can lift and divide the plant roots when they are dormant in winter, after a few years. Fertilize in late winter and water regularly in summer.

Asparagus is another crop that can be grown from crowns planted at this time of year. Plant the crowns about 30cm apart and about 2cm deep. Shoots will emerge in spring which can be harvested, but it is best to let the first season’s growth grow and become fern like shoots of up to 1m high. This will strengthen the crowns to give a stronger, more productive crop of harvestable asparagus spears next season and over many subsequent years.

Garlic has been an annual crop in my vegie patch for years. Divide the bulb into cloves and plant them 3cm deep and about 15cm apart in autumn to early winter.

They’re ready to harvest when the bulbs have fully developed and the leaves start to die back about Christmas time. I like the purple stripe variety but there is also one called Russian garlic that produces much bigger bulbs and cloves that are more mild flavour.

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service Van visited Canowindra on Tuesday and was greeted by a line-up of people wanting to donate blood, including the staff of Canowindra Tyre Service. Those who volunteered to come and donate were advised to drink three to four glasses of water or juice in the hours before and to eat a good sized breakfast. “We were in need of up to 20 appointments to ensure we met hospital demand and thanks to the great response from the Canowindra community we were able to meet that demand by the day’s end” said Ronny Maroun, Red Cross Commu-

MULTI-SPORT FACILITY FOR MOLONG

If the Liberals and Nationals are reelected in July, Molong has been promised $225,000 for a multi-sport facility.

This funding would see an outdoor multipurpose facility constructed, which would include four tennis courts, two netball courts, one full sized hockey field, and one full-sized soccer field on a synthetic turf.

Currently there is one overlapping grass sports ground providing for netball, tennis, hockey and soccer.

This facility will be of great social and economic benefit to the Molong community and its many sporting teams including the local hockey team, which travels to Manildra each week just to train.

“Sport is also a wonderful way for people to remain active and engaged with their local communities and I’m delighted that this funding will be directed to such a vital project for the Cabonne community” said Andrew Gee, Federal Candidate for Calare and Nationals Member.

PYTHONS CELEBRATE WIN AGAINST AGGIES

The Canowindra Pythons headed to Orange last Saturday to verse the Orange Aggies. Despite the grizzly weather the Pythons pulled into a comfortable lead at half time 17-10. The second half was a quieter

affair with a penalty by Jayden Brown being the only points added to the board, for a final score of Pythons 20 Aggies 10. Tries were scored by Jayden Brown, Todd Wyburn and Daniel Williams and Jayden also kicked a conversion. Three points went to Todd Wyburn, two points to Mitch White and one point to Jayden Brown and Scott Ellis. Players’ player went to Mitch White.

The boys will head to Grenfell on Saturday to try and defeat the Grenfell Panthers.

Last Saturday a semi-final of the major singles was played between Duncan and Vinnie. For the majority of the game the scores were close with the lead changing many times. After 27 ends the score was 22-20 in favour of Duncan. Then, unfortunately for Duncan, he dropped eight shots in consecutive ends giving the lead to Vinnie 28-22. Duncan was unable to bridge the gap, with Vinnie winning the game 3125. Best of luck Vinnie in the final against Brent Lees.

The District Senior Fours and the District Fours which were to have commenced on Monday 20th June have been postponed due to the wet weather. They will now be played on Monday 4th July through to Wednesday 6th July. Ladies do not forget the club’s Annual General Meeting is being held on Tuesday 28th June after bowls.

TIGRESSES

The Canowindra Tigresses headed to Grenfell’s Henry Lawson Oval on Sunday to brave the mud, wind and rain. Unfortunately, the girls were unable to beat the competition leaders with a final score of 280. Even though they didn’t come home the winners they had a great time diving, sliding and squelching their way through the entire 50 minutes, fantastic effort girls! The Canowindra Tigers major fundraiser this year will be held at the Royal Hotel on 30th July with a 1980’s theme, be sure to don your leotards and stock up on hairspray for a great night!
