Lions Celebrate 50 Years
On Saturday at the Bowling Club the Canowindra Lions Club marked a remarkable milestone, celebrating 50 years of servicing the community. Past and present members travelled from near and far to congregate together and enjoy dinner, drinks and a good catch up at the anniversary gala. “It was a really good roll-up and it was lovely so many people could come back after not seeing each other for a few years. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the meal was lovely” said Lions Secretary, Jan Jarrett. Over a hundred Lions members were present for the occasion, which was opened by President Darryl Fliedner, who has been President for three years running and has been a member of Lions for 34 years this June. “We were all young back when we

started but there’s not many young people coming in as many are focussed on their children, jobs or sports” says Jan; “If any young people are interested and would like to join they can contact myself on 6344 1301.” Other members who gave speeches on the night included district governor, Tony Smith, and Doug Nash, a 43-year member who talked about the bygone days of what Lions used to get up to. The Canowindra Lions Club mainly do voluntary work and last year clocked up 4000 voluntary hours, raising over $16,000. They are involved in local community events such as team penning, driver reviver, Meals on Wheels and the Canowindra Food Basket. Congratulations to all Lions members and here’s to 50 years more!

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT? FEDERAL ELECTION, SATURDAY 2 JULY
This year, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On election day, you’ll receive two ballot papers: • a green one for the House of Representatives • a large white one for the Senate On the green ballot paper you are voting for a candidate to represent your local area or electorate in the House of Representatives. On the white ballot paper you are voting for representatives of your state or territory in the Senate. Don’t worry if you make a mistake. Just ask for another ballot paper and start again.

Voting in the General Election… Hello, With reference to the letter from Mr Barwood in Issue 386, and while I do not hold myself out there as a constitutional lawyer, I would like to offer that in not marking six boxes above the line the vote may be classified as ‘informal’ and rejected. His points on whether one is registered to vote or not are thought provoking in that if anyone is a proud citizen then one should be prepared to contribute to the process. Of course, if you were to attend a polling place to ensure that you were not fined for absence, then why would you not submit a valid vote. Anything else is a waste of opportunity and opportunity in this fair land is what it’s all about, not ducking and diving and whinging about the imposition on your time and abrogation of your right to vote in the accepted manner. Regards, Bob Sherwood Perth, Western Australia

The Belubula River Alliance
Concerned environmental groups, under the banner of the Belubula River Alliance, are calling on Federal election candidates in Calare and Hume to respond to questions regarding a new dam on the Belubula River. The groups include the Inland Rivers Network, Save Cliefden Caves Association, Orange Speleological Society, Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange and the Australian Speleological Federation. The Belubula River Alliance have stated that it is essential that voters know the positions of candidates on the regional and national issue of protecting the Belubula River Valley and Cliefden Caves. Scientific research happening at Cliefden continues to demonstrate the unique value of the area, with recent results indicating a large presence of bats inhabiting the caves. The extent of downstream impacts is also a key concern, with the Belubula River forming part of the Lachlan River system, providing a vital water source for downstream irrigators and wetlands. The Belubula River Alliance will now put the following questions to candidates. Candidate’s responses to the below questions will be publicised as soon as they are received on behalf of this group: 1. What is your position on the proposed new dam on the Belubula River? 2. Are you concerned about the environmental and social condition of the Lachlan River system? 3. Do you believe a new dam on the river will affect the Lachlan River system? If so, will you oppose its construction? 4. If a dam is built, who do you believe should benefit and who should pay for its construction and maintenance? 5. Are you concerned about the potential impacts of a new dam on the Cliefden Caves and surrounding environments?

‘Who’s Eating Who?’ At The Age of Fishes
IMAGE: Jess Jennings and his dog paid a visit to Gaskill Street last week.
Jess Jennings, Working For You
Jess Jennings is the Labor Member for Calare and says he will ‘fight for our community’. Born in Bathurst, Dr Jennings is currently a local Councillor on Bathurst Regional Council and has run a local ag consulting business for fifteen years following on from his PHD in agriculture. “I’ve always had a strong interest in Federal politics since high school but have only been active the past 5 years” Dr Jennings said. Having built a house in Bathurst, moving into it in 2010, he ran as a candidate for Labor and was elected unopposed. From a local perspective Dr Jennings feels that a good proactive MP for Calare is needed. “Firstly we should deliver the agriculture food and fibre plan and secondly the region needs a renewable energy plan. We have an abundance of natural resources here in the Central West, why not use them? We want to establish a Tesla Gigafactory, similar to the one in Nevada, and would grow
the food strategy for the whole of the Central West. We also need to establish an internationally recognised brand so tourists can come to Australia, land in the Central West and work their way back to the big cities.” “Nationally, the big issues are the Gonski education package in which Calare schools would receive $20 million in additional funding for 2018-19. In rural towns such as Canowindra where resources can be tough to find for people with learning difficulties, this funding could help close the gap between city and country schools. Labor are also proposing a $3 billion childcare package for Jan 2017, with higher caps and better rebates. We would also make it a priority to protect Medicare from being privatised.” “Health and education are the key priorities for any parties wishing to represent country people” Dr Jennings concluded.
During the winter schools holidays in July kids can explore our local museum and some of their natural history free of charge. One child under 16 will be given free entry to the Age of Fishes Museum for each paying adult or senior in a group. Want to try something different these school holidays? Visit the Age of Fishes and get up close and personal with the New State Fossil emblem for NSW, Mandageria fairfaxi, a two metre long prehistoric predator (that could be your distant ancestor) which has only ever been found in Canowindra. Mandageria fairfaxi, along with the six other unique species found in the Devonian fossil record of Canowindra, form an intriguing 360-million-year old food web of prehistoric proportions. Can you gather information on all the species that were living locally 360 million years ago and solve the food web puzzle to receive a great prize? As an extra special treat all children visiting during this time will be offered half price membership to the Little Fossils Kids Club at the Age of Fishes Museum. They will receive membership for the rest of this year and first part of 2017 for half the regular price, now only $5. Club members will receive four jam packed newsletters each year filled with activities, games, competitions, prizes, giveaways and exclusive offers. So come on over to the Age of Fishes Museum, walk in the footsteps of David Attenborough, come face to face with 360-million-year-old fossils that inhabited the world long before the dinosaurs and discover what lies beneath your backyard.

For All Your Rural Needs
The Rural Centre is your local CRT rural service and supplier based in Manildra, Molong and Orange. Not only do they specialise in supplying all your rural merchandise needs, they also provide a range of technical services such as agronomic, animal health and stock and domestic water management. Current Issues... Stock grazing on winter forage crops may not be currently performing to their potential. Symptoms may include scouring, increased respiration, agitation, nasal and ocular discharge and lameness. There is often a poor balance of the nutrients stock require to ensure their digestive and metabolic systems function properly. This results in poor feed utilisation (wasted feed), poor growth and weight gain potential. Supplementation of stock with Grazemax Ultra loose mix has shown significant weight gain advantages and up to 65% less feed consumed per kilo of weight gain. With soil moisture profiles looking very promising, crop nitrogen requirements should be closely assessed to meet potential crop demands. Many factors will influence crop requirements such as paddock history, sowing nutrition, grazing, target yield and weed pressure to name a few. Ground-spread topdressing opportunities are a little difficult at the moment so it’s best to be prepared. Contact one of the Rural Centre’s agronomists to help with topdressing considerations. The Rural Centre have a highly skilled team to meet all your stock and domestic water needs and can provide design and installation of all your water requirements with recent strong demand for solar pumping systems. Currently primary producers are eligible for taxation concessions with immediate depreciation claimable with water management expenditure (check with your accountant). High Tea Celebrations For CWA The Canowindra CWA has a lot to be happy about this week following finalisations of much needed renovations to the CWA Hall’s kitchen on Blatchford Street. Members, generous donors, tradesmen and anyone else who fancied a cup of tea and a cake were invited to join the celebrations on Saturday. President of the Canowindra CWA, Bev Taylor, said; “It’s been very successful and we’d like to offer a big thank you to all the tradespeople who worked on the building.” The afternoon was officially started by Mr Len Nash, one of several people who made a generous donation to the kitchen renovation project, who marked the occasion by cutting a cake. “Members of the community are welcome to come and look at the resources and facilities on offer for them to hire for their own purposes. We’re hoping for lots of Christmas parties!” said Bev; “If anyone would like to inspect the facilities or have any questions please ask Jenny Middleton or myself. All in all, this was a lovely way to celebrate a bleak, wet winters day!” she concluded.

PYTHONS NEWS
Another wet and muddy Saturday set the scene for the match against the Grenfell Panthers at Grenfell. Both teams began the game by dropping a lot of ball which led to lots of muddy scrums on the pitch. The Py-

thons soon gained the upper hand thanks to Luke Watt and Jayden Brown’s kicking games which led to field possession and the Pythons were awarded the first try of the game with Adam Grant barging over the lines from five out. The end of the first half was Pythons 5 Grenfell 0. The second half began the same as the first. Despite efforts by the Panthers the Pythons line was impregnable. Midway through the second half Jack Grant picked up on a loose ball and ran forty metres to score the Pythons second try out wide, giving them a 10-0 lead which they continued to defend through the second half. The final score of the game was Pythons 10 Grenfell 0. The boys take on Cootamundra next weekend, kick off at 3.15 and high hopes for better weather! Three points went to Jack Knight, two point to Jayden Brown and one point went to Luke Watt and Ronnie Lawrence. Players’ player was awarded to Jack Knight. On the 6th July the Pythons will have a home game against Condo. On this day Ladies Day, Sponsors Day and Members Day are being combined to create one big event, so be sure not to miss it!
