Andrew Gee New Member for Calare

Andrew Gee has comfortably secured the seat of Calare following Saturday’s elections. Andrew said on ABC on Saturday night, after the seat was declared “I am very humbled by the strong vote of confidence and faith and I’ll be working to return that confidence as a strong advocate in Canberra. I’d like to think that was an endorsement of my work as a State Member.” Andrew pledged to represent “country people” in Canberra and said his first job as the new member for Calare will be to address the shortage of rural doctors by lobbying for action on the Murray Darling Medical School. Andrew was up against competition from Liberal Candidate Glen Davis, Sky Delanie Candidate for the Greens, Labor Candidate Jess Jennings and Rod Bloomfield of the Nick Xenophon Team. The aboriginal name for the Lachlan River, Calare came into existence in 1906 and has generally been a conservative seat. The recent redistribution of the elector-

ate has brought major changes to Calare, losing a third of the former seat’s area in Forbes and Parkes Shire to Riverina. Into the new electorate comes Wellington, Mudgee and Gulgong from Parkes, and Kandos and Rylstone from Hunter with the National Party margin declining from 16% to an estimated 15%. Mr Gee announced his resignation from State politics in May following five years representing the communities of the Central West in the NSW Legislative Assembly. Originally from Maitland, Mr Gee moved to Sydney to study Economics and Law at Sydney University. He then commenced practice as a solicitor and moved to Hong Kong where he set up a business with his brothers before returning home in 1999. He was called to the NSW Bar in 2003 and moved to Orange in 2005 where he ran a legal practice. Gee was the National MP for the State seat of Orange from 2011 to 2016.

I always enjoy Bob Sherwood’s letters. It would be easier if Bob checked the fine print as I did, of the Legislation which altered the whole voting procedure in the Senate, to determine who is right and who is wrong concerning voting above the line for the Senate. Bob, it must be great living in an ideal world in which everybody, altruistically, behaves in a manner which is the most desirable for mankind, as you appear to do, as far as voting is concerned in this instant. Regards, Bill Barwood Canowindra

SNIPPETS... Canon Jono’s locks were still safe…or so he thought. Hudson is a regular volunteer at the Canowindra Food Basket and upon telling his friends at the Food Basket team that he hadn’t reached his target, they managed to raise above target that morning. Therefore, the Reverend Canon’s hair will be no more. Reverend Jono’s hair will be shaved this Friday, 8th July at the Peace Memorial Uniting Church on Blatchford Street, Canowindra. Everyone is welcome to come and watch and donations will be gratefully received. Thank you to all who has supported Hudson in this worthy cause.

The awards ceremony will be held in Echuca on Saturday 23rd July. Good luck to all involved! World’s Greatest Shave: Reverend Canon Jono Williams has made an interesting agreement with his housemate, Hudson Jordan. Hudson has been busy raising funds for the World’s Greatest Shave, a hair-raising activity supporting research for leukaemia and cancer. Jono stated that if Hudson reached his fund raising target, he would also have his head shaved. By the time Hudson organised to say goodbye to his hair on Thursday 30th June, he had not achieved the target, so Reverend

On Thursday CWA ladies from Orange, Lyndhurst, Millthorpe, Cumnock, Bathurst, Borenore, Canowindra, Eugowra and Byng Emu Swamp congregated at the hall in Blatchford Street to enjoy the CWA Group International Day. This year, the focus was on Mongolia and the CWA have been studying everything from food and culture to the clothes and housing of this country throughout the year. Margaret Brown, Central Western Group International Officer, helped to organise the day. “We usually run competitions for school kids but this year we’re running them for the ladies themselves” she said; “Each group has also brought a Mongolian dish to taste and the ladies have been working like demons in the kitchen to get everything organised!” CWA members got stuck into making plasticine models of camels and horses, Mongolian inspired posters and miniature yurts (a style of house popular in Mongolia). Margaret oversaw the groups, shouting out helpful tips and keeping the craft makers in check. Mongolian memorabilia and artefacts were also placed around the hall, including a genuine Mongol wooden saddle with large metal stirrups. There was even a bottle of Mongolian vodka tucked away on a shelf! Once the artistic creations were finished they were displayed to the room who then voted on their favourites and the winners were awarded chocolate as a prize. Margaret drew the fun-filled day to a close by presenting a gift to Canowindra CWA President, Bev Taylor. “We’d like to say thank you to Canowindra for their wonderful hosting of today” she said.

Local Tyre Service Forges Ahead

We dropped in to see the team at Canowindra Tyre Service this week to see what they can offer to Canowindra locals and the surrounding areas. It’s been six months since owners Alison and Tom Stephens took over the business and they together with their team, Tahlia Pearce and Gavin Ratcliffe, are now well and truly settled into their roles. Combined the four bring extensive knowledge, skills and experience to the local tyre industry. As we arrived at the building it was hard not to notice the slick new look. Canowindra Tyre Service has a modern feel to it, with bright orange and navy décor and sharp branding emblazoning the front of the shop. Inside, there is an extensive range of Exide batteries and tyre brands such as BF Goodrich, Bridgestone, Mickey Thompson, Hankook and Kumho, with many brands available overnight. Accompanying the new look of the building is the look of the staff, who are all dressed in smart, professional uniforms. Services on offer include bike tubes and tyre repairs, motorbike tyre and tube repairs, passenger tyres, truck and trailer, 4x4 and all things agricultural. People are also welcome to drop in any day of the week for complementary tyre checks. “It’s a very friendly business environment,” said Alison and Tom; “We’ve had great sup-

port from the community. We’d also like to make everyone aware that we offer our callout service. If it’s a weekend, or late at night and you get a flat tyre in a paddock.” “We feel you shouldn’t have to pay for an out of town service. You can get quick and reliable service right here in Canowindra.” In the near future the team plan to hold agricultural information evenings with different suppliers. Canowindra Tyre Service want to offer great service to other businesses and farms in the area. “By offering a

good agricultural business service it keeps everything on the land running smoothly” said Alison and Tom; “We’re looking forward to continuing to build this relationship in the local and surrounding areas.” The team have just finished their most recent promotion, which saved customers $100’s on sets of tyres, and plan to have a new promotion every month so keep an eye out for future bargains on their Facebook page or pop into the shop.

Health Smart

Does Being Cold Show Some Ticker to Beat Stroke Bring On A Cold? Did your mother, grandmother, teacher or anyone ever say to you “Put on a jumper or you’ll catch a cold.” This has been the mantra throughout winters over time. Is it true? Is there any justification in the advice? And if so what do we need to do? We all know that winter is the coldest season of the year. In Ayurveda we also know that the qualities of winter are cold, heavy, thick, dense, wet, cloudy, stable and dark. Read through those words again. Doesn’t that feel just like where we are right now? Cold, certainly; heavy, the air is heavier, the blankets on the bed are heavier and I could certainly very easily get heavier; thick, dense and wet, look at all the runny noses and the mucousy coughs; cloudy and dark could easily describe our moods and our minds and stable when we don’t want to move from bed, the lounge or the heater!!! Since that is what winter is like, then to balance ourselves in winter we need to do the exact opposite and embrace all the opposite qualities - warm, light, thin, dry, mobile and clear. We can apply these qualities to our food, clothing, mental health, exercise – anything that is part of our life. Even our conversations and the people we hang out with. It can be more difficult to do the opposite because like attracts like, but when we do we will shift the scales and bring our bodies and minds back to balance. So does being cold bring on a cold – Yes! And what can you do to prevent it – simple – Ask yourself, “Is what I am doing warm, light, mobile, clear and dry?” The more you answer yes to this, the better you will feel on every level. May your winter be beautifully balanced and warm!! Love Robyn xx

Hundreds of thousands of Australians may be living with an undetected killer that is putting them at serious risk of stroke. Around 460,000 Aussies have atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat which can be fatal if left untreated. Shockingly, around 30 percent of those who have the condition don’t even know it. This week is Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Week, a global campaign to help shine the spotlight on this hidden condition. Atrial fibrillation is a particular type of irregular heartbeat. In a healthy heart, all four chambers beat at the same time, somewhere between 60 and 100 times per minute. If someone has an irregular heart, the left side of the heart (left atrium) beats rapidly and unpredictably and can beat irregularly at over 400 times per minute. If untreated, it can result in a high risk of stroke. As part of the awareness week, hearts4heart is joining with the Stroke Foundation in hosting free screening events around the country. Hearts4heart is a health promotion charity working to improve the diagnosis, treatment of quality of life for people affected by heart rhythm disorders. The Stroke Foundation is a not-forprofit organisation that aims to stop stroke by raising awareness, facilitating research and improving treatments. hearts4heart Chief Executive Officer, Tanya Hall, said if left untreated or poorly

managed, atrial fibrillation may lead to serious health complications, including stroke and heart disease. “Up to 30% of Australians with atrial fibrillation are undiagnosed, putting them at serious risk of stroke, heart disease and even death,” Tanya said; “The good news is atrial fibrillation can be managed but it needs to be detected first. Don’t let a stroke be the first sign of this condition.” “In partnership with the Stroke Foundation we are urging people to attend a screening event in their local area or visit their own health provider to get checked for atrial fibrillation. Put your health first by getting a simple, free, and fast check – 30 seconds could save your life,” she concluded. Throughout Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Week, events will be held at hospitals across Australia with free screenings that test heart rates, and provide education for people on atrial fibrillation. Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Sharon McGowan, said there needed to be more awareness of atrial fibrillation in the community. “Stroke is one of this country’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability” Sharon said; “More than 14,000 Australians will have a stroke caused by atrial fibrillation this year, which is why it is crucial we do more to detect and manage this dangerous condition.” For a list of free events visit www.hearts4heart.org.au

IN JULY

It’s Beginning To Taste A Lot Like Christmas

From the turkey to the sprouts, the mince pies to the party puddings, what better way to enjoy Christmas in July than by eating traditional, delicious food? Unfortunately thanks to our location on the world map, Christmas falls on one of the hottest months of the year, making a cold buffet more appealing than a hot, sit down dinner. So clever Canowindrian’s decided to have another Christmas in the much cooler month of July and enjoy all the trimmings that come with a nice, hot Christmas dinner. Staff at The Old Vic Inn are busy preparing to set out a festive feast for locals to enjoy. On Saturday 9th July and Saturday 30th July, you can enjoy a three course dinner for $45 per person in the beautifully decorated Old Vic dining room. To begin an entrée tasting plate or pork terrine, pate, stuffed mushrooms, local cheeses and homemade relish served with fresh sour dough bread. The main banquet dinner will be a roast turkey, maple glazed ham, buttered peas, honey and sesame carrots, roast potato and root vegetables, chestnut dressing and rich gravy before a dessert choice or Christmas pudding with brandy custard or individual pavlovas with homemade preserved cherries. Our mouths are watering already. Bookings are essential and group bookings of over ten people will be taken for any other day in July so give the Old Vic Inn a call on 6344 1009. Montrose House will also be rolling out the Christmas cuisine this July with two courses of sensational festive fare for $35 on 23rd July for Tommy’s special Yuletide Dinner. From 6.30pm, enjoy laughs, great company and beautiful, cosy surrounds as Tommy puts you at ease and ensures you have a wonderful night with wonderful food. To book, please call the Deli Lama on 6344 1006. So eat, drink and be merry!

Want To Be Part Of Canowindra Health Council? Canowindra Health Council is seeking interest from members of the community to join their local Health Council. Health Councils provide an opportunity for the community to work with Health Service Managers to identify the needs of their community and the services that are required. Over the past few years, members of the Health Council have participated in districtwide community forums to discuss health strategies and innovations that will benefit the community, met with the Western NSW Local Health District Board to discuss health matters relating to Canowindra and supported the men’s health night held last year. Health Council Chairperson, Gary Murphy, said the Health Council is committed to giving their community a voice on issues that affect the health and wellbeing of its people. “Our priorities for the next two years include raising community awareness of the health services we have available, keeping

the community informed of any changes in our health services and supporting health promotion events,” Gary said; “We’re keen to hear ideas from the community and to know what is working well for our health services and what can be improved.” Canowindra Health Service Manager, Janice Rumph is encouraging people from all walks of life to consider being a member on the Health Council. “You do not need to have health professional experience, in fact, not having a health background means you are able to bring a health consumer perspective to the role,” she said. At a minimum, membership requires attendance to monthly Health Council meetings, but there is also opportunity to participate in committees and workshops associated with your personal interest. For an application form or to find out more information, please contact the Canowindra Health Service Manager Janice Rumph on 6340 3033.

Farming Fun in Mudgee For almost 40 years, the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days have been putting people living on the land in touch with the latest information, best practices and hundreds of exhibitors. Small farms, hobby farms, tree changers and small family holdings have been a focus, as it is often these ‘new chums’ that need a ‘leg up’ in dealing with all those things that need doing on the land, be it fencing, rain water storage, choosing livestock, machinery and implements or a robot drone to go fetch the sheep. Equestrian activities have been growing in popularity at the event, reflecting how horses are increasingly the focus of many small, rural holdings. Come to the new display areas and enjoy talks from presenters such as Mark Langley and Merje Summi-

loff who will talk about horse starting and equine psychology. A healthy dose of retail therapy is provided, Fashion Parades run three times a day, and the Founders Pavilion is packed with gourmet treats, fashion exhibits, private schools, health and home wares to satisfy the neediest shopper. Events this year include three times a day fashion parades, displays from craftsmen such as Roy Davi the Leura bodger and a new permanent feature, the Festival of Yesteryear, a celebration of how things were done in the good old days. See you at the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days 15th & 16th July, for more information see www.mudgeefielddays.com.au

PROBATE: What Is It

Every week there seems to be a funeral announcement at the local IGA or Rice’s Newsagency which not only reminds us of our mortality but leads us to discuss Probate. I am often asked to explain what Probate is and there is good reason to know. It has something important to do with death and dying even though Elisabeth KublaRoss never mentioned it. Probate simply is a certificate granted by the Supreme Court confirming that a deceased person’s Will is valid and registered and that the executor has authority to administer the Will. So what is the big deal? It is a big deal if there are two or more Wills in people’s possession, or if a Will has not been validly executed, or if there are substantial assets in the estate. Once Probate has been granted it allows the executor to take the grant to persons who have assets of the estate such as banks or retirement villages and require them to transfer the assets or monies to the executor. There is no legal requirement that every estate or Will seek a grant of probate and not every estate requires one. If there is no Will don’t despair rather than apply for probate we can apply to the court for what is known as letter of administration. That is another topic but one worth discussing another day. If you need legal advice regarding a deceased estate, application for probate or estate planning contact Canowindra’s resident Lawyer Geoff Yeo at Peacockes Solicitors on 0448673924 or call into 35 Gaskill Street for clear and confidential advice.

Rosnay Wins Winestate National Award The third annual NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia) and Winestate organic wine judging took place recently and local owner of Rosnay Organic Wines, Sam Statham, took top prize, the NASAA Ltd Certified Organic ‘Wine of the Year’ Australia 2016 award. Wine is classified as organic when the wine has been made from grapes that are grown without the use of any ‘artificial chemicals’ such as systemic fungicides, herbicides and synthetic fertilisers. Rosnay was the first organic and biodynamic vineyard of the Cowra wine region, planted by the Statham family as part of a unique certified organic rural farming subdivision, now known as Rivers Road Organic Farms. Sam and his family are dedicated to the principles of organics and sustainable living and are proving that organic wines can hold their own in the wine world. They established the property in 1997, naming it after a maternal French ancestor Alberic Dulong de Rosnay, a Beaujolais vigneron. It is a diverse family farm enterprise, which spans production, processing and tourism. “Rosnay, the farm and the idea, encompasses all of my passions; family, eco-living, community, self-reliance, cooperation, natural farming systems, and an almost spiritual - call it biodynamic - connection with this place,” Sam said; “My first knowl-

edge of wine I gained in France in 1995 as a result of my Mum, Florence, being French, so I did university in southern France and studied Geography. Part of that course was a subject called ‘Terroir’ - a word I’d never heard in Australia. But in France it’s in the blood. My field assignment was to visit a vineyard, and I had to do a visual report of the interactions of soil, hydrology, climate, microclimate, native vegetation, grape varieties and cultural methods – that result in a site’s unique flavours. I also heard reference to a mentor I never met, Emile Peynaud, whose book, ‘Knowing and Making Wine’, is my wine making bible today.” Winemaking for Sam began late, after 15 years of growing organic grapes, olives and other crops with his parents. In 2012 he won a trip back to France from the NSW Department of Agriculture, the Inaugural NSW Organic Pioneers Award. It was in this second visit that he decided to stop just ‘hanging out’ with winemakers, but to actually have a go. “The next vintage, inspired by the organic wines of southern France, and with Peynaud’s book in hand, I made my first wine and called it Garage Wine Number 1. Two tonnes of Cabernet Sauvignon, handpicked with friends and then a complex process of trial and error over a month, with hand plunging twice daily and then to further lengthy malolactic fermentation. CANOWINDRA SPORT PYTHONS GO DOWN TO COOTA

On Saturday the Canowindra Pythons hosted Cootamundra for the first time. Not sure what to expect from the visitors, the opening whistle had the Pythons defending strongly but they soon realised that Cootamundra were an experienced team and this was going to be a tough game. Cootamundra were the first to score a try with a strong run from the inside centre close to the line. Todd Wyburn then scored a try for the Pythons, making it 7 all. However, Cootamundra reacted with two more tries before the Pythons managed to get one back, meaning they were still one try behind at half time. During the second half Cootamundra continued to dominate the game, running in three more tries with Canowindra scoring a consolation try from Todd Wyburn. The final score of the game 42 Cootamundra 17 Pythons. Good games were had by Luke Watt at the back, constant in defence and attack as always and Dean Schaefer played well in the forwards. Three points went to Todd Wyburn, two points to Luke Watt, one point to Dean Schaefer. Players player went to Todd Wyburn. Next week the boys travel to Temora which will be another tough game so be sure to show your support. The 16th July is a home game against Condo for the Pythons and is also the ladies, sponsors and members’ day. The theme of the day is ‘flower power’ so whether it’s a daisy headband, a floral dress or a cheeky rose in the lapel of a suit, get donned in flowers and enjoy a great day for all the family.

MEN’S BOWLS

Last Saturday the Major Pairs final was played with Sparky and Duncan against

Brent Lees and Dool. The first part of the game was a close affair, with the scores after ten ends being 11-10 in favour of Sparky and Duncan. Then the wheels fell off for Sparky and Duncan, who went down six shots in the next end. From then on Brent and Dool took control of the game to win 29-13. Saturday 9th July is the O’Brien Cup: N Delaney and M Lawrence vs K Walker and R Brooks. P Kennedy and S Fisher vs C Webb and J Preston. S Kirkman and I Nelder vs B and T Bates. Sunday 10th July is the Consistency Singles: M Lawrence vs I Nelder, Marker K Perry. J Preston vs B Webb, Marker K Fisher. WOMEN’S BOWLS

No bowls played on Tuesday 5th July due to the weather and wet greens. Margaret Gosper competed in the Championship of Championship Singles Bowls played at Oak Flats last week. Margaret was beaten in the 3rd round by Karen Moran of Cabramatta. Margaret enjoyed her time in Oak flats and was accompanied by Heather Hoad. On Monday 4th July the District Senior Fours 1st round was played; Libby Balcombe, Nancy Morrow, Margaret Gosper and Heather Hoad defeated Moyna Rue, Joice McNaught, Jill Messenger and Deanna Noble and in the final Ivy Fogg’s team from Cowra defeated Heather’s team. Congratulations to Ivy Fogg’s team, the District Senior Fours Champions for 2016, which makes Heather’s team the runnerup’s for 2016. Only 3 teams entered the

competition. Canowindra’s District fours teams were beaten on the Monday morning, except for Gwen Haydon’s team who won in the morning but were beaten by a Cowra team in the afternoon.
