Super Sally
Local lady Sally Wallace is currently in training for the World Triathlon Championships. The event, which will be held on an island off the coast of Mexico in September, has a World Age Group category of 65-69 which Sally will be competing in. It all began when Sally came back from a bike ride in Vietnam and took up running in 2013. She decided to try a triathlon after being prompted by her sons. This year alone Sally entered four races that were qualifiers for her age group and won three of them. “It’s great cause there’s not much competition!” said Sally, who is balancing training between a full time job. “It’s addictive, once you start doing a bit of training you get restless if you’re not doing something.” Sally is supported by Barnyard coach Dan Benton and the Cowra Tri Club, who

have two other members also heading to Mexico. There is, however, one catch to competing at the World Triathlon Championships, Sally has to pay for everything other than a shirt and shorts which are supplied. “It’s going to cost around $10,000 to get there, pay for bike shipment, doctors examination and everything else. Nick Jacobs and Rob Rogan kindly set up a GoFundMe page to help with the costs. I’m funding most of it but any help along the way would be greatly appreciated.” Sally will complete a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run. When asked about her training, Sally said; “It’s all trial and error as this is new ground for me. Those that get up and give it a go will achieve.” To help Sally get to Mexico, you can donate on www.gofundme.com/27srxss

Canowindra Post Office
In 1847, pound keeper Japhet White was Canowindra’s first postmaster when an unofficial office opened in the store next to the inn, now marked by the monument in South Canowindra. Mails for Canowindra were conveyed between Bathurst and Carcoar by horseback weekly and increased to three times weekly in 1861. Canowindra’s office remained south of the river with storekeepers or publicans as postmasters until 1864, when John Pearce was appointed from 1st March 1864 in his store north of the river. This was Canowindra’s first brick building built c. 1861 by James Collits, the site of later Rural Bank building. John Flanagan, postmaster from 18691871, had his office on the site of today’s post office in a small room adjoining the first weatherboard Victoria Hotel where he was the publican. The post office moved to yet another site, Edward Plunkett’s store, on the corner of Gaskill and Tilga Streets from 1871-1874. From 1874 to 1877, the office was back to the brick store, now Camfield Baker’s, returning briefly to the Victoria Hotel site where Thomas Clyburn was postmaster from 1877 to 1878 until succeeded by TJ Finn, postmaster in the brick shop until 1882. Meanwhile, from 1881, a telegraph office was opened in the building near Clyburns’ Victoria Hotel with Frederick Burgess as telegraph officer. On 1st March 1882, Frederick Burgess was appointed Canowindra’s first official postmaster when the office was combined with the telegraph office. A H Costin succeeded Burgess on 6th September 1884 followed fifteen years later by G Peek on 22nd December 1899.
After years of debate about the best site for a new purpose built post office, the wooden buildings rented from the Victoria Hotel were bought by the PMG and demolished c. 1905 for a new brick office, telephone exchange, telegraph office and residence.

New Look for Reverend Canon Jono: Reverend Canon Jono Williams is sporting a streamlined look following an agreement with his housemate, Hudson Jordon. Hudson has been busy raising funds for the World’s Greatest Shave, which supports research for leukaemia and cancer. Hudson met his fund raising target last week thanks to members of the Food Basket, so Reverend Canon Jono also had his head shaved on Friday at the Peace Memorial Uniting Church. Thank you to all who supported this worthy cause! War Stories: 19th July 2016 is the centenary of the battle of Fromelles, the first action of Australian troops on the Western Front in WWI. It is the biggest loss of life of Australians in any one day, in our history. How did this happen? What went wrong? Who were the local men involved? In recent years, a mass grave of many of these Australians has been discovered, DNA testing carried out, and re-burial, including a local man. Canowindra Historical Society is commemorating this anniversary with a presentation by local historians, discussing both the ‘big picture’ of the Western Front, and the ‘local stories’, and invite all members of the community to attend their ‘History in the Club; Telling our War Stories’
event on Friday 22nd July from 2pm at the RSL Hall. $5 donation is appreciated. Creative Canowindra: The Canowindra Creative Centre recently held an Acrylic Painting Workshop led by Sue Hodge. The day was attended by 5 budding landscape artists. Plans of future art classes and workshops are already underway, so watch this space. If you’d like more information please contact Deb on 6344 2490 or debrutter@bigpond.com Greyhound Racing Banned in NSW: From July 2017 greyhound racing will be banned in our state, following Premier Mike Baird’s announcement, saying the “widespread and systemic mistreatment of animals” cannot be tolerated. NSW is the first state in Australia to ban the sport following reports that between 48,000 to 68,000 dogs were killed in the past 12 years for being too slow or otherwise unsuitable for racing. Are you a greyhound owner or trainer? How do you feel about the ban? Send your thoughts to editor@ canowindraphoenix.com.au Happy Birthday! Lee Webb celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday at Montrose House. She enjoyed a delicious dinner cooked by Tommy Jeffs surrounded with friends and family. Lee celebrated her actual birthday on 12th July, we wish you all the best Lee!

PJL Parkes Open For Business!
PJL have recently purchased Parkes Heavy Mechanical Repairs, allowing them the opportunity to expand their capabilities and become a major shutdown supplier, infrastructure maintenance and construction service provider throughout NSW. Heading up the Parkes operation is Canowindra local, Clayton Maynard, who brings with him industry specific and managerial experience. Keen for the challenge, Clayton has worked with PJL for 7 years, previously managing PJL’s Engineering facility in Orange. The existing operation in Parkes has been co-ordinating and running shutdowns for a number of years with various clients in the local area. This required a particularly unique skillset within management and trade based staff, therefore 90% of the existing Parkes Heavy Mechanical Repairs employees accepted roles under the new PJL business management. “With the majority of the existing employees coming over to PJL, we hope to integrate these skills and processes throughout our other operations.” Clayton said. PJL’s existing operations and experience within them will also complement the Parkes business model and enable the group to offer a more specialised service to clients in this area. “This, combined with PJL’s scale, in house qualified engineers and internationally accredited operating systems will assist local clients with upcoming projects as well as planned maintenance events”. Clayton explained. PJL currently have a contract in place to supply shutdown services, scaffolding and poly welding to CMOC at Northparkes Mines, which is not something any of the other operations specialise in. “Engineering opportunities into solutions is something PJL has seen great success with since its inception back in 2006, and it is something that will take us forward into the future” Clayton went on to say. “We are excited to now be a part of the Parkes community.”

40 Years As A CPA
David Bigg has reason to celebrate this week following being recognised as a Certified Practising Accountant for 40 years. David has been awarded a 40 year membership pin from CPA Australia in acknowledgement of this achievement. This impressive milestone is one David should be congratulated upon. CPA Australia is an accounting body which was founded in Australia in 1886 and has over 150,000 members, 115,000 of them located in Australia and 35,000 based in Asia. In 1978 David returned to Canowindra to commence his accountancy business in partnership with his father, the late Roland Bigg. In 1982 David began operating as a sole trader after his father passed away and in May 1996 the practice was incorporated. His practice by client choice is the registered office for the 20 plus Pty Limited companies incorporated throughout the ASIC.
Ever since returning to Canowindra, David has done voluntary accountancy work over the years for the local squash and junior rugby league clubs, for community service clubs such as Rotary, Lions, CWA and the local Anglican Church. In addition, in his earlier years in his practice he also worked with the local Apex Clubs, the RSL, the beautification committee, the Chamber of Commerce and other similar groups. When David has some spare time he can been seen cycling on his bike, and manages to ride over 50 kilometres each week, he also rides in the 70 km annual Blayney to Bathurst challenge. He plays squash once per week and attends monthly meetings of the CWAS (Central West Astronomical Society) and the ‘Dish’ Parkes Radio Telescope annual weekend Astrofest at Parkes. Congratulations David! By Cheryl Newsom

Beat The Winter Blues Do you feel more dispirited when the weather is cold and gloomy or over the winter months when the nights get longer? Around one in four of us can feel more sluggish and tired during winter, with some people even suffering the more severe seasonal affective disorder, or SAD (a very apt acronym), which is usually diagnosed after two years of intense symptoms in which the person becomes extremely depressed over the colder months. There’s nothing you can do to change the weather, but you can try and keep your spirits up until spring. Feel Good Food There are lots of foods that are linked to enhance your mood, with one of our favourites being dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is high in tryptophan, an amino acid that serves as a precursor for serotonin which can help your body regulate appetite, sleep patterns and mood. Other foods high in this amino acid include fish, nuts and vegetables such as broccoli. Eating a healthy, wholefood diet over winter can make all the difference between feeling sluggish and curling up on the couch and feeling energised. It’s simple, eat healthy, feel better! Clean Up Don’t wait for spring to have a big clear out, de-clutter your house and maybe treat yourself to something new while you’re at it. Letting go of things you don’t need can make you feel much more positive mentally. Be Kind To yourself and others. At the heart of successful and happy people is a strong sense of self-worth. Meditation can sound pretentious, but all it essentially is, is taking time out for yourself to breathe deeply and relax, which is something we should all make time for. Say at least one kind thing to yourself every day, don’t sell yourself short! Look in the mirror and say, ‘hey hot stuff, you have a wonderful day today’ go on, we dare you. You’ll soon be feeling in top form the whole year round!

Dylan Has Sights Set On State
Canowindra is proving yet again that the town produces outstanding sports stars as 11-year-old Dylan Slattery prepares for a three-day carnival in Mudgee, where he will aim for selection in the NSW primary rugby union squad. What makes this even more impressive is that this is only Dylan’s first year playing rugby union. Dylan attended regional trials in Orange earlier this year and was selected to represent the Eastern Division team for Western Area. Players selected from the Eastern and Western Divisional trials then participated in the Western Area trial at Wellington in March. Dylan played hard and was successful in making the Western Area Rugby Squad. Selection in this squad has required a huge commitment by both Dylan and his family as they travel regularly to attend training in Wellington and trial matches in Dubbo and Orange. The team won their first trial against Dubbo Roos and are preparing for a match against Orange City on 24th July. The final trial will be against Kinross in Orange on 14th August. Their final training session will be held in Mudgee on Monday, 22nd August, before the three-day carnival kicks off. Dylan will play teams from right across NSW and will be considered throughout the carnival by a group of selectors looking for the State’s best Rugby Union players. Success here would place Dylan in the NSW State Squad. The Canowindra Pythons have shown great support for Dylan and have sought donations from many local businesses for a monster raffle. Tickets for the raffle will be sold outside the IGA on Friday, with the winner announced at the rugby union Clubhouse on Saturday in conjunction with Ladies Day. Proceeds from the raffle will go towards the costs of uniforms, accommodation and other expenses for Dylan.

GUTSY EFFORT FROM PYTHONS
Canowindra travelled down to Temora on Saturday with ten on the bus and an unknown amount of drivers. In the end fifteen players were there to start the game. The Pythons started with a vigour not seen this season so far, throwing the ball around a lot, going back to the game plan that got them to the final last year.
