Floral Fun At Ladies Day

This Saturday was the annual Canowindra Pythons Ladies, Sponsors and Members day. Hundreds flocked to the Oval for the event, which had the theme of ‘flower power’. The large crowd gathered on the pitch side-lines to cheer on the Pythons as they took on Condobolin. The support must have spurred the boys on as they put on their best performance this season so far. The Pythons started slowly with Condo first to score but as the boys settled into the game the tries came thick and fast, leading to a final result of 54-5 to the Pythons. Try scorers included Jayden Brown, Nick Wilson, Craig McKenzie and Kenny Turnbull. At presentations three points were awarded to Mitch White, two points went to Jayden Brown and one

point to Todd Wyburn and Craig McKenzie. Players’ player went to Mitch White and Jayden Brown. Off the field people were busy selling raffle tickets to raise money for local sports star Dylan Slattery and the Canowindra netball team, the Pythonettes. Just under $300 was raised for the Pythonettie girls, which will go towards kits and some new equipment. A signed Pythons ball was also won by Lachlan Rice for winning the ‘Guess How Many Jellybeans’ game and the best dressed of the evening went to Emma Beck and Craig McKenzie, who wowed in their colourful 70’s inspired outfits. Thank you to all who worked hard to make the day a success, donated prizes and attended the event!

Canowindra Phoenix Celebrates 400 Issues

As the only free local weekly paper in Canowindra and surrounds it is certainly a milestone to be able to celebrate our 400th issue. Since taking over the Phoenix in November 2013 we have certainly evolved, a definite sign of that was being recognised with the runner up trophy as Business of the Year in Cabonne for the Daroo Awards. We have grown in size and distribution now printing 1,300 copies each week, and with the paper available both on our Facebook page and on our website, there is no-one in the community who cannot access our publication. We are the local ‘go to’ paper, with details of everything that is happening in and around Canowindra and district, updates and photos of local events, farming updates and much more. We also get involved at a sponsorship level with local sporting teams and this year

have sponsored the Canowindra Pythons and the Canowindra Walla Rugby, and in the past many other worthy causes. One of the highlights of each year is our International Women’s Day luncheon where a considerable amount of money is raised for a charity of note. We also support many local associations including the P&H Society Annual Show and the Balloon Challenge. Of course none of this would be possible without the wonderful staff who work at the Phoenix, not only in Canowindra, but also in Forbes, Parkes and Hilltops. They are to be congratulated, as well as our loyal business supporters and of course our readers, who come from all parts of Australia. Without all of you, these weekly papers would not be possible. I thank you all. Cheryl Newsom Publisher

Probus Ladies Club lunch a success: Canowindra played host to the Orange Probus Ladies Club on Thursday, with the club using Tommy Jeffs’ services at Montrose House for its Christmas in July luncheon. A busload of 40 women travelled from Orange to Montrose House, and Tommy Jeffs had them arrive an hour early so they could spend some time checking out other Canowindra businesses before lunch was served. They also had the chance to look at the Christmas in July decorations that are on display. Tickets still available for Christmas in July dinner: Tommy Jeffs is encouraging the people of Canowindra to purchase tickets for the Christmas in July function being held at Montrose House on 23 July. To secure your place phone Tommy at Deli Lama on 6344 1006. Are you happy that our children have gone back to school for term three?

Daffodil Day: It’s that time of year again – Daffodil Day, a national day of hope, which will take place on Friday, 26 August this year. The Cancer Council is encouraging the community to wear a daffodil pin to show support for someone they know who has been affected by cancer. This year marks 30 years of Daffodil Day in NSW. Congratulations to Mrs Kathryn O’Ryan who was the winner of the Canowindra Creative Centre raffle. The prize was a $50 Open Order in Canowindra. School zones back in force as term 3 begins: Term 3 began this week across all schools in NSW, and this means that all school zones are now back in force. School zones are affective on Monday to Friday (except for public holidays) from 8am to 9:30am, and again from 2:30pm to 4pm. The 40km/h school zone speed limit must be adhered to even if school children are not visible.

Tommy Jeffs: No, I’m not happy at all. Businesses in Canowindra thrive during the school holidays, but when school goes back, you could fire a gun.

Dianne Delaney: I’m very glad to see my daughter go back to school. It allows her to receive a good education and frees up some of my time too.

Christmas In July Monster Market A Huge Success Canowindra Services and Citizens Club Office Manager Julie Fliedner says last Friday night’s Christmas in July Monster Market was the busiest night the club had had all year, with around $7500 worth of prizes being given away. The top prize was a holiday voucher valued at $2000, which was won by Rachel Huntley, and there were many other prizes up for grabs, including kids toys. It was the first time the club had run a Monster Market for Christmas in July, and it was such a big success Julie said it would be run again. The promotion ran for six weeks, with winners of each Friday’s meat raffle going into the draw. By Joshua Matic

Makayla Delaney: I’m not happy at all. I understand school is very important, but I don’t really like the subjects that I’m doing at the moment.

something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue Six Ways To Throw The Best Wedding Ever Ultimately, your wedding day is about celebrating the love between you and the person you’re about to marry. But there’s another goal at hand: throwing one seriously epic party that your guests will talk about for years to come. But how do you make your big day stand out amongst the throngs of weddings your family and friends have attended in the past? While there are many ways to upgrade the standard nuptials, we made a list of easy ways you can get the party started right. To start, think about the wedding experience as a whole. Sure, your nearest and dearest are elated to watch you marry your longtime love, but sitting for an hour-long ceremony is not their idea of a celebration. Remember that many of your guests have travelled to spend time with you, not watching you, so ensure the evening is interactive. This way they’ll feel like an important part of the proceedings. And while the night should certainly cater towards your preferences, think about the total experience for your guests, too. You may love soft jazz music, but that won’t fill your dance floor, so consider those tunes for cocktail hour and have your DJ amp up the playlist after dinner.

1. Keep Your Ceremony Brief Don’t get us wrong, your friends and family are present at your big day to see you get married — but no one wants to watch a drawn out ceremony. Keep the actual proceedings (not including entrances and exits) around 20 minutes so you won’t lose anyone’s attention. 2. Choose a Personalised Program While we’re on the topic of the ceremony, don’t forget about creating a wedding program. By personalising this piece of stationery with interesting details about you and your partner, a breakdown of the ceremony’s proceedings, and any important information they should know (like a translation of traditional vows or that you’d prefer photos aren’t taken) you’ll capture their attention and get all of those key details across. Plus, it will keep them busy if the event

Centenary Of The Battle Of Fromelles Canowindra Historical Society invites all to attend its next History in the Club event. The Battle of Fromelles has a special place in these centenary years of commemoration of World War 1. It was the first battle on the Western Front in France, which saw Australian troops in action, and has the sad distinction of being the occasion of the greatest loss of Australian lives on any single day in our history. How did this happen? What went wrong? In recent years, the discovery of mass graves of Australian soldiers who died in this battle has also had a profound impact on many Australians, not just the relatives of these hitherto missing soldiers. The story behind this discovery is itself fascinating and instructive. The presentation will include the stories of seven known local men who fought and/

or died in this battle on 19 July 1916: Clarrie Nash, Keith (Barney) Davis, Harold Whitmee, Horace Balcomb and Jim Jones from the Cranbury district, Albert Williamson from Nyrang Creek and Peter Thompson from Billimari. Their letters from the front are poignant and moving, giving flesh to the bones of the official histories. Lunch is available beforehand in the Services Club Dining Room from 12 noon. For lunch bookings contact the Club. Tel: 63441397 A $5 donation is required. The main event will be in the RSL Hall at the Services Club. For further information contact Historical Society members; Ross Cleary 0410 447 950, Jan Harrison 6364 0258 or Dorothy Balcomb 6360 0618. IMAGE: Poppies in front of memorial at Fromelles

something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue runs a little late. 3. Use a Wedding App or Hashtag There are many great wedding apps to choose from for your big day. Some interactive apps allow guests to upload wedding photos into one curated place, while others keep your friends and family up on any wedding-related news. Want something even easier? Create a clever hashtag and ask guests to tag all of their photos using it. 4. Give Out-of-Town Guests a Welcome Basket Whether you’re hosting a destination wed-

ding or a hometown bash, some of your guests had to travel to be a part of your big day. To show your appreciation, give welcome bags for guests staying at hotels. Include a few snacks, bottles of water, and a list of local resources, like the nearest pharmacy, restaurants and coffee shops, plus any nearby attractions. If you’re able to splurge, throw in a bottle of wine, tasty local treats like an artisan cheese or chocolate, and a guidebook. 5. Greet Each Guest It may sound obvious, but it’s important to personally greet each and every guest

at your wedding. Once the celebration is underway do your best to spend time with each person — whether that means chatting over a cocktail, visiting their table at dinner, or letting loose on the dance floor. 6. Create a Well-Planned Seating Chart It doesn’t matter if your reception dinner will be a buffet, plated meal, or family-style servings: A smart seating chart is vital to ensuring your guests have a good time. Try to group people together with similar backgrounds and interests, so they’ll have something to talk about even if they’ve never met before.

Services Club Launches NRL Promotion

IMAGE: One of local greyhound trainer David Grant’s greyhounds, Cheeky Grant. Photo: Supplied.

Local Owner Labels Greyhound Decision As “Knee-Jerk”

Former greyhound trainer and current greyhound owner John McAlister says the NSW Government made a “knee-jerk” reaction by shutting down the greyhound racing indus-try, but admitted the sport should have been heavily policed. Premier Mike Baird announced on July 6 that greyhound racing would be banned in NSW from July 1 next year, after a State Government inquiry found evidence of severe animal mistreatment, including the practice of live baiting, and up to 68,000 dogs being killed in the last 12 years due to being too slow or unfit to race. The inquiry also stated it could not see a way for the industry to re-form in the short to medium term. But Mr McAlister said putting a complete stop to the industry would cost thousands of people their jobs and livelihoods when this did not have to happen. “There is no need to just shut the industry down, but it should have been policed about 20 years ago at least,” he said.

“Measures should have been put in place a long time ago to ensure that dogs were not being mistreated, but micro-chipping in dogs was only brought in three years ago, which is just ridiculous.” Mr McAlister said a better way to stop animal cruelty in the industry would be to invest more in dog adoption and animal welfare to enable industry reform. Canowindra based greyhound trainer David has been involved in the sport for 3-4 years, and said many involved in the sport will lose significant financial investments. “It is an investment and as this decision has been made after only a few years in the game for some people, so there hasn’t been a chance for any returns to be realised,” he said. Mr Grant said he has always found a new home for dogs no longer able to race, instead of putting them down. “We have never had to put a dog down,” he said. By Joshua Matic

The Canowindra Services and Citizens Club will be launching a special promotion this Friday, with tickets and accommodation for the National Rugby League’s grand final up for grabs. The promotion will be running for the next six Friday’s, and will run in conjunction with the normal Friday meat raffles held at the club. While the meat raffles are open to all members of the public, the NRL promotion will only be open to members, and the Club is strongly encouraging locals to get membership so they can be a part of this huge giveaway. Two lucky members will be drawn each Friday and enter a separate draw of 12 finalists after six weeks, with the overall winner to be drawn from that. The two winners from each week in the lead up will be drawn from the meat raffle draw, where the members have recorded their details on the ticket and placed it in the draw. The prize includes four tickets to this year’s NRL grand final at Sydney Olympic Park’s ANZ Stadium, and also includes a $400 accommodation voucher. The total value of the prize is $1200. Club Office Manager Julie Fliedner said the promotion was aimed at getting locals down to the club and socialise with fellow residents of Canowindra. “We’re really hoping to increase our membership at the club and allow people to enjoy the facilities that we have here in Canowindra,” she said. “Make sure you come down and get your membership so you can be a part of this fantastic promotion. The winner will be drawn on August 26. By Joshua Matic

A Reminder To Keep Those Decorations Coming

Businesses in Canowindra are being urged to continue showing their impressive Christmas decorations in their shop’s windows on Gaskill Street, with just two weeks left in the Christmas in July competition. The Canowindra Phoenix is running the competition, and a strong panel of local judges has been put together to judge the decorations of each business that decorates its front window. The competition will run until the end of Sunday July 31, and the prize for the bestdressed shop will be a one-night getaway for two people at the famous Fairmont Resort in Leura, in the Blue Mountains. Canowindra Phoenix Sales Manager Roselea Buttigieg said the competition was designed to get businesses to be festive in the middle of the year. “It’s a great way of creating some excitement in Canowindra and bringing more people into the town centre as a result,” she said. “It also makes the town centre look more pretty and decorative, and it’s very easy to

enter the competition. There is no paperwork involved; all businesses need to do is get decorating and put themselves on show!” “Everyone is invited to get creative and dress up their windows, and the best dressed window will receive a night away for two people in the beautiful Blue Mountains!” Neryle Smurthwaite, Canowindra High School Principal, Sharon Hawker, Canowindra Public School Princiapl, and Ken McNamara, Principal of St Edwards Catholic School, will be the three judges of the competition. Canowindra Newsagency owners Debbie Rice and Graham Rice won last year’s competition, and have entered again this year with another impressive display in their front window. A high number of other businesses on Gaskill Street have also been busy decorating, so if you haven’t yet, make sure you do! By Joshua Matic

OUR Bloke Brought to you by Blowes CLothing...Helping Blokes Look Good in Orange, Mudgee, Bathurst & Dubbo

Eddy Wilkinson

How long have you lived in Canowindra?
I bought my house in 2005, but moved full time to Canowindra in 2010, so I have lived here for about six years. Where do you work?
Conni and I have run our own business, which is called Synercon. We have done this for nearly 18 years. What do you like to do in your spare time?
What spare time?! Our business, the local Business Chamber and the Pythons Rugby Club consume a fair bit! Do you have a motto you try to live by?
“If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing NOW!” What makes you laugh?
Lots! I love a good laugh, and there’s irony in almost everything. Whats your worst habit?
My worst habit would be saying “yes” before thinking about it!

How do you like your coffee?
I like having a cappuccino in the morning, and a black coffee with a dash of something at night. If you could go anywhere in world where would it be and why?
Everywhere! I have never tired of travel. The world, including home, is full of surprises.

Hello readers and welcome to this month’s column from Montrose House. We started our month with the wedding of the delightful Peter and Pam Benheim on Saturday July 2, with a purple and white theme, with 60 guests from all over NSW, Victoria and Queensland enjoying their nuptials. It was an eventful day and congratulations to this wonderful couple. The following week we had Marg Berry’s family reunion, and Lee Welds celebrating her 80th birthday with family and friends with a lunch in the Tuscany Room. Ray White Cowra and Canowindra staff held a miracle mystery dinner with a ‘70s theme in the Southhampton Room with lots of glitter, big wigs, and fancy disco clothes. They all had lots of fun, and I did a ‘70s style menu to go with the theme. Last Friday Carol Kinsela celebrated her birthday with a wonderful group of family and friends with a beautiful, intimate dinner. Last Saturday Sally Benheim held a triple combined birthday dinner for a group of very elegant friends from Sydney and Melbourne in the Southhampton Room. This week the Canowindra Garden Club luncheon will be in the Tuscany Room, and on Thursday the very elegant Jean Mary Fagan will have her 80th birthday luncheon for family and great friends in the Tuscany Room. Don’t forget our fabulous Christmas in July dinner at Montrose House this Saturday. It’s only $35 per head for a delicious, festive meal in our delightfully decorated main room. Tickets are still available from me at Deli Lama. Get a table of friends and family and enjoy the festive atmosphere and the beautiful open fire. Just bring drinks and we’ll do the rest. Take care and Happy Christmas in July. Tommy xx

New Editor Looks Forward To Covering Canowindra

New Canowindra Phoenix Editor Joshua Matic says he is looking forward to engaging himself with the Canowindra community, after starting his new role as Editor of the newspaper this week. Mr Matic has already worked with The Phoenix Group of Newspapers since January this year, having edited The Forbes Phoenix newspaper, as well as reporting for The Hilltops Phoenix newspaper (Young, Harden and Boorowa). With him now working on a different publication, there will be new things to learn and new people to meet, but he said these were challenges he was keen to take on board. “Canowindra is one of many friendly plac-

es that can be found in the Central West, and if it is anything like my experiences in Forbes and the Hilltops region, it will be a fantastic community to work in,” he said. Mr Matic said great foundations had already been laid at the newspaper since its inauguration several years ago, and there were many great things on the horizon for the free, community newspaper. “The newspaper has a great business model, and being a free publication, it is one available to anyone at any time. I also love the fact that our local farmers and other rural residents in the region get the newspaper mailed straight to their property, free of charge,” he said.

CANOWINDRA SPORT PYTHONS WIN BIG ON LADIES DAY

IMAGE: Jack Knight of the Canowindra Pythons throws the ball in during their win over Condobolin last Saturday.

MENS BOWLS

Last Saturday a major triples match was played with Terry Mooney, Brent Lees and Vinnie Mirto against Peter Taylor, Roger Traves and Dool. It was an entertaining game with the scores being close throughout the game and the lead changing several times. The scores were 17 all on the second last end and it was Brent’s bowl on the jack on the last end that won the game for Terry Brent and Vinnie 18-17. Thanks to Bob Robson filling in for Terry who had to leave urgently during the game. There was also a consistency singles game with Bruce Webb against Jono Preston. The scores were close after 13 ends with Bruce leading 85-80. Then Bruce took control for the rest of the game winning 153-122. No championship games are drawn for this weekend due to the ladies having their triples tournament. Mixed mufti bowls continue this Thursday July 21 with names in by 1.00pm for 2.00pm start. All welcome. Bring a friend. A further reminder that membership subscriptions are now overdue for 2016-2017. Please note that bowlers must be registered as full members to play any championship games for the 2017 calendar year. Wednesday badge draw $1,100. Friday badge draw $400. Bingo this Thursday 11am. Four of our members are celebrating birthdays this month- Heather Hoad and Ellen Petty on the 22nd, Deanna Noble on the 23rd and Shirley Robson on the 26th. A very happy birthday to you all.

LADIES GOLF

The fourth monthly medal and putting was played on 13th July in strong headwinds

and a hint of sunshine, heavy conditions and a little more local water than usual. Annette won the monthly medal, Rhonda won the Stableford and Eileen won the putting. Due to the wet weather, the Pennants against West Wyalong was postponed several times but was finally contested at West Wyalong. The home team were just too strong and more comfortable with the wet conditions and convincingly won the day and the round. WDLGA 4BBB Vs Par event was held 29/6/16 with a very excited combination of Annette Thomas and Maria Agustin winning with +4, and Joyce & Julie a close second with +3. The finals will be contested at Tottenham on the 19th August. Canowindra had 6 ladies who were able to play in the Cowra tournament. Cowra is a great course to play and they had two days of fine weather then a very cold & wet Friday for the foursomes. Nevertheless, Wednesday Joyce had a Nearest the Pin and Thursday saw Annette win A grade Handicap, Julie win B grade scratch as well as two nearest the pins. The partnership of Julie & Joyce come in as Runner Up for the foursomes on Friday. 8/6/16 Veterans Championship: Div 1 Annette Thomas 100 Scratch, R/U Julie Fairley 82 Nett, Div 2 Eileen Wilson 104 Scratch, R/U Joyce Middleton 83 Nett, Div3 Edna Hughes 129 scratch, R/U Ann Cassidy 92 Nett, Senior Vet Helen Constable 87 Nett. Our daily winners were; A grade Annette with 81 Nett and Joyce with 83 Nett, Ball sweep Edna & lucky wheel Margie Sharpe. The next match play will soon be underway as well as the Canowindra Foursomes Championships being held over two days of 27 holes.

It was one of the biggest days on the Canowindra Python’s calendar, and the home side certainly made the most of it, running away with the game by a whopping 62-5 over the Condobolin Rams in Canowindra. The win was a much-needed one for the Pythons, being their fifth win for the season and putting them into equal fourth on the Graincorp Cup Southern Division ladder. They trail West Wyalong, who currently hold fourth place, merely on for and against, and with three rounds still to play, they have a great chance of sneaking into the top four and qualifying for the play-offs. The Pythons will get a rest this weekend, having a BYE, and they will play their final two home-and-away season matches away to West Wyalong, and away again to competition leaders Blayney. There was plenty of off-field action for Ladies Day, with raffle tickets being sold to raise money for local sports star Dylan Slattery and the Canowindra netball team, the Pythonetties. Just under $300 was raised for the Pythonetties girls, which will go towards kits and some new equipment.
