Roads Close And Bridge Gets Repaired As Canowindra Receives Another Drenching

While flooding of the Belubula River in Canowindra fell short of the moderate level forecast last week, torrential rain throughout the region still forced the closure of some roads, and repairs to a culvert on the Cherry Tree Falls Bridge. The Belubula River reached a peak of 5.4 metres at Canowindra at around 6am last Thursday, forcing the closure of Soldier Settlement Bridge on the Goologong Road, the Canowindra-Woodstock Road at Gallaghers Lane, and the Canowindra-Mandurama Road at Cherry Tree Falls Bridge. Ophir Road was also closed at Ophir Reserve, while Rivers Road was closed at the Bangaroo Bridge. All roads have since been reopened in the Canowindra area. The water pressure proved too much to handle for the Cherry Tree Falls Bridge, with

Council undergoing repair works to the culvert on the bridge, and was able to reopen it on Friday afternoon. In Molong, Molong Creek reached a moderate flood level, while in Eugowra, Mandagery Creek peaked at 8.3 metres, isolating some low lying areas but otherwise finishing at a minor flood level. Heavy falls fell again across the Canowindra area on Friday night, with some areas seeing up to 37 millimetres of rain, but drier conditions across the weekend prevented local rivers from rising again significantly. With more rain expected between now and September, residents should refer to the SES Floodsafe website, http://www. floodsafe.com.au, for flood warnings in their area, or Council’s website, https:// www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au, for road and bridge closures.

Historical Society Enjoys Fromelles Centenary Event About 60 people attended the Canowindra Historical Society’s ‘History in the Club’ function last Friday at the Services Club, which was about the centenary of the famous Battle of Fromelles. Visitors from as far as Orange and Parkes also attended, and their relatives were included in the commemorations. The Battle of Fromelles was the first action of Australian troops on the Western Front in WW1, and the greatest loss of Australian life in any 24-hour period. Historical Society president Ross Cleary explained the military reasons for this disaster and the bigger picture of the Western Front, and Harold Balcomb presented a moving and insightful account of the involvement of five local (Cranbury) men in this battle : his father, Horace Balcomb, Clarrie Nash, Harold Whitmee, Keith “Bar-

ney” Davis, and Jim Jones. Mim Loomes presented the story of Albert Williamson, from Nyrang Creek, whose body was recovered recently from the mass grave at Fromelles, and Tobie Gilmore and Aden Day - Year 12 students at Cowra High School - presented stories of local brothers Peter and William Thompson. Peter survived Gallipoli but died in Fromelles, while William died later on the Western Front. Ross Cleary concluded the presentation with an account of the uplifting story of the discovery of the mass graves at Fromelles and subsequent re-burials in recent years of many of these soldiers. Descendants of a number of these soldiers attended, and brought a number of rare items for display, including personal diaries, letters, kitbags, and pay slips from a POW camp.

‘Discover The Riches’ Campaign Reaches 4 Million A campaign designed to showcase the assets of the 12 villages of Cabonne has accumulated a reach of more than 4 million achieved in less than weeks since going to air. Villages involved include Molong, Canowindra, Borenore, Cargo, Cudal, Cumnock, Eugowra, Manildra, Mullion Creek, Ophir, Nashdale and Yeoval. ‘Discover the Riches’ was a television and online marketing campaign showcasing the best of Cabonne Country. Project Director Caddie Marshall said she was proud of the team that put the marketing campaign together. “The campaign has hit national media and the adverts have even been viewed internationally with social media reach of more than 250,000 impressions, website visitation standing at close to 10,000 unique users and video views exceeding 25,000 with the campaign not yet concluded,” she said. “From all reports the campaign has hit a real nerve with viewers. Feedback has been flooding in and it seems the highly emotive essence really managed to get to the heart of the region.” Caddie said the project had exceeded expectations, with engagement and community collaboration allowing people from outside of Cabonne to learn how great local attractions really are. “We have effectively showcased our beautiful rich landscape and people enjoying an authentic country experience by inviting people to take a day, a week, or a lifetime, to ‘Discover the Riches’,” she said. “We were extremely fortunate to have such an amazing product to sell; the iconic villages, landscapes and characters.” “The success of the campaign proves what a talented group of marketing professionals we have in our local area which is a real asset within itself.”

EducationWeek 2016 Local Schools Set For Education Week Next week is Public Education Week for all public schools across NSW, and at Canowindra High School, each faculty will be doing its own special something to celebrate what’s great about public education. But Principal Mrs Smurthwaite said her school gives all students the diverse learning environment they need at all times, and not just on special occasions. On August 15 it will host wheelchair basketball players, who will give talks and clinics to students, and enforce the fact that a disability doesn’t have to be a disability. It will host the Black Dog Institute in late August, which will give special talks to students. Canowindra Public School will be using Education Week next week to host its annual Scholastic Book Fair and its open day for parents. The Book Fair will be held next Friday, and will offer students and the school’s wider community a great opportunity to purchase some great reads. The school’s open day will be next Wednesday between 12pm and 1pm, and will provide parents or guardians of the students the chance to see their children completing class work. There is more happening at the school as well. It will host its trivia night fundraiser on August 13 and its school concert on September 21, while 45 students will attend this year’s district athletics carnival in Cowra. Cudal Public School’s Education Week

theme is “Shared Stories, Better Learning, Stronger Communities”, and school celebrations will support this through a book fair and parade, and a ‘parents as teachers’ session, where parents are invited to come into the school and share their stories and special interests. An Access Asia carousel day, where students will immerse themselves in Cambodian culture, music, games, cooking and sport, will also take place. To conclude the week a formal church service and assembly will be held before everyone gets to witness a very special talent quest conducted by all students showcasing their individual talents in drama, music, dance and vocals. Other village schools near Canowindra are Cargo Public School and Goologong Public School, and each of these schools will be holding their own events for Education Week as well. As their motto goes, “small schools are great schools”. Enrol now for

What an interesting 12 months it has been that have passed. Most farmers and graziers I would think, would be happy to have behind us. A short Spring followed by a severe Summer, with lots of hot and dry weather, and a late autumn break has offered little relief for most graziers. Pastures have felt the pressure, and more robust perennial pastures have been pushed hard, allowing greater broadleaf weed invasion. Each locality, farm and/or paddock will have its own weed issues. Any one or a combination of thistles including Saffron, Variegated, St Barnabys, Spear (Black) and True Scotch thistles seem to be prevalent. Capeweed and Paterson’s Curse could also be an issue in some localities. However with the success of biological controls it may not be necessary to use herbicide control for Patersons Curse. MCPA or 2-4D Amine, often with spike rates of Clopyralid (Lontrel), can be used for control of most thistles. The addition of Turbutyn (Igran) may be necessary for effective control of Capeweed. This should be applied as soon as possible, avoiding temperatures above 18 degrees, and also before the capeweed gets too advanced. Where possible, thistle control should be undertaken as soon as practical, particularly on the slopes where early sub clover varieties will start flowering through August. For specific advice please contact one of the agronomists from The Rural Centre Manildra office on 6364 5311 or the Orange office on 6362 1899.

Cattle Prices On The Rise

KMWL Forbes Livestock Agency Agent Paul Breen says cattle prices have trended upwards over the last month, and predicts this trend will continue for at least the next month as well. Sheep prices showed fluctuation, however cattle prices have continually risen, with this week’s sales on Monday and Tuesday producing an average price of $3.92 per kilo for feeder cattle, and between $3.40 and $3.65 per kilo for prime cattle. Recent heavy rainfall across the Central West has been great for cattle, with lush, green grass keeping all livestock healthy. Mr Breen said there were lots of positives in the cattle market at the moment. “On Monday and Tuesday we had a strong buyer bench, with buyers coming from northern and southern NSW to be in Forbes at the sale yards,” he said. “We will likely see the price per kilo trend upwards over the next few weeks, and I think at worst prices will remain the same as this week.” KMWL also held sheep sales on the same days this week, with prices fluctuating, however Mr Breen said this was to be expected, and this trend would likely continue for now. This week season lambs sold for around $164 each, while mutton lambs sold for between $118 and $125. Merino sheep sales were down on price, due to the rise in lamb prices, with Merinos selling for $155- $15 down.

RURAL ROUNDUP McLachlan Group To Host Annual Bull Sale

The McLachlan Group bull breeding business will be holding its annual bull sale at the ‘North Logan’ property on North Logan Road, Cowra, on August 10. The sale will be the business’ fifth annual sale, and McLachlan Group’s Warren Miller said it should be a popular sale. McLachlan Group is a bull breeding business that sells Angus bulls, Charolais bulls and Polhereford bulls. All of their bulls are grass fed, meaning they live longer, and produce better quality beef. The business mostly sells cattle directly to meat works businesses, but hosts its big annual sale once per year. Mr Miller said the quality and performance of McLachlan Group’s bulls meant its bulls were very valuable. “We strive to make our bulls live as long as possible, and live a healthy life, which is why we grass feed them,” he said. “Our bulls are of the highest quality, which means our buyers get the best grass fed beef they can.” Mr Miller said the past four annual sales, the previous two of which have been in Cowra and the two before in the Southern Highlands, have been hugely popular, with bulls selling for about $4000 each. He expected the August 10 sale in Cowra to be similar. The sale will feature 35 Angus bulls, 20

Charolais bulls and 2 Polhereford bulls, with this sale being the first time the McLachlan Group has sold Polhereford bulls. With Angus bulls being the most popular for beef, Mr Miller said he expected these to sell fast. Recent heavy rainfalls across the Central West have allowed the grass across the region to grown very green and lush, and Mr Miller said this has seen cattle sales across the region sell very well over the last couple of months. With cattle across the region being healthy at the moment, the price of them is also healthy, and recent sales across the region have been very healthy. Mr Miller said this should help his sale reach good heights on August 10. “Locals have been getting great return on their bulls lately, and I think this will help us get good prices on our bulls,” he said. “The internal market is very strong at the moment, but with our bulls being 100 per cent grass fed, buyers on the day will get the best quality of bulls to buy as well, and that’s really what we’re about.” The annual sale on Wednesday August 10 will start at 1pm at ‘North Logan’, and all cattle buyers in the region are being encouraged to attend.

YOUR Wealth Matters Hi everyone,

Canowindra Public School Enters Tournament Of The Minds

Canowindra Public School has entered students into schools problem-solving challenge, ‘Tournamnet of the Minds’, in August this year, for the first time. Tournament of the Minds is an internationally recognised student challenge that offers opportunities for students in both primary and high school. Tournament of the Minds is a problemsolving programme for teams of students, of which there are seven students in a team. They are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from a discipline of their choice, including Science Technology, Engineering Mathematics, Social Sciences and Language Literature. The programme gives students; particularly those who excel and require extra curricula, the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. Being held in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Hong Kong, the programme aims to offer students a unique, total experience, providing challenge and growth through its six-week problem solving structure.

Its process aims to deliver a platform for excellence, and equip students with strategies and skills that will support future success. Tournament of the Minds mirrors real life businesses practice, and as such, promotes teamwork, effective problem solving, thinking outside the square and the use of technology. Canowindra Public School has entered one team of seven students into this year’s event, and they will spend the next six weeks working on solving their selected problem. They will present their problem solution to a panel of judges in Bathurst on August 28, and on that day, they will also be given spontaneous tasks to complete, which they will also be marked on. Canowindra Public School Principal Sharon Hawker said the programme was great for students needing an extra challenge in their schooling. “We picked seven students that we thought would be best for the programme, and the seven students will be split into individual roles within the team and have their own tasks,” she said.

Balloon Challenge Wins Bronze At Tourism Awards The Canowindra International Balloon Challenge has received a big accolade, being awarded the bronze medal at the NSW Regional Tourism Awards last Saturday night. They won bronze in the category of ‘Festivals and Events’, and were only beaten by the typically large events of the Parkes Elvis Festival, and the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Congratulations on a great result to all involved with the Canowindra International Balloon Challenge!

I wanted to draw your attention to the influence the media has over us. Unlike quality publications such as The Phoenix, some media outlets draw their audience by constantly trying to have us living in fear. And matters regarding wealth are not immune to this problem. Take for example the headline in the Daily Telegraph recently, ‘Super funds delivering small returns’… Now reading that headline and the first paragraph talking about the lowest returns in 4 years (3% growth on average), you’d possibly be left with a negative sentiment towards super. However, anyone who read the article through until completion would have read that the median growth fund has delivered average annual returns of 8.8% over the last seven years. Hardly cause for alarm that last financial year only returned 3%! We can go through life listening to all the ‘noise’ projected our way (read: rubbish), or we can ignore the noise, look between the lines and find quality, independent information that allows us to make informed and confident decisions going forward. Quite simply, superannuation is just a tax structure. It’s the best legal tax break in town. The fact is that anyone who doesn’t like super just doesn’t understand super. Those who understand it are using it to build retirement nest eggs in a tax effective way that will enable them to pay themselves a decent income in retirement. You have enormous control over your superannuation… Therefore, make sure you understand how your super is invested and what fees you’re paying so that you maximise it for the many days you look forward to enjoying being retired. Cheers, Daniel

GREEN Thumb While we all love the rain across our region in the last couple of months, continued wet weather does highlight some parts of our gardens that are poorly drained and this can be a challenge for keeping plants alive under such conditions. Physical solutions such as installing subsurface drainage pipes or digging small channels to collect and divert water away from poorly drained sites in the garden are one option, as is raising the garden beds by building up the soil or installing structures such as steel or timber garden edges. My preferred option though is to find plants that will tolerate “wet feet”-this is probably the best long term solution for parts of the garden that are prone to poor drainage. Perennial plants that will handle wet feet include oyster plant (Acanthus), ajuga, Blechnum ferns, Siberian iris, mint, Arum lily and bog sage. Shrubs or small trees that are suited to wet soil conditions include a few Australian natives. Most Australian native plants are not at all suited to wet or boggy conditions and will die quicker than most plants under such conditions. However, a few bottlebrushes such as Callistemon citrinus (crimson bottlebrush), C. pallidus (lemon bottlebrush) and C. viminalis (weeping bottlebrush) are naturally suited to these conditions, as are Melaleuca (paperbarks). Mahonia is a hardy “exotic” shrub that can also handle wet soils. Larger trees that you might consider for wet spots in the garden include Australian natives Casuarina cunninghamiana (river she oak) and Casuarina glauca (swamp oak). Swamp cypress (Taxodium) is an interesting deciduous conifer that has great foliage colour in autumn and can tolerate wet feet on the edges of swamps, dams, ponds or streams. More traditional ornamental trees that can handle periods of wet growing conditions include golden elm, silver birch, tortured willows and pin oaks. By Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

New Canowindra Arts Group Hopes To Bring People To Town Canowindra Arts Group member Arthur Falconer says he hopes the group can keep bringing people into Canowindra in a continuous basis. The new Canowindra Arts Group will be holding its first event, The Artful Eight exhibition, from October 9 to October 22. The exhibition will open in the old hardware store on Gaskill Street, and will display the works of eight of the Canowindra region’s most talented artists. The official opening of the exhibition will be in conjunction with the opening of the 2016 Canowindra Baroquefest at 5.30pm on October 14, and all members of the public are welcome to come and view the artists works. The artists that will be on display are Heather Vallance, David Isbester, Melissa Barber, Derek Maitland, Sue Hodge and Virginia Mooney from Canowindra, Ann Morton from Cowra and Isabelle Mathieu from Cargo, with works from classic still life to vibrant contemporary styles. A new website for the Arts Group is under development and will be released in August. Mr Falconer said The Arts Group was formed to provide local artists of all genres the opportunity to display and promote their work locally and economically. “Operating as a not-for-profit we are looking to fund the start-up through public donations,” he said. “In the long-term, benefits to Canowindra will include increased tourist visitation and new residents, and a direct economic benefit to local businesses, so even the smallest donations will bring returns to the village.” “There are many great events in Canowindra already that bring tourists to town, but we aim to achieve this on a more continuous basis. We’d like to make it a town where people want to keep coming.”

Free Plants On National Tree Day It’s the yearly event that keeps growing, and Cowra Council is inviting residents to embrace their inner green thumb by taking part in the 21st National Tree Day. Cowra Council will be giving away 2800 trees, shrubs, and grasses, Technical Officer for Cowra Services Mark Tucker said. The event will be staged at the Cowra Showground Sheep Pavilion this Sunday, July 31. “We’ll be giving away native trees, shrubs and grasses tube stock from 9am but get in early, we finish up at about 12 noon, or earlier if stock runs out,” Mr Tucker said. “National Tree Day is a fulfilling opportunity to connect with our community, to do something good for our local environment and benefit your health by spending some time in nature.” Planet Ark’s National Tree Day Manager, Debbie Agnew, said trees help people grow happier and healthier. “However, the impacts of just adding nature are significant, including benefits to mental and physical health and wellbeing. This year’s National Tree Day theme, ‘Grow More – Just Add Nature’, highlights how we can use the power of nature to help us reach our full potential in all aspects of our lives. We all need nature to thrive,” she said. Last year nearly 300,000 people took part at over 3500 sites across the country, planting more than 1.2 million native trees, shrubs and edibles and helping to green Australia.

Canowindra Young Guns Impress At State Champs Canowindra Public School students Kyra Fisher, Deegan Hogan and Louise Woods may not have qualified for National Championships, but they still did their school and town proud just by qualifying for the NSW State Championships in cross country racing, held in Sydney last Friday. It was a massive achievement just to have made it that far by the youngsters, and School Principal Sharon Hawker said it was the first time in memory that one student, let alone three, had qualified for the State Championships. To qualify for the next level of cross country running, students must finish in the top six of the level they just competed in. The three Canowindra Public School students each finished in the top six at the school cross country earlier this year, before doing the same at the zone race, and then the same again at the Western Region event.

This gave them a ticket to the State level event, which was held at Eastern Creek in Sydney. Each student made the top 100 in their year group, but fell short of the top six to qualify for the Nationals. Kyra Fisher is in Year 5, as is Deegan Hogan, while Louise Woods is in Year 6. Mrs Hawker said her students’ achievements were a great reflection of the school. “I think our primary fitness sessions helped these kids with their fitness and training. We’ve found these sessions beneficial for all students, and the school has also increased its student sport time as well,” she said. “It’s great for a small country school. Three students going all that way is quite remarkable, and something to be proud of.” Each student ran three kilometres in each cross country they raced in this year. By Joshua Matic
