CWA Win First In Handicraft

Canowindra CWA ladies are celebrating after placing first in the Central West Handicraft exhibition in Orange last week. Three of their items were chosen from ten to go to State on the Central Coast in May to be judged against other exhibitors across NSW. Mary Newman was one of those successful exhibitors with her crocheted shawl. This item was judged on the finishing of the article, evenness of work and a suitable pattern for the yarn used. “I’m very pleased I could contribute to Canowindra. It was made of sock wool 4ply. I was surprised it got chosen but I think it was due to the intricate pattern I chose,” Mary Newman said. Two other CWA ladies were also successful with Tricia Pearce with her bobbin

lace bookmark and Doreen Moore with a knitted infant cardigan. Bobbin lace is exceptionally fine work with not a lot of people doing it anymore. It is very meticulous as it is lace made by hand with bobbins of thread being twisted around pins stuck into a pattern. All three of the handicraft work demonstrates exceptional talent we have in Canowindra. Bev Taylor handicraft organiser said, “I am very proud to be able to showcase the workmanship and skill that these ladies put into their handicraft.” A special thanks to Bron Tremain who staged the handicraft display and accepted the trophy on behalf of the CWA branch.

The Council is currently preparing its 201718 Budget and the removal of the merger proposal restrictions will enable us to plan with certainty to ensure that Cabonne continues to grow and prosper. Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton has announced that Council elections will be held on 9 September 2017. I am sure voters will have a number of talented candidates to choose from and I urge anyone considering standing for Council to do so. The NSW Electoral Commission and Cabonne Council are expected to conduct forums and workshops for prospective councillors prior to the September 9 poll and Council will keep you informed when the dates for these forums are confirmed. One of the most exciting projects we will be working on is formulating a public-private partnership to build retirement accommodation in Canowindra. After several years of working with the Canowindra Retirement Village Project Association Inc, Council has sought expressions of interest from not-for-profit community housing providers to develop accommodation under the Retirement Vil-

lages Act on land in Mill Street. Expressions of Interest closed on February 15 and Council is now seeking authority from the Office of Local Government to enter into the partnership with a community care provider to get the project underway. I am proud to welcome Canowindra councillor Kevin Walker to the position of Deputy Mayor after Lachie MacSmith stepped down from the role. As many of you would know, Kevin has been a passionate supporter and worker for Canowindra and Cabonne Shire for many years and he will do a great job. I thank Cr MacSmith for his hard work representing the people of Cabonne over the past four and a half years. Cr Ian Gosper Mayor of Cabonne

Sowing Is Under Way For Central West Farmers The recent rain saw farmers quick to be on the paddocks to begin sowing or preparation for the year with the soil finally having a bit of moisture in it. After chatting to a local farmer in between him filling up bins, Lawrence Balcomb gave us some tips on what to expect this time of year and what to look out for. “March is the time for more early cereal crops, look out for the aphid virus this season, if it rains this wont be a problem. You can treat this with insecticide or by having treated seed,” Lawrence said. The Russian wheat aphid is a significant pest for Australian farmers of cereal crops during autumn, however wet conditions see a large decrease in their numbers. Be on the lookout for a white to purple stripe on leaves, rolled and later on heads can be trapped if infected with the virus. With more rain falling throughout the week it looks promising for farmers for the year ahead with sowing continuing into early May. Agronomist Jamie Thornberry says, “I think this year farmers will need to be a bit more proactive in managing their stubble loads before sowing so their machines can cope, also to look out for disease carry over and nitrogen nutrition will also be big factors after last year.” There is a big emphasis on nitrogen this year with a focus on getting the nitrogen rate right rather than timing, application or method. “Fifteen research trials by the GRDC funded Northern Grower Alliance over the last three years found that the rate of nitrogen; not timing or application methods, was consistently the dominant factor affecting wheat yield, grain quality and economic return,” Toni Somes GRDC. Many farmers are getting in early to sow their crops to help yield better with hot and dry finishes, better establishment from early sowing, varieties that flower early will have a longer grain filling period, deeper roots, less yield loss from crown rot, however the negative impact of this is frost damage, some varieties not suitable to early sowing, more risk of leaf disease, dry sowing can be risky due to false break and less opportunity for weed control, according to GRDC research.

RURAL ROUNDUP Frost Ahead For Crops With winter not so far away farmers will have to consider the frost impact on their crops. Frost occurs on clear nights throughout the winter season when the air temperature drops to two degrees celcius or less. This can be damaging to crops especially around the flowering time. Ice can form inside the plant tissue and as it expands it bursts the membranes, resulting in mechanical damage and dehydration. Frost damage can lead to reduced grain yields and quality, according to the Department of Agriculture and Food. To avoid frost farmers can opt for a frost tolerant crop or plant pastures in paddocks that have the worst frosts. Oats are one of the best cereal crops that are least susceptible to frost damage as it can handle about 4 degrees more than what wheat or barley can. Research is being conducted into the impact of spring frosts at the GRDC, pointing to the need for integrated management while parallel efforts continue to find a robust solution. The aim of the project is to benchmark Australian cultivators and material sourced from frost proned regions of the world to first identify differences in frost susceptibility and then use this genetic diversity to improve yield stability of Australian cultivators.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update The NRI gained 31 cents to finish the week at 1636. The record prices have brought previously unwilling sellers to market, pushing the amount of wool being held in broker’s stores to historical lows. 18.5 micron and finer enjoyed gains of 60‐100 cents however towards the end of the last selling day the Fremantle market showed signs of softening in the 20.5 micron and broader range, with some types easing up to 25 cents (the price differentials between 18 and 21microns now stands at over 700 cents). The skirting market closely mirrored the fleece market with general gains across the board, with the finer microns experiencing the largest gains. The crossbred market again performed well, with 25.0 to 26.0 microns improving by 10‐30 cents while other descriptions remained unchanged. The oddment market struggled to maintain its current high levels and generally lost 5‐15 cents for the week with finer better types least affected.

If you ever read through the comments sections of online news articles about government debt, you’ll find numerous people complaining about how it is going to rob our children of lifestyle in the future and that a simple solution is to stop handing out the dole to those bludgers who are too ‘lazy’ to work. These are likely the same people who will be happy to go on the ‘dole’ when they’re older. The definition of someone on the dole is a person who is unemployed and reliant on welfare to make ends meet, which describes most Australian retirees! Somehow, I don’t think they would see it that way, nor do I… but how will you feel when you get to 67 if you can’t afford to pay the bills without receiving welfare payments? This is the reality most Australians face in retirement. It’s time we recognise the simple facts that we are living longer and longer and that it’s not the government’s job to pay for any of us to be retired. In a first world country like Australia we will continue to pay an age pension to ensure people can survive, but if you’re like most people, I don’t believe you want to wake up at retirement and discover you’ve worked your entire adult life to then spend the next 30-40 years just ‘surviving’. At Wealth Train, we don’t want to see people surviving in retirement, we want to see them thriving! Get on board and learn how. Cheers, Daniel Daniel McGregor is a founding partner of Wealth Train, an Australian Financial Services Licence Holder (474966) empowering Australians with financial education. Any advice given is general in nature and readers should seek their own professional advice before making any financial decisions.

I’ve written about autumn vegie and herb plantings in previous Green Thumb columns. But it is a great time to start a productive vegie patch. The scorching heat of summer is behind us, the soil is nice and warm so you will get good plant root establishment and growth before the shorter, frosty days of winter descend upon us. Before talking about what to plant, it’s important to refresh the soil in your vegie garden at this time of year too. Scatter compost or aged animal manure across the soil and dig the soil deeply to incorporate the organic matter and nutrients from these great, natural products. Then throw some fertilizer out too. Again I favour organic fertilizers such as dynamic lifter, but there is a huge range of commercial garden fertilizers available in nurseries and rural supply stores. When deciding what to plant where, remember to rotate your crops to minimise disease risk and nutrient deficiency in the soil. It’s particularly good to plant aggressive growing, nutrient hungry plants like broccoli and cabbage in areas where you have previously grown legume plants such as peas and beans that actually add nitrogen nutrient to the soil. What to plant now? Vegie seedlings such as rocket, broccoli, lettuce, onions, spinach, cabbage, beetroot, cauliflower and leeks are ready to go! Garlic cloves and seeds of broad beans and peas are also good to plant now. In the herb garden, seedlings of coriander, fennel, oregano, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme and mint can all be planted now. On the subject of planning for your garden, now is the right time to be thinking about what new deciduous trees (ornamental or fruiting) and roses you may want to plant in your garden in a few months time. Nurseries will be ordering their bare root trees and roses about now, so if you are likely to want some special ones, contact the nursery now to make sure they will be available. The Junior Pythons at Allianz Stadium for the curtain raiser before the Waratahs vs Brumbies game.

JUNIOR PYTHONS PLAY AT ALLIANZ STADIUM The NSW Waratahs Rugby Union Team have been very pro-active in the Central West over the last two months. After running a free coaching clinic in Orange they invited the Canowindra Junior Pythons to play last Saturday night in the curtain raiser before the Waratahs vs Brumbies match at Allianz Stadium in Sydney. This was a very big stadium for such a very small team! “It was exciting and better than cool to play in front of such a large crowd”, said Lachlan Rice, one of the lucky team members. The Canowindra Junior Pythons were asked to put together a team consisting of Under 8’s and 9’s and we were up against the larger town of Wellington. Although the season has not yet started and registration is on the 31st of March, the players showed great skill and tenacity to overcome Wellington three tries to one. Local players included: Lachlan Rice (two tries), Oscar Cleary (one try), Campbell (Burger) Arnott, Hugh Nash, Tully Godfrey, Jonty Bullock and Alex Rice. Other members included Canowindra girl Rachel Balcomb’s sons, Archie and Thomas Balcomb, and other Orange players were Jack Garlick and Will Cornish. Special mention to Sasha Lewis, Lachie and Alex’s cousin from Sydney, who is also a keen rugby player. After they played the kids were able to watch the Waratahs warm up and meet the team mascot. The Waratahs and Brumbies signed autographs for the players. Alex Rice, who did not have any merchandise

to sign, decided to get his forehead signed by a Brumbies player and Reuben Cleary got both his arms signed by the Waratahs. A big thank you goes to Jarrod Simpson, Central West Rugby Development Officer and Bec from the Waratahs in Sydney who helped organise the weekend. Don’t forget, it is not too late to join the Canowindra Pythons as registration is next Friday the 31st of March at 4pm at the oval. We have teams for Under 7’s, 9’s. 11’s and 13’s. So come along for rego and a free sausage sizzle! By Anne Maree Rice
