Cabonne Councillor Anthony Durkin, Mandy Townsend 2016 President, Director Liz Francis, President Nadine Daly and Treasurer Katy Henry overlooking the new plans for the Canowindra Pre School.

Pre School Wish Granted

Canowindra Pre School are thrilled to announce that they have received a grant for $246,090 for an extension to their service. “What a great outcome for the Pre School & the community of Canowindra. It's an amazing start to begin my term as president.” Nadine Daly said. The Capital Grants program is an $8 million funding initiative from the NSW government. Grants fund the construction of new preschools or the expansion of existing ones. The grant is designed to help create 500 additional places for children aged four or five in areas of high need around the state. Previous President Mandy Towsend said, “This is something we have been working on for nearly two years now to expand the service to incorporate more age groups.”

An extension is planned to create a community mulit-purpose room, which will also cater for administration needs. This will allow for larger classrooms and numbers. Director Liz Francis said, “We would like to thank the community of Canowindra for their ongoing support towards the pre school as without your support from fundraising throughout the year this grant wouldn’t have been possible.” The pre school have been hard at work fundraising over the past year with the money raised from events all helping in the grant application to show that the community and pre school would contribute and support this expansion. This is a wonderful result for the Canowindra Pre School and will contribute greatly to the community of Canowindra.

Wow! What a busy few weeks we have had and have coming up. A huge congratulations to the Canowindra Pre School on receiving a massive grant of $246,090! This will not only be a great contribution to the Pre School but the whole community. The Canowindra Balloon Challenges is only weeks away with community organisations busy organising stalls for the event. This year we are proud to have the Hummingbird balloon all the way from Albuquerque, which will be a main attraction at the Balloon Glow. Talking about flying the team here at the Phoenix have decided to let me jump out of a plane, willingly I might add. This Saturday I will skydive 14 000ft above Dubbo at approximately 180km per hour with skydiveoz. If that doesn’t get your heart racing I don’t know what will. Stay tuned on Facebook for live updates on the day and an article in next week’s paper to see if I am still alive. Coming up we have Easter next weekend, the International Balloon Challenge

from the 18th-25th April and Anzac Day on the 25th April. Easter celebrations have already begun with hat parades commencing at all of the schools. Hats were decorated from top to bottom and each year group had a different theme. It’s great to see everyone getting into the spirit and the kids certainly loved it! Also don’t forget that we have moved! We are now located at 84 Gaskill Street. With a couple of busy weeks coming up with events I am always more than happy to come to events. Send me an email or give me a call. Have a great week! Taneil xx

QUESTION of the week national Balloon Challenge. Canowindra Bowling Club: Wednesday badge draw is $200 and Friday badge draw is $200. Bingo this Thursday 11am.

What is the most adventurous thing you have done?

We have moved!: You can now find the Phoenix at 84 Gaskill Street, opposite Montrose House.

Lauren Theobald showing off her engagement ring with partner Billy Ellis.

Congratulations: To Billy Ellis and Lauren Theobald on their engagement! Billy and Lauren have just moved to Canowindra from England and plan on settling down here. Billy proposed in Melbourne last Friday, we wish you all the best for the future! Royal Far West: Have raised $600,000 from their bike ride that travelled through Canowindra as part of their 420km journey to raise money for Country Kids Education. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea: Is approaching with the official date being Thursday 25th May. Get along and support local organisations raising money for this event. Tallulah’s Living Colour Cabaret: Is on the 21st April 7.30pm at the Canowindra Services Club to raise money for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

New Playground: Canowindra Public School officially opened their new playground last week with the P&C raising $28 000 for the new equipment. The specific play equipment was chosen to suit a range of ages as well as being safe and fun for the students. The students already love it! Hemp as a renewable resource: Commercial production of hemp is permitted under legislation in Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland, ACT and Western Australia. Many are using it as a building material as it is flame, water and pest resistant. It is also naturally non-toxic, an incredible insulation material, strong, lightweight, breathable and energy efficient. Hemp is not the same strand of plant as marijuana. Upgrade Escort Way: The notorious black spot near Eugowra has received a $460 000 upgrade to improve safety. The work involved includes a barrier, shoulder sealing and enlarging the distance between the edge of the roadway and dangerous obstacles.

Nadine Daly: Bungy jumping off the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Mandy Towsend: Putting the family in a motorhome and travelling around Europe.

Percy the Pig: Went the whole hog and made it to Orange from Boorowa with the ‘fit farmers’ pushing it all the way. The event was to raise money for Country Education Foundation. Congratulations on the team for starting a great event! New Balloon Announced: The Hummingbird Balloon will travel all of the way from Albuquerque to Canowindra for the Inter-

Andrew Gee with councillor Kevin Walker following the upgrade to escort way.

Balloon Challenge Takes Flight

The days are counting down until this year’s International Balloon Challenge with only 2 weeks left to go. “This is one of the most visually spectacular events anyone can see!” Organiser Graham Kerr said. The event will run from the 18th-25th April with some new attractions this year. A new addition to this years challenge is the Hummingbird Balloon that has come all the way from the Balloon Capital of the World Albuquerque, New Mexico. This spectacular balloon will light up the Cabonne Country Balloon Glow as well as humming across the sky throughout the event. This years Balloon Challenge just keeps getting better with the announcement of a 6m blimp that will be hovering above Canowindra to promote the event. “This year we have attracted dozens of younger pilots and we also have Canowindras very own Anton Kerr competing in the event,” Organiser Jan Kerr said. Volunteer numbers are growing and you can still help by going to the Canowindra Challenge website. Mayor Ian Gosper said, “Any event that attracts thousands of people and injects millions of dollars into country communities is great, well done and congratulations”. The Balloon Challenge continues to go from strength to strength and this year it is set to be the best yet. You can pre purchase your Balloon Glow ticket at the Age of Fishes Museum for $15 before Wednesday 19th April. Other tickets can be purchased online. Is it a bird, is it a plane, no it’s a skydive! Plummeting towards the ground at 180km an hour from 14,000 feet above. Who wouldn’t want to give this a go? We are sending one of our reporters off to see what all the fuss is about. Why jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane you may ask? Why not is her response! A lot of people have skydiving on their bucket list and there is a good reason why. The adrenaline as you soar towards the ground and the moment of feeling free is pretty real. Bucket loads of emotions enter while dangling from a plane and than falling towards earth. First the excitement, then fear, adrenaline, more fear, excitement, awe, gratitude, exhilaration and pure amazement! There is no other feeling like skydiving and you have to experience it yourself to truly know. Whether you are an adrenaline junkie or not skydiving is a chance to overcome your fears and feel free. Places still available this weekend to skydive in Dubbo with Skydive Oz. www.skydiveoz.com.au/skydive-dubbo/ Stay tuned this Saturday on Facebook to see Taneil jump!

Have you noticed changes in your hearing this week or are you concerned about a family member or friend who may be finding it hard to hear. Hearing loss can lead to social, psychological and even physical problems if left untreated. A hearing problem can affect your ability to communicate with others causing you to become isolated and frustrated. People continue to hide their hearing loss with fear of the perceived stigma attached to hearing devices. People would rather avoid social situations, ask people to repeat themselves or even misunderstand people. It’s time to think about yourself and your long-term health. According to a recent survey 55% of people aged 50 years and over are willing to put up with poor hearing due to hearing devices looking unattractive or making them look too old. With new technology hearing devices are so small they are barely recognisable and allow you to experience life fully again. Australian Hearing will be conducting FREE community hearing checks at Canowindra Community Health Centre on the 13th April from 10am-12pm. Call 6340 3300 to secure your spot today, or if you would like a check sooner you can find them on the corner of Kite Street and Lords Place Orange, or phone them on 6393 0500. Great services are available in Canowin-

dra and surrounding areas such as Cowra Diagnostic Centre providing friendly, caring and professional service. High standard imaging is available including X-Ray, CT Scan and Ultrasound. Cowra Diagnostic Centre has your health as their focus with same day appointments and reports for your convenience. Bulk billing is available for CT and X-Ray. Call or walk in to make your appointment today located at 165-169 Kendal Street Cowra or phone them on 6342 4125. Open 8.30am-5pm from Monday to Friday. Pain could include fallen arches or flat feet making you more prone to bunions, nail nasties such as ingrown toenails and warts and back pain. References from within the industry will be regarded. The club bistro has recently been upgraded which allows it to be more family friendly . A regular bistro promotion and inviting change in menu will be part of the successful caterers obligations.

Stress is one of the most significant causes of weight gain, problem digestion, hormonal imbalance and sleep issues in our society, so the last thing we need to stress out about is diet! In a society that constantly inundates us with the next best diet, it can be difficult to stay focused and know what’s actually beneficial and effective for healthy weight. Is there a way to eat well—without losing your sanity and jumping from super foods to the next diet breakthrough, only to relapse and start the cycle again? Here are 5 Ayurvedic tips that can naturally guide you toward a healthy weight and better digestive system without the use of chemicals, processed food, or extreme diets.

The Sky’s The Limit

Canowindra Arts Inc is opening its third art exhibition featuring local and regional artists next week, with a “Sky High” theme marking this year’s annual Balloon Challenge and Balloon Glow. Artists taking part are being asked to submit at least one painting in their submission that has something to do with the sky, the air, anything that flies in the air and, of course, balloon artworks based on our town’s most spectacular annual attraction. “We’re expecting between 12 and 14 very talented, creative artists to take part in this exhibition,” says Canowindra Arts chairman Arthur Falconer. “Their continuing support shows that our program to help them show and sell their works and establish Canowindra as a regional arts and cultural hub is gaining ground with each exhibition that we stage.” The “Sky High” show opening on Good Friday, April 14 in the old IGA building in Gaskill Street will run for almost two weeks, ending on April 25. Its official opening will be held on Saturday April 15 at 6.30pm and, as always, the public are most welcome to join us for drinks and buffet snacks. The Balloon Challenge runs over eight days from April 18 to 25 and, as always, will attract thousands of visitors to Canowindra, particularly for the after-dark Balloon Glow. “There’ll be plenty of balloon paintings, digital art and photography for visitors to view and buy at the exhibition itself and at the craft stalls in the night market during the Balloon Glow. Canowindra Arts Inc is a not-for-profit community organisation that relies on grants, public donations and a small commission on art sales to develop its cultural role in Canowindra. Canowindra obviously likes what we’re doing, and we thank our townspeople for their enthusiastic support of the two major exhibitions we’ve staged so far." says Arthur.

Autism Awareness Month

With April being Autism Awareness Month here are some important facts to know. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong disorder characterized by social and learning impairment, communication difficulties and restricted and repetitive behaviours. It is often accompanied by sensory and learning difficulties. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder, meaning a difference in the way the brain is wired and how information is processed. There is no single known cause for this, but there is a strong genetic link. There is no proven evidence that it is linked to vaccines or trauma or lifestyle factors. It occurs in all nations, and all ethnic and socio-economic groups around the world. Autism Spectrum Disorder includes the diagnosis previously known as Asperger Syndrome, as well as classic Autism Disorder and PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified). It is estimated that 1 in 100 Australians are on the autism spectrum, and is four times more common in boys than girls. You can help by participating in or sponsoring the Walk for Autism running April 2 – 9. Donations can be made throughout April by logging onto autism-walk.everydayhero. com searching for Team Canowindra and clicking on Give Now. Or attend Tallulah’s Living Colour Cabaret show on April 21, 7.30pm at Canowindra Services and Citizen’s Club.
