The new Hummingbird Balloon that will feature at this years event.
Up, Up And Away
Waking up to a sky full of colourful balloons is an unusual sight for some, but not for the local residents of Canowindra as we celebrate the 8th annual Canowindra International Balloon Challenge. The annual event will run from the 18th25th April and is set to attract thousands of visitors into town. This year there is an exciting new addition to the event being the Hummingbird Balloon. The hummingbird has come all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to feature in this year’s international event. Canowindra is known for being Australia’s Ballooning Capital and there is no wonder
why with the perfect ballooning conditions. “Canowindra is situated in a basin, which means the high winds mostly pass over the top thus the winds are generally calm. The road network is also extremely good for retrieving the balloons after they land,” Organiser Jan Kerr said. The Balloon Glow will have performances by several dance groups including our local Alikinetic group, Fire dancers and a laser light show to name just a few of the attractions. Inflate your interest, expand your knowledge and keep one eye on the sky!

Canowindra is the Wiradjuri word for ‘home’ and we hope that is what it becomes for you while on your stay in our beautiful town. Canowindra will be a buzz with balloons filling the skies in the early hours of the morning. Awake early to be delighted with views like no other, colourful arrays of balloons float over head and the roar of the flames to keep them afloat is an experience like no other. After chasing the balloons to capture the picture perfect moment spend the rest of your day exploring our iconic little village. Dating back to the 19th century our bendy street takes you back in time.
Call into our many pubs and cafes available and enjoy a country style home cooked meal and coffee, you won’t be disappointed. Delve into history a bit more and visit the only dedicated fish fossil museum in the southern hemisphere, The Age of Fishes Museum. The 360 million year old fossils were found here in our backyard.
Wander down the main street and you will soon understand what all the fuss is about with the friendly locals making you feel quite at home. A community that form together like no other you will be sure to love the locals as much as we do. While enjoying all of what Canowindra has to offer be sure to go on a drive to enjoy the scenic country side. Canowindra is mostly made up of a farming community with the rich soil being perfect for vineyards and pastures. While on your stay really immerse yourself in our culture by enjoying some of our local produce and wine. Our home is now your home. Enjoy your stay!

Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper with the Cabonne Youth of the Month Bronte Chown.
Cabonne Youth Of The Month
Cudal’s Bronte Chown has been named Cabonne Youth of the Month and there’s no wonder after Bronte raised a massive $4,300 for the Leukemia Foundation. Bronte attends Molong Central School where she shaved her head to raise money for the Worlds Greatest Shave. Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper who was present at the School when Bronte shaved her head for the special event said, “Bronte had the entire school community behind her, chanting her name as she had her head shaved”. Bronte is an inspiration to all as she volunteered her time and effort towards selling raffle tickets and second hand items to help raise money for charity. Bronte also gave a number of speeches about the devastating effects of leukemia and the importance of participating in the Worlds Greatest Shave to the Molong Rotary, Cudal-Cargo Lions Club and her school. “In addition to her fantastic fundraising effort, she also donated her hair to Variety Australia,” said Cr Gosper.
Bronte is known as a diligent student who applies herself to all aspects of school, including being a keen sportsperson. She has played soccer for Cudal District Soccer for the past five years and represents Cudal Swimming Club in competitions. Cr Gosper said “Bronte is a communityminded young person with maturity beyond her years, she is a credit to herself and her family and an inspiration to her peers and the wider Cabonne community,” he said. The Cabonne Youth of the Month award recognises young achievers in the Cabonne area. Applicants show scholastic achievements, sporting achievements, leadership skills and community involvement at a school age. All recipients of this award then compete against one another to become the Cabonne Youth Ambassador announced on Australia Day. Congratulations Bronte Chown on a wonderful achievement!

Our Very Own Business Leader
Meg Austin, Jo Balcombe and Victoria Patterson at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Canowindra Trifecta at Sydney Royal Easter Show
This year Canowindra was well represented at the Sydney Royal Easter Show with many locals competing at the event. Young Joanna Balcombe won the Junior Judging in the meat sheep category, which is a tremendous achievement at such a high level of competition. “It is an honour to receive this and it is good to see my improvements over the years as I have been doing this for a while now,” Joanna said. The junior judges were required to judge the lambs in 8 minutes and place them in order. 9 people were then chosen to speak in front of an audience about why they placed them in that order. Jo will now compete at Nationals at the Melbourne Royal Show in September and is looking to continue her interest in agriculture by studying on further at university with a Bachelor of Agriculture. Kinellar White Suffolk and Poll Dorset Stud had the winning trifecta, winning Grand Champion White Suffolk Ram, first

in Pair of Rams White Suffolk and first in Sires Progeny Group. “It is such a great achievement and is really the pinnacle of what the stud has done,” Brett Douglas said. With a number of other wins Kinellar stud are now looking to the next big event. “Dubbo show will be next, it’s NSW biggest sheep show and we are hoping to win Supreme Champion again,” Brett Douglas said. Canowindra's Showgirl Meg Austin was also competing at the Royal Easter Show in the State Showgirl competition. “I couldn’t be prouder to represent the Canowindra Community,” Meg Austin said. Meg was kept very busy over the weekend attending official showgirl events at the Children’s Westmead Hospital, Government House and events at the show throughout the day. A massive congratulations to everyone for representing Canowindra so well!

Coming into the cooler months there is nothing better than holding a nice warm cup of coffee. Two new shops have opened near Canowindra and they are unique, delightful and cosy. One of the best kept secrets in the area is a little shop that opened in Cargo mid January this year, Timber Tales. Carmen McNab, the young lady who runs the show, has been looking for a place to open a coffee bar and gift shop in Central West NSW for a while now. Her late husband Murray was a Canowindra boy, that’s why her heart is knitted to the area, she says. “Before Christmas last year I worked for a few months at a coffee shop in Longreach QLD. Man, I missed the hills. Any hills! But I learned to appreciate living and working in a small country community. Back to basics where people are friendly, give a helping hand when needed, love their dogs and farming toys and only get stressed when the wife can’t back a trailer!” Carmen laughed. Exploring the Cabonne area Carmen fell in love with the old General Store in Cargo, a gem from 1879. “I called it Timber Tales because there is a lot of wood in here, it is a warm material and welcoming and I feel everything here tells a story. The old wooden floor boards, the original front counter, old mate getting a cuppa on the way to a clearing sale,” Carmen said. Walking through the old entrance door will give you the feeling of being taken back in time. Besides yummy cakes and freshly roasted coffee, Timber Tales sells a selection of unique giftware, local produce, art & craft and handmade recycled furniture by Rustic Notions.

Jodie and Keiran of 2 Sugars Espresso Bar in Cowra
“My favorite time of the day is early mornings when the town is waking up. I open at 7 and start getting my regular customers now which is great, often they ring on their way to work and their coffee will be waiting for them when they come through Cargo.” Just a short drive to Cowra you will find another hidden treasure. Recently opening its doors is 2 Sugars Espresso. An inner city Melbourne/Sydney vibe with good old fashioned country service and hospitality. Owners Keiran and Jodie felt a need for a café at this end of Cowra for those early morning risers. “We have a fresh take on takeaway. You won’t get a hamburger or chips here but you will get freshly prepared meals,” Jodie said. 2 Sugars Espresso bake everything fresh and daily using in season produce and catering to the weather conditions on the day. "We use fresh local produce and cater to seasonal weather and conditions. Therefore avoiding a stagnant but ever changing and exciting menu." Keiran and Jodie have sought far and wide to source the best quality coffee beans. Cleanskin coffee from Brisbane where the perfect fit as they only accept the top 10% of coffee beans imported into Australia, to ensure the best quality for their customers. To accompany the perfect coffee select a homemade good with vegetarian and gluten free options available. As you walk in door in the early hours of the morning be greeted with the fresh aroma of ground coffee, baked goods in the oven and a friendly smile, you will immediately feel warm and at home at 2 Sugars Espresso. Volunteers Come To Canowindra
The Big Lift a volunteering organisation at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) have been paying it forward to rural communities including Canowindra. The Big Lift brought 10 students to Canowindra over the weekend to volunteer at the Public School assisting the P&C with the installation of an outdoor teaching space, tidying pathways and installing blinds in the school kitchen. They then set off to Canowindra's Community Garden to assist in a number of gardening tasks such as planting and weeding. “The aim of the weekend trip was to allow our students to reflect back on the concept of ‘community’ and what it means to them. Many of our students agreed that it was fascinating to see how much loyalty and support was present in the upkeep of the community garden and public school and that support at this level is a lot harder to see in the city,” Communications Director Adam Wilson said. The student run volunteer organisation offers a unique learning experience by helping out rural communities where help is needed the most. “Our aim is to inspire and show students how easy, fun and rewarding it is to give back to others, provide an opportunity to develop a sense of civic duty and leader-
ship; connect city and international students with other parts of Australia and to discover and learn more about the country and its people; allow students to meet new, diverse and yet like-minded people; and allow students to challenge and personally develop themselves” Adam Wilson said. All of the volunteers thoroughly enjoyed their experience and stay in Canowindra. “We would all love to come back! The trip was an incredible success.” The group of Volunteers said. On behalf of the Canowindra community thank you for making a difference in rural communities including our own.

Celebrate Easter Your Way Easter is celebrated throughout the world in so many different ways and there is no right or wrong way to do it. For Aussies it is often the first school holiday break since Christmas so families take the opportunity to get away. Whether the holiday period is spent going to church, searching for Easter Eggs, spending time with family or lamb marking for some families on the land. Many hands make light work dads always seem to say. In Sweden their Easter is much like Halloween as they dress up as Easter witches, in Corfu Greece they have a tradition of ‘Pot Throwing’ where they take pots and pans and throw them out their windows smashing them on the streets. In Florence, Italy a wagon is dragged through the streets by a white oxen until it reaches the Cathedral. Bulgaria have egg fights and in Germany they display their Easter eggs on trees. You choose how to celebrate this Easter.

Taneil Thornberry with Skydiveoz instructor Casey as they jump out of a plane at 14,000ft.
Those Who Don’t Jump Will Never Fly! Skydiving is an experience like no other and our journalist Taneil gave flying a go. Jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane isn’t on everybody’s bucket list, but it should be! Time stands still as you float above ground 14,000ft up in the air, taking the world in from a complete new perspective. Adrenaline fills your body and you literally feel like you are floating on cloud nine. As you tumble through free fall for about 60 seconds this would have to be the most exhilarating experiences you can have. Falling through clouds, plummeting towards the ground of speeds up to 300km/ hr until finally the parachute takes flight and pulls you back up to a place of tranquility as you look to the horizons in complete awe. “Hands down the best experience I have ever had! The adrenaline is one thing but the pure beauty and being able to see the countryside from a different perspective is
probably what I loved the most." said Taneil. Skydiveoz are one of the best in the business and are an experience you can trust. They have Australia’s highest skydives, over 20 locations available and 28 years of experience. “Skydiveoz were beyond amazing! They made sure I felt comfortable, safe and laughing at all times. I think my jaw was sore from smiling so much,” Taneil laughed. Fear does a funny thing to us and often holds us back from experiencing some truly amazing things. Skydiving is one of those! “Of course I was scared leading up to it but I feel that it is often the things that we are scared of the most are usually things that we should give a go and I am so glad that I did!” said Taneil

Understanding Strata Property Part 2 Last month we looked into the history of strata units, this month we will touch on some of the changes made in 2016 to NSW Strata Laws. As a quarter of NSW's population live in, owns or manages strata property it is worth being aware of the changes. There have been up to 90 changes the ones that caught my eye are: • For owners to sell the strata block to developers only 75% of owners are required to vote for a proposal rather than the old model which allowed only one dissenting owner stopping development. • The new “model” by-laws are more pet friendly. • Owner's corporations will be able to clamp down on problem car parking, being able to make arrangements with local council parking rangers to patrol their car parks. • Owner's corporations will be able to move cars parked illegally on common property to a place where parking is allowed. • Smoke from smoking has been defined as a nuisance, it will be easier for residents to make a complaint about smoke drift from another apartment. • Owner corporations will be able to pass by-laws setting maximum limits on the number of people living in a unit to prevent overcrowding, no more units with 20 students living in them. The laws will bring strata living into the 21st century allowing owners and residents to deal with modern problems whilst giving owners more freedom to develop their properties avoiding the historical restrictions caused by only one or two residents who refused to agree with the majority of owners. OUR Bloke Brought to you by Blowes CLothing...Helping Blokes Look Good in Orange, Mudgee, Bathurst & Dubbo
James Rodgers How long have you lived in the area and what do you like about living here? 10 years in the Orange area and 6 years around Cargo. The people, the climate, the location, the Cargo Store, the Cargo Pub the new coffee shop in Cargo. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work on my Farm and I like being my own boss. What do you do to unwind after work or on the weekends? In the winter we make homemade Salami but you can't beat the Cargo pub for family dinners with friends. What are you really good at? Talking and random useless facts. If you could have a super power what would it be? To see into the future to find out next week's Lotto numbers! Best holiday you have been on? Skiing in France for a season and spending a year traveling around Australia. What is your pet hate. "FANs" which is a person whose First Answer is No, without thinking of a way to actually do what you are asking.

Get Maximum Returns With Tax Depreciation What is tax depreciation? Tax depreciation occurs when a building gets older and items are subjected to normal wear and tear. As this happens, they depreciate in value. The Australian Tax Office (ATO) governs legislation that allows owners of income producing property to claim a tax deduction for this wear and tear. A tax depreciation schedule is required to maximise the depreciation claims available and to substantiate these claims in a tax return. A depreciation schedule prepared by a specialist quantity surveyor helps to ensure that you are maximising the cash return from your investment property each financial year. Depreciation benefits vary depending on the type of building, its age, its use and its fit out. Commercial, industrial and residential investment properties can all claim depreciation based on either the diminishing value or prime cost methods of depreciation. To ensure that property owners can claim the maximum deductions each financial year, each schedule may include deductions for capital works and the plant and equipment depreciating assets for the ATO specified lifetime of the property - (40 years). Many investors throw out items without understanding that they may claim tax benefits on these materials at 100% of its written down value in the year of disposal. Investors have to undertake a depreciation report for the property as near as to the date of purchase as possible to qualify for any tax benefits. By using a company that works directly with the ATO, you can ensure all items are properly listed in the schedule to make it simple and concise for your tax return. Ray White Real Estate Cowra would be delighted to assist in your current or future purchases and strive to achieve the maximum return on your investment— call us today.
