2016 Anzac Day wreaths and commemorations.

Standing Together As A Nation

Anzac Day held on the 25th April is one of the most important national occasions in Australia, as it marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by the Australian and New Zealand forces. Soldiers quickly became known as the ANZACs standing for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. On the morning of the 25th of April the Anzacs landed on Gallipoli with the objective to capture Constantinople (now Istan-

bul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany. As the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli they were met with fierce resistance from Turkish defenders. What was meant to knock Turkey out of the war quickly soon dragged out to be an eight-month campaign. Australia’s involvement in the First World War began on 4th August, 1914. There were 26,111 Australian casualties including 8,141 deaths.

ISSUE 436

Among the soldiers there were also many sailors, nurses and airmen who did not return to Australia after battle. The courage and sacrifice made on this day brought a new maturity to the Australian nation and that is why we continue to remember those who fought for our country. Many who joined saw the war as a great opportunity to see the world, with many believing it would be a great adventure. However they could have never imagined the endeavor they would embark on nor the horrors they would endure. Today we mark the occasion with national remembrance. Commemorative services take place throughout Australia at dawn to represent the original time of landing of the soldiers. The half-light of dawn was a favoured time for launching an attack so soldiers would be woken in the dark to ensure by the time they reached the battlefield they were awake and alert. Later in the day commemorative marches are held with former servicemen and servicewomen. During and after the First World War communities would gather on this day to mourn and remember, over time this day became a time of national remembrance. War has and will continue to touch the lives of all Australians either directly or indirectly, and through this day of remembrance we can continue to shed light on the sacrifices and commitment made by those who hold the security and welfare of a nation ahead of their own.

Bob Bates

The Navy

Bob Bates followed in his two older brothers footsteps by joining the Navy at the age of 17. “I thought I’d better join up after my brothers. I spent 6 years and 10 months in the Navy so 1953-1960.” Bob was 14 when he left school where he worked in a sawmill before joining the Navy 3 years later. “I was a Seaman which is an upper deck man. I was responsible for underwater weapons. I first went to Japan; we had to go up there as peacekeepers after the Korean War. We left here on the 19th January 1955. Then on the way back to Australia we did the Malayan campaign.” Bob travelled all over the place visiting Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaya, Honolulu, Philippines, Fiji, Solomon Islands and New Zealand. “You see a lot of the world, it’s a good life for a young bloke.” Bob spoke about the characters he met along the way and said they certainly had a bit of fun. “It was a terrific life, we got looked after pretty well. I did my time and had a good time.” After the Navy Bob went into truck driving for 18 months before starting his trade as a carpenter. “I started my trade at the end of 1962 and only gave it up 18 months ago.” Bob originally came from Wee Waa and moved to Canowindra in 1979 to help his wife Dorothy’s father and he has been here ever since. “I am just about a local now.”

Ian Mcllvain joined the RAAF in 1964 when he was 21 years old and he got out in 1998 when he retired. “I was in the RAAF for 34 years, I first started with a trade in electronics. I was ultimately promoted to supervisory roles.” Ian worked his way through the ranks over the years to eventually become warrant officer for 15 years. In the early days Ian started in aircraft maintenance then worked his way up through the ranks being logistic support, identifying and providing spares to units and senior technical officer. “The unit I was in delivered the first air force hot air balloon so I have been involved with balloons for a while now, since 1990. I have flown every Martis and have my own balloon.” Ian spent 3 years in Malaysia where he was posted doing maintenance. 2 years in Papua New Guinea conducting instructional duties and 12 months in the Sanai Desert in Egypt on a peacekeeping force as a supervisor for electronic trades. “It was interesting working on many different aeroplanes. Some of the first aircrafts had French manuals; lucky I had studied French in school and could work it out. The mate ship and support was great. Other people relied on you and their lives depended on it. It was a challenging job with technology advances and constantly having to keep up with the times.” Ian moved to Canowindra in 2005 and was drawn to this area because of the friends he had here and the ballooning.

Ian McIlvain

Ken Perry

The Army

Ken Perry did National Service from 19711973, then Army Reserve from 1978-1984. “I got called up when I was 20 years old as apart of the ballot. My intake was one of the last 2-year intakes. I first went to boot camp where they taught you to stop thinking like a civilian and start thinking like a soldier. When the commanding officer gave us the introductory speech he started off by saying, gentlemen by Christmas 2/3 of you will be in Vietnam, this was in July 1971.” Kens first choice was infantry as soldiers saw it as a fast track to Vietnam. “We all wanted to go because everybody else was there, our mates had all been and we didn’t want to let our mates down. We believed at the time that what we were doing in Vietnam was right. We wanted to give other countries the opportunities that we had.” When Ken finished with infantry training he got posted to the 7th Royal Australian Regiment in admin call. Ken then spent 6 years in the Army Reserve in the 4th Prince of Wales Light Horse A squadron. “I learnt how to drive armament personal carriers and learnt several other weapons. The best thing was the companionship, particularly in the Army Reserve as you mingle with your officers more. ” Ken’s father was also in the army as an anti aircraft pigeon shooter who went to Papua New Guinea during the war and felt in a way he was following in in his fathers’ footsteps.

A glorious morning for the first day of competition. Photo by Farmpix Photography.

Ready, Set, Fly!

The Canowindra International Balloon Challenge has officially taken flight and will continue until the 25th of April. “On behalf of Canowindra Challenge Inc I would like to welcome all participants, volunteers and visitors to Canowindra,” said Chairman Graham Kerr. Balloons will be launching bright and early at 6.30am and then again in the afternoon from 3.30-4pm each day for the next week. Flights can take up to 2 hours so there is plenty of time to get a glimpse in. “Some of the world’s best hot air balloon pilots will be participating in this year’s event, which continues to grow in status on the international ballooning calendar,” said Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper. Daily announcements and flight details will be at the Canowindra Showground at 5.50am and at the Sports Trust Oval at

6am and 3.30pm. After the announcements spectators are encouraged to follow the balloons and watch as they drop their markers. Everyone is reminded to be conscious of road safety and please do not touch any marker as it may interfere with the competition. One of the highlights this year is the Key Grab, where balloonists fly in to snatch the key mounted on a flagpole. There is a small exclusion zone around the pole and those who retrieve the key win a substantial prize. Other competition tasks include the Hare and Hounds, Fly On and the Judge Declared Goal. Good luck to all pilots and crew competing in this years International Balloon Challenge!

You can feel the excitement building up for this year’s Canowindra International Challenge hot air ballooning festival. The Challenge will be held from 18-25 April and promises to be bigger and better than ever. If that’s the case it will be a special event because we’ve seen thousands flock to the Challenge in recent years, particularly for the spectacular light and fire show of the balloon glow on Saturday 22 April. Cabonne Council has been proud to be a major sponsor of the festival for a number of years. As in previous years, we have allocated $20,000 from our Events Assistance Program to the Challenge. With the festival regularly injecting more than $1 million into the Canowindra and Cabonne economy each year, it is a very sound investment. This event continues to go from strength to strength every year, becoming one of the most significant on the State’s tourism calendar. Some of the world’s best hot air balloon pilots will be participating in this year’s Challenge, demonstrating that it is grow-

ing in status on the international ballooning calendar. However, we must remember the success of events such as the Canowindra Challenge doesn’t happen by accident. The organising committee and volunteers have worked incredibly hard and devoted countless hours of their own time to make this a flagship event that puts Canowindra and Cabonne Country well and truly on the tourism map, not only in Australia but internationally. I look forward to seeing everybody at the Canowindra Challenge, particularly at the balloon glow and night markets which, I am certain, will be another night to remember. Cr Ian Gosper Mayor of Cabonne

What are your plans for Anzac Day and how do you remember?

Wendy Cassidy: I love to see the veterans marching with pride and the children who learn and hear about Anzacs on the day.

Fran Wheeler: I don’t go to the service but I think about it all day. My father was in the war and used to go to the service all the time.

Duo Derek and Jan at the Sky High Exhibition in front of one of Derek's paintings.

Intimate And Local Art Exhibition

Canowindra Art Inc have another successful exhibition with the theme ‘Sky High’ being very fitting to coincide with the Canowindra Balloon Challenge event. The official opening of the exhibition kicked off over the weekend and will remain open to the public until the 25th April. “It was a smaller opening which was great as we got to speak to those who really support the artists,” said Derek Maitland Vice Chairman Canowindra Arts Inc. This is the 3rd art exhibition for the nonprofit group and is just the beginning. “We started off with 8 artists and we now have 19. We want to promote and restore the interest in art and create a flourishing cultural centre,” said Derek. The next exhibition will be in October at the same time as Baroquefest. “The new theme will be reflections and it should be the mother of all exhibitions. We have it alongside Boroquefest as people who have an interest in classical music gen-

erally have a love for art too,” Derek said. Arthur Falconer Chairman of Canowindra Art Inc along with Derek Vice Chairman have together been working on putting this together for over a year now to create an art centre. Eventually the organisation would like to start doing workshops to create a community around art. Whether you want to learn or develop your skills further. Derek Maitland along with his wife Jan O’Neil both have artworks in the exhibition and together transform pieces into beautiful art. “It is something we are both able to share. We have worked together in a camera team before travelling around the world but we needed something more than that,” said Derek. Both Derek and Jan are photographers and say they are both still very competitive but really admire one another’s work and ability.

The Canowindra Senior Pythons held a meeting last week to discuss forging ahead as a social club for 2017 after not forming a team for the Graincorp Cup, due to lack of numbers. The Pythons are currently in the process of forming a social committee and plan on continuing to raise money throughout the year for the club including the Junior Pythons and Pythonetties. Jack Beath said, “We still plan on supporting the community with the bus facilities and through other fundraisers.” The Club are also currently seeking any ladies who would like to be involved to help coordinate events throughout the year. “We will be running bus trips, nights at the Rugby Clubhouse and plans for a golf/ bowls day is hopefully in the pipe line,” said Jack. Kicking off the first event for the year the Pythons will be taking the bus to Bedgerabong races. The Bedgerabong races will be held on the 29th of April with the first race commencing at 1 pm. The Rugby Club will be running a bus out to the races and back after the races finish. The cost for the bus will be $20 to cover fuel and it is BYO for the bus trip out and back. The bus will leave Canowindra at 11:30am Saturday morning. For more details call Jack Beath on 0418 757 289.

Compliment Your Home

When you walk into a room you want something that stands out and grabs your attention. Something that creates a talking point and can be the centre piece of a room. The idea of having a feature wall is to make it the focal point of the room while tying in other aspects of your home. This can be cleverly done with colour, pattern or texture. Feature walls can be your chance to experiment and push your boundaries. To add warmth to a room timber can be the perfect compliment as it can create unity if matched with the flooring or it could be made to stand out. To create a fun or a bold statement use the perfect paint as it can provide layers and depth to your home.

Spice up your life by using a pattern or wallpaper as your feature wall. Wallpaper can give you the flare you are looking for and make your guests look twice. Exposed brick is currently on trend bringing a more rustic look into your home. Other simple ideas to try include; mix and match retro tiles, wall stickers and photo murals.

Hello Readers, Welcome to this month’s column. Hope you all had a really wonderful Easter with lots of visitors and Easter eggs. We’ve had a couple of very busy weeks here at Montrose House with lots of visitors and four functions at the house. I had a wonderful week away in Sydney doing a couple of cabaret shows for the Women’s Refuges with some of my show business friends. We raised lots of money to keep these homes open to suffering women and children. On Friday 7th April, in conjunction with Canowindra Lions Club and Seniors Week, we hosted a beautiful ‘Royal’ luncheon for our local seniors. The room was dressed in royal purples and lots of rabbits. A beautiful 2 course meal was served with tea, coffee and chocolates. Lion, Ron Cain and committee did a wonderful job and everyone attending enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Mary Finn and her family celebrated her brother Ed’s birthday on Sunday 9th April with a beautiful blue themed luncheon in the ‘Southampton Room’. The lovely family thoroughly enjoyed this special family lunch organised by matriarch Mary. Easter Saturday 15th April, Pam McNabb and hubby had a superb family dinner to celebrate their wedding anniversary with all their family joining in the festivities. A scrumptious dinner was served with a patty cake display for their anniversary cake. What a lovely celebration for this gorgeous couple, congratulations. Balloon week this week so lots of visitors. I am also doing a big cabaret show at the Services Club on Friday night to raise money for autism, hopefully it’s a big success for this truly worthy cause. Don’t forget to get your tickets from the Phoenix office. Plenty of things to do for visitors with the Balloon Glow, dinners, art exhibition and market stalls so welcome to the gorgeous village of Canowindra and get to know our locals. We are very friendly and happy to show you around. Take care of yourselves, Love Tommy xx

Aussie Traditions On Anzac Day

As we all gather together to remember on Anzac Day there are a few traditions that we continue to do each year. Drinking rum in the early hours of the morning would normally be frowned upon with the exception of Anzac Day. Also known as the gunfire breakfast, the tradition stemmed from the British military, as they would serve milk, tea or coffee with a shot of rum to the soldiers. Next up is two up. The game dates back to the 1850’s and was played during World War I by Australian soldiers. The game works by having a ‘Spinner’ in the crowd who throws two coins in the air and players gamble on how they will fall. Two heads up means the Spinner wins, two tails means the Spinner loses, one of each and the Spinner throws again. Anzac Biscuits are often baked for the occasion even though they aren’t the traditional biscuit eaten by soldiers. The biscuit most of us know as the Anzac biscuit with rolled oats and golden syrup is very different to the ones that soldiers once ate. The original hard biscuit was used as a nutritional substitute for bread. The biscuits became notorious as the supply of fresh food and water was difficult to maintain. On Anzac Day you will often see people wearing rosemary. Rosemary is tradition-

ally worn for remembrance as this aromatic herb is found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula. A fairly new tradition to the day is the Anzac Day Football. Whether it be AFL or NRL both sports hold an Anzac match. The game is to bring people together and to show teamwork, skill and courage on the sporting field. Regardless of what traditions you choose to celebrate be sure to remember what the day is all about.
