Anzac Day march down Gaskill Street.
Lest We Forget
On a cold and wet ANZAC Day, Canowindra residents came out in support to attend the Dawn Service, ANZAC March and Memorial Service. Over 100 people gathered on Gaskill St to watch the local Pre School, Primary Schools, High School and many Community Groups march alongside the ex-servicemen and women who have served and servicemen and women who are still serving our country today. 2017 marked the 102nd anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. War has and will continue to touch the lives of all Australians either directly or indirectly, and through ANZAC Day we can continue to shed light on the sacrifices and commitment made by those who hold the security and welfare of a nation ahead of their own.
SAT 6 MAY, 7:00PM
Ex-Serviceman Chris Hodder was the guest speaker at the Memorial Service at 11am in Memorial Park and he spoke about being so pleased to see so many young people marching and attending the services in Canowindra. He then went on to speak of the mateship and heroism shown by the ANZACs. In the tiny hamlet of Toogong just north of Canowindra several hundred attended a beautiful Dawn Service watching the sunrise over the paddocks and listening to an interesting address by Reverend Ian Lambert, Anglican Bishop to the Australian Military. The day was then capped off with a traditional beer or rum with mates at the Canowindra Ex-Services Club.

You are invited to the Bicentenary of Oxley’s 1817 Expedition to be held on Saturday 29th April. The Canowindra Historical Society & Museum Inc. are celebrating the occasion as part of the Central NSW Regional Museums’ Events program. The Lachlan River was named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie by its European discoverer, Assistant Surveyor George Evans. George reached it on the 27th May 1815 downstream from Cowra on the first expedition inland after the founding of Bathurst. In December 1816, William Cox, famed for building the road over the Blue Mountains, was charged with establishing a Depot for the first fully equipped expedition into the interior of New South Wales. This Depot overlooking the Lachlan near today’s Merriganowry Bridge was guarded by a detachment of soldiers of the 46th Regiment. Five months provisions were brought to the site, two small boats constructed and a collection of plant life made before the party set out on 27th April 1817. Surveyor General John Oxley led the party accompanied by Assistant Surveyor George Evans, King’s Botanist Allan Cunningham and Colonial Botanist Charles Fraser. The Depot remained with its military guard, expecting the party to return by the same route but floodwaters forced a return via the Wellington Valley. The thirteen men reached Bathurst on 29th August and the Depot was disbanded. It was the first semi-permanent European settlement on the Lachlan and its location became known as Soldiers Flat. There will be a history talk at the Canowindra Services Club at 10.30am for 11am start on Saturday 29th April. Guest Speaker will be John Whitehead of Coonabarabran. Entry by donation.

CANOWINDRA BALLOON GLOW The 2017 Canowindra Balloon Glow was a stunning success over the weekend with record crowds for a truly international event. I along with thousands of others had a terrific time! Congratulations to Graham and Jan Kerr, along with their organising team and the hundreds of volunteers on a job well done. Special mention must also go to Cabonne Council and Destination NSW for their support of this magnificent event. This event continues to grow each year and I am already looking forward to next year. PROTECTING AUSTRALIAN JOBS AND CITIZENSHIP BASED ON AUSSIE VALUES The Federal Government has announced that the 457 Visa program for foreign workers will be scrapped and replaced with a new temporary visa restricted to critical skills shortages. While there is no doubt that foreign workers have played an integral role in the growth of our nation, this will guarantee that Australian workers are given first priority for jobs. Changes have also been announced for the Citizenship Test, putting Australian values at the heart of our migration policy, including better background checks to weed out criminals, requirements to pass a standalone English test, a new and meaningful questions that assess an applicant’s understanding of Australian values, steps the application has taken to integrate and contribute to Australian community and an automatic fail for applicants who cheat the test. People who don’t support our democracy should not be allowed in. CANOWINDRA BOWLING CLUB I recently became a member of this great club and am looking forward to rolling a few down as soon as I get a chance! ADVERTISEMENT

Meet The Pilots
Canowindra's skies have been full of Balloons over the past week with a total of 25 Balloons flying throughout the event. Often when we look to the skies we pick them out by the colours, however it should be by the pilots as they come from all over the world. Chatting to a few of the pilots we found out what they enjoy the most about coming to Canowindra. “It’s an interesting place to fly, the winds are always different and everyone is very friendly,” Fiesta pilot Paul Britliff said. Paul is from the Hunter Valley and owns one of the newest and most colourful balloons in the sky. “I bought my own balloon in December and designed it myself,” said Paul. Paul worked with Balloon Aloft for 16 years as a crew man but now has 22 hours of flying under his belt. Paul has been coming to the event for years. “I would stay up there all day if I could and we really appreciate all of the friendly farmers here, “ said Paul. Owners of Balloon Aloft Judy and Graeme Scaife have been flying for years and came along to this year’s event to watch Clement Siegot take out the win. “It’s an interesting lifestyle, I’ve been flying since 1986. We love the people, not just flying and the adventure that comes with it,” Judy said. Judy and Graeme live in England for half of the year then in the Hunter Valley and Sydney running Balloon Aloft. Both have enjoyed their stay in Canowindra and were reminded of previous memo-
ries here. “In 1988 we came to Canowindra and celebrated at the Royal after a 16 day flight, we love it here and the characters we meet. It’s a team sport for everyone, the locals help out and everyone participates, ” said Judy. Lauren Allen came out to the event as a student pilot from the Blue Mountains and completed her first solo flight last Friday morning. “I have been around crewing and I was kind of born into it,” Lauren said. Laurens instructor is Phil, owner of Kavanagh Balloons. “Phil was one of the first Pilots in Australia and is the only balloon manufacturer here. His son is the number 2 balloon who is competing in the event. You will notice that his balloon is a different shape known as the racer shape, specifically designed for competition," Lauren said.

It is that time of the year again where farmers in the district are busy lamb marking. Lambs should be marked between the ages of two to 12 weeks old. The term tail docking is referred to as placing a rubber ring on the tail of the lamb and is recommended by the Code of Practice for Sheep for blowfly control. Lambs can be restrained either by cradle or by hand. During lamb marking rings are also expanded with a special plier and placed over the scrotum, just above the testicles. The ring blocks blood circulation causing the scrotum and testicles to eventually fall off along with the tail. Throughout lamb marking it is advised to use insecticide when necessary to further help prevent fly strike and use antiseptic to sterilize all equipment used. During lamb marking farmers often inject the lambs with 5 in 1 Vaccine for the prevention of pulp kidney, an injection of scabby mouth to help prevention from the disease, a drench to help prevent worms and an ear tag to help with identification when sold. Lambs are marked to help with farm management and for the market. Operators lamb marking need to be experienced in the operation and follow the required guidelines. Information sourced from the Department of Primary Industries.

RURAL ROUNDUP Ideal Conditions For Canola Farmers around the region are very happy with the recent rain making it perfect for sowing canola and the early varieties of wheat. “Based on last years yields low protein we can expect the nitrogen profile to be quite low so be sure to pay good attention to soil tests and think about sowing with applied nitrogen in case we run into dry weather,” said Brad O’Riley Canowindra Produce Agronomist. Canola and early varieties of wheat are planted from late April up until early May being the ideal sowing time. Other varieties of wheat will then be sown, as it is the ideal flowering time. There is a recommended depth of 2-4cm when sowing but is very dependent on the seed type. “Smaller seeds such as canola are usually sown quite shallow and closer to the surface. We don’t expect moisture to be a problem this year with a brilliant start to the season so far,” said Brad O’Riley. Farmers are advised to keep an eye out on their crops around June for mites and look to spray broadleaf herbicides. Canola is a popular crop in the Central West with ideal conditions allowing for a good yield. Australia produces approximately 2-3 million tonnes of oilseed each year with canola and cottonseed making up 90% of that.
Terrain Now Registered For Lucerne Weed Control
Nufarm delivers the pinnacle in lucerne weed control with Terrain, a unique and versatile group G Herbicide that is ideally suited for lucerne weed and fenceline control, providing residual control or suppression of 17 hard to kill weeds. Applied early, Terrain delivers excellent, economical residual weed control of a range of broadleaf and grass weeds including annual ryegrass, flaxleaf fleabane and sowthistle. Terrain is a non-volatile, UV stable herbicide that can remain on the soil surface for up to three weeks. Rainfall is required during this period to incorporate Terrain into the soil. Once incorporated by rainfall, Terrain binds tightly to the top layer of soil, forming a concentrated band of protection. As Terrain binds tightly to soil and is not translocated by roots, Terrain has excellent safety to trees and adjacent crops. For optimum efficacy with Terrain, soil coverage is critical. Application on bare earth, with a small amount of rainfall or irrigation to incorporate is required. Terrain should be applied in a tank mixture with either Shirquat 250 or Revolver to control weeds that have already emerged. Terrain is a new mode of action residual herbicide with up to 16 weeks residual control. Terrain works best as an Autumn cleaning application prior to the main germination of weeds.

Sydney Conservatorium Of Music Returning To Canowindra Canowindra will soon come alive with classical music at the All Saints Church, Saturday 6th May 2pm. David Miller AM, Director of Ensemble Studies at Sydney Conservatorium of Music is returning to Canowindra for the 20th annual visit along with students. Six graduate and post-graduate students will play on Saturday May 6th, some of whom now hold positions with prestigious orchestras and ensembles throughout the world. This year's group will be playing a variety of instruments including a tenor, clarinet, piano, flute, cello and guitar. Repertoire pieces will be selected from Beethoven, Handel, Schumann, Mozart, Rossini, Faure, SaintSaens, Sculthorpe, Piazzolla, Grainger plus songs from My Fair Lady, South Pacific and Man of La Mancha. There is definitely something for all tastes! “Most of this year's group commenced their musical studies as toddlers, much like most famous musicians throughout the ages. They already have huge collective achievements performing with orchestras and ensembles throughout Australia and overseas. The pianist Kai Yin Chen, currently studying under celebrity pianist Stephanie McCallum at Sydney began in Guangzhau at age 4,” said organiser Richard Statham.
The group of musicians will be staying as guests of The Royal Hotel. Proprietors Stephanie and John Watson are regular supporters of fine music in Canowindra. After the concert at Canowindra some of the musicians will play at the opening of the Calleen Art Award Exhibition at Cowra Art Gallery. If any concert goers would like to join them for dinner at The Royal Hotel around 8pm on Saturday 6th May, they will be most welcome. Please book with the Royal Hotel on 6344 1201. Tickets are $25 per person and can be booked in advance by phoning 0429443215. If the concert is not fully booked, they can be purchased at the door.

Back Roads ABC
Back Roads an ABC series was in town last week to film a segment on Canowindra. A busy week with Gaskill Street bustling with people and a sky full of balloons. In traditional Canowindra style locals banded together to put on a Ben Hall re-enactment to give them a bit of our local history. Ben Hall held up the Royal Hotel last Tuesday taking us back in time when horses galloped down the Main Street. Be sure to keep an eye out on ABC Back Roads for the series on Canowindra!

How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I have lived here for 6yrs, since I was 3, my family have been here for generations. I like the country, its nice and quiet here. There’s less bad people around and there are no traffic lights!! My dad hates traffic lights!! Where do you go to school and what do you enjoy about school? I go to St Edwards Canowindra and I like playing with all my friends and enjoy mathematics. What do you do for fun on the weekends? This week I helped crew for team Anton in the balloon competition, which was fun. I like to go to the skate park, horse ride at home and I play a lot of sport. What are you really good at? I think that I’m good at swimming, tennis and rugby and I got a math’s award at school last year and this year. What did you enjoy most about the balloon glow? The best part of the balloon glow for me was getting to be in the basket of the rainbow colored balloon during the glow with my dad and best mate Oscar Cleary.
COMPUTER Bytes NEW RETAIL OUTLET I have finally settled into the shop with only a bit more sorting to do but its feeling like a great retail outlet and workshop compared to the previous premises. Although I do travel a lot from job to job you can usually contact me on my mobile. In this modern era, we live I am pleased that I can offer so many remote support solutions from nearly anywhere. However, you need to be very cautious of who you allow to access your PC so unless someone is invited in by you or you have arranged a set service please don’t let strangers access your PC. Usually it’s a con job, people from overseas are good at pretending to be from a telco or internet related company. If you are ever unsure contact someone like myself to seek advice fist. 69 Ryall St, Canowindra • P 6344 1605 Congratulations to the Balloon Challenge committee, the volunteers and all involved
Many of us have fully developed gardens or limited space available for adding new trees into our garden. This prompts me to consider the options available to plant small or dwarf trees that are suited to our region and which will be pretty or productive in our gardens. What do I mean by small or dwarf trees? My definition would be that they grow no bigger than 5m high when mature. Some of the trees I mention below would normally grow bigger than 5m, but they are available grafted on to dwarf root stock which will typically halve their mature height. The following small evergreen trees are suited to our region. Magnolia cultivars Teddy Bear and Little Gem are attractive, evergreen, flowering trees growing to 3-5m. There are a wide range of small conifers that are compact and have foliage that contrasts beautifully with other shrubs and trees. Some examples are the dwarf Alberta spruce (Picea glauca conica), several Thuja cultivars (including Orientalis aurea with gold tipped foliage; and Samaragd) and Junipers such as Spartan and Skyrocket. Also, don’t forget our Australian natives such as Grevillias, Banksias, Callistemons and Leptospermums, each of which have cultivars that grow to no more than 2 to 3m and which produce lovely flowers that attract little birds to your garden. As for small deciduous trees, there are lots of options for trees less than 5m and which produce either, eye catching foliage and/or spring flowers, or both! Some examples are the crepe myrtles (cultivars Acoma-white flowers, Tonto-red, Zunilavendar), crabapples (cultivars Ballerina, Gor-geous, Tom Matthews), dogwoods, forest pansy and Japanese maples (check out Atropurpureum and Bonfire). Finally, there is a range of dwarf fruit trees. Junior Pythons Shine The Canowindra Junior Pythons were given a fantastic opportunity to play before the balloon glow on Saturday night. With three teams playing and a record crowd at the Balloon Glow it was a great opportunity for the players to show off their skills. The Cowra Eagles were very supportive and able to gather an Under 9’s and 11’s team to play against our boys. The Under 11’s, who are joining up with the Millthorpe Mozzies, were able to meet for the first time and get a game in before competition starts. Our combined Cowra/Canowindra Under 13’s team had an awesome game against Forbes and did the club proud. Overall, there was a great display of support, teamwork and mateship on the weekend for Rugby Union around the region.

Care From The Heart
When care comes from the heart in aged care, meaningful relationships, powerful engagements and high quality clinical care ensues. The Salvation Army Aged Care Plus, an aged care provider that delivers care to more than 1,700 older Australians annually, understands the power of heartfelt care, and delivers this through the provision of industry leading physical, spiritual and emotional care. Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre in Canowindra welcomes older Australians to the Centre with a commitment to inclusiveness and emotional wellbeing. Centre Manager, Robynne Dresser, and Chaplain, Captain Mark Williamson, believe social engagement is the key to creating a loving home for older Australians. “We want to break down the myths of aged care in the community and bring to light the rich lives our residents lead and celebrate their stories through activities, fun and friendships,” Robynne said. A highlight for the Centre is their annual fete which brings joy and laughter to the residents, their families and the local community with live entertainment, clothing and food stalls, antique car displays and so much more. Proud resident of more than 13 years, Leone Hudson, says the fete is an exciting occasion that she looks forward to for months in advance. “I have been attending the Moyne Fete for as long as I can remember, and it’s never failed to put a smile on my face and satisfy my sweet tooth,” Leone said. This year, the Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre Fete will be held from 9.30am on Saturday 6 May at the Centre located on 161 Nangar Road, Canowindra and all people, young and old, are warmly welcomed to join. If you would like to learn more about the fete or the Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre family, contact Robynne on (02) 6344 1475 or at acp.enquiries@aue.salvationarmy.org

CANOWINDRA SPORT CANOWINDRA TIGERS
Round 3 of the competition the Tigers went up against Grenfell with a hard fought game. The first 6 minutes into the game Grenfell led as Canowindra continued to make mistakes. Canowindra failed to move up in defence allowing Grenfell to run in their third try making the score 16-0. Canowindra finally got a good kick in to get them over the line for the first try of the game in the 24th minute, with Marika Kirkoroivai scoring. As Canowindra gets on a roll they make it over the line again with a successful conversion. In the second half Grenfell came out strong scoring under the goal posts within minutes taking the score to 30-14. As Canowindra struggled to keep up and form together in the second half the final score left them at 64-14. “The boys tried rally hard, we had a number of injuries with Callum Clyburn out for a hamstring and Jayden Brown with a corked thigh. The front row had a great game!” said Barry Traves. Next weeks game will be against Cargo at home ground. Points went to: 3 points and Players Player: Mick Clyburn 2 points: Baily Cain 1 point: Jayden Brown, Aaron Earsman
CANOWINDRA TIGRESSES
The Canowindra Tigresses came up against Grenfell in round 3 of the competition. The final score was 48-0 with Canowindra being on the back foot for most of the game. Great defensive efforts from Keira Whatman, Lisa Bourke and Meg Waters on the day who didn’t give up. Although the score line indicates otherwise, if all the girls can get to training and the little ball handling errors can be eliminated, the Tigresses look fairly promising. 3 points and Players Player: Keira Whatman 2 points: Kristy White 1 point: Mel Frazer.
