Students Conquer Outdoors

A program designed to empower young students, The Duke of Edinburgh Award, saw 23 Canowindra High Students participating for Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. The worldwide program has 8 million participants with 700,000 being from Australia in the past 57 years. Canowindra High School have been participating in the program for four years now, with this year being the first that Canowindra High School have had 3 students go for gold. Julia Stanley, Will Wright and Hamish Gregson will all work to achieve their 52 hours of work in community service, learning a new skill, physical activity and going on a number of overnight hikes. “I think the best thing is that if they can complete a hike, carrying all of their gear on their back, they can do anything! It’s

pretty tough and it gives kids a lot of confidence.” said teacher Andrew Phelan. The most recent hike was out on the Nangar Road where students were required to set up their own camp with a camp fire to cook and keep warm. “A highlight for the most recent hike was when Jamie Austen set up a couple of lines to go yabbing, then later cooking them up for dinner, that was pretty special as some students have never done that before,” Andrew said. To break up the hike students had a canoeing and kayaking lesson from Mark Edwards, as he taught them capsize and rescue drills. The Bronze certificate students then departed the group and Silver and Gold continued on to Cucumber Creek. Continued on page 4

Dear Mayor,

I read with interest your ideas on the re-establishment of rail services though Cowra. If I may be so bold as to offer different overview of what might be achieved to re-building through Cowra-Carcoar to Blayney, you might consider the advantages of building Harden-Cowra-CanowindraEugowra to Parkes. The attached Google Earth image picks out the old right-of-way that ran to Eugowra, where the old proposition of extending on to Forbes or Parkes should be resurrected with the extension going to the main East-West line to pick up the freight gateway to the west and still be able to feed into the east to Sydney. One of the barriers to double deck container traffic would be the tunnel at Carcoar whereas the run through to Parkes is over reasonably flat land without such barriers. Feeding to the west will also allow a direct link into the mooted inland line from Melbourne to Brisbane whatever its eventual path where a transit to Blayney from the south through Cowra would have to be headed west at Blayney to get to the north-south inland

line. It seems reasonable to assume that Parkes will be the rail hub inter-linking all these services so the produce of MurrayGoulburn and actual Goulburn area would feed into the hub distributor along with the Weddin (Young/Cowra) etc. My past experience with Calibre and rail projects says conservatively that about AUD2.5million per kilometer could be a reasonable budget target for either refurbishment or building on this concept. Prospective candidates will be able to nominate from 6pm on 31st July 2017 after the close of rolls for eligible voters. “Forums and workshops for prospective councillors are expected to be conducted prior to the poll and Council will keep you informed when the dates are known.” Mayor Ian Gosper said.

Graham Rice giving us the thumbs up after having a pacemaker put in.

Road To Recovery

As many locals would know Graham Rice had a bit of a scare over the Easter long weekend, although that’s not what he would call it. “I just felt a bit funny during the night, I must have woken up to get a quick eze and I woke up passed out on the floor. I cleaned myself up then just went back to bed,” said Graham. The next day Graham went about his day as usual, opening up the Newsagency and then he went and helped Matt mark lambs. After having another turn Debbie decided it was time to go to the hospital. When at Canowindra Hospital his blood pressure was good, pulse was good and it seemed nothing was wrong with him. “I could then feel another turn coming on and my heart rate dropped from 74 down to 30 and I was unconscious again.” Graham was then sent to Orange to have a temporary pacemaker put in before being transferred to Sydney after his heart stopped twice, the first time for 6 seconds then the second time for 8.2 seconds. “While I was on the plane I saw it flat line for another 2 seconds then the pace maker kicked in. It was a funny thing, every time I had a turn I had a dream. The time I was out for 8.2 seconds it felt like a 10 minute dream, so its funny how the brain works. I didn’t get to the other side he laughed nor did my life flash before my eyes.” As you would know Graham is pretty fit and healthy and always has been from swimming a mile every morning to marathons and triathlons. “I felt sorry for the guy next to me in RPA

who was only 52 and a tradesman, he had a massive heart attack and now has scar tissue on his heart. He will have to change his lifestyle a lot. Where as I am older and a lot better then him and I think the difference would probably come down to smoking.” Graham wanted to make a special thanks to Dr Padma, Laura and Jason and the whole ambulance service. Also to the air ambulance and all of the nurses. “The cooperation and team work between different services was just amazing!” Graham of course made the best of the situation, even having a laugh with the nurses. “Everyone at RPA thought I was a farmer because I came in on the air ambulance and maybe because I was marking lambs. I asked one of the nurses at RPA if she knew what marking lambs is or how you mark lambs and she said with a texta.” Graham laughed. Graham said he is in full health and the pacemaker will help send electrical impulse messages to his heart when it drops again. Graham is on rest for 6 weeks but is definitely not slowing down, with him already riding 25 minutes on the exercise bike.

Julia Stanley received the ‘Bear Grylls’ award for the night after she roughed it in a hammock tied between a fence post and a trailer. The final day of the hike for the Gold participants was the most challenging as they scaled high peaks to finally reach Mt Lewis. Probably the most rewarding hike though, with 360 degree views being pretty spectacular. “This hike was really just a practice as the gold participants will head off on a four day hike of Mt Kosciusko National Park and silver participants will be going on a hike from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves,” said Andrew. The Duke of Edinburgh program allows students to not only make a difference in their communities but to learn skills to overcome barriers in life. The award is set out to challenge young people and to encourage team workout among the students, as a lot of them require a great deal of persistence and determination. “It really develops their confidence and it’s great to see kids getting outdoors and learning new skills.” Andrew said. The Breast Screen Van will be at the

The BreastScreen NSW mobile screening van will be revisiting Canowindra from the 18th to 24th May. The BreastScreen unit will be providing FREE screening mammograms to all women aged 50-74 years old. It has been 2 years since the last visit in 2015, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity and get your breasts checked. Local women are encouraged to make a booking to have a mammogram while the mobile unit is parked at the Canowindra Showground from 18th to 24th May 2017. 1 in 8 women in NSW will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. For women over the age of 50, a screening mammogram is the best way of finding breast cancer early. Breast screening can find cancers before they can be felt or noticed. Despite these figures, only around 1 in 2 women in NSW are receiving their regular mammogram through BreastScreen NSW. Women in the Western NSW Local Health District are being urged to have their regular breast screen even if they have no family history of breast cancer, as 9 in 10 women diagnosed with the disease have no hereditary links. This means that it is absolutely vital that all women aged 50-74 receive their regular two-yearly mammogram. It is a free service that only takes 20 minutes and it could save your life. BreastScreen NSW Health Promotion Of-

ficer, Gillian MacSmith said ‘We had a wonderful response from the Canowindra community to our mobile screening van’s first visit in 2015, and we hope that even more women will have a screening mammogram while the van is at the showground in May this year." A screening mammogram is an x-ray of the breasts for women who have not noticed any symptoms or changes in their breasts. Your appointment will only take up to 20 minutes and the female staff will explain what will happen throughout the whole process. After the x-rays have been taken a doctor will check the x-rays and the results will be sent back to you within 2 weeks of your appointment. A simple check could save your life, a family members or a friend so take advantage of this free service coming to town. Breast cancer is a collection of cells in the breast tissue that grow in an uncontrolled way. If caught early and treatment is undergone you can return to normal life. Signs and symptoms to look for include: a lump, change in shape or size, nipple discharge, changes in breast skin and unusual pain. 9 out of 10 breast changes are not cancer but it is important to see a doctor to be sure. Be sure not to miss the free checkup from the 18th-29th May. The van will be located at the Canowindra Show ground and bookings are recommended.

History At Nyrang Creek

Canowindra and the surrounding villages are bustling with history including Nyrang Creek located about 15km out of town. Albert Ernest Williamson was killed in action at the battle of Fromelles on 20th July 1916, as recorded on Williamsons headstone at Nyrang Creek cemetery. His remains were identified in the last batch of bodies exhumed from the mass burial pit at Fromelles in 2014. Albert was a great uncle of Elizabeth Ann Sasse, being a brother to her fathers’ mother who was Melva Williamson. “My father Albert Ernest Wilcox (now deceased) was named after his deceased uncle. Incidentally my father served five and a half years as a Seargent in the A.I.F during the Second World War,” said Elizabeth Ann Sasse. Returning to civilian life he successfully organically farmed Yeramba on Eugowra Road (Nanami Lane) for over fifty years. The plaque attached to Williamsons headstone gives the following information. Private Albert Williamson Killed in action 20-07-1916 Remains identified 2014 Reinterred Plot 2 Row A Grave 3 Fromelles Military Cemetery “I started corresponding with the Australian Army as soon as I knew the bodies were to be exhumed from the mass grave at Fromelles. There were some problems for the Army in obtaining a male DNA sample from a present day male Williamson, and I was quite surprised to find the matching DNA was supplied by John Williamson of True Blue fame an unknown relative,” said Elizabeth. Albert’s dog tags were forwarded to his mother Cecilia Williamson (nee Brown) a few weeks after he was killed. A German Captain forwarded the dog tags to London and they were then forwarded onto Aus-

tralia. “I would love to know where Albert’s dog tags and other medals are located today,” said Elizabeth.

Sheila Goodacre 26/05/27-15/04/17 We would truly like to thank everyone who assisted our mother Sheila Goodacre over the years. Your genuine care, friendship and concern for mum allowed her to continue to live in her own home in the town she loved. We are extremely grateful to you all. The Goodacre family.

Why Not? Why wait until we get to the other side of winter and feel really terrible to do our makeover? Already with the weather cooling down and being in this Vata season, we feel not as energized as we did during summer. We feel a little heavier, a little crazy in our minds, our digestion isn’t as good as it could be, its harder to get out of bed to commit to our daily exercise and those comfort foods are looking more and more tempting!! So lets do it now! Lets start winter with great habits that are going to support us through this winter. There are three factors that will help you do this. 1. Make Space – The simplest way to do this is to stop. Stop doing whatever is taking your time away from where you want to be. 2. Make a plan – Be realistic and positive. What do you want and what steps do you need to take to do it? 3. Make it Happen – This means commit. Commit to yourself, commit to your health and wellbeing and remind yourself that you are the most important person in your life. And if you don’t think that, I can tell you, nobody else will. You are invited to a free Facebook live event to get you started. “The How-To’s Of Makeover May” Thursday 11th May, 7.30pm. Either at Perfect Heatlh Centre Facebook site or 45 Macquarie St, Cowra. Sign up for the Event or RSVP to the Centre, 6341 1817. Totally free, totally awesome and totally do-able.

How To Create A Better Financial Future

Warren Keedle pointing to where the new facility will be built at the Age of Fishes Museum.

New Fossil Building One Step Closer

Canowindra locals have been anxiously awaiting the new purpose built display at the Age of Fishes Museum to store the bulk of the famous fish fossils and it is one step closer. A representative from the Australian Museum, Branch Manager Life and Geosciences, Cameron Slatyer, will be in Canowindra on today to discuss plans for the building, which will see the full collection of more than 200 fossil slabs brought out of the dark and into full public display. The new display is set to significantly increase visitation with the full collection on display. The scientific community with also benefit from the new development, as it will have a complete examination room. The new facility at this stage will be climate controlled, allow access to every fossil stored, include a scientific workshop for study on the fossils and have an open exhibition area. Cabonne Council and the Australian Museum are currently in consultation to transfer the ownership of the fossils to the

Australian Museum which will provide the collection with heritage listing and registration. It is hoped this will provide better ongoing funding, development opportunities and ultimately security for the groundbreaking discoveries. The Age of Fishes Museum provides an ongoing source of tourism for the Community of Canowindra and surrounding areas with 10,000 people visiting the Museum each year. The Museum perfectly captures and illustrates the remarkable story of the time when air breathing fishes with fins evolved into fishes with feet and our distant ancestors first stepped onto land. One of the most remarkable discoveries of its kind anywhere in the world, many thousands of complete fish specimens remain buried at the original site, awaiting excavation. These could well include other animals new to science and possibly even the skeletal remains of some of the earliest known amphibians, our distant ancestors.

Molong Solar Farm A 100 hectare solar farm, to be built three kilometres north-east of Molong has been welcomed by Cabonne Mayor Ian Gosper. Once completed the solar farm will generate 62,000 MWh of electricity a year, enough to power approximately 10,650 households which is significantly more than the total within Cabonne Shire. The electricity would be fed into the electricity grid providing renewable energy to Molong, Orange and potentially Dubbo. The development process has now been referred to the Joint Regional Planning Panel for assessment and determination. “If the solar farm is approved, it will be great news for Cabonne and the environment,” Cr Gosper said. The development application follows confirmation in September last year that a $109 million solar farm would be built at Manildra, 20 kilometres west of Molong. The location and climate is ideal for the

solar generation industry and it places it perfectly next to power sub stations. Terrain Solar Managing Directors Chris Wilson and Simon Ingram said that, combined with the solar farm being constructed at Manildra, the Molong Solar Farm could help transform the region into a renewable energy hub creating jobs and ongoing opportunities for the local economy. “The solar farm is strategically located in an area of high solar irradiance and temperate conditions making it an ideal climate for solar generation,” they said. “We have been fortunate to partner with a very progressive local community and this project represents our core business mandate which is to work with landowners to bring renewable energy investment into regional areas.” If the development is approved, Terrain Solar hopes to start construction by the end of the year.

Are you happy with your current financial situation? Is your current financial situation so good there’s no room for improvement? If the answer to either question is ‘no’, then there are plans you can put into place that will provide a clear pathway to a better financial future. Deep down, you probably already know you could be making better use of your money, but if you’re like most people the problem is knowing what to do. Everywhere you look there are people trying to sell you products that will magically make more money for you. Here’s the thing… the best person to trust is YOU! DIY money management is the way to make sure that the decisions you make are in YOUR best interests. And the way to make better decisions is better information. As Benjamin Franklin once said: AN INVESTMENT IN KNOWLEDGE PAYS THE BEST INTEREST. When it comes to your money and your financial future, the wiser you are about money, the better financial decisions you’ll make. The higher your financial IQ, the wealthier you’ll be. The more wealth you can create, the more options you and your family will have. Therefore, make financial education your next investment. In the words of motivational speaker Jim Rohn, “Formal education will make you a living. Self-education will make you a fortune.” We know it’s hard to trust anyone when it comes to money, so find out how Wealth Train financial education is empowering people in regional NSW to make better financial decisions at our free information session: DATE: Thursday 25 May, 5.30pm to 6.30pm VENUE: The Old Vic Inn, Canowindra BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL: Please call 0411 484 464 to reserve your place.

Meeting new people and giving them an enjoyable experience is the best With your involvement in the Balloon Challenge what were your roles throughout the event? Too many things but here goes, media, marketing, general dogsbody and most of all annoying everyone each morning and afternoon with commentary over the PA. Trying to help make the magic happen. What did you enjoy most about the Balloon Challenge? Seeing the satisfaction of the pilots, crews, officials, volunteers and visitors as well as the awe and wonder on the children's faces. The most enjoyment is seeing the economic benefit to the town. It makes all the hard work worth it. What are you really good at? Talking What do you do to unwind after work of on the weekends? I like to play Sudoku and Freecell on the computer and I enjoy a quiet glass of red wine with friends. Tell us about your best holiday? Our best holiday was camping in East Arnhem Land and sharing time with Aboriginals in their Homelands crabbing, game fishing, spear fishing at night in crocodile infested waters and attending the Garma Festival.

Debt Recovery

Every business at one time or another will have a customer that will not, cannot or dispute the payment of their debts. Having an effective debt recovery system for your business is essential. Peacockes Solicitors are experienced debt recovery lawyers who can add their expertise to your debt recovery system. Steps to take are as follows: 1. Have a friendly payment reminder system- send invoices quickly and consistently to your customers, include due date for payment and payment options. If an invoice remains unpaid contact the person owing the money with a reminder letter, also phone them. If still no payment or response send the customer a final notice. 2. If not successful then send the debtor a 'letter of demand' which demands payment or commencement of legal action. 3. If the debtor fails to respond legal action is commenced with the court by filing of a 'statement of claim' which is served on the debtor. The amount of the debt will determine which court has jurisdiction for example debts under $10,000 are heard by the Small Claims Division of the Local Court, larger debts are heard by higher courts. 4. The Debtor (defendant) has 28 days to file a defence. At this point the debt may be paid or an agreement negotiated. If no defence is filed, the Creditor (Plaintiff) can seek a default judgment against the Defendant. If a defence is filed the court will adjudicate. Debt recovery can be complex, if you have a debt that is difficult to recoup contact Peacockes.

Canowindra Tigers

Junior Pythons

The Canowindra Tigers played Cargo in the 4th round of the competition on the weekend. Cargo got the first lead making the score 6-0 in the first 7 minutes of the game. Canowindra had good opportunities close the line before scoring under the posts to even the score. Cargo then ran the ball wide in the 21st minute to score again leading 12-6. Canowindra soon came back after running a coupe of good sets of 6. Baily Cain followed a kick through to then score next to the post. Baily also then converted to make the score 12-12 at half time. “There has been a lot more enthusiasm this week and their attitude has turned this side around, there starting to dig deep now.” Barry Traves said. Cargo came out blazing in the second half scoring one after another. The tigers continued to fail to move up and help their teammates, resulting in the final score of 50-12. “The tigers didn’t execute in the second half, they dropped their heads and let it get away from them, then fatigue set in. We needed to be stronger in defence.” said Barry Traves.

Canowindra Junior Pythons officially started their season last weekend at the Orange Emus Gala Day. It was a perfect day for playing and watching rugby and all 3 teams did our club proud.

Under 7's Under 7’s had a great first game, with lots of new players this year coach Dom Townsend had his hands full guiding the team around the field but the day ended with big smiles and everyone keen to do it again so we are looking forward to seeing these young players get better and have fun each week. Under 11’s Due to the majority of last years Under 11’s moving on to our Under 13’s team, this year our Under 11 Pythons have joined forces with the Milthorpe Mozzies. This joint venture not only allows our boys to play the game they love, but will also form a strong bond & friendship between our two towns. Coach Matt Rice said, it follows in the ideals of Rugby: we play hard but fair against our opponents on the field, and are the best of mates off the field. Thanks to Hassad Australia for sponsoring our Player of the Week, this week its Under 11’s, Will Pearce and Mitch Stephens for their awesome efforts in tackling and making good yards in offense. Under 13's The Under 13 Pythons/Cowra team had a big hit out in Cowra on Saturday and were set a formidable task against a much bigger Parkes team. The boys played out of their boots and smashed Parkes 35 – 5, with our own Dylan Slattery scoring 2 tries. Canowindra coach Rolls Townsend said the team is coming together really well and everyone is giving 110% every week. Next week the Under 13’s travel to Dubbo, while the Walla teams have the week off.
