A Home Making A Difference

For many a home is a haven, a place to call your own, a place to feel comfortable and at ease in. This is what the project ‘Realising for the Read Triplets’ is all about; creating a space perfect for three children, Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon. Many locals would know the inspiring story of the 10 year old Read Triplets who were born with Merosin Deficient Muscular Dystrophy and are wheelchair bound. The community of Canowindra has once again rallied behind the children, helping the family build a unique and purpose-built home for the triplets long term special needs. Work is well and truly underway at the Reads place on the outskirts of Canowindra, with the unusual ‘Hempcrete’ walls

currently being built. Theirs will be only the second ‘Hemp home’ in the Central West, built by Belubula Hemp Homes, and designed by Envirotecture, in Sydney. Jemimah and Ben decided to use Industrial Hemp as a building material as it is naturally fire resistant, pest resistant, breathable, highly insulated, environmentally friendly, and a low maintenance wall product. “Building with Hempcrete allows the air quality and warmth in our home to be excellent, with our children only having about 40% lung capacity, this will be really good,” said Jemimah.

As I scrape the first big frost of the year off my windscreen with a plastic rewards card, continued with washing it off with water I continue to wonder why I choose to live in such a cold place, for someone who obviously hates the cold. I then get to do a story like ‘A Home Making A Difference’ on page 1 and I soon realise why I am still here. Canowindra has one of the most generous communities that I know of and everyone gets in and lends a hand. It is not only the locals that make my day but the inspiring stories I get to write. Meeting Jemimah and talking through their sustainable home designed for triplets Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon, restores my faith in humanity. What they are doing not only for their children but for the environment is something that I hope others are inspired to do. I hope you all enjoy Issue #439.

Sharon D'Elboux Chairperson of the Age of Fishes Museum discussing plans with Cameron Slayter from the Australian Museum.

Australian Museum Visits Age Of Fishes Museum

Plans are starting to get underway on site at the Age of Fishes Museum with a visit from Cameron Slayter the Australian Museum’s Branch Manager Life and Geosciences to talk about the plans for the building. “We are here today looking at the size being a potential of 40 metres long to be able to house the whole collection being over 200 fossil slabs,“ said Sharon D’Elboux, Chairperson of the Age of Fishes Museum Board. The building is planned to be this big to allow the whole collection to be catalogued correctly, be a contributing tourist attraction as well as opening it up to the scientific community. The process is also currently underway to transfer the ownership of the Canowindra fish fossils over to the Australian Museum. “We are still working on it. The Museum is committed to keeping the fossils here in Canowindra and we are working with the Museum and Cabonne to promote the facility the best way we can,” said Cameron

Slayter, Australian Museum Branch Manager. Transferring the ownership will allow more funding to be available, a complete catalogue of the fossils, provide more insurance as well as more promotion of the collection. “We are looking at promoting fossil tourism as a whole and building the importance of the Central West as a major tourism attraction,” said Cameron Slayter. With the planned building expected to drive fossil tourism there is talk around town of an exciting theory to eventually reopen the fish fossil site. More funding is needed for further excavation and there are plans of creating a clear slab to allow people to visit the site and look through the ground to see the fossils as they lie. This is all just a theory at the moment with the main focus being on displaying and preserving the already large collection.

Personalised Tote: Get a white tote bag and have some fun with it by tie dying it your mum’s favourite colour. Tea Towels of Art: Jazz up a boring white tea towel by painting something onto it. bought one. Be sure to put some time and love into it. Personalised Mug: Make Mum's mug something special by hand painting it with something special. Make a Bookmark: A beautiful yet simple gift that can be used on a daily basis. Photo Frame: Choose your favourite photo of you and your mum and put it in a frame decorated by you.

Fridge Magnet: Decorate a magnet for something that everyone can see every day. Decorate Pot Plants: Paint a pot plant and plant your Mum’s favourite flower in it.

Extensive thought has gone into every element of the house design to make it as accessible and empowering as possible for the Read triplets with their limited physical abilities. “We really wanted to create a home that is a haven for our children; it is designed so they can live as independently as possible.” In particular the house is built to accommodate the kids in their three large powered wheelchairs, with the hallway being wide enough to fit all three wheelchairs side by side to allow the children to pass each other with ease. “Our small household at the moment can be a bit hectic, directing the traffic flow, especially as they get a bit older,” Jemimah laughed. With an exciting future ahead for the Read family the big question is when will it be finished? “That’s the million-dollar question. We would love to be in by the end of the year for Christmas, ideally by the kids birthday in November! It’s actually possible with all the amazing help we’ve received from the community; we’re very grateful.” said Jemimah. Building the Hempcrete walls is based almost entirely on volunteer labour. This means the family will be able to move in sooner and with significantly reduced labour costs. Jemimah said that the family is overwhelmed with the response from the community. “I am continually amazed by the kindness and willingness of so many people. Thank you so much to everyone involved so far!” Volunteers are still needed to help complete the Hempcrete walls over the coming weeks. If you are interested in making a difference contact Mark Ward on 0427 194 600. “We would really love any help!”

Cliefden Caves Stamp

Everyone picked up a bargain at this years' Moyne Fete.

Moyne Fete A Big Success

Each year the fete is a highlight for the Canowindra Moyne Centre, which never fails to bring joy and laughter to the residents, their families and the local community. Their was live entertainment, clothing and food stalls, antique car displays and so much more. This year the Lions Club BBQ, the home baked goods stall and the fresh fruit and vegetable stalls were the biggest hit. There were around 300 attendees and more than $8,000 was raised. The money will go towards the resident’s leisure and care needs. The residents will choose where this raised money goes and they have their thinking caps on already! Melissa Delaney, Recreational Activities Officer for Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre said, "The Fete wouldn't have been a success without the support and generosity of the local community. Thank you to everyone who joined in on the fun and showed their generosity! The residents are so

proud of the Fete and what it represents. They really look forward to the Fete each year and they feel so humbled when the local community comes to celebrate their rich lives." Resident of the Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre, Mrs. Sonia Shuttle celebrated her birthday the day before the fete, and she said she had a wonderful time. "The Fete is always so much fun each year and this year I was the winning bidder at the auction for a recipe book, a tshirt and a beautiful handbag! The Fete was certainly a great way to celebrate my birthday." Centre Manager for Moyne Aged Care Plus Centre, Robynne Dresser said that social events like the fete is the key to creating a loving aged care home for older Australia. Resident, Leone Hudson said "The Fete never fails to put a smile on my face, and satisfy my sweet tooth."

Australia Post is currently profiling four magnificent caves to feature on their newest stamp collection, including the Cliefden Caves. The Cliefden Caves are located along the Belubula River just east of Canowindra. The Cliefden Caves are one of the most significant cave systems on private land in NSW. According to Australia Post it is the site of the first discovery of limestone on mainland Australia, in 1815 and houses an abundance of fossil deposits. The stamp features the golden stalactites and stalagmites of the Clown Room in Cliefden Main Cave. There will be a total of four caves in the stamp collection with the others being Weebubbie Cave located near Eucla in Western Australia, Undara Lava Tube situated in Undara Volcanic National Park, south-west of Cairns, Queensland and Kubla Khan Cave is part of the Mole Creek Karst National Park, north of Cradle Mountain, Tasmania. Australia Post Philatelic Manager Mr Michael Zsolt said: "This stamp issue presents four highly significant caves from around Australia. Each stamp provides us with a glimpse into these spectacular underground environments. We trust this stamp issue will be of interest to all Australians, especially as three of these pristine caves are accessible only to experienced cavers."

Living and Lifestyle Tips To Survive Winter On A Budget As the first frost settles on the car and mornings soon seem unbearable to get out of bed. The cooler months have certainly arrived and we have seven tips to keep you warm this winter, without blowing your budget on heating bills. 1. BE STRATEGIC ABOUT WINDOWS AND CURTAINS What time of day does the sun shine through your windows? When it does, open your curtains to soak up the heat. Once the sun’s gone, close them up to keep out the winter chill. 2. BECOME AN EXPERT ON YOUR HEATER If you have heaters installed at your place, make sure they’re working correctly and that nothing is sitting in front of or on top of them. If you’re renting and the installed heaters aren’t working, remember that your landlord has a responsibility to make sure that they are. You should also find out if you have a gas or electric heater and then check if you’re getting a good deal from your energy supplier. The Australian Energy Regulator has some great online tools to help you compare the prices of different energy offers. If you plan on buying a heater, do some research. 3. SHUT UP UNUSED ROOMS Keep the heat where you need it most by always shutting the doors on any rooms you’re not using, especially when you have the heater running.

4. GET DOOR DRAUGHT BLOCKERS Cold air often creeps in underneath doors. Snake draught stoppers are a budget way of keeping out a lot of cold air. You can even make one yourself. 5. STAY WARM WHILE YOU SIT You’re most likely to want to turn the heater up when you’re sitting still because your body temperature will naturally start to drop. Use a hot water bottle, blanket or beanie baby to prevent being tempted to turn the heater on while you’re lounging around. 6. COVER BARE FLOORS Place rugs and mats on top of any bare floors to stop chill from rising. 7. SHOP SMART FOR WINTER CLOTHES Don’t waste your budget – always read the labels when you shop for winter clothes. Avoid cotton and look for polyester (especially polyester polar fleece), wool and things with down filling. Nylon is particularly good for windproof outer layers. There’s also no harm in getting some thermal underwear, for those extra chilly days. Be strategic, cover up and shop smarter to prepare yourself for this winter, Stay warm and remember… there’s always an Aussie Summer waiting around the corner! (Source: insiderguides.com.au)

Tri Mums Club Complete Triathlon

A group of three local women are re-defining what mums groups are all about by creating a group of mums who compete in triathlons. “Basically we started from the Team Canowindra Cancer Walk we did and from that we thought we would try something different. We train together for a triathlon in a Tri Mums Club that is all about encourag-

ing other Mums to get fit and healthy,” said competitor Renee Sunderland. Over the weekend the Tri Mums Club competed in a half Ironman completing it as a relay with Margaret Duguid swimming 1.9km, Kristy Blakeley running 21km and a 90km bike ride, originally to be completed by Renee Sunderland but after an injury Scott Wallace kindly stepped in.

locally first!

“This was our first long event and it went really really well!” said Renee Sunderland. The ladies have been training with ‘Barnyard Training’ a group from Orange who train as a squad with coach Dan. The fitness group encourages people of all ages, size, shape and fitness level to get in and have a go. “Dan really helped us prepare for this event and he had 40 athletes at the event on the weekend,” said Renee Sunderland. Canowindra was well represented in the Ironman challenge over the weekend with other locals competing. Rossanne Holmes competed in the bike event and Julie Middleton who completed the full Ironman being 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a 42km run placed third in her age group, which is a massive achievement. The Tri Mums are now coming into their off season but they don’t look like slowing down. They are now gearing up to complete a full half marathon individually next year. They will continue competing in shorter events throughout the year with the next one being a half marathon in June, then another in October. “The best thing is knowing that you can actually achieve this. Everyone and anyone can achieve it if they put their mind to it. It is great being with a great bunch of mums and everyone is really supportive,” said the Tri Mums Club.

Hemp For Homes The Central West is moving forward in the way of sustainable living with Belubula Hemp Homes about to start their third project in just 12 months. Hemp as a building material is amazing and it is definitely a product that has a high demand in rural conditions. “Once people are aware of this product and it's capabilities it's impossible to say no to it. Hemp is naturally sound proof, termite resistant, it thermally insulates all year round, is fire resistant, insect resistant and rat resistant to list a few of our favourite features,” said Sarah Isaacs from Belubula Hemp Homes. Hemp can grow anywhere, with minimal water requirements, no pesticides, no weeds, reduced air pollution, it grows vigorously within months and enriches soil with its natural benefits so it can be grown in between other crop seasons. Belubula Hemp Homes currently source their hemp through the Australian Hemp Masonry Company at a farm in the Hunter Valley but say, “To have a Hemp farm locally would be extremely beneficial." Belubula Hemp Homes has been operating for just under 12 months with huge prospects focusing more on building with Hemp in the near future. Their supervisor James Isaacs has been working in the building industry within Canowindra for 12 years and has all relevant qualifications to work with the material. “With the right knowledge it can be relatively simple to build with. Knowing how to mould the Hemp to suit the construction method is an intricate skill,” said James Isaacs. Hemp homes are slightly more expensive than conventional brick construction, although once built they are extremely cost effective. The economical homes self insulate with their breathable walls, dramatically reducing the need for heating or cooling.

PYTHONETTIES HIT THE COURTS

Canowindra's netball courts are a buzz again this year with the start of the new season already underway. 35 girls have registered for Net Set Go on Friday afternoons. “To have so many girls join us again for Netball this year is fantastic! We had such an amazing year last year, the support we received from the community was overwhelming. We have been able to purchase a lot of new training equipment, which will get a lot of use from our girls. Our Fridays are full of fun activities,” said coordinator Mandy Townsend. This year has been another exciting step for the Canowindra PythoNetties, as 13 of the girls are making the trip to Cowra each Saturday morning to play in the Cowra Junior competition. The Pythonetties also have 6 girls joining the Under 10's Development Squad training sessions. “The girls are loving all the extra game time and every time they step on the court their skills are improving, which is great to see,” said Mandy. If you are interested in joining the Canowindra PythoNetties on a Friday afternoon find them on Facebook.
