Mother’s Day Fundraiser

Last Saturday St Edwards Primary School P&F held a successful fundraiser with over 80 people attending the Mother’s Day Cocktail Soiree. “The Cocktail Soiree was a great success with numbers higher than expected,” said Jane Atkinson, St Edwards P&F Publicity Officer. “The food was amazing! We had duck pancakes, Tommy’s curries and a decadent dessert table. The cocktails were also a hit with the suave debonair Principal Ken McNamara being chief barman,” said Mandy Townsend. With an estimated $2,000 raised for the school, “The money will go towards purchasing new furniture for the infants classroom to create a collaborative, funky, fun and engaging learning environment,” said Mandy Townsend. Mandy says fundraising events don't hap-

pen without the generous support of businesses and the community. “Thank you to everyone who came along, we are so glad you all had a lovely night. Thanks to the St Eddie's parents for the yummy desserts, Karen Parrish and friends for the beautiful cards, Swinging Bridge, Windowrie Wines and Pinaroo Estate for donating wine, Canowindra Bottle Shop for donating our gorgeous wine hampers and helping out with the cocktails and of course Tommy Jeffs, as none of it would have been possible without him donating his time, delicious curries and allowing us to host the Soiree at Montrose House. Thank you Tommy!” The St Edwards Primary School P&F will be hosting more events throughout the year including their annual Spring Fling, expected to be bigger and better then ever!

Are you happy with your online profile as a small business operator, or would you like to expand your presence in the digital world? Set next Tuesday aside in your diary, as there will be two free workshops in Forbes that is all about boosting your internet profile in the online map services of Google, Apple and Microsoft. “It is all about claiming your placemark on online maps,” said Geomancia’s Managing Director, Angela McCauley, who is presenting Building the Digital Economy workshops in Forbes and Dubbo. She said not many business owners realised they could claim the placemark which pops up when you do a Google search for a business. “By claiming the placemark they can add more information, such as business hours and upload photos. This would give you much better search results if people would for instance Google for a certain service using the words ‘near me’,” Angela said. The workshop is for two hours and during the first hour Angela will focus on changes in consumer behavior and the transformation to the digital world for businesses. The second hour will be a hands on session where participants will start building a web presence. If you are already on the web, you will get tips on how to lift your search results. (See advertisement on page 3 for details of the workshop.)

Baroquefest Is Back

The well-known Baroquefest will be on again this year from the 13th to 15th October, for their 3rd annual festival. The renowned Sydney based icon, 'The Song Company', will sing at All Saints Church Friday evening. This acoustically splendid old church has become very popular with The Sydney Conservatorium of Music and many musicians and ensembles from within the region and beyond over the past few decades. The baroque music genre composed throughout Europe from roughly 1600 to 1750 was trialled at Baroquefest with huge acclaim in 2015. It has been so successful to date that it has now become synonymous with Canowindra. The Academy Singers, virtuoso violinist Rachael Beesley, Limestone Consort and

Muffat Collective will be putting their interpretation on music and song from the fabulous baroque repertoire, which is regrowing in popularity around the world. The Sunday concerts at the wineries will include lunch at Wallington's and dinner at Rosnay. “This year Baroquefest will be including an education program offering our schools the opportunity to bring groups of students to meet our performers and participate in a musical experience,” said Richard Statham. Marian Arnold a producer and presenter for 24 years on ABC Classic FM radio will be at every concert to charm and enthuse the audiences. Packages and tickets are available from the website www.baroquefest.org.au

It’s Time To Rug Up Winter is coming and nights will only be getting cooler. There is nothing worse then waking up in the middle of the night searching for another blanket as you shiver uncontrollably to keep yourself warm. Consider adding layers to your bed this winter to ensure a warm and peaceful nights sleep. Wool mattress toppers, bed underlays and an electric blanket are all great starts in keeping you warm. This winter opt for flannelette sheets or sheets with a higher thread count, use a mid-weight wool blanket and feather donnas are also ideal for the cooler conditions.

One of the most affordable and old school options for keeping warm is the hot water bottle. You will be surprised how well these work in keeping you toasty throughout the night. Winter doesn’t have to be all dark and dreary. Liven up the bedroom with different patterns, colours and textures by adding a new throw, quilt or pillows. Sleeping in on a cold, rainy day can be delightful when your bed is cosy and warm. The right bedding can make all the difference in ensuring you have the best nights sleep.

MONTROSE House Hello readers, Welcome to this months column and autumn is finally here with lovely sunny days and cool nights to sleep in those warm beds. I have had all of the fires going at Montrose House and they have kept the house nice and toasty. I started the month off with a beautiful red and white themed dinner for Jill Messenger who celebrated her 70th birthday with a large gathering of her wonderful family. This very special lady doesn’t look her age, that’s for sure. A beautiful night was had by all, Happy Birthday Jilly! We also celebrated best friend Sandra Russell’s daughter Abbies 21st with a fabulous night of family and friends with a delicious buffet in the Tuscany room, everyone dressed to the nines and had a wonderful time. Lots of visitors staying from Sydney and Melbourne, also a couple touring from England who loved the house, especially the big fire going in the library, very impressed with Canowindra and its people. Fiona and Rachel Ferguson organised a 30th Birthday for family member Katie on Friday the 12th with a gathering of girlfriends from Forbes and surrounding areas to celebrate this sensational lady’s birthday, with a red and black themed dinner party. Saturday the 13th May I was pleased to open my house to the St Eddys Cocktail Party for a Mother’s Day Fundraiser. I donated all the food for the night, which saw them raise well over $2,000 for the school. These Canowindra girls shine when they put their glad rags on. A sensational night had by all. I hosted the PLC Pymble Ladies College Monday the 15th for the second year in a row. A delightful bunch of girls and teachers. Thanks to Julie from Riverview Motel for letting me spoil these special ladies, the hat parade was so much fun. Then an 80th birthday lunch on Sunday 21st for Cath Fitzsimmons Mum in a pink and silver theme and that’s my month. I am heading off overseas on the 27th May for a couple of weeks rest and recreation so looking forward to that. Take care and look after yourself. Tommy x

CANOWINDRA SPORT JUNIOR PYTHONS

Saturday saw the U13’s Cowra/ Canowindra team head to Dubbo to play the very strong Blue Roos. Andy scored the teams only try of the day out wide. While other local Jack tackled well all game and received 1 point. Final score 39 – 5 to the Roos. Sunday’s Gala Day for the Walla teams was in Forbes, it was a wet and cold morning which our Mums loved! The U11’s Mozziepythons team made big improvements in all areas this week. Strong bursting runs by Harry, a 50m try to Lachie. Huge effort by the boys, with narrow losses to the bigger towns. U9’s are improving their tackling skills with each game. Although they didn’t come away with any wins, the boys put in a mighty fine effort, with Jack Smyth being the Hassad’s Player of the Day. U7’s had a great day. The new players are starting to get the hang of things with the two Wills making some great straight runs. While Rueben and Clancy showed off their speed.

CANOWINDRA TIGRESSES The Tigresses celebrated their first win for the season 28-20. Player's player was Danielle Brown. 3 points went to Meaghan Waters who had an amazing game at full back. Keira received 2 points for her constant talk on the field, great tagging and hard running. 1 point went to both Kathy Davis and Daisy Whatman who worked exceptionally hard in attack and defense. The team will continue to work hard at training, for the next game at Peak Hill next Sunday.

CANOWINDRA TIGERS

The Tigers played Burrangong in what was one of their best games of the season. Jayden Brown opened the game with a try. As the Tigers continued with their hard attack Brydon Hughes put a kick in for Jamie

Grant to score his first try for the season. Baily Cain then scored making it 18-0 at half time. The second half didn’t get off to a great start with Burrangong getting one over the line. A good try was then scored by Curtis Hughes after an inside ball from brother Brydon Hughes. The Tigers continued to improve with Brydon Hughes also scoring making the final score 42-6. Best and Fairest and 3 points went to Andrew Gallard. 2 points to Brydon Hughes. 1 point to Marika Kirkoroivai and Tim Wythes.

MEN’S BOWLS

Last Sunday a major triples match was played with Pat Kennedy, Barney Robson and Matthew Lawrence against Peter Taylor, Roger Traves and David Beath. David's team got off to a good start leading 9-4 after 6 ends, but after that the scores became close with the game locked up at 17 all on the 20th end. Matthew's team scored 1 shot on the last end to win the game 1817. This Saturday May 20 there will be a free barbecue from 12.30pm to mark the opening of the clubs new TAB. All welcome. From the 25th May the Chinese Restaurant will be under new management. In line with these developments the club will have new opening hours. Friday badge draw is $700 and bingo this Thursday 11am.

WOMEN’S BOWLS

There was one error made in last week’s news, in the Bowls Day held at Forbes on Saturday the 6th May Deanna Noble did not win a singles trophy, she actually won one singles game and Joice McNaught, Nancy Morrow & Sandy McDonald won one triples game, this item was missed last week. Well done Colleen & Gwen as runnersup in the District Senior Pairs. The players who competed in the District Pairs were unsuccessful.
