Canowindra’s Biggest Morning Tea

Last Thursday 25th May, the CWA ladies hosted the Biggest Morning Tea to help raise money for cancer research.

“It was a very successful morning, we raised $1,347, we just can’t believe the generosity of the town,” said Jenny Middleton.

A big thank you to everyone in the community who either donated or helped in some way including: Delice, IGA, Coco Harvest and The Canowindra Newsagency.

“A special thank you to Billy Paul, Bill Coady and the exercise groups from the Health Centre and the Hospital for their contribution. We had over 100 people in about two hours,” said Jenny.

The Biggest Morning Tea has been running in Canowindra for about 20 years now, with each year making a bigger impact than the last.

“So many people have been touched by

cancer in some way and I think that is why so many people are willing to give for research,” said Jenny.

Every dollar counts in helping with research, prevention and support service programs.

• $15 can help provide information to cancer patients and their families.

• $50 can help make sure there’s a cancer nurse available on 13 11 20 to offer information and support.

• $150 can help provide transport and accommodation to cancer patients.

Dear Editor, Quoting a section of your article (Issue 441) Water Update - INQUIRY INTO RURAL WATER SUPPLIES, claiming "inundate the precious Cliefden Caves, but also be at risk of leaking and causing earthquakes." would seem to be a long bow, as the only event that could cause earthquakes would be where water flooded lower galleries of the caves, and it is yet to be seen what the depth of the cave system is because most of the structures underground seem to be above the anticipated dam water line. That is, until a comprehensive geo-tech study is done and the caves depth mapped so far as possible, which survey would also report on the likely penetration of fissures that might exist in the river bed or surrounds that could be penetrated by static dam water pressure. It is a fact that any initiative in Australia is curtailed by the 'we can't do that' mob who wail and gnash their teeth, as against progressive and desirable improvements for our future security.

Stop prevaricating and build the dam.

Blacksmith Workshop The Canowindra Creative Centre hosted a successful Blacksmith workshop on Saturday 27th May, at the Canowindra Showground.

Dave Walker from ‘All Things Sharpened’ conducted the workshop, which had everyone enthused.

“Thank you to Dave for providing a very informative, enjoyable and productive day.

Many thanks to the Canowindra Men’s Shed for providing a sausage sizzle and the Canowindra Creative Centre for providing a cuppa and soup, many thanks also to the Canowindra Showground Trust for providing an excellent venue and facility,” said Deb Rutter.

Many people of all ages attended the workshop with six adults and three children participating, along with 25 people who observed throughout the day. “It was wonderful to see fathers and sons working together, enjoying the day,” said Deb Rutter.

Blood Bank to visit Canowindra: The Australian Red Cross is calling for all blood donations when they visit Canowindra on Wednesday 21st June, from 9.15am3.30pm at Morris Park. It only takes about an hour to donate blood and your donation could help save three lives. 34% of blood donations go to cancer and blood related diseases, 19% other causes of anemia, 18% surgical patients, 13% other medical problems, 10% orthopaedic patients including fractures, 4% obstetrics including pregnant women and 2% to trauma and accidents.

Karlie Irwin, founder of Pay It Forward, announces the new crisis accommodation soon to be available.

Crisis Accommodation Coming Soon Pay It Forward (PIF), the community based program in Orange, is thriving ahead with a new crisis accommodation unit soon to be available.

The crisis accommodation unit is only weeks away from providing 24 hour emergency accommodation for up to 12 weeks stay for people and their families.

“We will have 4 operational rooms to house families and people experiencing

homelessness. The crisis unit has been redeveloped and refurbished to provide a beautiful home away from home, in a safe and nurturing environment,” said founder Karlie Irwin.

Karlie Irwin was the speaker at Canowindras International Women’s Day event earlier this year, where she spoke about starting up PIF and the difference it is making to Orange and the surrounding areas.

“PIF has assisted many local Canowindra community members who have reached out to PIF in times of need and we encourage the Canowindra community to seek support from us, as we are very interested in assisting the surrounding communities,” said Karlie Irwin.

PIF is constantly growing and continuing to provide services to those in need by offering a number of different services including; low cost furniture and household goods, a low cost lawn mowing service and a food pantry.

“Pay It Forward will continue to grow and develop programs to assist current needs for people and families in the community, while also continuing to offer the already existing services,” said Karlie Irwin.

The Canowindra community can assist PIF by talking about what they do and who they are.

“Sharing the PIF story with the community and letting people know we are here to offer support. PIF welcomes the Canowindra community to visit the charity and see what we are doing. Contact the charity on (02) 5353 1163 if you know someone in need of support services like ours. Volunteers and sponsors are always welcome,” said Karlie Irwin.

Tractor Trek Takes Flight

The well known Tractor Trek Group in the Central West are gearing up for another great event on the 23rd and 24th of September, with a new chosen charity.

This year the money raised will go towards Little Wings. Little Wings was established in 2012 and has provided over 1,100 flights, transporting more than 2,600 passengers.

Little Wings is a not-for-profit organisation, whose aim is to support families to reduce the financial burden, emotional strain and travel fatigue experienced during this time.

Little Wings has been keeping families together here in the Central West by providing 8 flights from Bathurst, 25 from Cowra, 122 from Dubbo, 18 from Forbes, 33 from Narromine, 62 from Orange and 3 from Wellington since starting.

The Tractor Trek Group, a charity run completely by volunteers, is on a mission to raise $50,000 this year, which will provide 35 free flights to families in the Central West.

“It is very rewarding, it’s just great to see that we can help families and their children,”

said Tractor Trek member Roy White.

This year the event will be visiting Orange, Cargo, Cudal, Lake Canobolas, Forest Reefs, Milthorpe and Forest Road.

The Tractor Trek Group is now calling for sponsors, tractor participants and donations to help seriously ill children and their families.

“The Tractor Trek has been running for the past 5 years now around the countryside, raising 1.4 million for charity,” said Roy White.

There will also be an official dinner on Saturday the 23rd September, at the Orange City Bowling Club. Everyone is welcome to come along to the event, which will include an auction to help raise more money for Little Wings.

Hey diddle diddle, You all know the riddle, A cow jumps over the moon...But the moon is very high in the sky. How many attempts will it take before Cow makes her famous high-flying leap? The leaping, high-flying cow had the young audience in stitches last Wednesday at the St Edward’s Primary School reading for National Simultaneous Storytime. The School joined the rest of the country for the annual event with children from the Canowindra Pre-School attending as well.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 17th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Kindergarten to Year 6.

National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

Librarian of St Edward’s Primary School Mrs Fisher dressed in her cow-onesie and all the children dressed in black and white with cow masks at the ready sat and listened intently as the story was read while being projected onto a big screen for everyone to see. The book The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson is a story about friendship and perseverance. It is also a story about cows smacking into meteorites and hot air balloons and sand dunes. The children laughed and giggled and confidently answered the questions asked by Mrs Fisher.

The Pre-Schoolers were then invited to stay on and try out the new playground equipment which they loved! It was great to see so many siblings all together in the one room enjoying the story and then out in the playground, showing the little ones the ropes of “Big School”.

Bell Shakespeare Company performers entertain Canowindra Public School students.

The Wonderful World of Will “Fare thee well, I love thee not, To be or not to be” were just a few of the phrases coming out of the Canowindra Public School Hall on Wednesday afternoon last week when the Bell Shakespeare Company came to visit Years 3-6.

The Bell Shakespeare Company is an amazing theatre company that visits Canowindra Public School every two years. They engage the Primary students in various Shakespeare plays and the school knows that this is very beneficial to the students as Shakespeare is studied in English from Year 7 – 12.

If the students have a positive experience associated with Shakespeare it makes it easier for them to engage in later years.

Many past Canowindra Public School students often comment on how they enjoyed Bell Shakespeare at primary school and are interested to learn more when they get to high school. This is why Bell Shakespeare is invited back year after year.

The children were transported back to the Elizabethan Era of 1599 by the three young performers when the rat plague was rife in London, chamber pots were used, showers were unheard of and everyone drank beer not water! All in all it was a very entertaining afternoon for the children full of Shakespearian quotes, laughter and performance.

PEACOCKES solicitors SELLING AGRICULTURAL GOODS AND REGISTERING A PERSONAL PROPERTY SECURITY INTEREST It is common to sell agricultural products on terms that payment shall occur at a later date. A risk is the possibility of the buyer becoming bankrupt before you are paid.

Where a person becomes bankrupt secured persons, such as a bank with a registered mortgage will always receive payment before unsecured creditors. It is possible to become a secured creditor and this can be done by registering the debt on the Personal Property Securities Register giving your debt a higher level of priority over unsecured debtors.

HOW DO YOU EFFECTIVELY REGISTER A SECURITY INTEREST The following steps need to be taken: (1) Have a written agreement with the buyer that grants you the right to retain title in your produce until you receive payment AND a right to register a security interest on the Personal Property Securities Register. If required Peacockes can assist with preparing such an Agreement. The agreement will need: • The full and correct legal name of the buyer of your produce; • The buyer’s ABN (where they have one); and • The date of birth of the buyer (but only where the buyer is an individual or a partnership of individuals).

(2) Ensure that the written security agreement is completed and signed before delivering your goods to the buyer.

(3) Register your interest electronically on the Personal Property Securities Register at https://www.ppsr.gov.au/ Peacockes can also assist you with that process.

Tigers And Tigresses Go Down To Trundle The Canowindra Tigers took on Trundle on the weekend, with the Tigers competing well against one of the leaders of the competition.

The boys went really well and kept hanging in there the whole game. Tim Wythes played well throughout the first half and Nathan Whatman was strong in the forwards, with his continuous hit ups.

It wasn’t long before the Hughes duo came together, with Brydon Hughes offloading to his brother Curtis Hughes to score out wide, 4 metres from the sideline, making the score 8-4 after 31 minutes.

Trundle started to tire, which only saw Canowindra keep firing with Mick Clyburn making some great hit ups. Canowindra were right in this game, coming back to take the lead late in the first half. Brydon Hughes made a great offload to Mick Clyburn to hit the line. Jayden Brown then hit the line hard, shrugging defenders off before doing a dummy kick and sprinting 40 metres down the field. Jayden managed to get past Trundles defence to score under the post, to lead 16-8 at half time.

Tigers led a very exciting first half but Trundle re-grouped and came out stronger in the second half, getting in a quick try 3 minutes in. Canowindra managed to get another try in before being dominated by Trundle with

Squash News Squash Championships are underway this week, starting with the finals on Saturday, 3rd June. Many of the new players, both senior and junior, are all getting in and having a go.

The categories being played are: Open Ladies, Masters (Men and Women), B, C and D grades, High School and Primary School, which will all see some great competitive action on the courts, and lots of fun.

This year the Championship dinner will be held at the Royal Hotel at 6.30pm, all members and partners are welcome to attend the night to celebrate a great year.

There will be a sausage sizzle available all day Saturday, to ensure you all keep up your strength, all visitors are welcome to attend. The working bee that was held on Saturday was very successful, with six willing workers coming along, thank you to all who helped as it is much appreciated.

Under 12's Soccer

The Canowindra U12's Soccer team played their first five weeks known as the Wanderers, however as of this weekend, 3rd June, they will be known as Lawrence's IGA Canowindra, a big thank you to Johnny Lawrence for his support! The U12’s have had a great start to the season so far.

On 29th April they played Victory coming away with a 6 - 0 win, 3 goals went to Jonty, 1 to Bennett, 1 both to Luca and Pete.

Player of the week was Bennett Burley.

The match on the 6th May was a hard fought game against Jamieson, luckily they were able to come away with a win 3-2. A big thank you to Lincoln for playing up for them after having four players away. Player of the week was Jonty Thurgate.

The match on the 13th May was against the Mariner's, another solid performance by the team winning 3 -1. Two goals each went to Pete and Asher. Player of the week was Kyra Fisher.

The match on the 27th May was played against The Services Club. The first half was a close battle, with the team forming together more every week and gaining more confidence. They came away with a strong win 5-1, three goals to Jonty and two to Luca. Player of the week went to Raph Cuddy. This weekend Canowindra play Victory at 11.10am.

Canowindra Men’s Bowls News Last Saturday a Major Triples match was played, Max Baldwin, Mark Wright and Ian Nelder played Nick Delaney, Phil and Brent Lees. Ian's team got off to a good start to lead the game 9-8 after 11 ends, after that Brent's team took control to win the game 26-10.

Last Sunday a Semi Final of the Major Singles was played, with Vinny Mirto against Phil Lees. It was a marathon game going to 43 ends. After 23 ends Vinny had a comfortable lead at 19-13, after that Vinny lost the next 10 ends to give Phil the lead 25-19. Over the next 9 ends Vinny

was able to fight back to level the scores at 30 all. Phil was then able to score a shot on the next end to win 31-30.

A Major Pairs match was played, with Ken Fisher and Ian Nelder against Peter Taylor and Roger Traves. Peter and Roger were able to combine well to lead throughout the game winning 26-17.

JUNIOR PYTHONS

The sun might have been shinning but the wind was icy at the Orange City grounds on Sunday, but that didn’t deter the Junior Pythons.

The U7’s team had a great day in Orange, with all boys putting in a big effort. We had a couple of players hit the deck pretty hard, but everyone was keen to dust themselves off and keep going, young Swordsy and James showed just how tough the U7’s can be. Alec and Oscar weren’t afraid to run straight up, while Campbell’s long legs got a real work out. The Hassad Player of the Day comes from Under 7’s this week, Clancy Hazelton, who has been showing great interest in the game, with great running, passing and kicking. Good-on-ya Clancy!

The U9’s played some great rugby against Cowra and Wellington on Sunday, the games a great confidence boost for the

younger Pythons. Most Improved player this week was Connor Watson, while Marcus Wythes showed off his running skills and covered a lot of ground. Hugh Nash is also showing his love of rugby through great defence and clearing out like a champ.

The U11's made the coach proud on the weekend with everyone improving and playing great rugby. The boys had their 1st win against Orange Emus, beating them convincingly. We then had a 3 try all draw against Mudgee, which was a great effort as we only had 8 player's to their 11.

Last of all we played the larger town of Bathurst and went down. A big thank you to all those who made the effort to train in Blayney during the week, it payed off.

The Junior Pythons are looking forward to another great day of rugby next Sunday in Cowra.

Last Wednesday the 24th May, saw 15 ladies play in the first round of the Ladies Championship. There will be two rounds to play over the next coming weeks.

A Grade winner was Annette Thomas with 73 nett, B Grade went to Rhonda Ward with 72 nett and the C Grade winner was Margaret Sharp with 81 nett.

Ball sweep winners were Fay Thomas and Thelma Bliss. Lucky wheel went to Annette Thomas.
