Leadership Program Inspires

Last week Canowindra High School Captains Joanna Balcombe and Ciaran Etty attended the Secondary Schools Leadership Program at Government House, Sydney. On Thursday morning they had a tour of NSW Parliament where they got to sit in on a Q&A session before heading to the Legislative Council to observe a debate. “We met the Premier and local representatives before sitting in on a parliament debate, which was very interesting,” said Ciaran Etty. Among those representatives was member for Orange Phillip Donato who spoke to the group of young leaders and asked for any questions. Joanna and Ciaran then had the opportunity to go on a tour of Government House, where they met with David Hurley, Governor of New South Wales, before having a

brief talk to the Governor and his wife. “I think the best experience was actually just meeting the people in these roles and realising that they are just people like us,” said Joanna Balcombe. The leadership program inspires young leaders to continue to pursue leadership roles after school and gives them an insight into the roles and responsibilities of our government. “My biggest thing to take away was to manage your time, especially as a leader and to really put yourself out there, take opportunities and make yourself known,” said Ciaran Etty. With only a short time left at Canowindra High School both Joanna and Ciaran plan on utilising there leadership skills, to then continue them on into the workforce.

Something that I have been hearing about a lot lately is the use of natural remedies to treat a common cold or headache. I am sure each family would have their own traditions passed down but who else was told growing up to have a cup of tea with ginger and honey to get over a cold? There’s no wonder why, our food has an abundance of health properties. Ginger is known as an anti-inflammatory, can help fight infections along with so many other health benefits. Honey is anti-bacterial, reduces cough's and throat inflammation, strengthens the immune system as well as so much more. More and more people are getting back to natural remedies to help them get through the woes of winter. Many people are also choosing to get back to their natural roots with some even using essential oils, which have been used since ancient times. An essential oil is basically a compound from seeds, bark, roots,

flowers as well as other plant parts. They can be used for a variety of emotional and physical needs and the quality of the oil will often determine the affects. Whether you use essential oils or natural remedies it is an interesting concept that our own food can heal us. There is no denying that there is amazing health benefits found in our food all across the world. What home remedies do you have up your sleeve? Taneil Thornberry

One of the highlights of this year’s budget was the big increase in funding for our schools. It’s a huge step forward from where we were in this crucial sector. There is an $18.6 billion increase in new funding over the next 10 years, with $384 million for Calare. This is not pie in the sky stuff. This funding kicks in straight away. Every school in Calare will get a funding boost.

Why were changes necessary? Let’s break it down: •

Because as Gonski himself has said, his original funding plan had been well and truly corrupted. The last days of Julia Gillard were so shaky that they were writing cheques they knew they would never have to cash. They were in effect, throwing Monopoly money around, because none of it was ever funded. They ended up with a whopping 27 separate agreements. The worst of it was that this broken system wasn’t fair. It valued disadvantaged children in separate states differently. A child in one state who was suffering

disadvantage was worth less to the government in terms of spending than a child suffering the same disadvantage in another state. To my way of thinking, that’s not right. It sure as heck isn’t the Australian way. •

The whole system was bent totally out of shape and that’s why David Gonski has come back on the scene to make sure that his original vision is implemented. He has given this new and real Gonski funding the seal of approval, and he is personally making recommendations to how the funding is to be best implemented.

I said in my inaugural speech to the Federal Parliament that we needed a school funding system that recognised the relative disadvantage that country children often face. I think the critics should start giving a Gonski, and start supporting the real Gonski which is backed by Gonski himself. I have outlined in the table below how just a few schools in our area will benefit. Keep in mind that the states are traditionally responsible for funding state schools and these figures relate to Commonwealth funding only.

What’s The Go-Gonski? Gonski is a funding agreement by the NSW Government and the Federal Government in 2013, which agrees to bring all schools up to minimum resource standard. A change in this years’ federal budget see’s the Gonski program get the axe and being replaced by new funding for schools. “It’s an increase of $18.6 billion over the next ten years for schools right around Australia, including Calare. Schools, in every sector, in every local community in the electorate of Calare will be receiving significant increases in funding because of this needs-based funding model,” said Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee. Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party Member for Orange Philip Donato thinks otherwise, “This $11.78 million in school funding cuts represents an absolute failure by the National Party in Government to stand up for rural families. Gonski school funding is based on genuine need, and merit. Schools in my electorate were promised $11.78 million because they genuinely needed and deserved that funding.” Gonski has caused an up-roar with many believing they are getting the raw end of the deal. Canowindra High School is set to lose $264,447 of Gonski funding and Canowindra Public School will have a loss of $210,730. While the Federal Government believe that Canowindra High School’s funding will increase by $44,500 in 2017/18 and $2,724,500 over 10 years, while Canowindra Public School’s funding will increase by $32,300 in 2017/18 and $1,975,900 under the new funding plan. “By comparing the funding differences in the Gonski agreement and the Turnbull plan, it appears that many NSW Public schools may never reach the minimum resource standard even over the 10 year period,” said Kelly Anderson Country Organiser NSW Teacher Federation. Andrew Gee believes that the Gonski program was a broken system “We needed a school funding system that recognised the relative disadvantage that country children often face. I think the critics should start giving a Gonski, and start supporting the real Gonski which is backed by Gonski himself.”

Busy Bee’s At Canowindra Preschool!

Did you know that Canowindra Pre-School offers Outside School Hours Care? The service has been running for over a year now with local families using the service. For this service to grow the Pre-School is calling for new enrolments for 2017. The service operates during the school term on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3-6pm for children aged 3-12. School bus transport is available from Canowindra Public School, St Edward’s Primary School and St Raphael’s Catholic School in Cowra. The cost is only $15 per child per afternoon and bookings can be made for the term or on an occasional/daily basis. The children have a great time each afternoon playing outside, completing their homework and even making taco’s for dinner! In other Pre-School news the Capital Works Building Grant plans are well underway after the Pre-School was granted over $240,000 back in March. The Pre-School has engaged Cabonne Constructions to carry out the works which include internal changes to the existing building and a new multi-purpose and administration building. In order for these major changes to take place the Pre-School will be holding a Working Bee on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June. The Pre-School are calling all tradies and ladies to come along and get their hands dirty. If you can’t make it on either day there are certain tools and trailers needed that the Pre-School would love to borrow. If you can help in any way please call Adelaide in the office on 6344 1261.

Canowindra Arts Inc is offering local school students, who show creative promise in art, an opportunity to be mentored and developed by professional artists within the group’s fold. The program is made possible by a funding grant that’s making an initial six places available for emerging young artists in 2017. Canowindra Arts Chair Arthur Falconer said, “We’re inviting Canowindra High School and local residents to apply on behalf of youngsters aged between 12 and 16 who are demonstrating early talent, skills and enthusiasm or passion for painting and would benefit from the guidance and nurturing of established adult professionals.” The students chosen for the program will be offered a series of workshops, conducted by Canowindra Arts members, providing talks on the history, philosophy and celebrated diversity of the art of painting, along with instruction on the various tools and mediums that artists use. Each workshop would include a practical session in which the students would paint their own works, and they would be encouraged to show and discuss work that they may have completed at home or at school. “The spirit of the tuition will be friendly, informal and nurturing, with obviously a lot of opportunity for one-on-one attention to the children,” says Arthur. “The six students will be invited to join in the activities of the Canowindra Arts group and display their artworks in our annual program of exhibitions in Canowindra.” If you are interested contact Canowindra Arts Inc info@canowindraarts.org.au, or phone 0408 416 034.

Living and Lifestyle Ten Things To Do In Winter When Stuck At Home As winter sweeps over we often all go into hibernation, our bodies seize up and we refuse to do anything productive in fear of our toes and fingers falling off. Winter is actually the perfect time to get more productive, the days are shorter which means you are inside earlier. Weekends are spent deciding whether you should make a run for it to the car over the frosty lawn, or stay in your nice warm bed all day long. Here are some ideas for when you get stuck at home next wondering what to do: • Start reading that book you have always wanted to but never found the time to read, or learn something new by reading a book you wouldn’t normally choose. • Get active, sign up to that gym and start working on your summer body now. This will not only keep you warm but will be so beneficial for your health.

• Get organised and re-arrange your closet. Spending some time putting everything in order will save you time down the track when you can’t find anything to wear. • Cook something new. As the days get shorter we are spending more time inside. Why not use that time to bake or make something new for dinner. • Learn a new skill. Keep challenging yourself by taking up a new skill like knitting, painting or even plug into a podcast. • Pamper yourself. The cold weather often dries out your skin so take some time to relax and refresh with an aromatic bubble bath. • Set some goals. Get clear on what you want in life and write them down or cre-

ate a vision board to help motivate and push you further. • Activities for the whole family. Board games were once a household rivalry that was well fought. Ignite the passion in everyone and spend some quality time together playing a game such as monopoly. • Plan your next vacation. Research where you would like to travel to next, sites to explore, places to eat and activities to do. Even if it is just for the weekend, the planning process will see you light up with excitement and it will give you something to look forward to. • Snuggle up on the lounge and watch a good movie. Take time some time out and just relax.

CANOWINDRA SPORT JUNIOR RUGBY

The winners from the 2017 Squash Championships.

Canowindra Squash Championships

Laughter and ecstatic energy kicked off this years’ 2017 Squash Championships over the weekend. The day was a great success with many spectators coming along to support the players, which seemed to increase the players’ effort making games highly contested. Most games were only separated by 1 point and one match even had a draw. The athleticism and speed didn’t seem to tire the players too much, as many played up to four games on the court. This year the Sportsmanship Award went to the very deserving Oliver Wythes. Club Person of the year went to Mark Adams, who never tires from all things squash. Congratulations to Oliver and Mark and to the Open Championship winner Mick Flannery and Mark Adams who was Runner Up. Ladies Championship for the 10th year straight went to Amber Meurs, and the B Grade winner was Will Wright. C Grade Champion went to Jimmy Davis and An-

drew Pull was the D Grade winner. The Primary School Championship went to Amy Harrison over Lillian Harrison and the High School Champion was Will Wright with Lucas Ellis being Runner Up. The Women’s Masters went to Sue Johnson and the Men’s Masters went to Will Johnson. Most Improved Player on Thursdays was awarded to Fred Broughton, Laura Kemmis and Kassie Wythes. On Saturday night everyone enjoyed a dinner at the Royal Hotel to celebrate a great week. A big thank you to Swinging Bridge Wines - Mark and Tom Ward and Charles Curran for their sponsorship. “Without the teamwork of our members and hard working committee this would not have been possible. A special thanks to Trevor Simpson who’s coaching of the juniors is making a huge difference to the Club. Congratulations and well done everyone!” said Sandy McDonald.

Another great weekend of Junior Rugby with the U13’s playing Orange Emus in a very tight game. The forwards played a great defensive game and the backs ran the ball out wide to score 4 times. Unfortunately the Emus scored in the last minute to win the game 32- 26. The Walla Gala Day was in Cowra and the U7’s enthusiasm for rugby is growing with every game. A great game with a highlight being Mossman Stingrays and that the boys spelt out CANOWINDRA! The U9’s had a few tough hit outs in Cowra this week, the young side are showing great commitment by backing up to power on every game. Marcus was most improved in defence and the team awarded Players Player to Sam. The U11’s had an epic first game destroying Bathurst Bulldogs 6 tries to nil. They went down to Emus in the 2nd, but ‘psyched up’ to beat the second Bulldogs team in the 3rd game. Hassad’s player of the week goes to Mitch Stephens for running and playing with gusto. The Canowindra Pythons would like to pass on our condolences to Cowra Rugby and the family of Paul ‘Poppa’ Smith, our thoughts are with you all.

GOLF

Last Wednesday was the second round of the Championships: A Grade winner: Julie Fairley, B Grade winner: Helen Constable, Ball sweep winner was Marg Sharp and Anne Cassidy won the lucky wheel. On Monday the Canowindra Ladies played Forbes in pennants with Canowindra winning 3-2. The team was Annette, Roslyn, Eileen, Helen K and Helen C. A big thank you to Anne, Marea and Rhonda for the lovely lunch.

Women’s And Men’s Bowls Result of the Handicap Pairs 1st round: Radka Tatterson and Nancy Morrow defeated Shirley Robson and Deanna Noble 20-14, Nancy played excellent bowls. The three Canowindra teams who competed in the District Triples held at Forbes on Monday were all beaten. The No. 4 Pennant team who competed in the Region 12 Pennant Playoffs held at West Dubbo Club last week were unsuccessful. Thanks to Diane Slattery the reserve who played one match and to the seven of our members who came to cheer us on. Congratulations to the winners and all the best for the State Playoffs.

We have two members celebrating birthdays this month Lorne Burgess on the 6th and Dianne Mooney on the 27th, a very happy birthday to you both! Last Saturday the final of the Major Singles was played with Ian Nelder playing Phil Lees. After 20 ends the scores were close 17-15 in favour of Phil, then after 31 ends Phil had a comfortable lead of 28-20. Ian was able to come back to trail 29-27 and on the last end Phil scored 2 shots to win the final 31-27. A Minor Pairs match was also played with Allen Wyburn and Tracy Bates playing Matt McMullen and Matt Cramp. The

two Matts took control of the game winning 23-9. Last Sunday a Major Triples match was played with Pat Kennedy, Barney Robson and Matthew Lawrence against Terry Mooney, Steve Fisher and Vinny Mirto. It was a close game with Matthew's team winning 24-18. A Minor Triples match was also played with Tracy Bates, Allen Wyburn and Bob Bates against Bob Robson, Matt Cramp and Matt McMullen. How long have you lived in Canowindra and what do you like about living here? I have lived on a cattle farm near Canowindra for most of my life but I will always be a Robertson boy at heart, my favourite pie shop is there! Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? Rustle cattle for a living and make quality lucerne hay. I love working in the outdoors and learning off my old man. What do you do to unwind after work or on the weekends? I enjoy playing Rugby League and having a few beers with the footy fellas at the Canowindra Royal. What are you really good at? I like to think I go alright at playing Rugby League. If you could have a super power what would it be? If I had a superpower it would be to see through people's clothes. What is your pet hate? It would have to be Dan Middleton answering most of these questions for me. Tell us about your best holiday. Wattos 30th boat cruise!!

CANOWINDRA SPORT TIGERS TAKE ON EUGOWRA

A good clash between the Canowindra Tigers and Eugowra over the weekend saw Eugowra take the win. Eugowra scored two tries in the first 10 minutes of the game, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. Canowindra were a bit disorganised in attack and had a number of penalties, which set them back. Canowindra were able to score two tries before half time with Callum Clyburn making a great try under the post. Canowindra came out better in the second half with the forwards running a few more angles. With 10 minutes to go the score sat at 18-20, with Canowindra holding them out well. The crowd was roaring as Eugowra bouldered over the line to score the winning try in the corner. “The Tigers were unlucky this week with the boys not getting up. We are in a lot better position with the new players looking very good and the more we train the more we are looking to be a big force in the second half of the competition,” said Barry Traves. Players Player-Jayden Brown 3 Points - Napoloini Navulavula 2 Points - Velise Rabuetlina 1 Point - Tim Wythes and Jayden Brown Tigresses had a great physical game against Eugowra with the girls really stepping up this week.
