Marion Wilson stands in the Main Street of Canowindra proud to have been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Marion Wilson Receives Prestigious Award
Marion Wilson was officially awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia, last Monday on the Queens Birthday. The Order of Australia recognises outstanding members of the community at a national level, for those who have given extraordinary services to Australia and humanity. “I am very humbled, it is really the work of a group of people. I am surrounded by marvellous people, it’s a thrill to be honoured in this way,” said Marion Wilson. “I was nominated 18 months ago for my work in health, the church and local community groups,” she said. Marion is currently the Co-Chair of the Anglican and Uniting Church Council, Chair of Community Life Centre Development, Chair of District Church Council Unit-
ing Church, Chair of the Christmas Day Lunch Committee and Chair of Canowindra Foodbasket, just to name a few. “It is wonderful. When you give you get a heap back. I just do it and don’t really think about it. I see opportunities to make a difference in the community and with the help of other wonderful people we really make a difference.” Marion has had a big involvement in Health Care in the Central West and says, “I was 1 in 6 of the nurses who came to the Central West and the first to come to Canowindra”. She worked on state policies for the Department of Health and worked with the committees to establish multi purpose services. Continued on page 2

To the Editor Canowindra Phoenix, With great respect for the views of other people in relation to surface water storages on the Belubula River, there are alternatives to the industrial manipulation of water for human use. People who live in city environments for many generations, lose their nature consciousness and no longer can think of natural phenomena working where they live. Surface water storages evaporate more water than plants, animals and people use in any one year. In America over recent times many dams, the size of Wyangala have been removed as local communities have discovered the lack of water available in their own valley river systems. We need to study history in order not to repeat it. Over the last twelve thousand years people have turned their habitat lands into desert, over the mid latitudes of the Earth, no less so in Australia, just through their ignorance of nature’s laws, building infrastructure not eco-structure.
THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN
THUMBS UP To the organisers of the Team Penning last weekend!
THUMBS UP To campovens, bonfires and picnics in the paddocks over the long weekend!
THUMBS UP To Marion Wilson on her well-deserved Medal of the Order of Australia awarded over the long weekend.
THUMBS UP To the new café in town for opening early and serving delicious coffee!
Harnessing nature to work for us is only a matter of using the living practices of multiples of species of both plants and animals co-evolving together, playing each their own ecological roles to ‘farm’ our land and water, as nature has always done. Nature made regenerated environments are far more productive, profitable and enjoyable than manmade environments and ‘self-replace’ by natural increase. I would like local grass roots communities of people to be far more important and state, federal and international institutions, be downsized. Paul Newell

An Insight Into The Workforce Canowindra High School Year 10 students spent last week away on work experience, to allow students to have an insight into a career they may be interested in. Zali Dunn was lucky enough to be accepted into doing placement at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo, after expressing her interest to study to be a keeper, zoologist or vet. “I thought it was a pretty cool experience, it’s not everyday that you get to see behind the scenes at the zoo. I got to help in the feeding, cleaning, handling, performing health checks and observing the animals. I loved all of it!” said Zali.

Simon Budden chose the PCYC in Cowra to conduct his work experience as he loves sport and is a very active person. “My supervisor was great! He showed me around and we set up for different sports. It is something I would be interested in after school,” said Simon Budden. Austin Pengilly went to McClintocks for the week. “I am interested in being a mechanic. I got to work on mostly large machinery including bailers,” said Austin Pengilly. Blaine White went to Jamieson Joinery. “I really enjoy carpentry. I got to be in the workshop and help build cupboards. I learnt how to drill properly and safely,” said Blaine White. Patrick Wythes went to the Cowra Airport and is well and truly inspired even more to become a pilot. “I got to use the flight simulator, refuel planes and move planes into hangers, it was pretty fun,” said Patrick Wythes. Hudson Izzard is interested in a career in health and did his work experience at a Physio in Orange. “I think I want to be a physiotherapist or work in the health industry. I got to observe clients and ask questions. I learnt new muscles and got a grasp of what it would be like,” Hudson Izzard said. Logan Howell worked for Tom Beath at Central West Building. “I am interested in building when I leave school. I got to work in between two sites and be involved in building and demolition. The best bit was meeting new people,” said Logan Howell. Canowindra High School Careers Advisor Bev Taylor said, “A huge thanks to all of the employees who took on students and provided them with the opportunity to have first hand experience and guidance”.
Western NSW Dance Festival
Canowindra High School students competed at the Western NSW Dance Festival last Wednesday in Bathurst and all had a wonderful time. The festival aims to encourage and develop dance programs in Western NSW. The Festival showcased dancers from schools all across the district. “It was a wonderful night and our dance team did an exceptional job!” said Teacher Kath Balcombe. Special thanks and congratulations must go to: Kath Balcombe, for all of the time and effort she gave in preparing the girls in every aspect including sewing the fabulous costumes; to Brooke Kinsela in Year 12 who did an amazing job in choreographing the dance routine; and to Mrs Kinsela and Mrs
McKenzie who provided support to the girls on the day. Thank you also to all of the parents, family and friends who attended the performance - we hope you enjoyed the show!
Canowindra High School have been busy, as they compete at the Western NSW Dance Festival.

MONTROSE House
Hello Readers and welcome to this month’s column. I finished off the month of May with a superb grazing lunch birthday party for Cath Fitzsimons 30th. It was a great day with a really loud crowd of people, and in the other room we had a luncheon for a group of tourism operators from all over NSW here to promote Canowindra, the vineyards, motels and B&B’s. They were very impressed by our town, its people and the various things on offer. I went to Thailand for two weeks of sunshine, cocktails and friendly people, with lots to see and do in Phuket and Surin Beach. The food was great and there were lots of temples that were very nice, although I am glad to be back home at Montrose. I missed my Canowindra people and it went from 31 degrees to 6 degrees, so bloody chilly! The Queens Birthday weekend I had lots of visitors stay. I hosted a dinner on Saturday night for 24, for Cameron Vickory, former Cowra boy who turned 40. It was a black tie evening and it was very elegant with people from Cowra, Orange, Canberra and Dubbo to celebrate this great blokes birthday. Queens Birthday on Monday I hosted a luncheon for the special day with a great group of Canowindra friends to celebrate Her Majesty’s Birthday. The men were all dressed in suits and the ladies in their best dresses. There were 26 in total and they all had a scrumptious lunch. I welcomed new minister Joy and her husband Max and also celebrated Marion Wilsons OAM with a special cake made by Jenny Middleton. Some of those present were Nancy, Pat and Melva Grant, Pam Dunford, Deb and Doug Rice, Bill Flannery, Penny Nash, Richard Glasson, Bill and Lorna Coachly, Rob and Pam Burns to name a few, and of coarse her ‘Grace’ good friend Muriel Yeo. It was a lovely day with lovely friends. It makes you appreciate how wonderful this town is and how lucky we are to live in it. I have lots of Christmas in July functions coming up. Keep busy, happy and kind to one another. Tommy x

One of the highlights of this year’s budget was the big increase in funding for our schools. It’s a huge step forward from where we were in this crucial sector. There is an $18.6 billion increase in new funding over the next 10 years, with $384 million for Calare. This is not pie in the sky stuff. This funding kicks in straight away. Every school in Calare will get a funding boost.
Why were changes necessary? Let’s break it down: •
•
Because as Gonski himself has said, his original funding plan had been well and truly corrupted. The last days of Julia Gillard were so shaky that they were writing cheques they knew they would never have to cash. They were in effect, throwing Monopoly money around, because none of it was ever funded. They ended up with a whopping 27 separate agreements. The worst of it was that this broken system wasn’t fair. It valued disadvantaged children in separate states differently. A child in one state who was suffering
disadvantage was worth less to the government in terms of spending than a child suffering the same disadvantage in another state. To my way of thinking, that’s not right. It sure as heck isn’t the Australian way. •
The whole system was bent totally out of shape and that’s why David Gonski has come back on the scene to make sure that his original vision is implemented. He has given this new and real Gonski funding the seal of approval, and he is personally making recommendations to how the funding is to be best implemented.
I said in my inaugural speech to the Federal Parliament that we needed a school funding system that recognised the relative disadvantage that country children often face. I think the critics should start giving a Gonski, and start supporting the real Gonski which is backed by Gonski himself. I have outlined in the table below how just a few schools in our area will benefit. Keep in mind that the states are traditionally responsible for funding state schools and these figures relate to Commonwealth funding only.

Empowering Women In Society The Country Women’s Association (CWA) is the largest women’s organisation in Australia and aims to improve the conditions of country women and children. The CWA was formed in 1992 when country women were fighting isolation and lack of health facilities. 25 years on and the group continue to empower women and bring people together. Canowindra CWA invite women from the community of Canowindra and surrounding areas to come and be apart of an organisation making a difference. “We are all about bringing local people
together to a safe and supportive environment,” said Fran French, CWA member. In today’s society we all still experience a degree of isolation, if not from where we live but from our ‘busy’ lives and the CWA are a means to meet people. “Todays focus is not all just hard work, it’s about learning new skills and going to events, enjoying the social side,” said Fran. Over the last couple of months the main focus of the Canowindra CWA was on revamping their hall, to create a small venue for services to come into Canowindra.
They now have podiatrist, massage therapist, physio, yoga, a childrens drama group and two church groups using the space. “The hall is to create a space in the community, for the community so we don’t have to travel, that’s what we want the hall to be,” said Fran. The CWA Hall now have had the main body renovated and a new kitchen installed. They are then in the process of doing outside repairs and putting in a disabled toilet. Continued on page 8
My House My Home Window Myths Busted There are several myths that exist when it comes to windows, so Glassplace are here to help you sort the fact from the fiction. Myth: You need Council or planning permission to replace windows. Fact: This is not true for most homeowners. Replacement of existing windows and doors (provided the opening size remains the same) does not require a planning permit, unless your home is heritage listed. Myth: Windows don’t have any effect on energy efficiency. Fact: Experts estimate that up to 70 percent of energy is lost through windows and doors, and that 90% of this heat loss oc-
curs through the glass. Myth: Double glazed windows work best. Fact: This is not true. Double glazed windows can work well in both hot and cold climates, reflecting energy back into the room, however Low-E Glass works very well in our climate. Also known as Pyrolytic, Smart glass™, or Comfort Plus™, it works in 3 ways. Firstly it reduces direct heat radiation from the sun, then it reduces the hot and cold energy transfer between the inside, and outside of your window. If you choose the tinted version, (grey or green) then it also cuts down glare. Low-E glass is also cheaper than double glazing.
Myth: Anyone can install windows. Fact: While technically true, not everyone can install windows correctly. Window installation is an acquired skill, so the more experience an installer has, the better the result will be. Issues that can arise from a poor installation can include leaking, drafts, and difficulty opening and closing. It is always recommended that you utilise the services of a professional window installer. If you are not confident installing windows, or are not sure where to start, we at Glassplace can help to find a licenced professional installer to help with designing and installing your new windows.

Upgraded Emergency Department Work has begun at the Canowindra Soldiers Memorial Hospital to build a new Emergency Department (ED), to improve the Ambulance and disability entrance. The new ED is being built in a different location to allow better access for patients and visitors. “Improvements to the Ambulance entrance will ensure that patients can be transported from Ambulance to the Hospital more quickly,” said Janice Rumph. The work taken out internally will include new paint, replacement of internal cabinets and equipment, along with an updated and clearer signage. There will also be an installation of a security facility with upgraded cameras and door access improved. “Works to improve access and security at the facility will ensure our patients and staff are safer so we have the best facility possible to deliver great patient care. The works will make a real difference to the local community,” Janice said. The new upgrade will be energy saving with solar PV and solar hot water panels, lighting upgrades, new air-conditioning units and bathroom and kitchen facilities will all be more environmentally friendly
and save energy. The Canowindra Soldiers Memorial Hospital ensure the community of Canowindra that there will be minimal disruptions throughout the year but ask that everyone bear with them as work is undertaken. The ED work is set to be complete by the end of this year 2017 and is being completed by Renanscent and local contractors. “This year is going to be a big one for Canowindra Hospital, and I’m looking forward to seeing the results of these works currently underway,” said Janice.
The Canowindra Soldiers Memorial Hospital will be receiving an upgrade to their Emergency Department.

Continued from page 7 CWA isn’t just on a local scale, it is global and money is often raised to help empower women and children all across the world, making a real difference to where it is needed the most. Over the years the CWA have gained many different names and meanings from the Cranky Women’s Association to the old ducks. The CWA women are far from this and are a friendly bunch of women making a difference in our communities. The CWA is certainly not just for the older generation, it is for all women who would like to be involved, make a difference, learn something new and to feel a part of something. “There are a lot of women on their own and it can be very hard to go out and socialise, you can feel quite isolated. We bring people together and give each other confidence to walk into a crowd of people,” said Fran. Come join in at their next meeting on Thursday the 22nd of June at 6.30pm for a 7pm meeting at the CWA Hall, or jump onto their website and send them an email. There is a CWA meeting every 4th Thursday of the month and all are welcome to come along. “CWA is all about brining you into contact with other people in the community and giving back. It is about making a better and stronger community, it’s also a lot of fun,” said Fran

The Women’s Bowls all enjoyed a delicious lunch supplied by the Club Restaurant, which we thank them for most sincerely. Vice-President Sheryn O’Malveney announced the members who had birthdays in April, May & June. Sheryn also congratulated Marion Wilson on receiving the OAM, on the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, it was well deserved. A presentation was then made by Shirley Robson to Margaret Gosper who is leaving to live in Iluka. The Triples Competition being held on 22nd and 23rd has been cancelled due to not enough teams nominated. Moyna Rue organised members to man our Street Stall being held on Saturday, 24th June.
