Percy the Pig with some of the volunteers helping out to push him home to Boorowa.

Percy Pushes Through Canowindra

Percy the Pig arrived in Canowindra on Tuesday afternoon about 3pm after a long hard push from Cargo. We found a number of the pig pushers relaxing in Memorial Park with their shoes off. There are over 120 “Pig Pushers” pushing Percy all the way from Orange back home to Boorowa this week. Each team is made up of 20 people who are rostered on each day for the massive 211km trek from Orange to Boorowa. The teams of pig pushers have come up with some interesting names and are made up of the 40 and Fit, Boorowa Rugby Club, Fit Farmers, Graincorp and the Redheads, who are from all over the countryside. Percy the Pig is all about raising money for the Country Education Foundation

(CEF). The CEF is a national not-for-profit organisation helping rural and regional youth access education, training and jobs through grants, scholarships, support services and resources that began in Boorowa in 1993. On Tuesday the team pushed Percy 24km from Cargo to Canowindra in very hot and dry conditions. The cold beer on tap at the Canowindra Hotel was very welcome when they rolled into town. Richard Fleming one of the pig pushers said “The whole idea behind Percy the Pig and the Country Education Fund is to raise money for kids in regional areas so that they can further their education in the city and then return to their regional areas and use their qualifications.”

Thanks for reporting our Easter Family Fun Day! Although I was handed the job of coordinator this year, the event is a true group effort, with many families and individuals contributing their time and money. While the event is an initiative of the churches in Canowindra, we were very blessed to have help even from those who don't 'go to church', but were content to serve others under Jesus' name. Canowindra High and Canowindra Public Schools also lent critical equipment, and Cabonne Council graciously allowed us to use Morris Park for the 4th year in a row. We had a great time throwing a party for the community, and while there would be no party without Jesus (because Easter is about who Jesus is and what he did), it is also true that there would have been no party without the community getting behind it, and I'm very grateful to all who had a hand in the day. Sincerely, David Bullock PS. This letter is prompted by the sen-

Vietnam War Images And New Arts Mentoring On Canowindra Arts 2018 Menu

Canowindra Arts Inc is opening its 2018 menu of shows and events with a graphic exhibition of 50-year-old Vietnam War photographs and the group’s second Arts Mentoring Program for local schoolchildren. The mentoring workshops, conducted by the group’s artistic director Sue Hodge, will run over 10 weeks from May 1 and have been made possible by a $3,000 funding grant by the Sally Foundation in Orange. “The foundation’s support enables us to continue the teaching program, which we launched last year to much success and acclaim, but with substantially more funds for equipment and other workshop costs,” Sue says. “This year we’re trying for a better mix of junior (10 to 13) and senior (14 to 16) participants, and would like to hear from more older students who want to learn the basics of painting or advance their skills beyond what they’ve already achieved.” Sue can be contacted by phone on 0419 571 765 or email at sue.h@cornerstone. edu.au. Classes are conducted at All Saints Anglican Church Hall. The Vietnam War exhibition, “Impressions of War,” teams the dramatic black and white photography of local writer and artist Derek Maitland, who was a correspondent in Vietnam from 1966-68, with paintings on

the theme by Canowindra Arts artists. It’s the first time Derek’s photos are being shown publicly since he, in his own words, “crawled out of the brutality and savagery” shortly after the massive Tet Offensive virtually overran South Vietnam 50 years ago. “But my images are not so much the blood and guts of war but a portrayal of the fighters on both sides and the Vietnamese civilians who were tragically caught in the middle,” Derek says. “There’s been much interest in the exhibition in Canowindra, particularly from the schools, and I’ll be presenting talks on the war to primary and high schools students.”

Fast forward 60 years and look how far this amazing place for young children has come! 2018 will see the Canowindra Pre-School Kindergarten Inc celebrate 60 years of service to the Canowindra community by hosting a Diamond Jubilee with everyone invited to attend. To be held at the Moorbel Hall on Saturday 19th May it is sure going to be a great celebration for everyone who has had something to do with the PreSchool over the past 60 years. With amazing food by Eat Your Greens, Eugowra and entertainment by the great band Nuthin’ 2 Serious it will be a great night.

After looking back through the old records it shows that fundraising has always been a major part of the Pre-School’s life and this Diamond Jubilee celebration will be no different. In the past the Pre-School has held Balls, Bush Dances, Trivia Nights, Fashion Parades, Melbourne Cup Luncheons, Reunion Dinners, Shopping Nights, Movie Nights and even Baby Shows. After being granted some funds from the government in 2017 the Pre-School has already completed stage 1 of its renovation however needs to raise more money to complete stage 2. Over the last 60 years the Pre-School has grown from being open only half a day per week to five days a week, extending from a one-unit Pre-School to a two unit Pre-School which means providing two class rooms rather than one separating the 3 and 4 year old children. The service now also offers Outside School Hours Care three days a week and recently added a playgroup on Friday’s for children aged 0-5years. Kinellar Ram 1st At Sydney Royal Easter Show Kinellar Stud were again very successful at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show. It was great to continue on with their success from the last two years at the Sydney Show, having previously taken out the Grand Champion White Suffolk Ram. Kinellar 17-060, which was born 3 April 2017 and is affectionately known as “Limo” due to his extreme muscling, was placed 1st in the heavily contested Production Ram Lamb Class which measures the carcass performance, growth and structure. This was an excellent result as it confirms the success in achieving the Stud’s breeding objectives. Kinellar “Limo” was also placed 1st in the April drop milk tooth ram lamb class. Students’ Safety Paramount Six peppercorn trees bordering Canowindra Public School will be removed in the interest of the safety of both school pupils and members of the community. After receiving advice that the trees are in a dangerous condition, Cabonne Council will carry out work shortly to remove the hazard. The Council’s Community Engagement and Development Manager Dale Jones

said the trees in Belmore Street are old and diseased. “Council has been informed that the trees are in poor condition and could fall without warning,” he said. Dale said “The safety of school students, pedestrians and motorists using Belmore Street is paramount.” Mr Jones said Council was always reluctant to remove trees but was acting in the interest of public safety.

Sheep Field Day To Provide Farmers With Latest Research And Products The much anticipated Sheep Field Day returns to the Australian National Field Day (ANFD) site near Orange in April. The Australian National Field Days’ Administration Manager Jayne West said the event on Thursday April 19th 2018 is an exciting addition to the Field Days’ calendar. “Last year’s inaugural Sheep Field Day attracted farmers from across NSW. The success of the day has cemented the event as an annual fixture. The Sheep Field Day creates a one-stop-shop for all sheep related products, meaning farmers can access the latest information and products all in one location, on the one day. There’ll be a variety of exhibitors at the event providing sheep producers with a unique opportunity to interact with the best in the field,” Mrs West said. “Exhibitors will be displaying automated drafting systems, sheep handlers, stockyard systems, animal health products, electronic ear tagging and livestock management systems, as well as nutrition, supplement feeding and pasture management.

“In addition to the variety of exhibitors, a number of information seminars will feature. Talks will include the much anticipated release of the MSM Stockfeeds’ Supplementary Feeding Trial results, along with a farmer feedback panel focusing on lamb feeding. Other talks include Ian Crafter from Atlex Stockyards who’ll discuss the evolution of the sheep yards and look at how animal psychology and precision technology continues to evolve the modern yards. Dr Kathryn Egerton – Warburton from the NSW DPI will give a presentation on sheep genetics and results from the whether trials currently being run in a variety of sites in NSW.” Exhibitor sites are available to all companies related to the sheep industry and can be booked by calling the ANFD office on 02 6362 1588. Gates open at 9am on Thursday April 19th and entry is free. Kiosk facilities will be available on the day. For further details contact the Australian National Field Day Office on 02 6362 1588.
