Winning Windows Announced

The annual Canowindra Phoenix Christmas in July competition has come to an end with the largest involvement to date. Gaskill Street was beautifully decorated with most businesses getting involved by filling their windows with an array of Christmas themed designs. The windows were judged on four different categories; creativity, originality, effort and street appeal with prizes given for the winner, runner-up and second runner-up, as well as a people’s choice award. This year’s winner was The Plague and I with a beautifully dressed window complete with snow, a chandelier and a patchwork quilt dressed mannequin. Runner-up was Canowindra Newsagency and second runner-up Rockstar Clothing. “We have had people coming from out of town just to see the street for Christmas

in July,” said Debbie Guihot of The Plague and I. The winners were awarded their prizes by Deputy Mayor of Cabonne Council, Cr Anthony Durkin. “It is a great, inspirational, community spirt lifting exercise and shows the dedication of the businesses to the Cabonne Shire,” said Cr Durkin. “It’s also encouraging other towns to do the same as it is a great drawcard to encourage people to visit our town.” This year Cabonne Council showed their support by sponsoring and donating the prizes for the winners which are gift vouchers of their choice to any local business meaning the money will be staying in Canowindra and promoting shopping locally. Thanks to all the businesses who participated, the town looked spectacular.

This year, as part of The Canowindra Phoenix’s annual Christmas in July window decorating competition, a colouring competition was introduced to encourage the children of Canowindra to be involved in the festivities. Entries were printed in two editions of the Canowindra Phoenix as well as being available from our Facebook page and were available to all the children of Canowindra. The competition was separated in to two categories with a section for the under five year olds and an over five year old category with a great amount of colouring entries brought in for display in the Canowindra Phoenix office window during the month of July. The competition was judged by Zoe and Harry Maynard, children of Canowindra Phoenix Publisher, Sarah Maynard. Zoe, aged 6, judged the older age group category and Harry, aged 4, judged the younger category. The winner in the under five year old category was Evie Daly and runner-up

was Ada Carpenter. The winner in the over five year old category was Hannah Gordon and runner-up was Emily Thomas. Thank you to all the children who entered in this year’s colouring in competition. The response was fantastic. The number of entries and involvement by all will guarantee that the competition will take place again next year. Thanks to Cabonne Council for their support in this year’s Christmas in July competitions by donating the prizes for our winners.

Unlock Your Potential

The time has come for young women in Canowindra to think about entering the 2018 Showgirl Competition. If you are between 18 and 25 years old this is an opportunity to enrich your life with a new experience. The program has been tailored to the theme of Unlocking Your Potential, and includes a range of events and activities. These kick off with an informal afternoon tea on Sunday, 12th August at Finns Store in Gaskill Street at 3pm. The aim of the event, open to everyone, is to answer your questions. There will be guest speakers, past showgirls to talk to and an information booklet. After applications have closed on 18th August, a showgirl development day will take place on Sunday, 19th August at the Canowindra Showground. The day is for all applicants and will focus on public relations skills and information about the showgirl program, as well as agriculture in general. Each girl will receive a showgirl shirt to be worn during the show weekend. On Sunday, 1st September there will be a working bee at the showgrounds to be attended by all applicants. The official showgirl interviews will take place on the weekend of 8th and 9th September followed by a formal garden party for all families and friends. The final event will be at the Canowindra Show on 21st and 22nd September when the applicants will be introduced and interviewed on stage. There will also be other official duties to attend to during the show. Other categories include the Jillaroos and Jackeroos for 6 to 12 year olds and junior showgirl for 13 to 17 year olds. All enquiries please phone Carolyn Austin on 0427 150 277.

Young Judges Workshop

Last Wednesday 20 Canowindra High School Agriculture students from Years 9, 10 and 11 travelled to Eugowra to attend a Young Judges Workshop. They joined 100 students from other schools around the district and participated in a number of sessions throughout the morning hosted by industry experts. Sessions were held on meat sheep, beef cattle, dairy cattle, grains, fleece, as well as fruit and vegetables. The students were instructed on the points to consider and check for while judging the livestock or produce, as well as the correct terminology that should be used when competing in any junior judging competitions. During the afternoon the students listened to a presentation on how to prepare and present the oral component of the competitions and were then able to put all their new skills to the test by competing in a number of competitions across the different categories. Congratulations to all the students who participated on the day, many of whom were successful in progressing to the oral presentation section of the competitions. An extra special mention goes to the following students who were lucky enough to place in the competitions and take home ribbons. Ella Gruessing, placed second in the Fleece Judging, Chloe Bellach and Darcy Merchant placed equal third in the Grain Judging and Talitha Stanley, took out first place in the Grains Judging.

The Youth League side played Peak Hill and came away with a big win 68-10. 3 points each went to Bailee Selten & Jaidan Gray, 2 points to Matt Ryan and 1 to Hayden Cummings. Lachlan Stevens was player’s player. Special mention goes to Bailee, Jaiden & Matt on backing up Peak Hill who unfortunately only had 10 players on the day. The First Grade side played against the spirited Eugowra Eagles. It was a close match from the kick-off with the Tigers edging out the winners in the final five minutes to take away the win 36-34 and prove themselves as fierce competitors in the finals rounds. 3 points went to Aaron Earsman, who also received player’s player, 2 points each to Lochie Robinson and Kain Earsman and 1 point each to Brydon Hughes & Jayden Brown. Special mention to the volunteer team in the canteen, bar, set up, pack away and everywhere in between. Hope the wonderful Sponsors had a fabulous day, thank you for all of your support throughout the year!
