St Edward’s Students enjoying the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo last week.
St Edward’s Students Go Zoo-Crazy!
Last Friday the Infants students (Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2) of St Edward’s Primary School in Canowindra were treated to an excursion to the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. The Phoenix caught up with students Oscar and Fergus Townsend who were happy to write the below story about their day. On Friday all of St Edwards Infants got up really early to get on a bus and go to Dubbo Zoo. We got to the zoo, we went to Monkey Island to watch the monkeys play while we ate our fruit. Lucky there was lots of water or those monkeys would have snatched our bananas. We then started our long walk around the zoo. We saw hippos, zebras, meerkats, otters, water buffalos, lions, tigers, koalas, tortoises and giraffes.
Oscar’s favourite animals were the elephants, there was even a brand new baby elephant, he was really adorable. Fergus thought the Bongos were really cool, they had long sharp horns and funny stripes on their body. After we ate our lunch with the noisy Siamangs we went to the Billabong Camp where Zoo Keeper, Kirsty, told us interesting facts about the animals and showed us some lizards. Did you know that elephants are the only mammals that can’t jump? And we both thought the Two Headed Shingled Back Lizard was pretty awesome, We then got back on the bus for the long drive home. We had a very very fun day at the zoo and learnt lots of new facts about the animals. By Oscar and Fergus Townsend

Over my working life in providing radio communications for exploration companies, I was told by senior staff of a company whose name is more aligned to a sea mollusc shell, that the in-house formula for wholesale petrol costing was the base price per barrel in USD being converted to one-cent-per-dollar (again in USD terms) which lead in this to case a price of around USD68 cents per litre (or about AUD96cents per litre at today’s 30th August 2018 price). When you factor in the usual transport cost of 30,000lt single trailer from depot (SYD) to Canowindra over 320km at AUD1.25/km return (640km) it means a delivered price of about 96+37.5=133.5/lt. Adding to that a retail margin of about 8% will lead to a pump price of about $1.44 per litre. I do not know what the pump price in Canowindra is at present, but your readers could make their own assessment. No, I am not a major oil company apologist and I pay whatever the pump price in
Perth is (varying between $1.28 and $1.52) but I have the advantage of shopping around for petrol originating in Singapore when our governments (of all persuasions) has allowed local refineries to shut down to leave us at the mercy of offshore supply economics. Wake up Australia. Robert Sherwood Perth WA

Sydney Weekender Program In Cowra
Sydney Weekender paid Cowra a visit last week to film a segment on spectacular views and delicious produce in the Cowra Region. The segment is set to show off some of the very best that Cowra and Canowindra have to offer including the Cowra Japanese Garden, canola fields, a unique rustic farm stay and the popular Cowra Wine and Forage Tours. “It was a delight to host the team from Sydney Weekender in Cowra last week,” said Cowra Tourism Manager, Belinda Virgo. “This visit offered Cowra Tourism the perfect opportunity to promote visitation to Cowra and Canowindra during Spring. The segment will feature our Cowra Wine and Forage Tours including visits to Rosnay Organic Farm and Wallington Wines Cellar Door where guests enjoy fine organic wine and delicious pizza’s cooked onsite in their wood fired pizza oven,” Belinda continued. This marks just one in a number of recent media visits to the region, with Cowra hosting journalists from The Sydney Morning Herald, Roam Magazine, Australian Country Magazine and more.
"Media visits like these are an important opportunity for us to showcase our region, we have so much to offer and so many stories to tell," said Kurt Overzet, Events and Marketing Officer at Cowra Tourism. "With such a diverse range of tastes, sights and experiences, Cowra and surrounds is a destination that offers something a little different, it truly is the great escape," he continued. The program is set to air this Sunday the 16th of September at 5:30pm on Channel 7.

GRAND FINAL FOR CANOWINDRA SENIOR HOCKEY TEAM The Canowindra Senior Hockey Team, sponsored by the Canowindra Services Club, concluded a fantastic season of hockey on the weekend competing in the Grand Final against Cowra Bowling Club. Canowindra were the highest point scorers over the season, but were defeated on the day 5-1. Local Canowindra High School teacher Andrew Phelan managed to score the only goal, despite numerous attempts by many other team members during the game. Canowindra Services Club is one of five teams in the Cowra Seniors Hockey competition. Mick Flannery was the captain, organiser and strategist, and this year also received the Players Player award from the team. This is a mixed competition which really encourages a family environment and the senior team includes players from 14 years old to 60+ years old. The team would like to thank Canowindra Services Club for their sponsorship this year, the new shirts and socks were well received. Also thanks to Mick Flannery, all our team members for great sportsmanship and dedication, and Cowra Hockey for their ongoing commitment to the game of hockey and local competitions. By Ash Wright
time, a score that very accurately showed how well matched these two teams were. After the coach’s pep talk to dig deep and hog the ball, Canowindra pushed into the second half with a renewed passion to get to the ball first. All players showed exceptional skills, passing and teamwork, finally producing a goal off the stick of Ronan Gailey, after coming out of the goalie position in the first half. Mac Webster, Hayden Hewitt, Claire Wright, Julia Wright and Sammy Austin continued to work hard in the mid field and were supported by wingers Isabelle Lynch and Sienna Adams. Tom Mitchell provided solid defence both as a back and second half goalie. Amelia Hewitt was a reliable and hardworking inner, positioning herself well throughout the game. Iya Shultz was switched on all game and ready for every ball on the goal post. The game ended with Canowindra winning 1-0. Canowindra wishes to commend Bryant’s on their sportsmanship and skill – the game could easily have gone either way. Congratulations to Mac Webster who was selected Player’s Player for the competition, Claire Wright for Most Improved Player and Hayden Hewitt for the Coaches Award. By Iya Shultz
