Rural Achiever Program Promoting Agricultural Industry

Lachlan Patterson from Canowindra has just spent an amazing 8 days at the Sydney Royal Easter Show as part of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) Rural Achiever Award program. The RAS Rural Achiever Award is a statewide leadership program run by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW to recognise future young leaders who are working hard to make a significant contribution to their local community and to rural Australia. The Award aims to acknowledge the achievements of young people (20 – 29 years of age) in primary industry and rural communities. After winning the local Cowra competition last year Lachlan applied to be a part of the program in Sydney and was selected from a group of 20 after being interviewed. The 8 Young Rural Achievers spent the

week at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and also included visits to Government House, Parliament House and spending time with National Party politicians around Sydney. Lachlan was part of the stewarding at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in three categories including Horticulture for Dahlia judging, Merino Sheep and Mohair Goats. “It was great to be involved in all aspects of the show, especially behind the scenes with the stewards and also all the networking events we attended,” said Lachlan. James Cleaver, a Drought Co-ordinator for the DPI in Dubbo won the competition and will now be a Rural Ambassador for NSW for 2019. “I learnt so much and it was great to spend the week in Sydney with like-minded, passionate agricultural advocates,” said Lachlan.

Hello Editor, An update so far on our trip right around Oz taking at least 6 months and around 30,000 kms. We left on Monday 1st April and headed to Swan Hill/Lake Boga visiting elderly relatives. Deb caught a carp at the lake, we also visited the Swan Hill Pioneer Museum, a must see for those interested in our early days. There is an old paddle steamer there called the Gem within the museum area which my friend from Swan Hill and myself were on back in 1963 when towed on the Murray River from down Piangal way to be permanently moored at the Museum. We left Swan Hill for Adelaide visiting more relatives. After Adelaide we headed to Port Augusta, sightseeing and fishing for 4 days then further down south to Coffin Bay. Great town for sightseeing fishing and eating fish and oysters. On Monday 15th April we arrived at Ceduna staying at the Big4 Caravan Park for the next week. So far caught no fish here yet but plenty of time. At the Port area at Ceduna they load large ships with local salt heading overseas. We bought 2 dozen unshucked oysters for $28 and 5 pieces fil-

To the Editor, Wonderful piece in your words on ANZAC and all. I have my service medals now and while they are generic in the sense I did not engage in conflict, I am proud of the little service I did for Australia. Thanks for your 'editorial' which draws attention to those of whom we owe a great deal for our present stable lifestyle and we all should remember that short-term sight has no place in a long-term contemplation of the Australia we want to live in. WEDDING Bells

Meg Irvine and Luke Tidswell were married on Saturday 30 March at their property "Plenty". The bride looked gorgeous in her dress featuring a lace bodice and full tulle skirt and the relaxed country theme was evident from the start, as she walked towards her groom wearing boots and gum leaves in her hair. Meg was attended by maid of honour Nicole Spolding and bridesmaids Laura Harrison, Maddie Breen, and

Rhianna Mactaggart. The girls looked beautiful in full length navy dresses, boots and denim jackets to ward off the freezing wind on what was a very cold autumn day. Luke was attended by his brother Kurt as best man and groomsmen Matt McAuliffe, George Brien and Clinton Tidswell. The new Mr and Mrs Tidswell honeymooned for a week on Hamilton Island. Sunday Sessions At The Bowlo With Daryl Byrne

Priscilla Freeman and Canowindra Librarian Rossanne Holmes are looking forward to the upcoming Tech Savvy Seniors Computer Classes.

Tech Savvy Seniors Computer Classes

Canowindra Library is pleased to announce a continuation of their computer help programs. Tech Savvy Seniors are free computer classes presented in partnership with Telstra, the NSW Government and the State Library covering subjects like smartphones, tablets, internet, social media and photos. Tech Savvy is designed to give older people or those who have missed out on learning to use technology, the opportunity to develop the skills and confidence to use technology for socialising, accessing services or conducting personal business. Canowindra Librarian Rossanne Holmes said it is important for seniors to have skills with digital technology to keep them connected with family and friends, and remain independent in accessing government and other online services. “People are really grateful when we can help solve a technology problem,” Rossanne said. “We are pleased when people are able to communicate with friends and family when they are far away or use library resources online like borrowing an audio-

book. Tech Savvy classes are held in small groups with extra assistance to help people individually.” “Some people can struggle when faced with complicated online facilities like email, Facebook or online forms. Tech Savvy Seniors can help them to make sense of this online world and share their learning with others who have similar experiences,” continued Rossanne. Tech Savvy Seniors Classes at Canowindra Library will take place on 6 June from 11.30am-1pm for Introduction to Tablets and on 13 June from 11.30am-1pm for Introduction to Smartphones. On both days, the 6th and 13th June technology mentors will be available to book half hour individual sessions from 2pm. You can bring your own device and get help with some of your technology questions. They will also introduce you to a self-help website www.beconnected.esafety.gov.au It offers free mini courses to help you get the most out of your device. Please book your place by calling Canowindra Library on 6344 1796.

This Sunday 5th May from 3-6pm the Canowindra Community Bowls and Recreation Club will welcome a true character and fun showman to the Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo, Daryl Byrne. Daryl not only rolls the bowling greens in his home town of Molong and visits as a regular competitor in Canowindra …..This bowler has been playing lead guitar, lead singing in solo-duo-country bands and rock bands for 25 years! Daryl has played with and supported amazing acts such as Steve Ford & The Flange, Melinda Schneider and Adam Brand. These are no small gigs. Also on his list of credentials. He was lead guitarist and singer in the “Patsy Cline” touring band in Brisbane plus lead guitarist/ vocals for the “American Pedal Steel Convention”. Daryl has also been the weekend opener as solo and rock band at the ABBA festival for the past three years and now plays all around NSW in various formats and styles. Don’t miss this performance. POEM... Richard Statham opened the Canowindra Arts exhibition “Escape to the Country” with this great poem he wrote. Little do I know from the start about art, nor painting or curating. So for better or worse, I thought I'd commit these few words to verse. Max taught me how, and now, at least cos I'm reading, I won’t be stuck for words.

the perspective of the artists trying to break free visually in expressing what they see or feel inside....and for visitors to the show, definitely a distraction from their reality or routine, allowing them for a few moments to step outside their own square......and maybe dream.

For who knows, when soon there are thousands here for the balloon challenge There may be a stampede to buy local art. If supply meets demand, that's all very nice But economists say, if the reverse is the case, then jack up the price!

This town is quite renown For the artists who live here and around. Our good friend Derek, sadly now passed Had a vision which came about fast To create this art-space from first to last.

Last October at the inaugural show, there were eight artists on the go. Isn't it great to know that lively talents like these are willing, for perhaps just a shilling To submit their work for us to know?

Arthur and Sue, then Osla came on board too. A trio with passion, vision and a sense of mission.

Water colour, gwarsh, oil, acrylic, pen and ink, print.....don't you think it's fine to see the line, colour and form on paper, canvas, card or hard board..... Wonderful images born.

While on the subject of art There's music too. On the 28th, less than 2 weeks away, Sydney Con will be here to play. For David Miller AM, it's his 23rd concert here on that April day. This year there's a string quintet, which David says is the very best yet. They'll play Beethoven, Mozart, Holst and Dvorak and a final piece called Bach in the Dark. You can buy your tickets at Finns Old Store, otherwise, just at the door.

Sue an artist true, and Arthur Falconer to help'er, With strategic planning and, would you believe, here, even floor sanding. Then came Osla with rosters and manning. There are no doubt others we may not know Who help with whatever, to make a great show. All volunteers we thank And Wallingtons for the wine. God we thank too for the sky is blue and the weather is fine. The flip side of that is the fact that drought is still here and the country's a mess. Gatherings like this and music help us deal with the stress. Escape to the country eh? Google dictionary says: Escape means breaking free from confinement or control....or, A form of temporary distraction from reality or routine. Both these definitions seem to sit well with what we are trying to tell here. Both from

Now there's Derek's photos Yes, from the Vietnam war A perpetual display behind that door. In memory of Derek, who we loved so well. Did you know.....well you oughta.... he was almost killed by a flaming mortar. Yeah, what a legend was that guy. So sad for us all that he had to die. So Jan, you lost your man, And now you have us all as friends To help you out, if ever we can. If this poem's showing a bit of leverty, a bit of mirth It must not detract from the project's worth. The art is stunning, even if some of the pottery's poor. So let's keep it running..... keep open the door.

So now I'll close with thanks, best wishes and cheers To those who chose to come and partake. Make no mistake, this sort of gig keeps our town's spirit big. Without further ado, I declare to you, the show is open! Tell your friends to come too. And, by the way I'd just like to say Have a good look around and take it all in. There's good value here, and margins are thin. Bargain a little if you decide to buy. Take a risk, give it a try. In some of these works you may care to invest A speculator's dream could be put to the test. If the price is too high and your bundle's too thin, Just use you card, if you can remember your PIN.

COMMUNITY Notices The Anglican and Uniting Churches of Canowindra and surrounding districts Phone 6344 1643 Every Thursday 10.00am Service at Peace Uniting Church Canowindra. Mike Harrison, Warrant Office Geoffrey Coady and Ken Perry after the ANZAC Day Service in Canowindra.

Anzac Day Thank You

The Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch would like to thank everyone for their participation in Anzac Day Services 2019. We estimated over 300 people attended the Dawn Service with many visiting from out of town for the Balloon Festival. The march and main service was again well attended even though it was during school holidays. In a town of only 2,000 residents it is a testament to the spirit of ANZAC that is evident in our town. This year’s guest speaker was Warrant Office Geoffrey Coady who grew up in Canowindra, and I am sure his Mum and Dad enjoyed having him home on leave. It was also wonderful to see some of our current serving personnel home with their families to commemorate this special occasion. Although Anzac Day is organised by the Canowindra RSL Sub-Branch it would not be possible without the assistance of so many from our community. The Sub-Branch would like to thank the Canowindra Services and Citizens Club for their continued support, not only on Anzac Day but throughout the year. We also thank the Senior Leaders from Canowindra High

School for assisting to serve breakfast after the Dawn Service, Lawrence’s IGA for the donation of bread, margarine and all important Vegemite for the Dawn Service breakfast, Canowindra Fire Brigade who every year help to set up the Park with tables and chairs, the Rivers Rd RFS Brigade assisting with closing the road for the march and the Canowindra and Cowra Police who assist us with the safety of the march. Thank you also to Dei Curtis and Canowindra High School for the use of the piano and to Helen Payten who played for us this year. To Con from Canowindra Taxi Service, who provides transport for those who can no longer march to still participate in the march, to Warren Hogan for driving the jeep, kindly lent by Ann Vincent. Robert Byrnes and Richard Statham, our drum corps and to all those who joined in the march. Thank you to Cabonne Council for always having the Park in good condition for the day, and to the members of the SubBranch who, with me, work to make the day the best it can be. We moved away for a couple of years but decided to come back. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I am self employed as a plumber. I enjoy doing different things every day and love a good challenge. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I usually have a few cold ones and spend time with family and friends. What are you really good at? Being organised. What is your pet hate? Rude and arrogant people. If you could have a super power what would it be and why? To be able to fly. It would be more interesting than walking around. Tell us about your best holiday ever? It would have to be when we went to Vanuatu about 9 years ago just to see the different cultures and there way of life was really good. What makes your day? Seeing how excited my kids get when I get home from work always makes my day. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? I am a 5th generation plumber in my family.

For those of you who are frequent users of social media, you will have noticed that there is a resurgence of indoor or house plants being used as effective and “must have” decorator items in our homes. Many will remember this craze in the 1970’s but only had magazines to inspire us. Plants used this way come in many forms which in their natural environment have evolved because of their need for water or other nutrients or protective characteristics for survival. For example a cactus, has a plump structure allowing it to store water and expand – this can be a measure for the house plant owner to use when assessing frequency of watering. Owners of house plants may not be aware that the position of the plant is not so important in terms of its decorative value but more about its survival in an unnatural environment. Make sure that you understand the needs of the plants you buy. Lots of customers new to gardening are attracted to plants because of the “hype” generated through social media and don’t consider the important aspects of plant care. This can be expensive and require replacement of plants sooner than expected or that the hip pocket can cope with. When considering location of your house plants, the sunlight (direct or indirect), warmth, humidity, drafts and air flow, size and ease of watering or feeding all need careful thought and planning. If you are placing your plant in the kitchen, be mindful of the heat build up when cooking and the changes in room temperature. The bathroom will provide humidity for ferns (fishbone fern, asparagus plants, spider plants, weeping fig or palms) but there needs to be a good light source as well. Don’t place thorny or spikey plants in your bathroom – for obvious reasons! A living room is usually light and warm so provides a great spot for your new house plant, small indoor tree (palms) or a lush collection of plants with colour in winter (hippeastrums) providing an interesting display. Most house plants have care instructions which need to be followed carefully. Choose plants that suit your budget, have enough space for growth, and can be displayed decoratively in a suitable pot that enhances the plant and style of the room. By Ian Rogan

RUGBY UNION

Although the ladies side didn’t come out with the win they showed great improvement once again. Unfortunately losing to Orange Emus 63-0. Newbie Laura showed outstanding skills for her first time ever playing rugby union. In the second half the Orange Emus let some of their ladies play with us to increase the numbers to 14 each side, this was a great experience. This weekend the ladies travel to Dubbo to play the Rhinos. Unfortunately the men’s side also went down 38-7 to Geurie. Best and Fairest points went to Lachlan Davis – 3, Dan Friend – 2, and 1 point to Bailey Mannix. Players Player went to Dan Friend and a great first game he had. Kenny Turnbull scored the only try and what a great try that was, with a chip and chase to himself. This week the men’s side travel to Molong to play the Molong Magpies kick off is at 3:15pm.
