Andrew GEE MP FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE
Your Country, Your Voice RECORD FUNDING FOR OUR SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS DON'T BELIEVE THE SCARE CAMPAIGNS The Australian Government has a committed record funding for our public schools and hospitals.
SCHOOLS • Record school funding of $307.7 billion for State, Catholic and Independent Schools. • Every school in Calare gets a funding boost from the extra $11.6 billion allocated to schools in NSW.
ADDITIONAL DROUGHT MEASURES ANNOUNCED Helping our farming families and their communities deal with the devastating effects of drought has been a real focus of the government. As part of the government’s immediate and long-term drought response, we have committed nearly $6 billion, growing to over $7 billion, in assistance, including additional funding and improvements to existing support. This is now the biggest drought response in Australia’s history. Further measures announced by the government include: • Invest $3.9 billion in the future Drought Fund to prepare for future droughts. The fund will grow to $5 billion over the next decade and enable investment of $100 million per year in water infrastructure and drought resilience • Continue to ensure the Farm Household Allowance is fit for purpose, making the $5 million farm assets test for Farm Household Allowance permanent. • Create a new restocking and replanting concessional loan through the Regional Investment Corporation (RIC).
• This record funding is backed by David Gonski himself.
• Establish a $7 million Drought Communities Small Business Support Program.
HOSPITALS
• Provide extra support by providing $1 million each to an additional 14 local council areas experiencing severe drought through the Drought Communities Program.
We have delivered record public hospital funding across Australia rising from $13.3 billion when Labor was last in office to $21.2 billion in this year’s budget. Locally, the indisputable fact is that federal funding for the Western NSW Local Health District has also increased every year from $92.6 million under Labor in 2013 to $198.4 million in 2018 (growing by 114.1%) and will increase to $285.5 million by the end of the new national hospitals agreement in 2024-25. In Calare, the Government has provided record funding to the region’s local health districts. We’ve funded a new medical school and a new medical research facility (a combined investment of $40 million), we’ve just delivered a brand new MRI licence for Lithgow, which is worth millions of dollars each year in subsidised scans, plus a new headspace service for the town.
It’s vitally important we keep ramping up drought support as conditions worsen. I have made many speeches to the Federal Parliament calling for this to happen and while there is more work to do, this latest announcement is positive and welcome news.
CANOWINDRA AGLOW FOR INTERNTIONAL BALLOON FESTIVAL
Andrew is pictured with Graham and Jan Kerr at the Balloon Glow!
One of the highlights of the Central West’s calendar is the Canowindra International Balloon Challenge and of course, the Balloon Glow. The economic boost to the area in a time of drought, is enormous. Balloon pilots from seven countries competed in the Challenge and thousands came to see the Glow. 160 volunteers helped out.

The Drought Ride
Thursday 9 May 2019 Page 5
YOUR HEALTH Matters
Residents Reminded To Get Their Flu Shot
Over the course of the weekend from Friday 31st May – Sunday 2nd June 2019 a number of cyclists will be riding 300km through Central West NSW to boost spending in rural communities affected by drought. With two ride distance options on day one and a single return ride option on day two cyclists will cover a total of 300km over the weekend. Not only will the cyclists be riding through the direct path of drought stricken land they will be stopping in affected towns suffering from the hardship of the drought. Itinerary:
Three of the 2018 Canowindra Showgirl Competition entrants at the Show.
Unlock Your Potential!
• Friday 31st May – Arrive in Molong for a briefing followed by dinner and drinks. All cyclists are encouraged to arrive before midday and head out to spend a little time and money visiting some local towns. Stay overnight in Molong.
The Canowindra Showgirl Competition are excited to announce a skills development day to be held on 28th July 2019 for junior and senior showgirls! Following the 2018 showgirl competition program, a number of entrants expressed the desire to further develop public speaking skills, interviewing skills and resume writing skills. So the Canowindra Showgirl competition organisers have teamed up with Sarah Jehan, a Canowindra local and ASC NextGeneration to provide all entrants with further personal development skills, to not only assist them in the local Showgirl program, but to also give them skills for life. This event is open to all 2018 Showgirl entrants, and is highly recommended to local women wishing to be involved in the upcoming 2019 Canowindra Showgirl program. So save the date, 28th JULY 2019. This is an event not to be missed!
• Saturday 1st June – After a morning coffee, depart for a ride of approximately 150km with a shorter 100km option on offer. Cyclists will stop in each small community and employ local organisations and businesses to put on a morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. In addition to the money spent, donations will be made as cyclists travel through these communities. • Saturday night – Stay overnight in Canowindra. Main team dinner with representatives from a number of the small surrounding villages where a funding cheque will be presented. • Sunday 2nd June – Ride back to Molong via Orange through a number of small communities.
The Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) community is being reminded to get their flu vaccine with the launch of the 2019 flu campaign last week. WNSWLHD Public Health Manager, Priscilla Stanley said, “With more than 9,600 confirmed influenza cases in NSW already this year, people should not delay and organise their flu jabs either at the GP or pharmacist”. “One million flu vaccines have now been delivered across the State.” Pregnant women, young children, the elderly and all Aboriginal people will be a major focus of this year’s flu campaign. Free flu vaccines are available for pregnant women, Aboriginal people, those aged over 65, and anyone with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease. Hospitalisation rates for influenza are highest in young children with recent national figures showing about 100 per 100,000 in those aged six to 23 months. Ms Stanley outlined the importance of receiving an annual influenza vaccination as the best means of protecting yourself. “While we might all take the flu for granted as a common winter disease, it can be deadly,” LHD Ms Stanley said. “In 2017, we had a significant flu season where more than 650 people died across the state. We cannot afford to be complacent.” The NSW Government has invested about $130 million in the 2018-19 Immunisation Program budget, including Commonwealth and state vaccines. In addition to booking a flu shot, people are reminded that to help reduce the spread of flu, sneeze into your elbow, wash your hands regularly and stay home if sick.

Zero Tolerance For Drink Drivers
Drivers caught drink-driving will lose their license immediately and be slugged with a nearly $600 fine under a tough new penalty regime to come into force later this month. From May 20, first time, low-range drinkdrivers will be slapped with an on-thespot suspension of their licence for three months and a fine of $561. Roads Minister Andrew Constance said NSW is taking a "zero-tolerance" approach to drink and drug-driving. “This means anyone caught drink-driving in NSW, at any level, including low-range, can now lose their licence immediately”, the minister said in a statement last week. Drivers found with drugs in their system will face the same penalties if the offence is confirmed by laboratory analysis. Some 68 people died in alcohol-related crashes on NSW roads last year. Drug-driving resulted in a similar number of deaths. Constance said it was a big concern that a majority of people caught drink driving would record a non-conviction when their matter was heard in court.
REMEMBERING THE FALLEN WW1 MEMORIAL GROVE
"That means no loss of licence, no fine attached," said Constance. "We must recognise the dangers of driving on our roads, the unfortunate loss of life, our road toll this year which is up a little so far and we want to do everything we can to make sure people get from point A to point B without losing their life or being injured for life," Constance said.
On Saturday 25 May 2019, Cowra Council with the assistance of Local Land Services and Cowra RSL will host a ceremony and the planting of a grove of trees honouring the local men and women who served and fell during WW1. The commemoration will commence at 9.00am on Evans Street where descendants of the fallen men and women, and those who wish to honour the sacrifice made by them, may take part in planting a tree for each fallen service personnel. Of the 560 men and women who served in the First World War, 77 did not return and a tree will be planted in honour of each of these service men and women. The tree planting will be followed by a Mayoral reception and morning tea at 10.30am to be held at Cowra Council. For more information, please contact Kate Alberry or Cassandra Gailey on (02) 6340 2040. RSVP by May 20 to attend. For a list of the fallen, please visit www.cowracouncil.com.au
Low range drink drivers in NSW will automatically lose their licence under tough new laws.

May is Macula Month May is Macula Month, and a good reminder that if you are over 50 you should have regular macula health checks. The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina that deals with fine detail. A healthy macula is vital for good vision. Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease affecting the macula causing central vision loss making it difficult to read, recognise faces, watch TV and even obtain a driver’s license. MD is the leading cause of blindness in Australia. It is more common as we age, and the risk increases if there is a family history of macula problems or of smoking. At Hansen Eyecare Plus Parkes we have the gold standard equipment, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to help detect MD as early as possible. Ring or call in for an appointment.
