DAROO LAUNCH…Alf Cantral, Cabonne Daroo Business Awards Committee, Mayor Kevin Beatty, Daroo the Platypus, Councillor Libby Oldham, Chair of Cabonne Daroo Business Awards Committee and Lindy Crossley, Cabonne Daroo Business Awards Committee at the launch of the 2019 Daroo Business Awards.
Nominate Now For 2019 Daroo Business Awards
The quality and diversity of businesses in Cabonne Shire will be showcased by the 2019 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards which were launched on Tuesday 28 May 2019. Acknowledged as one of the major events on the regional business calendar and a model for business awards in rural Australia, the Daroos recognise the achievements and contributions of Cabonne businesses and their employees. The coveted Best Business in Cabonne and 16 other category winners will be announced at a gala dinner at Manildra on Friday 1 November 2019. The theme of this year’s awards is Thriving Through Adversity and a new category has been added this year to recognise businesses that have met the challenges of the crippling drought the
region has been experiencing. Cabonne Mayor Kevin Beatty said the awards acknowledge businesses and organisations that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in service or management. “The profile of the awards has grown substantially since their inception in 2000 and, as well as being highly sought by a range of businesses, organisations and individuals, the Daroos have become a blueprint for awards in several regional areas,” Cr Beatty said. Nominations are now open and close on 30 June 2019. Nomination forms are available at various points in Cabonne villages including the Canowindra Newsagency and can also be obtained by contacting Central West Business HQ on 6362 0448 or emailing daroo@becbiz.com.au

THUMBS... THUMBS UP A big thumbs up to Mr Ferguson at Canowindra High School who had his head shaved last week in support of the SRC's McGrath Foundation Fundraiser. This is an amazing thing to do, especially when it's so cold outside! Well done also to Julia who did a great job with the shaver!
THUMBS UP To the Gooloogong ladies who knit our trauma teddies and animals for Canowindra Hospital – well done and a big thank you!
Mandy Townsend, St Edward’s P&F President with Peter Watt and Michelle Fisher from IGA.
Beth Gordon, Canowindra Public School P&C President with IGA’s Peter Watt and Michelle Fisher.
Lawrence’s IGA in Canowindra continues to give back to the community through their Community Chest Program, raising $6,185.46 for community organisations. This year’s beneficiaries are Canowindra Public School P&C, St Edward’s P&F and The Age of Fishes Museum. All were overwhelmed with the support received from IGA and the community. Mandy Townsend from St Edwards P&F said, “ The money will go towards new whiteboard tables for the infants room, sports balls and netball shirts. We are just blown away with the support from Johnny Lawrence and IGA. It’s just amazing”. Beth Gordon President of Canowindra Public School P&C was also ecstatic and said, “We are aiming to resurface our level 2 play area with Kangaroo Courts. It is a big project, so this will help greatly!!!” “We are putting the money towards building 11 educational, interactive, moving, laser cut metal panels depicting life on Earth through time, which will be placed around the time line area. Each one metre, metal panel will depict the organism living on earth at a particular time in history. The panels are
upright and will have a spinning centre for children to play with, this project would not be possible without this contribution from IGA,” said Anne Clark, Manager of The Age of Fishes Museum. John Lawrence was pleased to hear that they could make such a difference through the Community Chest Program, where people have either bought community chest products or specials throughout the year. “All of the groups this year are worthy recipients. It is good to see the money going back into the community through school and community activities,” John Lawrence said.

Drought Poem: 10-year-old Toby Stephens from Canowindra Public School submitted the following poem to The Daily Telegraph explaining what lives are like living in a drought. Decreasing stock and grain. Rural communities are restricted on water “Ooh” we only get 5mm. Umbrellas forgotten what they look like. Gee the drought is bad. How can our community help? Too many silos are empty. Saving money and water can help everyone in a drought.

The Canowindra Baroquefest will receive $5,000 in funding through the latest Orange Regional Arts Foundation grant round. This funding will be used to bring Adhoc Baroque from Canberra and to support the extensive Community Education Program. The Orange Regional Arts Foundation is a community company, established in 1984 when community members contributed their own money which was then invested so that the interest on the investments could be used to support the arts in Orange. “ORAF have been generous with funding assistance since Baroquefest's inception in 2015. It gives us confidence that this Canowindra based festival is perceived to make a valuable contribution to the cultural diversity of the region and it helps to keep ticket prices for truly world class music at an affordable level for locals and visitors,” said Richard Statham, Chairman of Baroquefest. Today, The Orange Regional Arts Foundation continues to provide ongoing support for arts and cultural development through a submission process with closing dates on the 30th March and 30th September. Applications are assessed by the Board against the Foundations Funding Principles: Projects that take place in Orange and Region (Orange, Blayney and Cabonne Council areas); show excellence and innovation; have a lasting impact and benefit the community as a whole and show long-term sustainability. Since its establishment the Orange Regional Arts Foundation, through membership funds, has given more than $700,000 to support the arts in Orange. Membership involves a gift of $250 per year for 4 years, with all gifts being tax deductable. “By becoming a member of the Orange Regional Arts Foundation you are investing in your family’s future and taking some responsibility for the benefits available to us all who live in the Orange community,” said Meg Simpson, Chairperson, Orange Regional Arts Foundation.

Premier Poll Dorset Show On In Cowra
The 33rd Bromar NSW Dorset Championships will be held in Cowra on June 14 and 15 from 9am each day at the Showground. Entries are steadily coming in from a large region of NSW including the New England, Boorowa, Crookwell and Ariah Park. Bromar is again the major sponsor of the NSW Dorset Championships and has been for the past few years, this year donating a lick feeder. This year the Chief Steward Roger Traves would like to thank sponsors including The Land, Clearwater Tanks and Troughs, Clipex, Zoetis, Birbac, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Allan Gray & Co, Cowra Council, Ceva Animal Health Products, Advance Animal Nutrition Forbes, McClintocks, Forbes Ag n Vet, Fox and Lilly, Bryton Wool, Stockscan, Lachlan River Produce, Bottlemart Canowindra, Pine Walla, Armdale Poll Dorset Stud, Australian Poll Dorset Association, Claremont, Simbah, Australian Dorset Horn Association, Central West Region Poll Dorset Association, Gererdan Poll Dorest Stud and Springwaters Poll Dorset Stud. Hamo Engineering are sponsors of the Breeders Dinner on Friday night where several awards will be presented including the NSW Member of the Year. Continuing on from 2018 increases have been made to the June classes (born after 1st June 2018) to include junior, intermediate and senior champion ram. The Championships will also continue a Novice Ram Lamb and Ewe Lamb class, in previ-
ous years it was just Ram Lamb and Ewe Lamb Class. This will encourage new and younger breeders and schools to enter this section. “We pride ourselves on a relaxed and very family friendly show. This is a reason why Cowra is so supported. Allowing people to show their sheep in a competitive but friendly atmosphere with fierce competition,” said Roger Traves, Chief Steward. “We have 3 new studs joining the Championships this year which is great and a number returning after missing the Championships in 2018 due to the drought. With over 262 entries from 31 studs the standard that you will see this year will be overwhelming and a testament to the Stud operators and mothers in these dry conditions,” continued Roger. 14 - 15 June 2019 from 9am cowra showground Continued from page 4 “Even though we have had very dry conditions throughout NSW this season, we appreciate the effort that the breeders have put into their sheep in preparation for the NSW Dorset Championships and other shows this season,” said Mr Traves. This year’s selected judge is Mr Darryl Dixon from Ashbank Poll Dorset Stud in Dubbo. “It is great to see over 20 entries in the Ram Lamb class for 2019, this shows the dedication of the breeders in very tough conditions,” said Roger. At this year’s Poll Dorset Championships the School Competition will continue after the success of 2018. This year two schools have entered including Riverina Anglican College and Tamworth High School. “There could be the opportunity to build this section in the future and become a mixed breed competition sometime in the future,” said Chris Marr, School Competition Coordinator. Local studs heading to this year’s NSW Poll Dorset Championships include Cranbrook Poll Dorset Stud, Kinellar, Goonigal Poll Dorsets, Milacy Poll Dorset Stud, Ridgehaven and Pine Creek.

Last week Phil Donato MP met with young emerging leaders of the community who travelled to NSW Parliament from seven different schools in the Orange electorate, as part of the Student Leadership Program. Canowindra High School captains Ella Gruessing and Jamie Austin, along with Ms Gregson and Mrs Austin, visited Government House in Sydney and met Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AO QC Governor of NSW. During the visit students had the opportunity to ask questions of attending MPs about leadership, making decisions and representation. “It was wonderful to have Year 12 student leaders from across the Orange electorate spend the day at Parliament and see what happens during a sitting week,” Mr Donato said. “The Student Leadership Program is a great initiative which aims to inspire and foster the development of student leaders toward post-school leadership in our community,” continued Mr Donato.

CANOWINDRA SPORT CANOWINDRA PYTHONS RUGBY UNION The Under 7’s were ready for another splendid day of rugby last Sunday. Passing and nominating the second runner, was coming together under the instruction of Head Coach Nash. Highlights included a runaway try from Jack Nash and a dart to the line from Jack Trengove to score. Tommy Jobson showed he can think a few phases ahead by running from the car booster seat to score directly, an impressive skill. Parkes certainly turned on a better day this year for the U9’s to take the field. With the home side up first the team started with a flurry of tries lead by Campbell Arnott and Fraser Wythes. Some stiff competition was met in the second and third games with Dubbo Roos and Orange Emus. Clancy Hazelton and Will Swords both showed some great defence with a never say die attitude.
