Get Ready To Dance Canowindra

On Canowindra’s main street, store windows have been decorated to resemble the dress style of iconic ‘dances’. This is in preparation for the biggest dance event in the Central West, Canowindra’s “12 Hours of Dancing”. The event will take place on the 30th of June at the Canowindra Services Club. The day will consist of 12 hours of a combination of live and recorded music. Phil Redenbach will be performing while guests dance to a selection of dance styles, including the Old Time, the Modern Waltz, New Vogue and Straight Eights. Gail Davis, the event organiser is hoping

to continue the dance as an annual event. Gail commented, “It would just be fantastic to have a dance event that not only showcases Central West dance but also invites tourists into our community.” “The event will hopefully encourage people of all ages and experience to come along for a dance or even for a social cup of tea,” continued Gail. Tommy Jeffs, from Montrose House has partnered with Gail to bring the atmosphere of the dance to Canowindra’s streets, with six local stores all showcasing beautifully styled “dancers” in their window displays. Dear Editor, Re - More funding for those affected by drought. The state’s record-breaking drought continues to bite with farmers and rural communities bearing the brunt of the crisis. While some across the region have experienced rain during the past few months, 97 per cent of the state remains in drought, and the seasonal outlook remains bleak with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting drier than average conditions. The NSW Nationals in Government recently announced an Emergency Drought Relief package, bringing the total funding to more than $1.8 billion across the state, to further support farmers and regional communities. The extension of the Emergency Drought Relief package means more assistance for primary producers, more infrastructure to provide safe and secure water supplies, and more investment aimed at stimulating the local economy. Importantly it means the social and economic viability of rural and regional communities remains intact. Rain is the only real solution to drought but in the meantime, this is very good news for those doing it tough. I think it’s great to see the NSW Government is making this a priority – we are all in this together. Kate Hazelton, Cudal

“Canowindra is famous for its window displays, and our community has all worked together to dress the windows and be a part of the event,” Tommy exclaimed. The window displays were created in the hopes that it will encourage people from around the Central West to attend the event. “Canowindra is surrounded by many towns including Eugowra, Parkes, Forbes, Cowra, Cudal and Cargo all of which are roughly 30-40minutes away,” Tommy continued. “This event should hopefully attract visitors from around the region.” Tea, coffee and also finger food will be provided throughout the day and there will also be a series of prizes to be won. If you would like to experience sequence dancing, the waltz or learn the New Vogue and the best routines then you’ll love this event. Dancers of all ages and experience are welcome to attend. With ‘dance’ at the heart of the event you’ll find a fun filled, friendly and very social time on Sunday the 30th of June. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased at the door or through Gail Davis on 0417 747 338 or through Graham Aylen on 0408 897 676. By Kate Kiernan

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee pictured with Sandra Taylor, Divisional Returning Officer for Calare.

Andrew Gee Formally Returned As Federal Member For Calare

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee was last week formally returned as the Federal Member for Calare following the Declaration of the Poll by the Australian Electoral Commission. Mr Gee said he was feeling energised about the next three years and looking forward to continuing to deliver for the communities of the Central West, including Canowindra. “I’d like to thank the voters of Calare for putting their trust in me for another three years. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to represent Calare in the Australian Parliament,” Mr Gee said. “It’s a big responsibility and one I take very seriously. It was an outstanding result locally, with a healthy swing towards The Nationals and a clean sweep of every booth in Calare but three,” continued Mr Gee. “With the campaign over, it’s now back to work! I’m very optimistic about what can be achieved over this term of government,” Mr Gee said. Mr Gee said there were a number of issues he’d be working on over the next three years including: continuing drought relief, a community legal centre for the Calare electorate, even more local road funding, more capital funding for our aged care facilities, funding for local water security projects, continuing to clear up mobile phone black spots; and a range of other local infrastructure projects right around the electorate.

“Team Canowindra” Make History

FLYING HIGH…Team Canowindra members Matt Rice and Anton Kerr finished in 4th place at the Australian Hot Air Balloon Championships recently.

Local boys Anton Kerr and Matt Rice competed in the Australian Hot Air Balloon Championships held in Mudgee two weeks ago. The boys goal was to crack the top 10, a feat that they thought would be difficult considering most of the top ten fly balloons for a living and half are ranked on the world stage. They not only surprised themselves but also the other competitors when they finished in fourth spot. The competition is a game of precision, flying as close to the targets as possible and dropping a marker. “It is a week of flying and the points are progressive. The team with the most points at the end of the week wins,” explains Anton. Anton is the pilot of the balloon and flew beautifully all week only really missing one target during the whole competition. Matt is the chief crewmen, who gets the balloon off the ground at speed, tells Anton when it is safe to climb or descend, races to the next target and relays the wind direction information. Both have been working on their strategy since competing in the last Australian titles in Perth two years ago, where they finished 14th. All of the top ten compete with a special

racing balloon which is slightly smaller and thinner than the average balloon. This allows for more manoeuvrability. What makes this a special result said Matt is that “Anton did it in a slower, fat commercial balloon, and with software we got off the free app store, the other competitors have racers and software worth thousands of dollars”. The “Flying Lemmings” a large team of young competitors from the Yarra Valley have dubbed the boys “Team Canowindra” and the boys have now made the Australian Team to represent the country in next year’s World Championships in Slovenia, September 2020. The next step for the Team is to build/ buy a racing balloon to compete for Australia and to start hitting the sky’s and get training. The team are looking for a major sponsor or to sell advertising panels to go around the bottom of their new balloon, to help fund the operation. The Racer will be flying and seen in places such as Perth, Canberra, Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley, Slovenia and all over the Central West. Any persons or businesses interested in getting their name or business logo on the balloon can contact Matt on 0458 787 822.

PROPOSAL TO RE-ESTABLISH ALCOHOL FREE ZONES AND ALCOHOL PROHIBITED ZONES Cabonne Council is seeking comments or submissions from members of the public on its proposal to re-establish alcohol free zones and alcohol prohibited zones and amendment to the ‘Alcohol Control in Public Places Policy’.

Council in 1999 established a series of alcohol free zones and alcohol prohibited zones at Canowindra and Molong. These areas included: Alcohol Free Zone Molong – Bank Street from Edward Street to the Mitchell Highway Canowindra – Gaskill Street from Ferguson Street to Tilga Street Canowindra – the area from Gaskill Street to, and including, the Swinging Bridge Alcohol Prohibited area Molong – Village Green Canowindra – Morris Park and Memorial Park.

Alcohol free zones as prescribed by the Local Government Act 1993 apply to roads, and public car parks. The zone applies 24 hours, seven per week.

Alcohol prohibited areas may be applied to parks, sporting ovals and public reserves and may be time limited.

AMENDMENT TO THE ALCOHOL CONTROL IN PUBLIC PLACES POLICY To permit licensing of outdoor dining areas within an Alcohol Free Zone the council’s ‘Alcohol Control in Public Places Policy’ would require an amendment by inclusion in part 11 of that policy when addressing Alcohol Free Zones of a statement that reads as follows: ‘Implementation of these zones would not prevent the consumption of alcohol in any footpath dining areas that have a liquor license covering the footpath dining areas.’ The proposal and amended policy is currently on public exhibition until Friday, 19 July 2019 and can be viewed at Cabonne Council’s offices at Molong, Cudal and Canowindra or on Council’s website at www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au. Comments and submissions may be lodged in writing to the General Manager, PO Box 17, Molong NSW 2866 or by emailing Council at council@cabonne.nsw.gov.au by 5pm on Friday, 19 July 2019.

It is suggested that the Cabonne Council zones be re-established for a four year period. HJ Nicholls, Acting General Manager

CANOWINDRA SPORT CANOWINDRA TIGERS RUGBY LEAGUE The Tigresses consolidated 5th place on Sunday with a hard fought win 12-10 against Trundle. Kath Davis had a great game and received the 3 points and players player award. 2 points went to Keira Whatman and 1 point to Katie Baker. The first grade Tigers looked promising early and went to a 2-0 lead 5 minutes into the game but unfortunately they failed to complete their sets of six and continued to give Trundle field position and back to back sets. Trundle haven’t been defeated this year and the Tigers just gave them too much possession in the first half. At half time Trundle led 22-2 and after scoring the first try in the second half went to a lead of 26-2. The Tigers started to have more ball in the middle stages and played to their potential which resulted in 4 tries to have the home side under pressure. An unlucky call from the officials stopped the Tigers from scoring another try which would of levelled the scores. Trundle scored late and a field goal to run out winners 37-24. Great from the Tigers who had only 2 reserves for the day due to work commitments. Montrose House Players Player went to Nathan Whatman with his best game of the year which he also received the 3 points. Two points to Steve Tahere and 1 point to Frazer Ryder and Amone Moeakiola. This week the Tigers are at home to Peak Hill on Saturday. The club would like to wish Callum Clyburn all the best and we are with you all the way mate. By Barry Traves

MONTROSE House Hello Readers, welcome to this month’s column and welcome to winter. Lots of visitors during May and June for Balloon weekends and lots of parties and luncheons. Saturday 15th June I had Sarah Childs and friends from Narromine for a Black Tie ‘Retro’ dinner for 20 people to celebrate a combined birthday dinner. Jean Mary Fagan hosted a lunch with family and friends for daughter Sue and son Charley on 2nd June. I travelled to Parkes Picnic Races on Saturday 8th June with friends from Canberra, Mudgee and Young. I won best dressed at this fabulous day and had a great time. I hosted dinner for 12 friends when we got back that night and I even featured on TV, not bad for an old boy. Sunday 9th June Sarah Jehan and Fiancee David’s engagement party was held with 8 of their friends. A great night and good fun with this crew. I went to the Dubbo Picnic Races on Friday 14th June and won best dressed gentleman at this prestigious event. I spoke about Canowindra town when they interviewed me which is a plus for our town. Saturday 15th June was a pre wedding dinner for the Charleton family from Forbes with a group of 20 family and friends before the nuptials next weekend. Devonshire Tea has proved really popular especially from 10am after Sunday mass. It’s great value and another attraction for our town. My breakfasts from 8am on Saturday and Sunday are also doing well. I have a couple of big weeks ahead, off to Port Macquarie on the 25th June to host ‘Bravehearts Race Day’ with Ray Hadley and hoping to raise $60,000 for this worthy cause. Catholic ladies breakfast on Saturday 29th which will be a full house. Don’t forget we have the 12 Hours of Dancing on 30th June which will be fabulous. I have dressed lots of windows in town to promote this. Please support Gail and the crew, it's $10 to join with supper available and lots of prizes, should be wonderful. In July I will be doing Yuletide lunches and dinners for $40 per person, 3 courses of scrumptious food so lots to keep me busy. Take care and be kind to each other, Tommy xx

A minute’s silence was observed on Saturday before the Canowindra Pythons took on the Coolah Roos for Trevor Capps who recently passed away.

CANOWINDRA PYTHONS RUGBY UNION The Pythons held Sponsor’s Day last Saturday with an amazing turn out! Thank you to this year’s sponsors and members. The ladies Canowindra-Cowra side won to Dubbo from a forfeit and this weekend they have a bye. The men’s side had a tough game against the Coolah Roos and unfortunately lost 3310. Tries were scored by Sam O and there was no catching Lachie Wells with his huge intercept and run down the sideline. Players Player went to Lachie Wells, 3 points to James Watson, 2 points to Browny and 1 point to Franky. This Saturday the men travel to Geurie to take on the Goats. By Adelaide Lawrence

I made an error in last week’s news, it should have read two Canowindra teams will be competing in the District Senior Fours at Parkes Railway Diggers, not the District Fours. Match drawn to be played on Tuesday, 25th June. Final of the CLUB FOURS CHAMPIONSHIP - Jill Messenger, Betty Jenkins, Jenny Middleton and Dianne Mooney v Marion Wilson, Leanne Stevenson, Moyna Rue and Libby Balcombe.
