The Age Of Fishes Museum Flying The Flag For Canowindra
The Age of Fishes Museum in Canowindra has been announced as a finalist in the 2019 Destination Country and Outback and Destination Riverina Murray Regional Tourism Awards. The Age of Fishes Museum has been nominated in the Tourist Attraction category for 2019. “This year’s finalists showcase the best of the region’s tourism industry and some amazing individuals and operators. Each of these finalists is now in the running to be named a winner in 19 award categories at our gala awards ceremony on July 27 in Dubbo”, said Regional Tourism Awards Chair, Jane Barnes. “We are definitely up against some of the big guns from out west this year,” said Anne Clark, The Age of Fishes Museum Manager. “It is just wonderful to be nominated
again, you have to be in it to win it”, continued Anne. Lucy White, General Manager of Destination Country and Outback, says the Regional Tourism Awards are an invaluable opportunity for the industry to come together and celebrate business excellence across the sector. “We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our finalists, as they take their first steps on the way to possible State and National recognition. All our tourism finalists have contributed to the Country and Outback’s growing reputation as a premier destination in NSW, and I would like to congratulate everyone who took the time to enter.” Winners of the Regional Tourism Awards gain finalist status upon entering the NSW State Tourism Awards, and if successful, go onto the National Tourism Awards.

Hello to all at Canowindra from Allan and Debbie Symons hoping all is well for you. We are going along quite well with health and travel. Since leaving WA we came over to Katherine in the NT. Visited the local museum which displays a lot on local history but also the role Katherine played during WW2 with Army and Air Force bases spread around the district. We headed up North to the Darwin region staying at Howard Springs near Palmerston. Tried some more fishing in the river, I did say tried, some shopping then a visit to Chiropractic Life for a tune up. This is the same Chiro that is at Canowindra they have several practices around the country. We then headed 130kms west out to the Lodge of Dundee at Dundee Beach for a week, we stayed here for a month in 2015. This is predominately a fishing resort, with boat charters and helicopter flights. We stayed grounded and surf fished catching a couple of Blue Nosed Salmon and a Spotted Rock Cod all quite yummy done on the BBQ and also collected some souvenirs for the family. We headed back down to Katherine
where my two new pairs of glasses had arrived from Broome in WA. I will have my first ever pair of glasses for driving on today as we head south for the next 2 days before heading east across the border into Queensland and Mt Isa. That’s it for now so next update in a couple of weeks from Cape York. Regards, Al and Deb Symons

THUMBS UP To Gail Davis for organising such a successful 12 hours of Dancing event!
THUMBS DOWN To the carpark behind Vinnies, so many pot holes someone will fall and break their leg!
THUMBS DOWN To the rude person letting off fireworks in town last Friday night. Have a little respect, some of us have to go to work the next day and not to mention the children that were woken from their sleep by this rude individual.
THUMBS UP To the person who found my cat after she was missing for nearly four weeks, took her to the vets and she was returned to me.
THUMBS DOWN To the highway patrol car speeding so fast along Rodd St recently!

Cano Mocs And Docs 2804 On Again!
Cano Mocs and Docs 2804 (CMD) is a short film festival for Documentaries and Mockumentaries involving STEM based themes i.e. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) supported by the Country Education Foundation and the Cabonne Council. The idea behind Cano Mocs and Docs 2804 is to showcase and encourage people of all ages to wonder at the marvels of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subject matters. This year’s signature item is "Wave” and must be included creatively in your film. The festival's aim is to help rural and regional youth gain access to education, training and jobs, through grants, scholarships, support services and resources. A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a historical record. Mockumentaries generally consist of a comical fictitious story-line told through a documentary style of film-making. Categories and Prize Money for 2019: • Best Documentary (Over 18 years of Age) – 8mins - $1,000 • Best Mockumentary (Over 18 Years of Age) - 8mins - $1,000 • Best Documentary Junior (12 - 17 years and under) - 4mins - $500 • Best Mockumentary Junior (12 - 17 years and under) - 4mins - $500 • Best Documentary (0-11 years of Age) 2 mins - $250 • Best Mockumentary (0-11 years of Age) - 2 mins - $250 Entries close on the 15th September 2019. Taylor Litton-Strain is looking for the perfect location for her film "Aloft" in the Canowindra region.
On The Hunt For The Perfect Location Award winning film producer Taylor LittonStrain visited Canowindra last weekend to look for the perfect locations for her next film “Aloft”. She spent the weekend driving up and down a 100km radius of Canowindra to begin the search, meeting lots of locals along the way. “Canowindra is such a beautiful place, and everyone I met with was just so lovely and welcoming. I feel sure that the perfect location is here somewhere for our film, it’s just a matter of finding it,” Taylor LittonStrain said. Her film “Aloft” is a 360 virtual reality film. This new mode of filmmaking means that when you watch the film it feels like you’re actually standing in the middle of it and the film plays all around you in 360 degrees. It will be directed by renown VR director Lester Francois.
On her hunt Litton-Strain found many great locations for the film, but hasn't yet found one of the most important ones – an old family home. The film is set during Australia’s post war period and so the team is looking for an old property where a small family may have lived in the 1950’s / 1960’s. They are ideally looking for a property that was built in this time or earlier (the older the better!). The house could be in any condition but ideally has had very little to no renovations or improvements. The filmmaking team would love locals to get in touch if they think they might have, or know of a property that would suit the film. The chosen location will be provided with insurance and a fee payment to use it for the film. You can contact Taylor by calling 0424 890 034 or email her at filmaloft@ gmail.com
Not-for-profit community organisations are invited to apply for a 2019 Australia Post Community Grant, with funding of up to $10,000 available to each recipient. The initiative aims to support projects and services that address locally identified needs that strengthen social connections and reduce barriers to participating in community life. Speaking on the launch of the program, Australia Post Executive General Manager Community and Consumer, Nicole Sheffield said it was another way for Australia Post to help communities thrive and prosper. “With so much change to the way we live, work and shop, it’s more important than ever that we have strong, vibrant local communities where people can connect to shape our shared future,” said Ms Sheffield. The 2019 Australia Post Community Grants will support initiatives that: • Help people connect with each other through group activities (e.g. volunteering programs, civic engagement and environmental activities); • Reduce barriers to participation in community life (e.g. transport, ability to pay, or access to community spaces); • Develop skills and leadership capability to strengthen community networks. The launch of the 2019 Community Grants program follows the completion of this year’s Australia Post Workforce Grants which saw over 400 recipients receive $500 each towards community projects across Australia as nominated by Australia Post’s local staff members. Eligible community organisations can apply for an Australia Post Community Grant for up to $10,000 via www.auspost.com.au/ grants. Applications close on Sunday 4 August and all applicants will be notified of the outcome in October 2019.

On Thursday 4th July 2019 during week 10, Canowindra Public School students in Years 5 and 6 played Cowra Public School in a Touch Football Knockout Competition. Played on our school oval in Canowindra, we got off to a great start with Ludie Rogers scoring first leading the game 1-0. We had students from Year 5/6 and Year 6 cheering us on all game and we were coached well by Miss White who encouraged us the whole game. We were strong in attack making metres and scoring tries off our quick passes. At half time we were leading 3-2. The second half of the game we defended well working together as a team stopping Cowra from scoring and making lots of touches. We managed to score another 2 tries with all our determination to win the game with the final score being 5-2 Canowindra's way. Canowindra Public School will now play West Wyalong on Thursday 1st August during week 2 of Term 3, hopefully in Canowindra. Great Job Canowindra girls and Miss White! By Hayley Stephens
