Moorbel Hall Says Thanks To Canowindra Community

The Moorbel Hall Committee would like to thank the Canowindra community for their ongoing support of the hall over the past years and are excited to announce some new additions to the hall. Maureen Bermingham, President of the Moorbel Hall Committee was very excited to show the Phoenix the new items in and around the hall on a recent visit last week. The kitchen now features a new double door fridge, two new rangehoods and a new kitchen fan. “Thanks must go to the Canowindra community who support the hall at our monthly markets, we wouldn’t be able to organise all these new things without them,” said Maureen. Bob and Pat Grimshaw must also be

thanked for the generous donation of 10 Flowering Gums which are being planted in and around the car park to provide much needed shade in the summer months. The next project is for the ladies and men’s toilets to be re-painted. Long term plans for the hall include a brand new floor in the main section and for the outside of the hall to be fully re-painted. The Moorbel Hall is a great community asset that is used for the Moorbel Hall Markets once a month, weddings, birthday parties and anniversaries and fitness classes. If you would like to book the hall please contact Warwick Bowd on 6344 2025. The next committee monthly meeting will be held on 25th July at 6.30pm at the Hall.

Selina Win Pe one of the survivors of the infamous Lindt Café Siege in Sydney in 2014 visited Canowindra last week and stayed with Tommy Jeffs at Montrose House. Since the siege Selina has battled Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for 4.5 years. Selina wanted to find a way of giving back to Australians who have helped and supported her since the siege. It was in early March of this year that Selina decided to jump in the car and leave Sydney, and see the effects of the NSW drought first hand that she had heard about through the media. After her travels she contacted the CEO of Rural Aid Australia Charles Alder and wanted to know how she could help. Selina then identified with the help of Charles, two programs that she would get behind. • The Buy a Bale Program • The Gift of Music Program While she was in Canowindra she met with Cowra Council and also delivered hay bales to farmers in need at Cumnock. On 1st June Selina launched a new website www.selinawinpe.com.au which shows all her travels around the state.

Kids Helpline - 71,533 contacts go unanswered: Kids Helpline, Australia’s only free confidential 24/7 national children’s counselling and support service, has today released statistics showing 51% of requests for help to the service went unanswered over the first 6 months of 2019, due to funding shortfall. Responding to concerns children and young people have in relation to their mental health, general well-being and other developmental issues is a major area of Kids Helpline’s work. Kids Helpline relies heavily upon your town’s charitable art union and donations from the community to continue its operation. In order to meet the extra demand, an additional $5 million annually would be required to enable employment of additional professional counselling staff.

MONTROSE House Hello Readers, welcome to the column. “Happy Yuletide” Isn’t it wonderful to see our town dressed up for this festive time. I always consider “Yuletide” the adults Christmas and Christmas in December the children’s. Congratulations to everyone who has got into the spirit of this wonderful theme. We have lunches at Montrose House on Sunday 21st July and Sunday 28th July, 3 courses of festive food for $40 p/head and must say the house looks wonderful with Christmas decorations and warm open fires. Get family or friends together, ring me on 6344 1006 to book. I have had lots of visitors and luncheons for July. As you already know I flew to Port Macquarie at the end of June to host a race day for Bravehearts with Ray Hadley and my fellow judge was the beautiful Helen Ritchie (former judge of Dancing with the Stars) who is such a lovely lady. We raised about $21,000 which I was very proud of, the Canowindra weekend that I donated raised $1,500. This week we start our Yuletide lunches with Canowindra Garden Club on the 17th July. On Friday 19th July I have a group from Sydney and on Saturday 20th July Jacqui Shannon hosts her Mums 80th with a special luncheon. Next Wednesday 24th I have a bus load from Sydney and then Thursday 25th, Barbara Kerr and the nine dancing ladies with a bus load from Cowra. Friday 26th is Bathurst Probus with a bus load for Yuletide luncheon which means lots of visitors shopping in our special shops. Saturday 27th Max Harris hosts a dinner for his delightful wife Joy’s 60th Birthday for family and friends which will be really special. So lots of parties and guests in the B & B so will keep me out of trouble. I will be heading to Queensland in August to judge fashions for the three race meetings up there so that should be lots of fun. We then start to prepare for our “Mini Canowindra Flower Floriade”, will keep you posted. Take care rug up, its cold out there. Love Tommy x

Plastic Free July Most people now take their own reusable bags shopping and many people use a reusable cup when getting take away coffee to sit and enjoy a real cup. Well done you! There is much more you can do to help the impact of single use plastic on the environment, including the health of the ocean, reducing the impact on landfill and global warming.

Roy White from the Central West Tractor Trek Group with some of the drivers from the 2018 Tractorthon.

24hr Tractorthon Back Again

After the success of the 2018 Central West Tractor Trek Tractorthon another will be held at the Canowindra Showground on the 3rd-4th August 2019 kicking off at 2pm. Last year a massive $12,500 for chosen charity Little Wings was raised during the 24hour event. Little Wings is a not-forprofit organisation, whose aim is to support families to reduce the financial burden, emotional strain and travel fatigue experienced when a child is unwell. Over the two days at the Showground the Canowindra and surrounding communities are invited to come along and support the vintage tractors that will be participating in the Tractorthon. There will also be vintage cars and rare tractors on display throughout the weekend. It also coincides with the

Annual Swap Meet. If you would like to get involved and sponsor a lap on the day or be an hourly sponsor please get in touch with Nick Clancy on 0404 057 746 or Roy White on 6344 1660. Raffle tickets are on sale at Canowindra Tyre Service and the Canowindra Phoenix office with some great prizes on offer including a brand new Hyundai i30 to be won. Tickets are only $5 each. The Central West Tractor Trek this year will be based in Dubbo and visit the towns of Wongrabon, Beni and Geurie along the way, the tractors will also visit the Taronga Western Plains Zoo. This year the trek will run for three days over the 27th-29th September. By Sarah Maynard

Try to avoid: • Filling your bins with plastics for ‘recycling’ by not buying products with much plastic packaging. • Pre-packed fruit and vegetables by choosing loose products or use a reusable bag. • Pre-packed meat or fish by shopping at the deli counter or butcher or fishmonger for paper wrapped or BYO reusable container. • Bottled water by filling a reusable bottle from the tap. • Bottled soft drinks by reducing the amount (helps your health) or make your own with a soda maker/carbonator or choose glass bottles (and recycle). The CWA in Canowindra holds boomerang bag making workshops each month and will have bags for sale at the Moorbel Markets in September. They use donated fabric and volunteers cut and sew the bags together or you can pick up a kit to make your own. If you wish to recycle your soft plastics that you collect from shopping and packaging, you can take them to the collection bins outside Lawrence’s IGA or Foodworks stores in Canowindra. The CWA members collect this material and transport it to Redcycle to be made into outdoor furniture and playground equipment. Take the challenge. Avoid landfill waste, reduce your eco-footprint and protect the ocean. For more information contact CWA member Bev Taylor 0488 778 173.

CANOWINDRA SPORT RUGBY LEAGUE

LEAGUE TAG Cargo defeated the Tigresses to the tune of 48-8. The girls played well the first half but Cargo had more of the ball and Canowindra had to defend most of the second half. Players player was Jess Perry and 3 points, 2 Kathy Davis, 1 Alisha Earsman. FIRST GRADE The Tigers failed to control the ball in the first half allowing Cargo to gain the upper hand. First points went to Cargo with 2 tries to lead 8-0. The Tigers had their chances but continued to give the ball back to the opposition. The Tigers hit back with tries to Salisie and Brydon to level the scores at 8 all with 13 minutes to the break. Canowindra gained more composure in their play and the upper hand over Cargo’s big pack. Entertaining play from the Tigers saw them in Cargo’s twenty with a clever pass to Steve Tahere scoring near the post which was converted for the Tigers to have a 14-8 lead at half time. The second half was a more polished performance with Canowindra’s pack wearing down Cargo’s defence for the Tigers backs to take advantage. A try to Tim Roberts pushed the score to 18-8 and shortly after a try to Aaron Earsman from a short ball extended the lead to 24-8. Cargo fought back with a converted try after poor discipline from the Tigers to narrow the gap to 10 points. The Tigers finished the stronger of the two sides with a try to Taufao under the post for the Tigers to hold a commanding lead 30-14. This was an entertaining game of rugby league and was more intense than the scores indicated with bruising defence. The officials of the game should be congratulated on their performance for a job well done.

Montrose House Players Player went to Fraser Ryder, Best and fairest and 3 points to Aaron Earsman, 2 to Harry Whatman,1 each to Brydon Hughes, Blaisé Marsh, Frazer Ryder. There were a number of players pushing for points and that is pleasing to see coming to the pointy end of the year. Next week the Tigers travel to Molong who are 2nd on the ladder and a tough encounter is assured. The Club would like to congratulate Brydon and Tahlia on their engagement during the week. By Barry Traves

MEN'S BOWLS Last Saturday two consistency singles matches were played. Dool Beath played Crock Watt where the scores were close throughout the game. It was anyone's game to win but Dool finished up winning 154-146. In the other match Vinnie Mirto played Cyril Webb. Vinnie took control early in the game to have a comfortable win 152-108. Saturday July 20 - Major fours final- S Kirkman, B McClintock, C and B Webb V P Kennedy, P Taylor, D Beath and R Traves. Sunday July 21 - O'Brien Cup- D Beath and K Walker V B Webb and T Tuimauga.
