Vote Now In My Community Project

There are three major projects in Canowindra that have been put forward and are now open for voting in the NSW Government’s My Community Project Scheme. The entire community is encouraged to vote for these projects by heading to www.mycommunityproject.service.nsw.gov.au/projects Lighting up Tom Clyburn Oval is one of the projects. It proposes the installation of light towers at the Oval to supply first class lighting to the complex. It will enable evening games of sport and the opportunity to host Regional sporting events at night. It will also give the community the chance to host non sporting events like marquee community events including popular food and wine events, night markets and fundraisers. An upgrade to the rusted old cricket nets at Canowindra Public School is an-

other project. The nets will be used by all students in the community, either during school or for afternoon cricket practice sessions. The new nets will help promote an active lifestyle for everyone to enjoy. Canowindra Public School cricket nets are located on the grounds of the local public school. The other local primary school St Edward’s is located directly across the road and students from both schools will benefit from this upgrade. Students' skills will improve and more children will want to participate in cricket and be active. The final project is a new community display shed at the Canowindra Showground. This project will go towards a bright new display shed for local events such as the Canowindra Show. It will make the Showgrounds safer and continue with the overall Showground improvements.

Good wishes to all from Al and Deb as we continue our travels. Since the last update we stayed in Mt Isa for a couple of days, sightseeing and shopping. Great view from the lookout over the main mine area which is right in the town. Travelled 500kms north up to Normanton in the Carpentaria Gulf with a couple of days sightseeing and fishing. Deb caught and released a 40cm sea catfish al zero. We then started heading up to Cape York as we headed east 800kms to Palmer River for one night then north 400kms up to Archer River and a further 400kms up to Seisia Holiday Park crossing the Jardine River on the ferry to get there. The park is right on the seaside in Endeavour Strait great sites and views with palm trees and all. The next day we drove 40kms up to the top of Cape York on a very thin challenging track at times through what seems like a tropical jungle definitely only 4WD country.

Pajinka is the actual area name with stunning seaside views and the hilly cape tip further on. It was way too rough for us to climb and walk the last 800m to the actual tip but we were very happy to have got as far as we did. Couple of days fishing and relaxing now then on Monday 22nd July we headed the 1,350kms down to Townsville for 9 days, we arrived there on Wednesday the 24th July. So goodbye for now… From Al and Deb till next update.

Fresh Seafood

THUMBS UP To Tommy Jeffs for his free oranges out the front of Montrose House, they are delicious.

THUMBS DOWN To the people who have cut down multiple trees on the Nangar Rd along the fence near Mickety Mulga. Have more thought for conservation of our flora and fauna for the future. This is a Category 2 stock route, which means it is highly valued for biodiversity conservation. It is owned by the Australian community and not yours to cut down. Ash Wright.

Meningococcal Cases Could Rise With Shifting Seasons: The Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is urging people to be alert to lesser known signs of meningococcal disease with zero cases already reported in the area this year and the peak period for the disease still more than a month away. Meningococcal disease can occur at any time of year but cases normally start to increase towards the end of flu season when people’s immune systems are weaker from viruses. Last year WNSWLHD reported one case of meningococcal disease. It is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can cause death within hours so the more symptoms people know about, the better. Most cases occur in infants, young children, teenagers

Lueth Ajak Is Heading Back To Canowindra! Due to overwhelming demand the team are proud to be bringing back to the Sunday Sessions at The Bowlo on Sunday 4th August, Lueth Ajak! With his powerful vocals and the ease of which he settled the audience into his creative and talented set of guitar and vocal loops there was no doubting Lueth would be returning for another Sunday Session. Characterising his own performances as “a cheeky yet soulful style” this South Sudanese, Kenyan/Australian youngster describes his inspirations as being “African styled music and a mix in of westernised music. I was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, lived with lots of family and we enjoyed music as a part of our lives.” Growing up, Lueth listened to the likes of Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra

to Usher, Alicia Keys and Bruno Mars ... you can't go wrong with inspiration like that! Lueth started doing gigs in the NSW Central West back in 2012. Lueth has endless reviews praising his amazing vocals, performances and the ability to “work a crowd” plus comments such as "Amazing mix of old and new songs, he has an amazing voice!" Raffles are run each month to support the free live music so grab a ticket with the ‘Surf & Turf’ tray from Muzzy’s Quality Meats plus other meat trays, award winning wines from Windowrie Wines and the sensational beers from Pioneer Brewing Co. The Sunday Sessions offers you a Plan B so you can leave your car at home. Call Peter on 0459 913 894 with the courtesy bus running between 2pm – 7.30pm.

GREEN Thumb Hey! This Sunday (28th July) is National Tree Day! Many keen gardeners are well aware that having a nice garden surrounding where we live, or in the parks in our town, or shady tree lined streets, give us many benefits. Our health, our air quality, our happiness, our property values, our environment are all improved by planting shrubs and trees. National Tree Day is an initiative by Planet Ark and partner organisations to promote planting of trees and the benefits of doing so. See www.treeday.planetark. org for more detail. The plant nursery industry that I am involved with, is also involved in a couple of projects such as Plant Life Balance and 202020 Vision which are all about measuring and proving some of the benefits to our health, the environment and our economy, of having more trees and other plants around us and across our landscapes. A summary of some of the benefits of having more plants and trees around us are as follows: • a 5% increase in tree cover can reduce nearby daytime temperature by 2.3 degrees , which could be crucial as heatwaves cost more lives than all other climate change impacts • healthy trees in our gardens, towns and cities absorb carbon dioxide and air pollutants from the atmosphere while providing oxygen for us to breath • time spent in green, outdoor spaces can lower the risk of many diseases including heart disease and diabetes • 83% of Australians see green space as a place for relaxation and taking time out. 73% see their garden as a sanctuary for their mental wellbeing. Contact with nature is found to have health and psychological benefits, including reducing stress, improving attention and a positive effect on mental restoration. So….get out on National Tree Day this Sunday and plant a tree for your health and wellbeing! By Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery
