Tractors And Treasure!

This weekend the Canowindra Showground will be buzzing with the Central West Tractor Trek Group holding their 2nd annual 24 hour Tractorthon alongside the Annual Swap Meet. To the Editor of The Canowindra Phoenix, Canowindra ratepayers, please think carefully on the proposal of a service station on 19-23 Gaskill St. Cabonne Council covers an area of 6,017 square kms which includes 7 Towns. Only two streets in this large area are defined as Heritage Precincts; Bank St Molong and Gaskill St, Canowindra that is classified as Heritage/Urban Conservation. Canowindra residents who appreciate and love our town know it is a unique country town which attracts many visitors, not only for our festivals and events in promoting tourism, but also many people who visit, come to see our Heritage buildings, and enjoy the peace and quiet, and friendly atmosphere, away from large cities and towns. The development application to build a large modern service station with a convenience store at 19-23 Gaskill St, manned from 5am to 10pm and all night with card

facilities seven days a week, illuminated with bright lights and signs is not appropriate on this site. The added volume of traffic and heavier vehicles, are a hazard to pedestrians and school children, with noise, flood, and possible pollution of the Belubula River flats, should an accident or spill occur, is a matter of great concern. No matter what precautions are taken, accidents and spillage are possibilities and should be considered. The building itself will not fit in with present Heritage and Urban Conservation of the older style homes in Gaskill St. As residents we need to think of this proposal in our town and what effect it will have on us all besides the businesses in town which supply our needs. The impact will be enormous and as residents and ratepayers, please think of the changes that may come should this proposal succeed. Thank you for your attention Nola Meggitt

Community Assistance Grants: Community groups in Cabonne are being urged to apply for Council grants to improve the “liveability” of their areas. Applications are open for Cabonne Council's 2019-20 Community Assistance Program grants, which are designed to provide an ongoing or sustainable benefit to local communities. In order to be eligible for the Community Assistance Program, applicants must be a not-for-profit organisation in the Cabonne Local Government Area and be undertaking a project on non-commercial facilities within the Shire. Each project will be assessed on its merits and the relative benefit it will return to the community. Grants are provided on a 50:50 basis, but communities can provide their half of the funding through voluntary labour or in-kind contributions. Applications for CAP funding close at 5pm on Friday 30 August 2019. Application forms and further details can be obtained by contacting Cabonne Council’s Grants Officer Naomi Schroder on 6392 3200 or by visiting the Council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au Save the Date: The Canowindra Tigers will celebrate the Centenary of the Club on the weekend of 7th and 8th May 2020. Federal Member for Calare and Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Andrew Gee said the Future Drought Fund will deliver $100 million in investment into drought preparedness and resilience projects every year, starting July 2020. “The $5 billion Future Drought Fund means $100 million every year will be invested in drought resilience and preparedness. This is on top of the $1.9 billion we’ve already invested in Farm Household Allowance, Rural Financial Counselling, mental health funding, low interest loans and more,” said Mr Gee. Canowindra Business And Progress Association Update

Bill Paul has retired handing over the reins to Nick Daly.

Changing Of The Guard At Iconic Local Store

Bill Paul has handed over the reigns of his iconic flooring store to local residents Nick and Nadine Daly. Bill purchased the iconic Strand Theatre in 1976 after outgrowing his smaller store at 87 Gaskill St (where the Deli Lama is now located). “I have been here at this location for 52 years,” said Bill. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time and career here, servicing Canowindra and surrounds,” said Bill. “I want to thank my loyal customers and staff who have supported the business over the years,” continued Bill. The transition took place on 1st July 2019 and Nick and Nadine Daly have some big plans for the store! Be sure to call in and check out the transformation inside the iconic building. “We are excited to add Daly Flooring and Carpet to our current business Daly Construction Co,” said Nick Daly. “I am very excited and grateful to Bill for giving me this opportunity,” continued Nick. Bill has a few things planned for his retirement including fishing and working on his farm just outside of Canowindra. “I want to wish Nick and Nadine all the best with the store!” said Bill. Daly Flooring and Carpet is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9am - 3pm, Wednesday 9am - 5pm and Saturday 9am - 1pm. Consultation outside these hours are available by appointment.

Last Wednesday the monthly meeting of the Canowindra Business and Progress Association was well attended. There are a lot of matters which the Association is currently looking at, with representations being made to Council plus other relevant bodies, including signage around the village, streetscape issues and discussion around the DA for the Service Station in Gaskill Street. Of real importance is the need to create a Canowindra Strategic Plan for the village and surrounds for the next 10-20 years. This is a big task and the Association would welcome everyone to become involved. If you belong to an association, a sports group, school association or are a business owner or individual then your input is required. This document will essentially be a guide to where we want the village to be in 10-20 years’ time and along the way what is required to ensure it remains a significant historic village and a viable one. This document will also be able to highlight what grants may be able to be applied for to assist in this journey. New members are always welcome at the Association and the meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Canowindra Services Club. One for the diaries – Save the date for the 21st March 2020 for the Canowindra Street Party and Village Open Day. It will be a great day to showcase the village and to welcome new people to the village. Call Graham Beasley, the President of the association on 6344 1009 or Vice President Arthur Falconer on 0408 416 034 if you would like further information.

The Canowindra-Cowra women’s side had their final game last Saturday against Bathurst. Canowindra-Cowra scored the first try for the game by Shell with the kick unsuccessful. The women held Bathurst out for the first quarter but unfortunately the others not so much. Bathurst won the game 82-5. The ladies have had a great season together. We didn’t come last, but yet we came 13th out of 15 strong teams!
