Letters To The Editor It is wonderful news about the expansion of The Phoenix, and its move to provide the Forbes community with another avenue to obtain the latest information about their region.

Since I entered Federal politics in the early 2000s the media world has changed dramatically and gone are the days dominated by print media. Instead we have a seven-days-aweek news cycle.

I must admit that I am a hard-copy person and still enjoy spreading out the Saturday paper on the kitchen table, but I acknowledge the cost and limited media capabilities that come with this.

However, I am pleased that The Phoenix is bucking the trend, and will supply both a print and online edition of their paper.

This decision I’m sure will be an added benefit to the Forbes community.

I wish The Forbes Phoenix and its editor John Rozentals all the very best for the future, and I look forward to reading the tales from the Forbes region.

It’s School holidays again and there is always plenty to do with the children. “Warming the Cockles of your Heart” is an old saying that comes out in winter. After having a bowl of delicious pea and ham soup this week at Mezzanine I thought we should call on all the budding Masterchefs in Forbes and ask them to send in a particular soup recipe that they either love or cook a lot for their family. Landmark Harcourts pushes Oz agriculture in China Agribusiness specialists Landmark Harcourts will showcase Australia’s best agricultural investment opportunities in China this August, only months after the two countries signed their Free Trade Agreement.

The Connect with Australia – China Property Showcase 2015 will provide the platform to connect Australian producers of beef, dairy, cropping and horticulture with Chinese investors in a bid to add value across the supply chain.

Forbes gets an upgraded fire truck Fire protection and emergency response in Forbes have received a boost with the arrival of a $310,000 fire truck.

The Mercedes Benz fire truck, referred to as a Class-2 pumper, is now in operation after being delivered to Forbes Fire Station.

Orange State MP Andrew Gee said the new Class-2 fire truck had the latest equipment and technology, which will increase the capacity of Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters to deal with fires, accidents, chemical spills and other emergencies.

“The NSW State Government is committed to providing firefighters with the best equipment and technology available,” he said.

“The state-of-the-art Mercedes Benz truck has a larger cabin than previous trucks, providing greater comfort and safety for firefighters. The rear of the truck has also been remounted and modified to provide more room for equipment.”

“Our firefighters put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe. The least

we can do is give them the most up-to-date equipment. It’s great to see them getting it in Forbes.”

Acting Superintendent Steven Hayes said FRNSW continued to provide its firefighters with modern and safe vehicles for their vital work in protecting NSW families.

“The new truck will help firefighters better protect the Forbes community and will help improve the overall quality of our emergency response.”

Gladly accepting the keys to the new vehicle, Brian Clarke, Captain of the Forbes Fire Brigade, praised the way that the previous truck had served his team.

“But look, it’s 14 years old and it battles to reach 100kph on a downhill run,” he said.

“This one is turbo-charged and will have plenty of grunt, not to mention a smaller turning circle, which will be really useful for negotiating the town’s roundabouts.”

“And, of course, the extra comfort will be much appreciated by the boys.”

Tucked away on the corner of Farrand and Battye Streets is a real find, with a name to match, Baa-Moo-Oink, a locally owned butcher shop. Ron Kenny is the butcher in charge and has been in the game for, in his words, “too long”, moving to his current location around 7 years ago. The beef he sells is Angus and is hand-picked from a local farmer through the Forbes Livestock Centre, where they are then sent to Breakout Meats for processing. His lambs are from the Dorper breed, which are bred to produce a high quality carcass, and have the reputation of rapid weight gain. He offers not only top quality beef, lamb, and pork, but has a range of gluten free beef sausages and home cooked products. He wants to provide product from the paddock to the plate and believes that his investment in the future will be growing his own beef herd.

Kids and horses: gently does it Sahara Park Riding School is run on the outskirts of Forbes by Helen Morris and Leanne Smith, who are both totally devoted to teaching children about learning to ride and, most importantly, about loving the horses that can give them so much joy if treated properly.

Their success is shown by the group of regular students who come along each week and pay $30 per hour for access to their equine wisdom. And they’re not, as Helen points, kids necessarily from a ‘horsey’ family, just kids interested in learning how to ride, and to look after the animals they care for.

To that end, Helen and Leanne have invested more than $750,000 in forming a stable of about 30 horses that they can trust, even with quite inexperienced children.

One of the most important tasks they have to perform is teaching the riders how to get up after their first fall and get back on the horse again.

“It happens to everyone at least once,” said Helen. “And though our set-up and choice of

horses ensure there’s no physical damage, there’s inevitably a bit of lost pride.”

Sahara Park also runs live-in classes during school holidays — ones that they find the students very reticent to head home from.

These cost $450 for five days, including all meals, use of horses and equipment, and lectures from specialists such as vets and farriers.

Carrying on a Betta family tradition The Forbes Betta Home Living was purchased

by Mandy and Ian Westcott in July 2002, continuing on with a family tradition, with the business having previously been owned by Ian’s parents.

Does your customer service leave a smile or a grimace?

Did you know that 68 per cent of customers who leave your business do so because of the indifferent attitude of a company employee while just 9 per cent are won over by the competition. What are you, as a business owner, doing about that?

I recently visited a friend in a rather large country city and she gave me the names of three businesses to visit, as they were my type of store. I was astounded by the complete lack of service or greeting in the first two I visited.

In the first shop, there was a young girl yawning behind the counter. She didn’t greet me or even attempt to leave her seat. In the second one, a lady was buzzing around, but once again no real greeting. In the third business, I was greeted, asked if there was anything I was looking for and if I needed any help.

Later that day I was telling the story of my visits that morning and, of course, I told more people about the bad experiences than the good ones. The saying was that you tell 10 people about a bad experience and only a couple about a good experience. Now, however, this has changed with social media. The whole

world now hears about the bad experiences and only sometimes the good experiences.

Successful businesses, small or large, make customers – the real reason a business exists – a part of their team. It is not enough to be delivering on your service promises, you must also be seen to be delivering on your service promises.

Ensure you show your customers that they are valued by keeping them informed, and ask for their feedback to help you continuously improve the level of assistance you provide. Let customers know when you make changes. Make customers feel that you are on their side. Take responsibility for meeting customers’ expectations.

Phyllis Miller, Mayor of Forbes Shire Council How long have you lived in or around Forbes? Just over 40 years.

What do you love most about your work?

I love giving back something to a community that has given just so much to me. How much they cared about me when I lost my son in a car accident was just so special.

How do you start your day? I start the day early, usually 5.30-6am, getting the reading done of all my official stuff. And have a pot of tea. I’m very much a morning person. I’ve written some of my best speeches at 3am.

What do you do in your spare time? I have six grandchildren and a seventh on the way, so I try to spend as much time with them as possible. I’m also a keen gardener and I love cooking. I also play squash and took it up again after a break of nearly 15 years.

How do you like your coffee? I usually have a skimmed-milk cappuccino, with no sugar, but I’m also partial to a piccolo when I need a pick-me-up. We have a coffee machine at home and when I go out I like to spread my business around as much as possible.

What makes your day? I reckon any day above ground is a good day, but the most rewarding time is time spent with my children and grandchildren.

Brian Clarke is Captain of the Forbes Fire Brigade. He’s lived in Forbes all his life and reckons that in a few years he’ll retire here. He likes the town and what it offers, and really can’t see any point in moving somewhere else. His family ties here are very strong and the town has been very solid in providing employment opportunities, firstly with the Council and then with the fire brigade.

Brendon Allegri is a property sales and marketing executive with Ray White Forbes. He is born and bred in Forbes, and, for him too, closeness to family is a huge factor in keeping him there. It’s a small community and provides a nice place to live. The lake provides a great setting for picnics and general relaxation – something that most nearby towns don’t have.

Phyllis Miller is Mayor of Forbes Shire and has been here for just over 40 years. She loves the place because of the loyalty that the other residents have shown her in good times and bad, especially when her son John was killed in a car accident. They obviously love her, too, since she’s never been run to preferences in a ballot for a position on Council. She’s very proud of what she’s achieved for Forbes, especially in attracting business to the town.

Forbes Sport RUGBY LEAGUE It was a mixed day for the Forbes Magpies when they hosted Dubbo CYMS at Spooner Oval last Sunday with the Reserves and the Under 18s winning 22-18 and 28-12 respectively, but the Firsts going down 36-28.

The Magpies let a few chances slip but in the end the size and pace of the well oiled CYMS outfit won the day and took them to the top of the Group XI First Grade ladder, replacing Parkes who were beaten 48-36

by Dubbo Westside. Forbes remains in third position on the ladder.

In other First Grade matches, Narromine trounced Cobar Roosters 58-10 while Wellington won a much closer contest 32-24 against Dubbo Macquarie.

The win by Magpies Reserves took them to the top of the ladder, replacing CYMS. The Under 18s maintained their position as competition leaders.

Next Sunday the three Magpies sides will be at home again, this time against Nyngan.

Memories of hard men

Lottie does Forbes proud at interschool equestrian titles Lottie Jacobson, a 10-year-old Year Five student at St Laurence’s Primary School, Forbes, recently turned in a fine performance at the State Interschool Equestrian Championships, which were held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre (SIEC) in Horsley Park.

She gained a fourth place in the primaryschool division of the Combined Training, plus a second and fifth in her dressage tests.

These results have qualified Lottie to represent NSW at the National Interschool Equestrian Championships, which will be held at SIEC from September 28 to October 3, when more than 2000 school-based 5-18 year olds will gather for competition on the site that hosted the equestrian events for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Lottie lives with her proud parents, Nils and

Sarah Jacobson, on a property at Garema, where she has room for her horse Dandy, known in competitive circles by the more formal title of Samson Fine and Dandy.

Dandy is a 14 year old Arabian riding pony that Lottie has been riding for about three years.

Lottie has been riding since she was four, and has been competing for the past four to five years as a member of the Forbes Pony Club.

The club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary later this year with a special dinner on November 7. Guest speaker, hopefully, will be David Cameron, a former club member and current Australian show-jumping champion. Sydney Western Suburbs prop forward Noel Kelly, one of the toughest men ever to pull on a rugby league jersey, once described what it was like playing the invincible St George Dragons in the days of unlimited tackles.

“For the first half, they’d let you have the ball and just beat you up,” he said. “Then, after half-time, they’d take the ball and score as many times as they wanted. Simple as that.”

One of the hardest nails in that Dragons pack was the late Parkes, Forbes and Eugowra hooker Ian Walsh, who rose to captain both St George and his country.

Walsh would have certainly approved of the way that the NSW tough men laid the groundwork for a memorable victory against Queensland in this year’s second State of Origin match, and he’ll be crawling out of his grave to watch a repeat performance from the Blues forwards in the series decider in Brisbane next Wednesday.

Netball girls net great result in State Age Championships Forbes netball girls returned exhausted last Monday evening from a hectic three-day visit to Windsor for the Netball NSW State Age Championships.

“We’re all very proud of them,” said Robyn Kenny, publicity officer and coach convenor for the Forbes Netball Association, which this year entered four teams in Division Four age competitions — Under 12s, 13s, 14s and 15s.

“I reckon it was our best overall performance yet at the championships, with the Under 13s especially rising to the occasion and improving their position from 14th last

year to third.”

The Under 14s held onto their third place from last year, and emerged undefeated on the first and third days. The Under 12s finished sixth, and the Under 15s, who had never played together in this sort of competition finished ninth — all very creditable results in round-robin competitions that all had 18 or 19 teams.

Now, said Robyn, the Under 13 and 14 girls would just have to wait and see if their results were good enough to be elevated to Division Three next year.

RUGBY UNION FORBES Platypi returned a couple of great results in the Blowes Clothing Cup rugby union games against Mudgee last Saturday, winning their First Grade match 55-22 and the Reserves 25-5.

Unfortunately, the Colts lost their match 31-15.

LADIES GOLF Forbes Golf Club Ladies last Saturday held their annual 4BBB Stroke and Handicap Championships, sponsored by Carolyn Duncan.

With 25 ladies competing, scratch winners were Kerry Stirling and Barbara Drabsch with 86 strokes. Runners-up on countback were Debbie Tilley and Jenny Fletcher with 90 strokes.

There has to be a play-off — Janet Smith and Debbie Dingwell against Kerry Stirling and Barbara Drabsch — to get handicap results as both couples had 66 net.

Nearest to ninth pin was Verna Lane, and

on the 18th Bev Gerdes. Ball sweep winners were Barbara, Kerry, Janet, Debbie, Jenny and Debbie Tilley, 68 on countback.

On Wednesday June 24, 25 players competed in an 18-hole stroke event sponsored

by Robb’s Jewellers.

Fran Smith won Division 1 with 72, while runner up was Jill Cripps with 74.

H Duff won Division 2 with 66, while runner up was Sally Crosby.
