Gayle Williams (Lions Club Secretary), Andrew Rawsthorne (Council), Ray Judge (Lions Club President), and Rocky Walshaw (SES) after the fundraising cheque presentation last week.
Lions Club Supports Future Disaster Relief
On Wednesday 14 June, Forbes and District Lions President Ray Judge visited the Town Hall to present cheques to two local organisations. Robert “Rocky” Walshaw from SES, and Andrew Rawsthorne from Forbes Shire Council, accepted cheques to the value of $5000 each on behalf of the SES and the Bedgerabong Community Flood Fund respectively. The SES donation will be put towards the purchase of a heavy duty dual axle trailer which can be used for transporting sandbags during times of flood. The money donated to the Bedgerabong Community Flood Fund will be put into an account administered by the Forbes Shire Council and made available in times of floods and emergencies to cover the immediate costs for catering, fuel and electricity. The local Lions Club in conjunction with the Australian Lions Foundation were quick to assist when the local area was inundated in September 2016. Funds were made available initially to help those in need of assistance for Food and Household goods with a second round of vouchers for Fuel, Fodder and Fencing. Over $56,000 was distributed to 51 flood affected families to aid in their recovery while waiting for government disaster funding to become available. Lion Peter Bright was the local coordina-
tor of the Lions Flood Relief and manned the office at the HACC centre with the assistance of other Lions members for several months. The cheques given to the two local organisations are residual money from the account which was set up to handle donations from individuals and groups in the days following the flooding. One of these generous individuals was local farmer Brad Shephard who, while flood affected himself, took the time to produce a Flood Calendar, the proceeds of which he shared between the Condobolin and Forbes Lions Clubs for their Flood Relief work. MAYORAL NOTES Former Councillor Brian Mattiske and his family celebrated a significant milestone when his mother, Isabella but better known as Billie, turned 100. The family gathered at Garema Hall and had a lovely afternoon of celebrations. They were delighted to receive the congratulations of the Queen, Governor General and other dignitaries. Congratulations on your milestone. Forbes Shire Council met on Monday night and adopted its budget. The budget and updated fees and charges will come into force on July 1. We’re progressing well on the exciting upgrade of the Central West Livestock Exchange. The scope of works has been through the Saleyards Committee and will go before the July Council meeting. We’ll soon call for expressions of interest to complete the work. Once complete the project will lift the capacity of the cattle yards by 30 per cent and will create six new full-time jobs. Our two motions to the Australian Local Government Conference were both passed.

Short film in Wiradjuri languge screens locally for NAIDOC week
NAIDOC Week Film Screening - As part of NAIDOC week, which runs from 2-9 July, Lachlan Reconciliation group will show the film “Yindyamarra Yambuwan” (respect is everything) to local audiences in Parkes and Forbes, and launch a book of the film. This year’s NAIDOC theme is “Our Languages Matter”, so it is apt that the 15 minute film is in Wiradjuri language, with English subtitles. The film includes introductions from members of the Wiradjuri Council of Elders, Dr Uncle Stan Grant Senior and his sister Aunty Flo Grant. Parkes Shire Council will offer multiple screenings at the Coventry room in the Council building on Saturday 1 July, between 12noon and 4pm. The Forbes Aboriginal & Community Working Party will host a single screening at Forbes Services Club on Saturday 8 July. Gawaymbanha biyambul (welcome all). Leave The Gun – Pick Up A Boscar! Yes, we can now reveal that the spectacular theme for the 2017 BOSCARS Forbes Business Awards is The Godfather. The Godfather story spans 1945 to 1955 and chronicles the life and times of a fictional New York Italian crime family. It tells the Mafia story from the inside, revealing its secrets, charms, and loyalties to questionable causes. For the women wearing beaded dresses

Red Nose Day - Celebrating its 29th year today, Red Nose Day is fundamental in highlighting the devastating fact that each year in Australia over 3,200 babies and children die suddenly and unexpectedly – with causes including stillbirth, SIDS and fatal sleep accidents. Since Red Nose’s inception, over $16.7 million has been devoted to researching stillbirth, neonatal death, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and other causes that contribute to the 3,200 unexpected infant deaths that devastate Australian families each year. Red Nose relies on public support of Red Nose Day to help fund its life-saving research projects as well as education and bereavement support programs. You can get involved today by buying a red nose or other Red Nose Day product, or making a donation. Visit www.rednoseday.com.au to learn more.

Forbes’ Friendly Eisteddfod Families, friends, and judges, were treated to some wonderful performances at the Town Hall in the first half of the annual Forbes Eisteddfod last week. Now in its 24th year, the program comprises seven days of music, speech and drama performances at the Town Hall, and nine full days of dance competition. Performers of all ages from Forbes and surrounding areas took part in the competition, which has become known to all involved as the Friendly Eisteddfod. Committee Treasurer, Karyn Glennan, said that local organisers aim to create a positive, encouraging environment in which people can compete while having a good time. “A lot of Eisteddfods are quite strict and rigid in how they do things,” she said. “And while we are known for being professional, and we have qualified adjudicators giving wonderful feedback, behind the scenes we try to keep things friendly and fun.” And it isn’t just for kids. This year, competitors range from 5-year-olds involved in dance, to musicians in their sixties. “We want all the kids to have the opportunity to perform. It builds their self-esteem
and their confidence. And by seeing older people performing, they learn that they can play music as they get older, and keep improving. “People come to us and say, we’ve been told to start our kids here because this is a much more relaxed atmosphere for them,” said Karyn. There is also a section in the instrumental section that is judged on the basis of whether the performance is entertaining, rather than technical perfection. “We had one group this year that got people up bush dancing,” Karyn said. The dance category of this year’s Eisteddfod will be held at the Forbes High School. It will start on 8 July and run over nine days. “Dance is very strong,” said Karyn. “We’d love to see more people entering in other categories next year, especially in piano and vocal.” Entries for the 2018 Eisteddfod will open next February. For information about performing or volunteering call Karyn Glennan on 0427 512 112. By Rochelle Bright

Young Riders Saddle Up for State Event
Six riders from Forbes Pony Club will compete in the State championships starting tomorrow at the Australian Equine and Livestock Event Centre in Tamworth. The annual event showcases skills in showriding, dressage, and showjumping. For most of the competitors, this isn’t their first state competition. Brooke (aged 10) will compete in showriding and dressage for her fifth state competition, and Kate (15) will contest her fourth showjumping event. Ellie Glasson, (aged 11), will compete in showjumping for the first time this year, but has competed before in other categories. Holly and Lottie Jacobson will both compete in showriding and dressage, and Elizabeth in showriding. All of the girls began riding between the ages of 2 and 5 years, love their horses, and want competitive riding to be part of their future. Holly also wants to be a business woman, “I want to own a horse shop and sponsor my sister if she keeps riding,” she said. “It is hard work, though,” said Kate. And one of the hardest things, along with early morning starts, is “understanding that the horses have bad days, too.” We hope they all have good days next week! By Rochelle Bright

OUR Bloke Peter Bright How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? Elaine and I moved to Forbes from Canberra in 2005 and haven’t had a dull moment since. We especially love the locals who have welcomed us. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I’m heavily involved with the Lions Club and CWA. Managing the Lions Club disaster response team and helping over 50 local farmers during the recent floods was incredibly rewarding.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I enjoy watching Elaine master her latest crafty project; caravanning; and helping friends with their computer and “Smart” phone problems. What are you really good at? I’m a bit of a nerd. These days, mastering new versions of whatever Microsoft, Apple, or Android has thrust upon us is a suitable challenge. What was your best holiday ever? Elaine and I once took a job on a half a million acre cattle station in the Kimberley region during the wet season. We enjoyed a lot of new experiences and hard work while looking after around 15,000 head of cattle.

Meniscus Tears Part 1
Within the normal knee joint are two Cshaped discs of cartilage called the medial and lateral menisci. They have a unique wedged kidney shape, and a blood supply only to their outer third which decreases as you age. Almost 70% of each meniscus is made up of water. These unique properties allow the knee to function as well as it does but they are also the reason why meniscus tears are one of the most common knee joint injuries. The wedge shape of your meniscus assists with the rotational stability that is created by the anterior cruciate ligament especially during pivoting movements. The large water content allows them act like a shock absorber. As you walk, jump or run the knee absorbs large forces with the amount of force increasing exponentially as the speed of movement increases. Your meniscus helps to disperse these compressive forces over the whole knee therefore minimizing the damage to the cartilage that lines the bone surfaces. Meniscal tears are often classified as either traumatic or degenerative. In the younger population, meniscus tears are usually due to trauma by twisting on a slightly bent knee. The traumatic type of meniscal injuries is most often sports related. Commonly there is pain and a ‘pop’ is heard. The knee joint swells and occasionally the athlete will report a locking or painful clicking sensation. Degenerative tears occur in the older population due to natural age-related degeneration and often the person is unaware of the cause of pain and swelling. Stay tuned for my next column which will address the management and rehabilitation for the torn meniscus. For the fitness of you, Linda Reilly

EASY DOES IT... Mark Watts in a moment of deep concentration during Saturday’s 4BBB Stroke Championship
Strong Competition In 4BBB Championship
Last weekend was a big one for local golfers, with the 4BBB Stroke Championship sponsored by John Davis Mazda held on Saturday, followed by the Stableford Medley on Sunday. In Saturday’s 18-hole 4BBB event, the Scratch winners were Steve Betland and Tim West, who combined well to record a 68 scratch score, in a field of 56 competitors. Todd Callaghan and Peter Dawson were Runners-up, beaten on count back. They level-pegged with the winners during the initial stages of the back-9, but stumbled home. The Handicap Champions were Paul Kay and Paul Pymont, who finished with a nett 62. Runners-up were Linden Byrne and Barry Parker with 63 nett, getting there by count back from Ron Morris and Scott Kirkman. The Stableford Medley on Sunday was well enjoyed by many players in spite of the lack of sunshine. Ray Taylor was unstoppable with his 39 points, finishing ahead of Mick Wood on 37 points. The ball sweep went to 36 points, going to Rod Smith (from Tully) and Barb Drabsch. The NTP’s were: 9th – M Wood; 18th – B Shields. The only 2’s were scored by Mick Wood and Rod Smith. This weekend will also be busy, with an 18-hole Stroke event on Saturday, spon-

Also on the horizon are the Lachlan Valley DGA Mixed 4-Ball, scheduled for Sunday July 23 at Parkes, and the Mens 4-Ball vs Par, set for Sun 6 August at West Wyalong. Bowls Round Up Indoor bowls Every Monday from 6pm a group of happy players get together to enjoy a friendly game of indoor bowls. Their love of the game and a good laugh helps them face the cold night air in these winter months. Last Monday, there were peals of laughter from the outset, when Squirt (John Read) turned up with tickets on himself. He has since been reminded to take the tags off his new shirts! Everyone is welcome to join the group at the Forbes Bowling and Sports Club. Just come along any Monday night from 6pm to have a go. Ladies bowls In the ladies competition last week, Alison Cutcliffe and Hazel Prince faced Glenys Ryan and Loris Stewart in the final of the Club Minor Pairs. Both teams were new to the competition and impressed everyone with their skills. Playing 18 ends is challenging, and requires intense concentration throughout the game. In the end, Hazel and Alison won 23-10. Congratulations to both teams for a great effort.
