IMAGE: Forbes Mayoral candidates Cr Phyllis Miller and Cr Graeme Miller
Mayoral Outcome Unclear The 2015 Forbes Mayoral election had a controversial outcome on Tuesday night after a procedural issue at a special meeting that was held. The Forbes Shire Council are now awaiting the legal advice that has been sought to clarify who will be the town’s Mayor. Until then, Cr Phyllis Miller will stay in the position. There were two nominations for the Mayor’s position; Cr Phyllis Miller and Cr Graeme Miller. Each Councillor received four votes from their fellow councillors, with one vote declared informal when it could not be determined who that particular councillor was voting for. This call was made by returning officer General Manager Brian Steffen, who gave his view that since there were two candidates with equal votes, the two names would be placed
in a hat and the name drawn from the hat would be elected as Mayor. The Council was not in agreement with the proposition and resolved to hold another vote with the result of Cr Graeme Miller being elected as Mayor. Mr Steffen said the process of holding another vote was queried on the night of the special meeting, and the decision was made to leave the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions as they were until legal advice can be provided on the matter. The time-frame on the legal advice is unclear. “I am still waiting for the legal advice and once received, all Councillors will be notified in the first instance to resolve a way forward,” Mr Steffen said. MAYORAL NOTES At the moment I am still Mayor following an informal vote during our mayoral election on Tuesday night. Council is waiting on legal advice and the community will be kept informed. Whatever the outcome ends up being, hopefully all will be good for the community. On Tuesday afternoon we received some devastating news that Forbes Hospital is going to lose the Central Sterilisation Unit to Parkes. We fought a good fight knowing and understanding budget restraints of NSW Health but it is still upsetting considering we are doing more theatre work than Parkes. I have also received assurances from NSW Health that if anymore services are going from our hospital they will let me know. They have also assured me that there will be no extra cost to our hospital with the Central Sterilisation Unit going to Parkes. On Tuesday morning I was proud to unveil a memorial plaque at Forbes Croquet Club for Keith Croker. Keith was a tireless volunteer and was dedicated to the community of Bedgerabong and Forbes. When Keith and his wife Dorothea moved to Forbes 15 years before he passed away, they both got involved in a range of activities. He was the president of Forbes Neighbourhood Watch, Forbes Men’s Probus and was still serving as president of the Forbes Croquet Club when he died. Keith and Dorothea were both presented life membership to the Forbes Croquet Club in May last year for all of their hard work and dedication to the club. You may notice some work taking place at the basketball courts at Grinsted Oval in the near future. At our August meeting last Thursday, Council approved to upgrade all three basketball courts to bring them back up to scratch, including renewal of line marking and new
Your free weekly guide to what’s happening in and around Forbes...shop locally first! backboards. This was due to a request from junior basketball and we are pleased to be able to upgrade this public facility. Council’s road works team is currently working very hard on the Northern Heavy Vehicle Bypass. Once finished this is going to be of great benefit to the Central West Livestock Exchange and the industrial area. Thanks to governments of all persuasions we are very lucky to have received funding to push it forward. I would also like to give a warm welcome to our new Director of Engineering and Technical Services, John Zannes. John is settling in really well on all early accounts and I think he is going to be excellent for Council and the community. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

LEEP into Success The Forbes High School Lachlan Engagement and Enrichment Program (LEEP) saw stage 2 and 3 students from across five public schools visit the senior school on Tuesday 25 August for an outstanding day of learning. LEEP encourages students to work in groups and with mentors from the High School in two set subject disciplines – mathematics and science. The program enables students to experience interactive and challenging projects that inspires peers in a 21st century learning environment. Glenn Stewart, Director of Public Schools NSW, and two visiting principals, Mr Thomas from Forbes Public and Mr McAlister from Forbes North were all very impressed with the success and engagement of the program. “It was fantastic to see students from the five schools working together and engaged in project based learning,” said Mr Thomas. “This high level learning opportunity created by the Forbes High School teachers and mentors enables students to be immersed in an environment that facilitates the development of individuals to be extended through significant engagement and problem solving tasks.” LEEP is held on one day each term and runs for an entire school day and delivers a shared approach to the education of younger students.

YAWBA Hi-Point Dinner Young Appaloosa Western Breeds Association (YAWBA) held their first presentation HiPoint Dinner for the year on 27 June at the Forbes Inn Hotel and those in attendance were noticeably excited to see who would win and who would be named runner-up. Amazing prizes included belt buckles, trophies, hats, medals, rugs and a great sponsored stud service. The certificate was presented to the overall halter horse owned and shown by locals Amber and Leah Helwig. Members from as far as Goulburn came for the evening; a worthy drive for the longtime showing mother/daughter team of Debbie and Nicole Polley, who picked up many awards. The Hi-Point Tie for Appaloosa halter was with the only horse not to miss a show, owned and trained by our president Kathie Garner. The black appaloosa gelding was bred by a YAWBA sponsor and member, Tanya Thomas of Windsong Stud. The Alternative Trophy, sponsored by Sam-

Runner-up in the amateur class was Natasha Peasley and Yallawa Rockin The Stars. The YAWBA Rising Star Award went to Mel West and Players Lucky Dream. They had a great few shows at the end of the season and will be a great team in the future. YAWBA Committee Member of the Year went to Stevie Jackson and Her Newest Unborn Member Jelly Bean. 24th Small Makers Wine Show School Care This year, the 24th NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show in Forbes received 580 entries from 91 wineries. During the three days of judging, about 480 litres of wine were poured and 3000 glasses used, which all have to be washed and dried. Starting in 1992, the NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show is now the largest of its kind. The Hunter Valley’s de luliis Wines owner and winemaker Mike de luliis was again the Chairman of Judges for the 2015 Show, leading a team of six judges and three associate judges. The Show used a blind tasting process and there were two judging panels. Each judge scored the wine out of a total of 20 points; three for colour, seven for smell and ten for taste with a combined score of 60. A gold medal was awarded to the wines that scored 55.5+ points, a silver medal for between 51-55 points and a bronze medal for wines that scored between 46.5-50.5 points. 40 wines were awarded with gold across 29 classes, with Silkman wines 2014 Reserve Chardonnay taking out the Clear Image Trophy for best white wine in show, and Lerida Estate 2014 Lake George Shiraz Viognier winning the Vintec Transtherm Trophy for best red wine in show.

Applications are now open for schools across the Central West region to access funding that will help to establish new out of school hour care services. “Primary schools from all sectors may apply for one-off grants of up to $20,000 to help with the cost of establishing these services in time for the start of the 2016 school year,” Mr Gee said. “Principals of primary schools that do not presently have before and after school care are being asked to consult with their communities to determine the level of demand for an out of school hour care service at their schools.” “Schools that do not have the space to establish an OSHC service on site are also being asked to consult with their local councils or other community organisations to identify a site for potential OSHC,” Mr Gee said. Grants for eligible schools will be awarded on the basis of a school’s capacity to establish and support an OSHC service. Applications are accessible from the NSW Department of Education, Catholic Education Commission NSW and the Association of Independent Schools of NSW websites.

My House My Home Forbes residents bracing for Winter bill shock this Spring

During Spring, many Forbes residents may be sprung with a nasty surprise – a higher than expected winter energy bill. Increased energy consumption from using heaters, electric blankets and dryers during the colder months means that energy bills for the winter quarter – which usually arrive in early Spring are often much higher than throughout the rest of the year. Energy comparison and advice service iSelect says many customers contact them during spring having experienced ‘bill shock’ from higher than expected winter bills. In addition, a Galaxy Research survey commissioned by iSelect in June found that almost three quarters of NSW respondents believe their gas and electricity bills had increased significantly in recent years, with an overwhelming 86 per cent feeling they currently pay too much for energy. Laura Crowden, spokesperson for iSelect, said gas and electricity bills can vary significantly between winter and the rest of the year depending on how much energy Forbes residents have been using for heating the home. The survey found that when faced with a higher than expected bill, 11 per cent of NSW residents add it to their credit debt, while 11 per cent will simply pay it late. However only 18 per cent of NSW residents are comparing other offers or switching to a different provider. Laura said Forbes residents who receive higher than expected winter energy bills
should consider providers and plans that offer better value or more flexible payment options. “Many providers are now offering customers the ability to pay bills monthly, fortnightly or even weekly. Others are offering what is known as ‘bill smoothing’ which means providers will estimate your annual energy use and divide it into even monthly installments so you know exactly how much you will need to pay each month, avoiding that dreaded bill shock.” Laura said that while reducing energy use is important, the most effective way to avoid the shock of an unexpectedly high bill is for local residents to ensure they’re on the best value plan to begin with. “The bulk of your energy bill is made up of network charges and unfortunately this means that reducing your energy consumption is unlikely to significantly reduce your bill.” Laura recommended Forbes residents take the time to understand their current usage patterns and find out how they are currently being charged. “The best way to save money is to make sure you are on a plan which offers discounted rates and cost effective tariffs suited to your consumption patterns.” Laura said many consumers adopt a ‘setand-forget’ mindset when it comes to energy and haven’t reviewed their energy contract in years. This means they aren’t taking advantage of the variety of discount offers cur-

Many are offering generous introductory rebates and discounts for paying on time or online.” Laura said providers are currently offering up to 35 per cent off for paying on time but Forbes residents need to be realistic about their payment habits before signing up for offers like this. “Pay on time discounts are fantastic if you know you always pay your bill on time but you often forget to pay your bill by the due date then you could end up paying a lot more than you were expecting.” Laura said the range of plans available can deliver greater flexibility but can also be overwhelming. Laura encourages Forbes residents to con-
tact an energy comparison expert to discuss their individual needs and find out whether switching to a different plan or provider could save them money or offer greater flexibility. “Remember to have a copy of your latest bill handy so you can accurately compare prices,” said Laura. Top Tips for finding the best energy deal: 1. Save money with the right plan. The best way to save money is to make sure you are on the best value plan. 2. Pay your bills weekly, fortnightly or monthly or sign up for bill smoothing to avoid bill shock. 3. Be wary of pay on time discounts. Paying on time could save you up to 35% but if you pay your bills late you could end up paying a

lot more than expected. 4. Look out for special offers. Increased competition means more retailers offering generous introductory offers or rebates to entice new customers such as credit towards your account. 5. No fixed term contracts mean you won’t be stung with exit fees if you decide to switch to a better offer. Great for renters who move more regularly. 6. Some providers are offering fixed rate plans which give you the peace of mind of fixing your rates for up to two years with no price rises guaranteed. 7. Shop around and use increased energy competition to your advantage by comparing current offers. Call an energy comparison service with a copy of your latest bill handy.

Dr Richard Draper How long have you lived in the region? I was born in Parkes, left at 16 to go to Melbourne, then Newcastle, Gosford and Wagga and then returned to Parkes when I was 30. What is your favourite thing about Forbes? The lake, and it has a more relaxed feel around the centre of town, I like the feel of the CBD. What are your passions/hobbies? Road racing motorcycles. What is your biggest fear? To be judged as overly normal. Who inspires you the most? My mate Billy has had a kidney transplant, a heart bypass and a hip replacement and is still an incredibly active water ski racer who works super hard. He genuinely is my hero. What do you love about your job? On the odd occasion, being able to make a difference to someone’s life.
Rock Hard Australian rock legend Daryl Braithwaite will be performing for fans at the Forbes Inn on Friday 16 October and his famous voice still sounds as fantastic as ever. Best known as the lead vocalist of Australian rock band Sherbert, Daryl is now in his sixties but a lifetime addiction to surfing means he is as fit and strong as some men half his age. Daryl and his live band have been selling out pubs and clubs in every corner of the country for years, with several members of the group having performed with him for decades. The last member joined the band 14 years ago meaning the current line-up have been together as long as Sherbet was. ‘Forever the Tourist’ is in a sense Daryl’s personal gift to his most loyal fans and a thank you for their unrelenting support over time. Performing new emotion-filled, stateof-the-art songs, Daryl and his band will introduce a whole new generation of music lovers to one of the most famous and beloved voices in the history of Australian music. Tickets are $30. Fans of Australian music cannot afford to miss out on this memorable performance.
What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? A world where you have to earn the right to have a child.

Forbes Golfers Have More Success GOLF Forbes golfers have had some success of late. We have a pair going to Bonville as the Lachlan Valley District Foursomes Champs. And the winners of the Forbes Holden Scramble are going away to Sydney. And we have some new winners! A group comprising Andrew Dukes, Phil Maher, Marty Cahill and Michael Browne attended the West Wyalong Holden Scramble. They returned home, victorious over the 14 teams that attended. The conditions were really wet, but this was a must-do event. The Forbes team won the day with 61 1/8, from a W/Wyalong team (61 ¼), and 3rd (613/8), 4th (61 ½), 5th (61 5/8). As you see, the top five teams were within half a stroke of each other. Other prizes they collected were: A-grade NTP twice (thanks to Andrew) and Team NTP for second shot, on the 18th. But it must be said that the defining moment came down to Marty Cahill. As he has done in the past, Marty approached the 18th tee knowing that he needed a good one down the middle, and having duck-hooked his tee shot off the previous hole! With consummate ease, and nary a thought to the pressure on his shoulders, he smote a delightful shot down the middle. His team applauded. Andy did the honours and fired a 6-iron to the pin (git Team NTP) and then got the putt for a very good score. These guys are off to Sydney (Riverside Oaks) in mid-October. By Short Putt
Golf Tip from Daniel Hello golfers! This month I will be talking about Putting. Yes, drive for show and putt for dough. A common remark heard around the golf course and for good reason. The average number of putts a golfer will have per round is between 34-38 putts, and they will hit their driver on average 10-12 times per round. Yet we insist on spending 90%, or even 100%, of our practice time trying to master the 300m drive. If you are serious on lowering your scores, 2 things need to be done. Make sure you have a putter that is suited to you, and then spend a good amount of your practice time out on the putting green or even on the carpet at home. When doing this a few important things to concentrate on are: 1. Keep your eyes and head completely still. This will ensure the putter face remains on line through-out the stroke. 2. Make sure your back swing is the same length as the follow through. Doing this will improve the speed of your putts.

Forbes Sport RUGBY LEAGUE It was a bittersweet final round for the Forbes Magpies on August 30 at Spooner Oval, with both Reserve Grade and the Under 18s teams getting pushed out of the Premiership competition by Dubbo Macquarie. The Under 18s were beaten on the bell with Macquarie breaking a 14-all stalemate with a try in the final minute, taking the win with the final score at 20-14. The Reserve Grade team bowed out of the race with a 2 point loss in extra time. The final score was 18-16, a disappointing loss for the Magpies. Both of the teams did Forbes proud and were gracious in defeat after a huge effort in the 2015 season. Good luck to the Macquarie Raiders and Parkes Spacemen as they head into the Grand Final next weekend.
MEN’S SOCCER IMAGE: Forbes North Primary kids enjoying the fun AFL has to offer
AFL’s Giants Coaches Visit Forbes AFL Sporting Schools wants our next generation of students getting out and playing sport on a daily basis. To make this idea a reality, we need to act now and help our children appropriate sport into their daily lives, just like millions of other Australians who have made sport their daily habit. Sporting Schools aims to nurture the sporting life of young people in their primary school years by developing the relationships between schools and local sports clubs. In partnership with more than 30 national sporting organisations, the Australian Sports Commission has the resources available to help sporting clubs, coaches and teachers run these activities and get children active, engaged and having fun before, during and after school. The AFL’s Greater Western Sydney Giants
team have coaches that conduct these activities through fun programs, visiting towns and communities across the state to encourage more children to get involved in sports. Forbes North recently hosted one of these events, showcasing the great work these young coaches are involved in. “Schools can register as a sporting school, apply for funding and nominate sports programs they wish to run at their school each term, meaning they can subsidise costs and essentially run programs for free” says Carmen Amor from the GWS Giants. “It’s a great opportunity for students who perhaps wouldn’t normally participate in sport outside of school. It’s also a great chance to learn skills and have a go at various kinds of sports.” “It’s an amazing initiative.”
In the 1st Division, the Forbes All Stars beat Lightning FC in the elimination final. The final score was 5-1. Forbes Gunns had a bye. In the 2nd Division, the Forbes Bushrangers lost to the Cambridge Saints 4-1. The upcoming 1st Division game will be Forbes Gunns vs Rawson Home Raptors at 2pm in Forbes. This game is the major SemiFinal and whoever wins will go through to the Grand Final played on September 20. The Forbes All Stars will play against Tichborne Tigers in Parkes at 2pm in an elimination final. These two teams played in the Grand Final last year. In the 2nd Division, Forbes Bushrangers will play against Condobolin at 12pm in Forbes. This is a must win match for Forbes. Spectators are welcome at all games so get on down to the Botanical Gardens on Sunday and cheer on Forbes in the finals!
