The 140th Forbes Show The Forbes Show was blessed with perfect weather last weekend with many people coming through the gates to enjoy the attractions, competitions and events. The Forbes Show Society sold out of the pre-sale ride tickets they had available in the lead up to the show and they received quite a new number of members this year. “We were very lucky weather wise,” said Jan Facey who is finishing up her final official year as the Show Secretary. “All the pavilion entries were wonderful, the rides people were very happy with the crowd and overall it was a very good show. There were no major incidents and everything went well.” “The highlight for me was working with the handicraft stewards who helped make my job
easier when I had so much to do,” said Jan. “I’m looking forward to next year when I can actually get out and enjoy the show and see things for myself.” The dog high jump events and hay stacking events both proved to be very popular again this year, and the beef cattle numbers were up. The centre ring was full of horses all weekend with show jumping and hacks competitions. The winner of the Forbes Showgirl (18-24) competition was Stacey Clarke, who said “it has been a great experience to be part of this and has given me a greater knowledge and understanding of the rural community, and the ability to communicate with the Forbes community.”

RANTS and Raves
Our Favourite Tradie MAYORAL NOTES Forbes has welcomed the Live Life Get Active fitness program to town and I enjoyed participating in sessions with the trainers and first group on Monday. Live Life Get Active is a great initiative that delivers free access to local personal trainers and group fitness classes in Forbes for the next 200 days. From Monday to Friday, classes are available in the morning on Grinstead Oval. Each session has been well attended, especially as we have been enjoying such beautiful weather of late. You can join in by registering on the website www.livelifegetactive.com. I highly recommend the program, it is a fantastic way to get fit, meet some friends and stay healthy. A big thank you goes to IGA who are sponsoring the initiative along with Forbes Shire Council. The 140th annual Forbes PA&H Show was held last Friday and Saturday, and what a great show it was. The committee should congratulate themselves on delivering another great event to our community, which was enhanced by the first warm weekend of spring. It was fantastic that Forbes Shire Council won Best Commercial Display – Outside 2015, thank you to the staff who volunteered their time over the weekend. There has been representation made to me by a member of the Forbes community in relation to improving access on playground equipment so that children with impairments may be able to enjoy the facilities with greater ease. After speaking with this mother, I have learnt that it is relatively simple to convert play equipment to provide better access for people of all abilities, including platforms, paths and swing modifications. The philosophy is to be inclusive and allow users of all abilities to access the same equipment. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM
After reading the Thumbs Up last week to our Hot Tradie on a roof on a spring day, I thought that it was time to spend some time talking about our Tradies. We all love our Tradies, because they come into our homes in a time of need and get us back on track. I have conducted a number of small to medium business seminars over the past 15 years, and one type of attendee is the local tradie, whether it be a plumber, electrician or tiler, amongst others. I love doing the exercise of asking the group if they have ever sat at home waiting for a tradie to turn up. The overwhelming response is YES. I also get some great responses from the tradies in the room, ranging from, I always ring if I am going to be late, or if I cant make it that day, and some go as far to include in their local advertising, something along the lines of: Peter the Plumber, who always Turns Up on Time! We are all busy people however there are some basics that tradies need to take on board. A couple of suggestions to make us love you even more could be: 1. Always return your phone calls within two hours 2. Always turn up on time for an appointment 3. If you can’t make an appointment, call and reschedule. 4. Make sure you complete the job as requested 5. Ensure that you leave everything neat and tidy.
I am sure most of you already do this, however these are some helpful reminders. Readers of the Forbes Phoenix, share with us your local tradie experience, tell us who is your favourite plumber, electrician, tiler, gardener, etc and help them win a voucher to the value of $50 from their favourite store as well as you, as the nominating reader, also receives a voucher to the value of $50. Send us in some photos as well and a big thumbs up to all the tradies in town who do such a great job. By Cheryl Newsom

close. Despite Wednesday’s overwhelming positive tone, Thursday followed up with a sharp reversal in direction for the medium and broader microns, while the finer microns were less effected and even displayed a firming tendency for the more stylish 40nkt types. Merino skirtings followed a similar pattern, opening with moderate rises before easing back on the final day. Crossbreds were driven higher on both days on the back of a small offering. The limited 25/26-micron range recorded strong growth, mainly on the last day when they jumped 30 cents. The Merino Carding Indicators posted another steady result, continuing their climb back to the 1100-cent level. 40,755 bales are expected next week nationally, including a three day Melbourne sale. Ladies Auto Training Night A great initiative for women of all ages is taking off in Forbes to give ladies the space and opportunity to expand their knowledge in auto maintenance and repairs. The Ladies Auto Training Night runs from Nic’s Garage, a local family-run business that has just recently celebrated its 1st birthday, and encourages women to get their hands dirty and learn about a new aspect of selfsustainability. The most recent program ran over two nights with a philosophy of “teaching and empowering women to independently and fearlessly maintain their own cars”. Entry was free for women of all ages and complimentary champagne and nibbles were on offer for the two groups of women who came along. “We wanted to talk about many things that a lot of women may not know,” said Felicity from Nic’s Garage, who came up with the idea earlier this year. “We covered things like how to jump start your car, how to change a tyre,
how to check fluids and things like that.” “We also talked about what to look out for with certain bigger issues and problems, and then opened it up for questions to cover more specific things.” When it comes to vehicle maintenance, Felicity knows how important and empowering it is to feel independent. “My dad was big on independence and he made sure that I knew all that stuff,” she said. “I always wanted to be a mechanic!” “It’s really good seeing the ladies walk away at the end of the night saying ‘I can do that’.” Nic and Felicity plan to keep running the Ladies Auto Night in the future, with another event coming up in December. It’s a great opportunity to get together for a girls night and have fun while expanding your auto knowledge. The Western Plains Cultural Centre (Dubbo) is once again the host for the extravaganza of raw talent, surprising sophistication and ebullient teenage angst that is ArtExpress 2015. Drawn from the best students from last year’s HSC course in Visual Arts, it encompasses the hopes, dreams, fears and concerns of today’s youth. The most surprising thing about any ArtExpress exhibition is that it continues to be surprising. It is all too easy to become jaded about the seriousness of the young, about their earnest idealism and strong belief that only they can save the world, but each time we get this exhibition their sheer exuberance, passion, creativity and inventiveness wins over even the most cynical of gallery goers. This year promises to be no different by being completely different. This exhibition was chosen by staff at the WPCC and features young artists from around the region and beyond. Art Express officially opens on Friday 18 September at 6pm.

Local Bloke in Los Angeles McDonald’s Forbes Restaurant Manager Justin Miller has embarked on a trip of a lifetime this week! He will be travelling to Los Angeles for the 2015 McDonald’s Restaurant Managers Convention; an exciting and rare opportunity. Justin left from Sydney on Monday and is set to have a life changing experience as he has never before been outside of the state of NSW. “I was born and bred in Forbes,” Justin said last week before leaving. “The furthest I’ve ever been from home was Moree!” The convention will be about leadership practises, the knowledge and confidence of
managers, working through any issues and trying to improve the business overall. “It’s a great opportunity to branch out and meet other country stores, see how they run and get up to standards with business practise,” Justin said. Justin joins a group of 4 managers and a supervisor from the Forbes/Parkes/Cowra area who have gone to LA to attend the convention. As part of the program, they will get to visit Disneyland and Universal Studios in LA before heading to Las Vegas for a few days to look around. By Rosi Broom
Young Appaloosa Western Breeds Association (YAWBA) are a Forbes based organisation who work tirelessly to live their passion of showing horses. “We all work on this every day of the week,” said Stevie Jackson, Secretary of YAWBA. “We have big ambitions!” In their second year, YAWBA are holding their first show of the season on Saturday 26 September. “The whole thing went so well last year that it seems like the sky is the limit,” said YAWBA Vice President Leah Helwig. “So this year we are going to keep getting bigger and better.” “We wanted to give something for kids and families to take part in, and so they could come and learn about a different perspective of the western show industry,” Stevie said, “and we cater to everyone from the beginners to the serious competitors. It’s a fun family environment.” “We cater for the elite, but you don’t have to be elite to be there,” said Leah. The YAWBA Shows are so popular, people travel long distances to take part. For the upcoming event, they have people travelling to the Young arena from Mudgee, Dubbo, Forbes, Goulburn, Yass and the Blue Mountains. The BreastScreen Van is leaving town on Monday 28 September so there isn’t much time left to book in and take the opportunity to get checked. Data shows that approximately 174 women in western NSW are diagnosed with breast cancer each year but only one in two eligible women across the state are receiving their regular mammogram through BreastScreen NSW. Women in the Western NSW Local Health District are being urged to have their regular breast screen even if they have no family history of breast cancer as 9 in 10 women
diagnosed with the disease have no hereditary links. It is absolutely vital that all women aged 5074 receive their regular two-yearly mammogram. If your cancer is picked up by BreastScreen, you are almost half as likely to need a mastectomy because the regular mammograms can pick up breast cancers early. This gives women the best chance for less invasive treatment and a good outcome if something is picked up in the scan. The BreastScreen Van will also be screening this Saturday 19 September from 8:30am to 12 noon in Forbes.
Allergy Advice With the coming of the spring season, it means the coming of the allergy season and for some, the dreaded hay fever. For those who suffer from hay fever, this can be a debilitating condition with symptoms ranging from a runny nose and sneezes to red, itchy or watery eyes, itchy ears, nose and throat and headaches. There are some ways to help limit the symptoms of hay fever by reducing your exposure of pollens. Check the pollen count forecast and stay indoors if it is high. Also staying indoors on windy days or after thunderstorms can help limit exposure. However, it is often not possible to stay in-
side when you need to work, take the kids to sporting events or do general everyday tasks. The pharmacists at Flannery’s and Life Pharmacies recommend a three pronged approach to combat the symptoms of hay fever which includes a non-sedating antihistamine tablet which can control sneezing and itching, a corticosteroid nasal spray for blocked or runny noses and an antihistamine eye drop to help itchy, watery eyes. If you would like help with your hay fever symptoms, call into Flannery’s Pharmacy or Life Pharmacy and let the experienced, knowledgeable team help you with advice and products to clear you up during allergy season.

Health Smart 2015 National Stroke Week
Parkinson’s Support Group
This year’s National Stroke Week runs between 14-20 September with more than 3000 events held across the country in conjunction with the event. National Stroke Week is about raising awareness to prevent stroke in Australia. The National Stroke Foundation encourages all Australians to be aware of what stroke is, how to recognise a stroke and what to do, live healthy to reduce the risk of stroke and get a regular health check. Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. Statistics suggest that 1 in 6 people will have a stroke in their lifetime and in 2012 there were nearly 130,000 stroke survivors under the age of 65 in the wider community. In 2015 it is estimated there will be more than 50,000 new and recurrent strokes – that is 1000 strokes every week or one stroke every 10 minutes.
On Tuesday 13 October Parkes Parkinson’s Support Group will welcome a guest, Antoinette Riley who is the support group’s coordinator at Parkinson’s NSW. So that Antoinette can meet with members of support groups in our region, the Parkes Group are inviting Bathurst, Cowra, Dubbo and Orange support groups to join them. As coordinator, Antoinette keeps over 60 support groups in NSW in the loop with current happenings to assist sufferers of Parkinson’s disease to enjoy the best quality of life possible. This involves considerable travel and other communication methods. Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive disease of the nervous system marked by tremor, muscular rigidity and slow, imprecise movement. Support groups offer information sharing and encouragement to people living with PD, their carers and families. There are several services available at Parkinson’s NSW including counselling, as well as current information on programs such as PD Warrior and Dance which can be tailored to suit each person and improve mobility. Funding for Forbes Preschool Forbes Preschool Kindergarten will be the grateful recipients of a $7000 NSW Government grant that aims to improve access to preschool for children in rural and remote communities. “It was a lovely surprise when Andrew Gee came out to visit us last Friday with a $7000 cheque to ensure all children can access a preschool education,” says Amy Shine, Director of the preschool. “The money will help support our new building project and increase the available spaces allowing more children access to preschool and we are committed to maintaining our low fees, which start at $5 a day.”
Member for Orange Andrew Gee said the initiative provides these types of grants to community preschools in outer regional, remote and very remote areas. “This initiative helps early educators connect with families who are not sending their children to preschool and ensures children who are located in rural areas are able to access a quality early childhood education,” Mr Gee said. “The program is designed to support preschools’ outreach initiatives, improving engagement and universal access for hard to reach and vulnerable children in these areas.” By Rosi Broom

Steve McAlister How long have you lived in Forbes? I started working in Forbes in January 2013 but have only recently made the permanent move here. Work takes me to places all over NSW. What are your hobbies? I love sport – cricket, rugby league, AFL and golf. I also enjoy photography. Where is your favourite place in the world? I grew up in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and have a special connection to the area. What do you love about your job? I work with children every day and have the opportunity to shape young minds and create the future. Who inspires you most? The fantastic staff at Forbes North Public School and anybody who dedicates their heart and soul to improving young lives. What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? For every child to be the best that they can be in the field they wish to pursue, and every parent and carer to realise the potential in their children, appreciating the benefits of a quality education.

Snake Season
September sees snakes waking up from hibernation. Please be aware of this when out in the paddocks, stock routes and around town with your animals. If your animal displays any of the following signs ring the vet straight away for advice as they are the most common signs we see with brown snake bites: • Collapse • Difficulty breathing • Weakness • Struggling to stand on its back legs • Vomiting • Colic if it is a horse The Forbes area does have King Brown and Black snakes as well. These show different signs – a really painful, swollen bite site that is oozing blood. It is important to identify what snake has bitten your animal to assist us in knowing what anti-venom to give. Brown snakes and black snakes have different treatments. If you are unsure what it is and if it is possible and safe to do so a photo of the snake’s head will help us, otherwise we can do tests on your animal to try and work it out. Cats can go for up to 12 hours before they start showing signs, dogs will usually show signs within 2 hours of a brown snake bite. Please bring in all animals who have possibly been in contact with the snake for assessment as some animals show absolutely no signs before it is too late. If in doubt please call the clinic for advice or bring your animal straight in. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Mens Foursomes Title Decided GOLF After two delays because of bad weather, the Mens Foursomes Championship was finally held over two days last weekend. Saturday played the first round with a field comprising 40 players in 20 teams. The first round Scratch leaders were Steve Betland and Mark Collits, who finished the day with a par 72 round. Close on their heels were Andrew Dukes and Shane Sallaway, 7 shots adrift. The first round Handicap leaders were Betland/Collits with a nett 70. Not far behind them was Craig Barrett and Allan Rees on nett 72. The ball sweep went to 73 and was shared by those above and: 72.5 – B Squires/P Kay, R Morris/S Kirkman, 73 – B Carpenter/B Shine.
Nearest the pins went to: 9th – A Dukes; 18th – M Collits, of whom only Mark got his ‘2’. In fact, there were only two 2’s scored all day, with Morris/Kirkman bagging one on the 3rd. On Day Two, Dukes/Sallaway got off to a flyer with a 1-under 35 for the first nine. They lost shots on the 13th and the 15th but still returned with a Scratch 76. Runnerup for the second round were Betland/Collits, with a somewhat untidy 78. The Day Two Handicap winners were Morris/Kirkman. They improved their scratch score by five shots from the previous day and finished with a 67 ½ nett. Behind them was the pairing of Bown/Newport, finishing with 71 nett. The ball sweep went to 72, and were dis-

tributed by: those above plus P Dawson/R Taylor. The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Barnes; 18th – M Spice. No-one scored 2’s that day. The Results for the Overall Championship are: Scratch Winners – Steve Betland/ Mark Collits 150. Scratch Runners-up – Andrew Dukes/ Shane Sallaway 155. Handicap Winners – Scott Kirkman/ R Morris 140. Handicap Runners-up – Ian Bown/ Graham Newport 146, on count back. The Sunday Stableford Medley was available for those men and ladies who were not involved in any of the Championship events. The winner was Milton Cartwright with 40 points, and showing a welcome return to good form. Runner-up was Tom Edols with a tidy 36 points. They both enjoyed the splendid conditions. By Short Putt
