Top Gong for Local Olive Grove Forbes olive growers Clare and Greg Gibson of Gibson’s Grove have taken out the top gong at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show this year. They were awarded the Gold and Champion prize for their Manzanilla olives and they couldn’t be more thrilled about winning the 2015 competition after they took the top prize 5 years ago. “It’s not the first time we’ve entered. We actually enter every year and always get bronze, silver or gold. This is our second winning Championship,” said Greg Gibson. The Gibson family came to their 300 acre property in 1994 and after stocking it with cattle they decided to diversify their farming interests by integrating an olive grove on their property. They planted 2,000 trees between 1996 and

2002 with equal numbers of Manzanillo, Paragon and Carraggiolla. At Gibson’s Grove they produce a range of olive oils and table olives which are handpicked. They bottle, cask and tin their oil on the property and cover an extensive boutique market. Their olives have been sold all over the country including the Melbourne markets, in Business and First Class on Qantas and Singapore Airlines and major hotels in the Blue Mountains. “It’s very good because it shows that our 2010 effort wasn’t a fluke and we are consistent with our product,” said Greg. The Sydney Royal Fine Food Show is made up of ten competitions held in summer and spring and showcases the best the country has to offer in a wide range of produce. By Rosi Broom

Deputy Mayor’s Contribution to Forbes MAYORAL NOTES At our September Council meeting last Thursday, we said farewell to John Chambers who has retired from his position as Plant Operator – Grader after almost 42 years with Council. He has been a dedicated member of staff and we wish John and his wife Christine all the very best. We had a presentation from Matt Clifton regarding VANFEST and told the very exciting news about the Friday night concert. Matt also spoke to us about the camping options that will be available at the Showground and it almost makes me want to camp there! There are even hair straighteners and hair dryers available for use along with modern bathroom facilities. Last Friday I attended The Good Oil – Contractors Field Day at the Central West Livestock Exchange. There were a number of speakers for the day discussing a number of topics. President of Australian Custom Harvesters Bob Wythes organised the event for the farming community. One of the issues discussed was that it is very difficult for the industry to get permits through the Heavy Vehicle Regulator and is very time consuming as they have to gain approval from council area to council area. Council has made representation on behalf of the industry to have preapproved routes to enable the process to speed-up. Today is the second of our free microchipping days for dogs and cats at Nelson Park. There will be a third event held later this year so if you missed out on an appointment today, contact Council to register for the next one. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

Following the appointment of Graeme Miller as Deputy Mayor, we thought it was timely to interview him. Graeme first became a Councillor when he was approached by former Mayor, Alistair Lockhart to stand as an Independent candidate in 2004, following the sale of his farm. After a break, he then came back onto the Council 3 years ago in 2012. Graeme’s farm was located 16 kms west of Forbes, with a total of 5,500 acres and was held with his brother Phillip. The farm was sold because there were no family members interested in continuing on the farm, as they had moved on with other careers. Graeme has been involved in community work all his life, starting off with Rotaract, a junior form of Rotary; the Show Society (prime

lamb steward), and participating in P & C at Forbes North Primary School and Forbes High School, when his children were at those schools. When his mother went into Aged Care he then went onto the Board of the Forbes Jemalong Aged People’s Assn and he has been Chairman of that Board for 10-12 years, and just elected again. In addition, he is also Chairman of the Parkes Forbes Community Housing and has been the longest serving Chairman with over 10 years service. Graeme also sits on The Australian Livestock Marketing Board, which represents all of the saleyards around Australia.

Under the Hammer

IMAGE: Logan and Catherine Maloney.

Sports Initiative for Disabled Kids Catherine Maloney is on a mission for her son and for disabled kids everywhere. Working alongside Wheelchair Sports NSW, she wants to build a sporting and play lifestyle for disabled children in Forbes to help create a sense of achievement and belonging. “There are many children with disabilities here, but no one ever sees them,” says Catherine whose son Logan was left with a range of physical disabilities after a fall at two and a half years. “These children need exercise and a place where they can form a social network, selfesteem and form who they are through play. They develop their social awareness through play at a young age and if they don’t get the opportunity, there can be many repercussions in their behaviour and how they turn out in their adult life.” Catherine says the program doesn’t have to be competitive, it’s meant to be a hit and a giggle; kids having some casual fun with sports like fencing, basketball, rugby and ten-

nis. There is also the possibility of lining up coaches and para-Olympians to mentor and buddy the children. She envisions an inclusive environment where kids don’t have to be wheelchair bound and participants can be both physically or mentally disabled. “I want to help them feel like they’ve achieved something, rather than just watching the other kids,” she says. “A lot of them spend so much time in hospital which is exclusive and when they’re at home, they need to be included. Their home time should be a happy time.” If you would like to help Catherine make this dream a reality, head down to Forbes Services Memorial Club on Wednesday 30 September between 12pm-2pm to discuss the development of sporting opportunities for individuals with a disability within the Forbes area. Sports coaches are also encouraged to take an interest and turn up to the meeting. By Rosi Broom

Friday 18 September saw the end to a huge five week campaign for Ray White Rural Forbes. They took four properties from Forbes, Parkes and Lake Cargelligo to auction and with the use of the white out and a mix of other media, this campaign saw a total of over 150 enquiries. On the final day the team managed a total of 27 registered bidders in the room and having the always reliable Angus MacLoud at the helm, they managed 3 from 5 under the hammer. Forbes property “Nirvana” sold under the hammer for $405,000 followed by “Montana”, another Forbes property selling under the hammer for $993,000, above the reserve price. Part one of Lake Cargelligo, a bare block, sold for $210,000 followed by the house block portion of the property being hotly contended before being passed in for further negotiations. Parkes property “Blue Meadows” was slow to start with, bidding steady at $455,000 and then also passing in for further negotiations. With new interest generated, Ned is currently on a fresh inspection for Blue Meadows with persons present at the auctions.

ArtExpress 2015 19 September to 22 November

GALLERY MUSEUM CAFÉ COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE

76 WINGEWARRA STREET DUBBO NSW 2830 westernplainsculturalcentre.org 02 6801 4444

The Western Plains Cultural Centre (Dubbo) is once again the host for the extravaganza of raw talent, surprising sophistication and ebullient teenage angst that is ArtExpress 2015. Drawn from the best students from last year’s HSC course in Visual Arts, it encompasses the hopes, dreams, fears and concerns of today’s youth. The most surprising thing about any ArtExpress exhibition is that it continues to be surprising. It is all too easy to become jaded about the seriousness of the young, about their earnest idealism and strong belief that only they can save the world, but each time we get this exhibition their sheer exuberance, passion, creativity and inventiveness wins over even the most cynical of gallery goers. This year promises to be no different by being completely different. This exhibition was chosen by staff at the WPCC and features young artists from around the region and beyond. By Rosi Broom

Mezzanine Farewells Janine The structure itself has seen many lives over time, from a paint supply shop to a builder’s hardware shop and even a motor mechanic. Janine Whitfield purchased the Mezzanine building in partnership with the Betlands in 2004 after it had been closed and vacant for over four years. Janine quickly saw the potential for what was going to become the business of her dreams. It all started out as a small coffee shop with homewares, gift wares and a boutique tile shop until 3 years later Janine found herself the sole owner of the extraordinary building. Janine says she has really enjoyed her time at Mezzanine but it has been a lot of hard work, particularly at the beginning. Persevering, the shop space began to take shape after rubbing back walls and floors and making it habitable. The menu has always been quite simple, with different main dishes each day and an all-day breakfast, fantastic cold drinks and smoothies and of course the famous Fish River Roasters coffee. Each week the menu has changed and always modernises with the food trends. After living in Forbes all her life, Janine is surrounded by her family and adds “I couldn’t

have done this without them.” Janine said she is thankful to all her loyal customers and staff throughout the years and that Mezzanine is a place where she has made a lot of very good friends. She also wished the new owners Luke and Moana Duggan all the best when they take over at the end of September. Janine is off for a well-earned rest and in her words “my plan is not to have a plan”. From everyone at the Forbes Phoenix, good luck Janine and enjoy your time off. You will be missed! By Casey Evans and Rosi Broom

Dancing in the USA After 12 months of preparations, the time has arrived for 25 local dancers and 42 of their family and friends to make their way to America for 10 days. For some, this will not only be their first trip overseas, but their first time on an aeroplane. Kristen’s Dance School owner Kristen Woods offered the opportunity late last year to students who perform at Eisteddfods throughout the year and she has since been working hard with students, choreographing and rehearsing dances to perform at Disneyland and Universal Studios. The dancers have a busy schedule to follow with workshops and performances at Disneyland, Universal Studios and Hollywood. They will also go on a guided sightseeing tour of LA, visiting Beverley Hills, Hollywood and Rodeo Drive. Students and their families conducted several fundraising activities throughout the year to assist the dancers with the costs, receiving an overwhelming response. The tour is offered by Dance Around the World Tours, an established company with over 25 years experience in giving Choir, Dance and Band groups performance opportunities and workshop experiences in the USA, Asia, Europe and the South Pacific. Good luck and happy travels to all our aspiring dancers and their families. Enjoy your trip and we look forward to hearing about your accomplishments on your return! By Anita Morrison

Let Your Voice Be Heard The Forbes Aboriginal and Community Working Party came together as an initiative of David Acheson, a dedicated member of the Forbes and Indigenous communities. “We are trying to create a voice for Aboriginal people in Forbes,” says David, who is currently seeking out fresh members for FACWP. “You’ve got to be involved with your own town.” Although FACWP have been operating quite a few months now, David admits that there is not much structure at this stage. “We have up to 13 people come to our meetings, but it varies from month to month,” David says, stressing that FACWP is for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people alike and encourages people from all walks of life to work together in their community. David is responsible for most of the FACWP’s top jobs, including Secretary, Treasurer, Director and Cleaner, making it difficult for him to utilise resources in the best possible way. “I want to legitimise the committee,” he says. “We need structure to be accepted into the Three Rivers Regional Assembly. “As a group of volunteers we are working to establish a local identity and make a place for

Deputy Mayor continued from page 2 Members come from all around Australia, with issues such as animal welfare and potential outbreaks of foot and mouth disease being addressed, as well as promoting the auction system in saleyards. In fact, he is attending the annual conference in Sydney this week, where one of the guest speakers will be an Auctions Plus representative. Graeme has been married to Maureen for 40 years this week, and has two grown children, Andrew in Orange working as an accountant, in the firm of CKC, and daughter Sarah Hazel, who is part owner of the two pharmacies in Forbes. He also three grandchildren, all boys. Graeme is on a number of Committees for the Council, including the Saleyards Committee, Environmental, Plant & Machinery Committee and Chair of the Access Committee. He is proud of the fact that Forbes Shire Saleyards are the No 2 in Australia for sheep and in the top ten for cattle sales. Graeme estimates that he spends between 20-25 hours per week, sometimes more on Council business. Graeme said, “I really enjoy my role as Deputy Mayor.”

4th Annual Forbes Motor Show This October long weekend, the 5th Annual Forbes Motor Show will be held at South Circle and Grinsted Oval in what is becoming one of Forbes most anticipated events. It’s shaping up to be an impressive event with another remarkable line-up of antique machinery, an extensive range of bikes and a model car display. The kids will have plenty of things to do with a jumping castle, tattoos, face painting and other activities to keep them busy. “The committee has been working tirelessly to bring the Forbes Motor Show together and everyone is assured to have a fantastic day,”

said Secretary Jill Kay. “We have 33 entrant’s categories this year, including cars, bikes – with ladies categories, trucks, tractors, antique machinery, veteran, vintage and almost anything else you can think of.” Some of the categories include Best Paint, Best Ute, Best Classic Car, Best Restored, Best Tractor, Best Working Truck, Best Custom Bike, Best Street Rod, and many more. There are some great trophies and prizes up for grabs and anyone is encouraged to enter their pride and joy. “If you don’t wish to enter one of the cate-

gories, we welcome you to display your vehicle or equipment, and we will not be charging a fee for display only items,” Jill said. There will be a great selection of motorrelated stalls to browse through, as well as Brownie’s DJ music, food and drink stalls and a BBQ. The Forbes Motor Show promises to be a great family day for all. Don’t miss out on this great family day out, Sunday 4 October at South Circle and Grinsted Oval. Exit the Credit Roundabout One in two Australians are struggling with credit card debt sparking an Australian Senate inquiry to address some of the thorny questions many people are asking about credit cards. Research by ME Bank suggests the top financial goal among Australian households is to pay off debt as fast as possible, yet one in two credit card holders admit to being stuck in a “credit card roundabout”. Credit cards might be a useful cash management tool, but ideally you should be paying them off each month, rather than letting the debt accumulate. Getting out and staying out of trouble with credit cards calls for a rethink of household money management. A sensible starting point is drawing up a budget. It’s a tremendously useful tool to regain

control of money matters, yet around 57% of Australians don’t consistently set a budget and 40% fail to stick to the budget they have. Part of the problem is that we tend to use “guesstimates” for budget figures. The key to making a budget work is to track household expenses so that the numbers are realistic, then commit to staying within set spending limits. For some of us, the financial discipline of budgeting doesn’t come naturally. Setting up good processes like arranging automatic transfers is a foolproof way to ensure you are consistently setting some money aside for saving. With a pool of cash to fall back on, chances are you won’t need to resort to a credit card when bills arrive and the financial pendulum can start to swing in your favour.

Living and Lifestyle A New Artwork for Forbes Sculpture Trail There is a buzzing anticipation in Forbes as the announcement and unveiling of the new sculpture and the Sculpture Forbes 2015 Acquisition Prize draws near. Seven sculptures have been entered in this year’s acquisition prize, with artists coming from Melbourne, Sydney and around the region. There are also 11 sculptures entered in the open section of the competition. These will be displayed in shop windows throughout the town. Wayne Richards, Sculpture Forbes coordinator and Forbes Services Memorial Club President said the quality of work this year is impressive with entries continuing to grow each year. “It’s good we have a couple more than last year, so it’s slowly building up,” he said. “Some of them are really brilliant.” The Sculpture Forbes objective is to provide a platform for a sculptor to display their artistic endeavours as well as to bring tourists and locals into the main shopping centre of Forbes to view the sculptures. The Acquisition winner is awarded $20,000 with $4,000 going to the winner of the Open Division. The “Somewhere Down the Lachlan” sculpture trail was launched in 2014 by Forbes Services Memorial Club with the support of Forbes Shire Council and Forbes Art Society. The Forbes Arts Society, Forbes Shire Council and the Forbes Services Memorial Club are committed to the growth of the “Somewhere Down the Lachlan” and are passionate in their endeavour. Organisers are planning another relaxed, family-friendly festival atmosphere for this year’s launch and they hope people will get out there on the day to support it. “There was such a lovely ambience last year so we want to be like that again,” said co-organiser Rosie Johnston. “We’ll have music and food – a festival atmosphere.” The event will be on during the school holidays and it will be catered by Freshwater Dining, Cannibal Coffee and the Vandenberg Hotel. Everyone is invited to the official launch of the 2015 Sculpture Forbes competition on Thursday 1 October at the Albion “art park” from 6pm.

Rock Hard Australian rock legend Daryl Braithwaite will be performing for fans at the Forbes Inn on Friday 16 October and his famous voice still sounds as fantastic as ever. Best known as the lead vocalist of Australian rock band Sherbert, Daryl is now in his sixties but a lifetime addiction to surfing means he is as fit and strong as some men half his age. Daryl and his live band have been selling out pubs and clubs in every corner of the country for years, with several members of the group having performed with him for decades. The last member joined the band 14 years ago meaning the current line-up have been together as long as Sherbet was. ‘Forever the Tourist’ is in a sense Daryl’s personal gift to his most loyal fans and a thank you for their unrelenting support over time. Performing new emotion-filled, stateof-the-art songs, Daryl and his band will introduce a whole new generation of music lovers to one of the most famous and beloved voices in the history of Australian music. Tickets are $30. Fans of Australian music cannot afford to miss out on this memorable performance.

How long have you lived in Forbes? I’ve been here almost two years. Dubbo is where I grew up. What do you love about living in Forbes? I like that it’s a small and friendly community. What are your hobbies and passions? I make candles, I play bass and I really like going out to Nic’s parent’s place for a tinker. Where is your favourite place in the world? I moved to outback Queensland when I was 16 working on stations and I loved it. Anywhere in outback Queensland! If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? My husband Nic. We would get something and take it to the middle of nowhere and eat under the stars. What is your biggest fear? Anything bad happening to my kids. Who inspires you the most? My mum. She has always been amazing and I can’t fault her. What do you love most about your job? I love that it’s at home with my husband and kids.

Suffering From Dry Skin? Dry skin is dull in appearance, and may be rough, scaly and prone to form open cracks. The human skin begins to lose moisture from the moment we are born. Factors which contribute to dry skin are ageing, exposure to the sun and wind (both hot and cold winds), air-conditioning, soaps and strong detergents, hot spas, hot baths and hot showers. Dry skin may cause itching and be a precursor to skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema. Some medications may cause dry skin so check with our Pharmacist if you are concerned. Helpful advice for preventing dry skin: • When possible, decrease exposure to hot or cold drying winds, air conditioning, hot water, soap and strong detergents. Heated air in the home may need humidifying. • Radiators should not be directed at the skin. • Wool and synthetic materials may cause increased irritation. • Use a bath oil, either in the bath or under the shower. • Do not use soap. Use an emollient cleansing bar or liquid wash with a pH 6 to match the skin. Most soaps have a pH from 9 - 11, and can dry or irritate sensitive skin. • Use a hydrating lotion after the shower or bath, and a cream for less extensive or very dry areas. • Use a moisturising sunscreen everyday to help prevent the sun penetrating and drying the skin. The face and the back of the hands are particularly important as they are permanently exposed to the weather. • For dry lips protect them with a moisturising lip balm with a sunscreen for extra protection. For more information and advice, call in and see the Pharmacists or friendly team at Flannery’s Pharmacy or call on 6852 1111.

Dragons In The Water Have you seen the Lachlan Dragons paddling on Lake Forbes? Have you heard the beat of the drum and thought maybe you would like to give paddling a try? If the answer is yes, read on! Dragon boat racing is a Chinese tradition that has developed into a competitive water sport. With a 2000 year old history, its popularity is growing fast in Australia. It is a great exercise in team work as it requires 22 people to propel a dragon boat from start to finish. The Forbes Dragon Boat Club is currently seeking expressions of interest from people who would like to enter a team in the Forbes Dragon Boat Business House Competition which will be held early in the new year. As long as you’re able, you don’t need to be an experienced paddler because the Club will provide instruction to your team before you paddle, as well as providing you with all the equipment you’ll need. All you will need is between 5 and 10 people for a team and the club will make up the rest of the crew to fill the boat. If you want to

GOLF Good Field at Golf

The format on Saturday was a 4BBB Stableford Medley, sponsored by Cahill’s Footwear. There were 67 in the field, making up 34 pairings. The winners were the pairing of Craig Barrett and Peter Grayson. They did team well, scoring a number of 3-pointers and a 4-pointer to more than cover the three misses they had. Runners up on count back were the Woods, father and son, with 46 points. They showed brilliance with birdies on the 7th and 15th holes, and managed no less than 2-points on every hole. The ball sweep went to 43 points and was shared by those above and: 46 - A Callaghan/Chandler, 45 – Rhodes/Finn, Baker/F Smith, Newport/Drane 43- J Cripps/Taylor, Edols/Cartwright, Morris/Kirkman. Nearest the pins went to: 9th – B Chandler; 18th – R Taylor, but neither got their ‘2’. Across the whole field there were only two 2’s scored, and both on the 9th. They went to the Callaghan/Chandler and L Godden/ Carpenter pairings. Sunday’s Stableford Medley was well supported with a field of 27.
