All Smiles At “The Friendly Eisteddfod”

ARRIVING AS PARTICIPANTS, LEAVING AS FRIENDS... The Eugowra Public School choir participated at the eisteddfod on Tuesday and was one of the 15 schools to compete. Enjoying every minute of their visit to the event were (back L-R) Louise Hailstone and Sophie Gibson and (front L-R) Edna-May Skinner Barnes, Annabelle Peile, Emily Cox, Peyton McKenna and Chloe Gibson.

The Forbes Eisteddfod now in its 25th year is celebrating its diamond anniversary. The eisteddfod opened its doors last Friday at the Forbes Town Hall for the music, speech and drama, piano, vocal and schools components and will conclude on 22nd July at the Forbes High School after dance. For the duration of

the eisteddfod, organisers and volunteers will welcome more than 500 competitors and 15 schools, representing close to 60 towns. A reason for the Forbes Eisteddfod’s ongoing success is attributed to the committee’s ability to make all competitors and their families, locals and visitors alike, feel welcome. It therefore comes as no surprise that the Forbes Eisteddfod is affectionately known as “The Friendly Eisteddfod” and is a result of the positive and uplifting experience competitors leave with. This also being one of the reasons why participants return. Jen Kelly has been bringing her children to the Forbes Eisteddfod for the past 10 years. “It has been such fun again this year! The ladies are always so friendly and the children love catching up with old friends and making new ones. It’s such a great way to encourage confidence in performers and gain skills in so many different areas,” said Jen. It’s clear that the Forbes Eisteddfod committee have the secret to hosting a successful eisteddfod and that this event will continue to grow and be around for many more years to come. The cream of the crop will feature at the Grand Concert held on 28th July.

Last week’s Australian Local Government Association conference in Canberra was excellent! Congratulations to Forbes Shire Councillor, Phyllis Miller who served on the board of directors as one of two directors appointed to represent NSW. A major topic of the event was waste. While no Australia wide solution has been resolved to deal with the increased volumes of recyclable waste, we here at Forbes Council continue to work on the issue with our regional waste partners. Maureen and I had the great pleasure of attending the Rotary Ipomoea Changeover lunch on Saturday. For an organisation with such a small membership, I am absolutely in awe of what they achieve throughout the year. It is just wonderful! Last week, the General Manager and I, met with Northparkes Mines for an update on operations. It is always good to keep up to date with their progress. Thank you to Deputy Mayor, Councillor Jenny Webb who attended the rural community meetings at Bedgerabong and

Town Band Garage Sale: The Forbes Town Band will be holding a garage sale to raise funds in order to assist with the maintenance of instruments and uniform and music purchases. To be able to play at events such as Relay for Life, fundraising is required to pay for the band hall upkeep and instrument upgrades. The garage sale will be held inside the Town Band Hall in Rankin Street (near Bernardi’s) on Saturday, 30th June from 8am to 1pm. There will be a large variety to choose from such as bric-a-brac, furniture, plants, cooking, jams, vegetables, books and many more. Come along and support your town band. For further information contact 6851 5197. The Ripple Effect: Every day about eight people in Australia lose their life to suicide. Of that eight, six will be men. People in rural and remote areas are twice as likely to take their lives as those living in the cities. Di Gill from the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program says that it is extremely important to know the signs of depression so that we can help a friend or family member before they get to the stage that they

QUESTION of the week think that suicide is the only solution. ‘The Ripple Effect’ is one man’s story, of the impact of him attempting to take his life on those around him. ‘The Ripple Effect’ is showing at Forbes Services Club Cinema on Monday, 16th July. Look at What’s On for details to get your ticket.

For a good cause...The Forbes Town Band members performed at the Relay for Life event held during last month. Dressed up in a “cow” suit and playing the euphonium was Sue-Anne Nixon.

Camp Street Bridge replacement: Roads and Maritime Services are planning to replace the Camp Street Bridge over Lake Forbes to improve safety for road users and help reduce future maintenance costs. The community is invited to view and give feedback on the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the project which will be on display at council and the library until Friday, 27th July. The project team will be in Forbes on Saturday morning from 9am to 12pm outside Bernardi’s supermarket and again on Friday, 6th July from 10am to 2pm in Rankin Street next to Target, to speak with the community and answer any questions about the bridge replacement. For more information visit the project webpage on www.rms.work/forbesbridge.

How many years have you been to the Forbes Eisteddfod and why do you like supporting it?

Nikki Patten: We’ve been coming for about 10 years, watching nieces, nephews and children perform. It’s a fantastic local event held right here in Forbes and has a high standard.

Gail Smith: I’ve been involved with this eisteddfod for probably 15 years. I’ve supported it because I like avenues for children to be able to get up and perform and there aren’t many opportunities for them to do that. There are also lifelong friendships formed.

Mayor Graeme Miller was very pleased to be able to present a Forbes Shire Council Medal to Tom Drane last week for his achievements in motorcycle track racing at home and in the United States.

Megan Hodge: This is our first time to the Forbes Eisteddfod. We were very excited to be invited and have taken the opportunity to participate.

Australian Record Set for Lambs At CWLE Once again the Forbes Central West Livestock Exchange (CWLE) is proving to be a livestock selling centre of national significance with an Australian record set at this week’s sheep sale. A pen of prime second cross Dorset lambs was sold for $260 by vendors Mathew and Joanne Randall from Trundle. Agent Randall Grayson from Forbes Livestock (FLA) was the agent orchestrating the sale. General Manager of Forbes Shire, Steve Loane said that the Central West Livestock Exchange continues to be a major asset for the community of Forbes.

“Even in these drier conditions we are seeing some big yardings and quality livestock,” said Steve. “A big congratulations to the vendors and their agent.” The Central West Livestock Exchange is looking towards an expansion so that livestock movement through the facility can be made more efficient. This will greatly improve saleyard operations, lifting Forbes into the top five cattle selling centres in the state. The Central West Livestock Exchange has an annual combined throughput of 1.5 million sheep, cattle and pigs.

Free Child Restraint Checks

The annual free child restraint check day is Thursday, 5th July from 8am to 11am at Forbes Pre School Kindergarten. Forbes Shire Council are making sure that children are safe and secure on car journeys with free child restraint checks provided by RMS authorised child restraint fitters next week. Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said that the free child restraint checking day is important in ensuring the safe travel of young children. “There will be a parents/carers session from 8am to 9:30am, followed by an open session from 9:30am to 11am,” said Melanie. The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. Research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk in the event of a crash. “Most of the restraints we checked last year had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child, such as tightening straps, checking clips and replacing loose bolts,” said Melanie. Bookings are essential, phone 6861 2364 to secure your place. There will also be free barista coffee and a colouring-in competition with a $50 prize.

Make sure your child is safe with a free inspection by Authorised Restraint Fitters. You can have your child car seats, harnesses and booster seats checked for safety and fit.

Forbes Shire Council has collaborated with well-known local business, Cenwestours to promote Forbes in a way that is sure to be noticed. Mayor Graeme Miller said the eye-catching design is brand-lead and the partnership with Cenwestours increases awareness of Forbes’ new identity. “’Amazing’ Forbes will be promoted on highways and in major cities across New South Wales. In essence this is a travelling billboard promoting Forbes,” said Graeme. The ‘amazing’ brand represents Forbes, its rich agricultural sectors, its strong and connected community and our Shire’s key lifestyle attributes and rich natural resources. The strength of the ‘amazing’ brand will help to promote Forbes as a place to visit, live and invest. Owner of Cenwestours, Mel Sinclair said: “We are very proud to partner with Forbes Shire Council to help promote our town. We travel the length and breadth of the Central West and beyond and as far as Sydney.” “The bus is due to travel to Leeton for the McLeod’s Daughter’s reunion and will soon be heading to Sydney for a cruise ship transfer. The Wonder Of The Elvis Express It might be a ‘mystery train’ for the uninitiated, but thousands of fans would happily attest to why the Elvis Express has been awarded the top spot globally. The extremely popular train journey from Sydney to the Parkes Elvis Festival has been named the top one-of-a-kind rail journey across the globe. Escape.com.au has revealed the nine top train trips that offer travellers a unique experience with the Elvis Express journey listed as number one. “Though departing only once annually, the Elvis Express is undoubtedly among the most unique train rides in Australia,” according to the Escape.com.au website. “Transporting hundreds of Elvis fans each January to the Southern hemisphere’s biggest Elvis Presley festival, the train is a moving celebration of the life and career of rock ’n’ roll’s beloved King. “Once the doors close on the legendary TrainLink service passengers can expect non-stop performances, games and dressups over the seven hour, 365km ride. With a raft of hip-thrusting Elvis impersonators and bee-hived ‘Priscillas’ singing and shimmying their way to Parkes.” Parkes Elvis Festival Director Cathy Treasure said: “It’s wonderful to have the Elvis Express experience recognised as the most unique train ride. We work yearround with NSW TrainLink to ensure the service offers festival visitors a one-of-akind journey.” NSW TrainLink Acting Chief Operating Officer Candice Heine said: “We’re very proud to be able to support the Parkes Elvis Festival by offering a unique way to travel to the five-day extravaganza.” The Elvis Express will once again form part of the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival with tickets going on sale on the day of the festival program launch on 10th September.

A couple of reminders to players for their action: Firstly, get your name on the nomination sheet for the Wallace Cup Handicap Matchplay event. The nomination sheet is on the Pro Shop notice board. Secondly, set your diary to participate in the ‘Strategic Planning Workshop’, to be held at the Golfie on Thursday, 12th July and run by the Forbes Shire. It commences at 5:30pm with an expected 7pm finish. This is very important to plan for the future development of the club. Events coming up include the Men’s Foursomes Championships to be held on 14th and 15th July; the LVDGA Mixed 4B Championships held at Grenfell on Sunday, 22nd July; the LVDGA Mens 4BBB Championship at Forbes on 5th August and not forgetting the Sand Grass Greens Championships scheduled for 18th and 19th August. We record with sadness the passing of Ash Tucker’s mother last week. She passed away suddenly in her sleep. All club members express condolences to Ash and his family. By Short Putt

Croquet News Week ending 19th June It’s surprising how many stalwarts turn out for their game of croquet in the early mornings. We’ve been catering for up to 32 players each Tuesday and Saturday and everyone is having a lot of fun as well as getting in some gentle exercise. We love new comers to come along for a taste of the game or even just to watch. The winners of three games on Tuesday were John Cole, Bruce Field, Merv Langfield and Colleen Liebich. Welcome back to Evelyn Mahlo returning from a trip with her husband to Canada. Aussie Croquet Saturday, 23rd June A hearty welcome to Betty Berry and Sally Hurkett who joined our group on the first really frosty morning. Sally Hurkett won two games. She partnered with Veva MacCullagh in her first game and Veva again, had a win. Well done! There were only two players who won three games. They were Bruce Field and Robin Pols. Congratulations to you both. A big mention for our upcoming July birthdays, which will be celebrated on 3rd July at the Vandenberg. By Harley Stewart
