Racing Legend Visits Forbes Over 300 people went through the gates to meet Australian motor racing legend Allan Moffat on the weekend at Forbes Tyreright’s Grand Opening. Allan was described as a polite and gentlemanly fellow who enthusiastically signed posters and other memorabilia as well as posing for photos with excited fans. ROK FM were broadcasting live from the event which kept the crowd rolling in and $200 was donated by Tyreright Head Office to Forbes Dancing with the Stars. “From 9 to 1 they never stopped. There was a steady flow of people through the gate the whole time,” said Jamie Walsh from Tyreright after the event. One hundred footballs were given away, the BBQ sold out of sausages, and some GT Fords stopped in on the way to a wedding to
have Allan sign their cars. For Jamie, it was a little bit of a dream come true to rub shoulders with the cream of the cream in Australian racing. “I’d seen Allan and Peter Brock race around the tracks for years so it was great to shake hands with him and have him wish me well in my business,” Jamie said. “I couldn’t believe how many people wanted to come and meet him. He was just a gentleman to everyone.” Allan Moffat has had four wins in the Bathurst 500/1000, six wins in the Sandown 500, four wins in the Australian Touring Car Championship and was inducted into the V8 Supercar Hall of Fame in 1999. Congratulations to Andy Hardy who won $500 worth of GT Radial tyres. By Rosi Broom

MAYORAL NOTES On Tuesday I attended the National Police Remembrance Day service for the Lachlan Local Area Command. The service was held at St Joseph’s Catholic Church at Condobolin and it was very moving. The day is held for police and the community to remember those officers who have lost their lives in the course of their duties. It was well attended; however it is a shame that more community members from across the Lachlan Local Area Command weren’t present. Western NSW Health has announced the Forbes Hospital Public Open Day is on Saturday, October 10. This is a chance for the community to preview the new building before it opens. The tours will be held from 10am to 2pm, with bookings required. You still have time to book in for the tour today by calling 6850 7131. I encourage you all to go and have a look at the significant works that have been done as part of the $40.9 million redevelopment. Last week Councillors and I went to the 2015 Australian Livestock Market Association National Saleyard Expo. During the conference Deputy Mayor Graeme Miller was re-elected to the board and Councillor Brian Mattiske was also elected to the board. There were a diverse group of speakers at the expo and it was very productive. The association also announced two new initiatives - the Australia Model Code of Practice for Livestock Saleyards and Lairages and the Annual Animal Welfare in Saleyards and Lairages Award. It was very pleasing to hear the announcement by Attorney General George Brandis
that $15 million of the $100 million pledged to domestic violence will go towards 12 specialist units designed to help women and children access legal assistance and other services. Dubbo has been named as one of the 12 and now we are going to lobby for Binaal Billa Family Violence Prevention Legal Service to gain some of the funding as well to add to the service it provides. The Forbes Olympic Pool opens tomorrow and the forecast is sunny with a temperature of 30 degrees and 33 degrees on Sunday. What perfect weather to enjoy the first swim of the season! Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

Storm Season
The stormy season is fast approaching and NSW SES and NRMA Insurance are encouraging some pre-storm season training to get ready. During the past twelve months, volunteers in the Central West Region have responded to over 696 storm callouts. “Getting ready now will give you peace of mind later when the storms hit,” said NSW SES Central West Region Controller Craig Ronan. “It’s that simple.” “Every year we see the effects that storms have on our community,” said Jennifer Cobley, Manager of Partnerships and Programs at NRMA Insurance. “In a typical year almost half of all home claims in NSW result from storms. The storm events in April this year saw this increase to over 75% of all home claims.” “We encourage communities to get ready for storm season by taking simple steps to prepare their homes. A little work now can protect lives and help prevent damage to properties.” The storm season officially begins on 1 October and winds up at the end of April next year. While severe storms can occur at any time during the year, they are more prevalent during this period. Here are the SES tips for pre-storm season training: Know your risk and think about the area you live in and the types of disasters that could affect you. Make a plan for what you will do if a storm affects your area. Visit www.seshomeemergencyplan.com.au to make a plan. Get your home ready by cleaning your gutters, trimming your branches and securing any items in your backyard. Be aware and stay tuned for updates by listening to your local radio station, checking the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website or visiting the NSW SES Facebook page. Look out for each other and share information with your family, friends, neighbours and other people you know may need assistance.

QUESTION of the week What do you think about the recent leadership spill in the Liberal Party and the change in Prime Minister?
“I don’t think it was fair the way it was done. Let’s hope it has turned out for the better.” - Molly Neilson at The Sunshine Club.

Creative Collective of Forbes When a paint group of twenty years decided to get some like-minded people together and form the Forbes Arts Society, they didn’t know what the outcome would look like. It started out as a way to get artists around the area together in one place to share their creative passions and discuss issues that affect the local art world. A few years ago, art space was very limited in Forbes, and the Forbes Arts Society decided to act. Since securing the empty shop on the corner of Lachlan and Templar Streets as the Platypus Gallery two years ago, this not-forprofit group have held many successful exhibitions. Members’ works are exhibited in the Platypus Gallery and from time to time there are exhibitions from visiting artists, particularly during October. Artists from all over the Central West have exhibited their art in the Platypus Gallery, including towns like Grenfell, Orange, Parkes and of course Forbes, as well as artworks
from the Blue Mountains. A wide range of mediums are on display such as oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings, drawings, photography, pastel works, basket weaving and woodwork. The subjects and themes are relatable to country life with landscapes of regional areas, native birds, Forbes inspired pieces and miniatures. “It’s been very successful in the sense that a lot of tourists come through the middle of town and travellers call in to the gallery,” said Klara Ward, Secretary of the Forbes Arts Society. “It’s very important to bring other artists into the area.” “The Forbes Shire Council have played a big part in helping keep the gallery alive, as well as the generosity of Mrs Kennard who owns the building.” “The gallery brings the community together. They can use it as a hobby, but emerging artists and professional artists can use it too,” said Kathryn Lewis. By Rosi Broom

Governor of NSW to Visit Forbes
Sober for October
His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales has announced that he and his wife will visit both Forbes and Parkes in November. “Linda and I are very much looking forward to meeting the people of Forbes and Parkes over the three days,” Governor Hurley said. Governor Hurley has consistently demonstrated a keen interest in engaging with communities across New South Wales since becoming Governor in October 2014. Together with Mrs Hurley, they have visited Eden, Boggabilla, Balranald, Broken Hill and Bourke with countless towns and villages in between. This will be their first trip to Parkes and Forbes since taking up residence at Government House Sydney. “There is nothing more heartening than meeting the people of this great state and seeing first hand, and in their own backyard, not only their achievements and successes, but also the challenges that they face on a daily basis,” Governor Hurley said. “Heading into the geographical heart of New South Wales is certain to be a real highlight for us both.” Since being sworn into the position, Governor Hurley has continued to pursue a number of priority areas such as youth engagement, regional and rural growth, innovation, industry, trade and investment, inclusiveness and diver-
Three quarters of Australians believe the nation has a problem with excess drinking or alcohol abuse, according to a recent poll carried out by the Foundation for Alcohol Research & Education (FARE). The survey showed that almost 80% of people want to see more done to reduce the harm caused by alcohol and Life Education is urging Aussies everywhere to invest in education as part of the broader solution. The challenge is to lose the booze for 31 days as part of “Ocsober” and raise money to support Life Education, an Australian not-forprofit organisation that is synonymous with ‘Healthy Harold’ and its preventative health programs. “During Ocsober, raising just $109 will subsidise 10 children from a disadvantaged school so they can access the Life Education program for the first time,” Life Education NSW CEO Kellie Sloane said. There are plenty of great reasons to get involved in Ocsober this year! Improve your health and detox for summer, set a good example and raise money for our children, save some cash and help raise awareness around the impact of alcohol misuse in Australia. It’s not too late! Register as a team or individual now at www.ocsober.com.au to take the 31 day challenge and prove to yourself that you can go one month without alcohol!

Both the Governor and Mrs Hurley share a deep passion for schools, music and singing, while Mrs Hurley also enjoys interacting with aged care and women’s associations. The Governor will visit Forbes and Parkes over three days from 17 to 19 November. The final Vice Regal program will be released closer to the date.

My House My Home
Spring is one of my favourite seasons of the year. It is a time of excitement and rejuvenation as we recover from our period of cosy and contented winter hibernation. Everything seems fresh and new and filled with promise as we start making plans for the season ahead. Anything and everything seems possible and as we watch nature spring into life, we also gain inspiration from the outside world that is literally blossoming right in front

of our eyes. Winter is all about adding layers of warmth and texture to cocoon and comfort us throughout the cold winter’s days. Spring and summer are all about throwing open our windows and doors and letting the outside world in to allow us to embrace nature to its fullest. Spring naturally becomes the perfect time of the year to give your home a makeover. It is an opportunity not to be missed because as we passionately clean and polish we can also dispose of the clutter that we have continually collected over the years. And once we remove all this excess baggage from our homes we have space to decorate with new pieces that will give maximum impact without re crowding our new clutter-free existence. We should use this season of the year to begin the journey of making our house’s into homes and decorate them to reflect our lives and personalities. As I go about my daily life of styling people’s homes I have made a major observation on what effect this can have on people’s lives. After we have completed a styling project I love watching the joy that
my client has on their face when their previous ideas on how they would have liked their home to look have been brought to life. The impact that a few carefully placed items such as prints, rugs, cushions and decorator pieces have within a room’s overall presence is amazing. So, for this Spring I think the inspiration we should draw from the approaching season should be to make a start and begin making yourself a home that you will love to come home to. Start planning and designing your home yourself or ask for professional help if you need it because trust me, the results will be worth it. And as we create these sanctuaries for ourselves and our families to live within I think it will empower us to take on other projects in our lives as well. We will gain strength from our successes and the feeling of achievement will flow on throughout all our endeavours. So what are you waiting for? Spring into action today! By Karen Creith

My House My Home Pets Beware Snakes With the arrival of spring, snakes can catch animals by surprise as the warmer weather and drier conditions put an end to the snake’s winter hibernation. Australia’s peak veterinary body, the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) suggests animal owners should take precautions to prevent deadly encounters with snakes. “Snake bites tend to occur in the late afternoon or early evening, however when on the alert for snakes it is important for people to remain vigilant throughout the day,” said AVA President Dr Robert Johnson. “Snakes in sheds are probably looking for mice or rats, so keeping your shed clean can help to avoid this problem. They tend to be attracted to areas where there’s a good supply of rats and mice, wood piles and piles of rubbish.” “Outside, keep a close eye for snakes in bushy areas or near water. It’s best to try to keep horses, cattle and sheep away from bushy areas if possible.” “Dog owners should avoid snake-prone areas, particularly if they are walking their dog at the end of the day. Snakes can also venture into backyards, and over the spring and summer months even city dogs and cats can be at risk,” he said. Dr Johnson said it is important for animal owners to be aware of the signs of a snake bite as owners may not actually see their animal being bitten. The onset of signs are generally faster in dogs than in cats, and signs may vary. Signs include sudden weakness, followed by collapse, bleeding puncture wound, swelling in the bitten area, pain and discomfort, twitching, drooling and shaking, vomiting, loss of bladder and bowel control, dilated pupils and paralysis. “Horses, sheep and cattle are also susceptible to snake venom. Signs include muscle tremor, laboured breathing and dilated pupils followed by paralysis,” said Dr Johnson. “If you think your animal has been bitten, contact your vet immediately. The chances of recovery are much greater if treatment is delivered early. If you can’t get veterinary attention immediately, applying a pressure bandage over and around the bite site can help slow the venom spreading to the heart, and try to keep your pet as calm as possible.”

Ben Clifton How long have you lived in Forbes? I’ve been here for 5 and a half years. Raised in Manly, I came to Forbes to break away from the rush and get a bit of a change. What is your favourite thing about Forbes? The peace and quiet, the people are down to earth, it’s easy-going, not so crazy. Describe your dream holiday: I’d love to go to Japan because the culture, lifestyle and everything else are completely different. What do you do for fun? Relax at home. Do you have any passions or hobbies? I’d love to go travelling. What do you love about your job? I work at the Vandenberg Hotel so this is my social life. I get to talk, laugh and have a drink with people at work. Who would you love to have dinner with? Robin Williams. I loved everything he was in growing up. He always made me laugh. What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? More acceptance of different beliefs and cultures.

Good Weather Brings Success Saturday’s game was a 4-person Ambrose. In all 72 players took to the course in 19 groups. Not all groups had the full complement of players, but all were encouraged by the sponsor Alby Callaghan to play with lusty strokes and much gusto. The winners were the group of Ron Hurst, Shirley Redfern, Fleur Wells and Phil Wells, returning a score of 56.8 nett (rounding to the nearest decimal point, not the multiple decimal points that some tried to use). Three birdies (one on the notorious 7th hole) and three bogeys gave a level par score, but their handicap really helped. For the record, a group comprising some of the ‘battlecruisers’ of the membership enjoyed the conditions so much that they knocked 10 shots off par. Yes, their 62 scratch was made up of 10 birdies and no bogeys. A run of five birdies to finish the front-9 helped. And who were they? Daniel Bayley, Peter Dawson, Kim Herbert, Michael Wood are the battlecruisers, leaving the label of battleships to the Betland boys. The ball sweep went to 58.8 nett and was shared by the winners and: 57.6 – T Morgan, J Morgan, S French, A McDonald; 58.5 – P Dawson, D Bayley, K Herbert, M Wood; 58.7 – J Haley, R Taylor, B Monaghan, L Byrne; 58.8 – S Garvey, T Griffiths, L Godden, B Carpenter. Some very close results through all that. Nearest the pins went to: 9th – Randall Grayson; 18th – Peter Dawson. The 2’s story is interesting. There were 7 scored overall, but one group got three 2’s, missing out on the 1st hole. Guess who that group was! Good to see the Forbes Roving Golf Am-
bassador, namely ‘Digit’ McAuliffe, who came from Nelson Bay GC via Thailand, playing on the weekend. It is always good to see Digit playing here, as he maintains his Forbes ‘roots’ and supports us very well. Sunday’s Stableford Medley was also well supported with a field of 20. The scores matched the conditions – really good all round. The winner was Cameron McMillan with 40 points, showing the results of some very intensive practice sessions. Runner-up was Ron Morris with 39 points, who missed a good chance for a win courtesy of a ‘7’ on the 15th. The ball sweep went to 38 points and included: Cameron and Ron plus 38 – Neil McMillan, Peter Grayson and Ray Taylor. The NTP’s were: 9th – N McMillan, and 18th – B Monaghan, of whom Neil got his ‘2’. Other 2’s went to Briana Duncan (9th) and Neil Duncan (3rd). Through last week, the Vets had a ‘Week of Golf’ at Parkes, which comprised 54 holes at Parkes and a lay-day played at Forbes. Vets players came from as far afield as Hervey Bay (Qld), making up a field of 55 overall. A good contingent of Forbes players tried their best. Some basic results are: 54-holes: A-grade Scratch to G Brambly (Hervey Bay) 104. 54 holes: B-grade Scratch to Rod Luyt (Parkes) 120. 36-hole Stableford: A-grade to Barry Shine (Forbes) 69 points. 36-hole Stableford: B-grade to Rob Lea
Friday 2 October 2015 Page 15 (Parkes) 64 points. There were 18-hole events run on the Mon, Tue and Thu. The best Forbes effort came from Ted Morgan, with 39 points in Tuesday’s event. The Lay-day at Forbes, attended by 34 players, was a Medley event. Milton Cartwright, playing alongside two ladies, pulled a winning score of 41 points. In 3rd place was another Forbes player, Fleur Wells with 38 points. This week the Vets are playing a 12-hole event at Forbes. The usual 12:30 pm assembly for a 1:00 pm start. The weather promises to be extra nice so get out there and enjoy it. Some news items for you: All players are encouraged to wear an item of pink clothing on Saturday 10 October. This is to register support for Cancer Research and the good work that local support groups, like Can-Assist, provide to cancer sufferers. You can wear a pink hat, or pink socks, or a complete Pink ensemble, but please get into the spirit of it. And I am pleased to announce the result of the Mixed Foursomes event. You may remember that when this was played the Scratch result was a tie, and thus a play-off was needed. With four players all having different commitments it was hard to get them back together to ‘finish the job’. On Monday 28 Sep Andrew Dukes and Sally Crosby battled it out against Jeff Haley and Ethel Coombs, over 18 holes. At the end of the day the victors were Andrew and Sally with a Scratch score of 76. Unfortunately it was not a good day for Jeff and Ethel who had quite a few problems in their round. A couple of shots into the water on the 4th helped their score creep up to over 90. Thus, for the 2015 Mixed Foursomes, A Dukes/S Crosby are the Scratch winners, and J Haley/E Coombs are the Handicap winners. What a marathon. By Short Putt
