Wellness Hub Wins Health Award
The Forbes High School Wellness Hub has again proven its significance by being named winner in the Spotless ‘Keeping People Healthy’ category at the Western NSW Local Health District’s Living Quality & Safety Health and Innovation Awards held recently in Dubbo. The Spotless ‘Keeping People Healthy’ award is aimed at initiatives that promote healthy choices, prevent ill health and improves the overall health and wellbeing of the community. In 2016, Forbes High School observed an increase in complex, student psychosocial needs, impacting the mental health and wellbeing of their students. This project aimed to establish a Wellness Hub on site and increase access to health services. A multi-disciplinary team was established to create the Wellness
Hub, provide outreach services and evaluate progress. An impressive 207 occasions of service were recorded during the first 12 months of operation. An extract from the Summary of Award Winners said: “This is an excellent example of how a locally-led project can improve health outcomes for youth and families.” Staff and teams from across the Local Health District submitted entries leading up to the awards, with projects focussing on ways better health results can be achieved for patients through innovation. In total, 77 projects were received across 10 project award categories. Award finalists presented their projects at a symposium, allowing projects to be showcased to staff and managers from across the district so that innovative ideas could be shared.

COUNCIL COMMENTS The dry weather conditions we are experiencing at present is causing havoc for farmers and are a real concern to the livestock industry. An enormous amount of money is being spent on hay from down south to feed stock. Unfortunately, some farms have no choice but to destock and with this comes the loss of breeding stock. If you have the ear of our politicians, please ask them to put subsidies in place to assist in recovery when it eventually rains. The last thing farmers need is more loans. The development on the Bunnings site will commence shortly. Council has forwarded our trades list for the developer to use our local businesses. If you have not registered your details, please contact Forbes Shire Council on (02) 6850 2300. The Forbes flood study draft report has been received and Council will be working their way through that document over the next few weeks. On that note have a great week, God bless. Regards, Phyllis Miller OAM

Forming friendships... Year 5 students from Forbes Shire primary schools spent three fun filled days at Lake Burrendong Sport & Recreation Camp.
Inter-school friendships formed: Approximately 150 Year 5 students from Forbes Shire primary schools, spent three days at Lake Burrendong Sport & Recreation Camp last week. The annual excursion allows students from the four local primary schools to learn and grow together over three days, and is proudly subsidised by Forbes Shire Council. It is a way for these students to make connections before they head to high school. Once at Lake Burrendong, the students participated in a variety of fun and challenging activities. Forbes Shire Council has been supporting this excursion for several years. Another chance to have your say: After our recent discussions with the community around Council’s levels of service we are now looking for 20 enthusiastic shire residents to take part in a one day workshop to fine-tune our overarching Community Strategic Plan. If you are a big thinker with lots of ideas for our amazing shire then this is the opportunity for you. We are looking for a panel that reflects the diversity of Forbes and for people who will have a say. Are you from the farming sector, a volunteer, a sportsperson, have a business, are into the arts, represent the indigenous community, or are you an active young person or re-

Volunteer/s needed for Parkrun startup: We would love to start a Parkrun in Forbes/Parkes but need a passionate community member or small team to make it happen. There is a lot of support and help offered from the head office, but the drive must come locally. If anyone is interested in leading the project please contact eventsupportau@parkrun.com. Parkrun is a simple concept: turn up and walk, jog or run 5km or if you’re a junior then 2km. It doesn’t matter how fast you go. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. What matters is taking part. Parkrun is all about inclusiveness and wellbeing.

Care For Farmers – Donate Small
As the current winter continues to be a mostly sunny one, the drought tends to pop up in many conversations. One woman has decided it is not good enough to just talk about it, but to do something for the farmers. “We can all help to give the farmers a hand up,” said Karen White. She started last Thursday asking her friends on Facebook to put together a care package and immediately had a wonderful response. “Getting animal feed is priority for the farmers at the moment, which means there might not be much left for other daily necessities.” Karen’s idea is to put together packages
with anything from toothpaste to teabags, something for the kids or something to help mum and dad wind down. “A bottle of wine and a bag of nuts could give them some time to relax and not think about the drought for a while.” Karen said the idea was not to spend a fortune and as little as $4 items would make a difference. She also suggested bags of dog biscuits to help keep the working dogs fed. Karen will be collecting donations for the next two weeks and a friend will help with the distribution. Donations can be dropped off at 50 Hilda Street in Forbes.

OUR Bloke Martin Cahill How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes my whole life. I like the fact that I can walk around town and say hello and have a friendly conversation with everyone. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I own and operate Cahill’s Footwear and have done so for the past 33 years along with my father Harry. I am very lucky to have great staff and enjoy being able to serve, meet and greet many friendly people each day. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? I enjoy spending time with my partner Rachel and our children and grandchildren. Also, I’m told I am the worst golfer in Forbes but that is where you will find me every Saturday after work with my mates and a few beers. What are you really good at? Tying up shoelaces.

Baker’s Cyst A baker’s cyst, also known as a popliteal cyst, is a swelling at the back of the knee joint. Baker’s cysts are fairly common and are associated with chronic swelling within the knee joint. They occur, most frequently, secondary to degenerative disease within the knee joint such as osteoarthritis or meniscal degeneration. The main sign that a baker’s cyst is present will be a bulge and a feeling of tightness behind the knee. This may be tender to touch with pain and stiffness often worsening as the knee is straightened after activity or when squatting or kneeling. Just as a door hinge requires oil to reduce friction and allow smooth movement, similarly, the cartilage and tendons in the knee joint rely on a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid. Synovial fluid circulates around the knee joint and in and out of various fluid sacs called bursae that communicate with the knee joint. Sometimes when a structure within the knee joint is damaged or inflamed too much fluid is produced. If this fluid gets trapped in the popliteal bursae it is called a baker’s cyst. If a baker’s cyst is suspected the whole knee joint should be assessed thoroughly as treatment involves treatment of the underlying cause. Once the cause has been addressed the swelling generally settles down. Sometimes the bursae might be drained or surgically removed but if the underlying cause of the swelling is not corrected the swelling will just return. Strengthening exercises for the lower limb can help to improve joint biomechanics and to decrease the load on the knee. “For the fitness of you,” Linda Reilly
