Preparing Students As Leaders Of The Future

Each term students in Years 3 to 6 participate in a leadership day held at Forbes Public School. This is an innovative and interactive day where they are equipped, challenged and inspired with skills that will enable them to have success in a number of dynamic areas of personal development. This term the leadership day was held on Thursday, 2nd August and the school was privileged to feature David Acheson as the guest speaker who started off the day’s proceedings. David is an aboriginal elder involved in the local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG). This was a wonderful opportunity for students to gain insight about aboriginal leadership from a local identity. Also on the same day, students who were candidates for the upcoming Junior AECG, delivered

speeches to the audience as part of a leadership election process. “It was fantastic to see the children speak with confidence and clarity to such a large group of individuals,” said Forbes Public School Principal, Dafydd Thomas. After the formal address in the hall, students eagerly moved on to a great part of the day where they dispersed into constructive workshop groups. These groups had specific focuses to enhance their personal skills in target areas. They gained insight into developing public speaking skills, extending social skills to have success in various settings, resilience training, team building and goal setting. At the end of the day, students were treated to a warm sausage sizzle on a freezing cold day.

THUMBS... COUNCIL COMMENTS CR JENNY WEBB Drought is at the forefront of everyone’s mind at the moment. When farmers do it tough, the rural towns suffer as well. You have to be an optimist living on the land. Many farmers have already made the decision to destock, keeping only a nucleus of sheep or cattle breeders, and feeding those remaining stock through the drought till it rains. The cost of keeping them alive comes at a financial cost and the commitment shown by our livestock stewards is something to behold. Many, like my husband, have been feeding stock daily for eight months now. Saleyards have also been extremely busy of late, with large volumes of stock numbers sold and record lamb prices seen. Last financial year the saleyards sold 74,000 cattle and 1,600,000 sheep at an income of over $400 million. Last month alone 9,000 head of cattle and 200,000 sheep and lambs bringing $50 million worth of stock through the yards. Our rural workforce, farm workers, agents, truckies and Forbes Shire Council should all be encour-

Stopped emergency vehicles: From 1st September 2018, a new road rule will require motorists to slow down to 40km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle displaying blue or red flashing lights. The new rule also requires motorists to give way to any person on foot in the immediate area of the emergency vehicle. The rule applies to vehicles travelling in both directions, unless the road is divided by a median strip. Motorists who do not comply with the rule will face a $448 fine and three demerit points. Texting while driving: Demerit points for illegal phone use while driving will increase from four to five from September 2018. Drivers are not allowed to use their mobiles to text, email, use social media, take photos or video call while driving. Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey said this will help change the way drivers act on our roads. “We have already introduced legislation to enable camerabased technology so it can be used to enforce mobile phone offences in the future, a world first,” said Melinda.

Under new road safety measures, NSW drivers will face the toughest demerit point penalty in Australia for illegal phone use while driving.

Farmers across NSW are set to receive government grants towards building cattle underpasses, to ensure livestock can safely move between paddocks separated by a state road. The NSW Government has committed up to $3 million in grants for farmers, to build cattle underpasses and install warning signs and flashing lights, to help ensure safety for producers and motorists. Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair said the investment delivers on a commitment between the NSW Liberals and Nationals as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NSW Farmers’ Association to develop an underpass scheme to improve farm and road safety. “Underpasses will remove the need for cattle to cross country roads, improving safety for livestock owners, their employees and motorists,” said Niall. “This initiative, funded by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI), would be particularly beneficial to dairy producers who need to move stock across roads to milking facilities every day. “In the last financial year, NSW milk production was worth $559 million to the state’s economy, reflecting the strength and resilience of the industry which is still managing the challenges of low prices for dairy products as well as facing the current drought conditions.” Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey said the NSW Government will offer grants for 50 percent of the cost of installing an underpass, up to $70,000.

“Farmers can also access optional grants of up to $10,000 to help cover the cost of installing warning signs and flashing lights,” said Melinda. Member for Lismore, Thomas George said along with the productivity boost for producers, the scheme would reduce hazards for motorists. “Underpasses will reduce the risk of road collisions, traffic delays and road surface damage,” said Thomas. “Each underpass will be built primarily for the movement of livestock with permission from Roads and Maritime Services.” CEO of NSW Farmers, Matt Brand said the association has advocated for an underpass scheme for NSW for a number of years and is very pleased to see this come to fruition. “We have seen a similar successful scheme run in Victoria and are delighted that NSW has followed suit,” said Matt. “The underpass scheme acknowledges the importance of improved farm productivity, increased animal welfare and better safety for motorists. “We encourage all cattle farmers to utilise this scheme to help improve the productivity of their business and animal welfare.” Applications for grants close on 31st October 2018 and will be considered in the order in which they are received. Every application received will be assessed against eligibility criteria listed in the Cattle Underpass Scheme guidelines. More information about eligibility and application requirements is available from https://www.dpi. nsw.gov.au/cups.

Forbes To Commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day Community members are invited to attend Vietnam Veterans Day, which will be held at the Cenotaph in Victoria Park on Friday, 18th August commencing at 11:00am. The commemorations for the Battle of Long Tan this year will honour all Australians who served their country during the Vietnam War. Some 60,000 Australians served their country in the Vietnam Conflict from 1962 until 1975. Australian suffered 521 dead and more than 3,000 wounded during this conflict and many more veterans suffered, and continue to suffer, as a result of their service.

It was a war, though undeclared, that Australians did not seek, but they were young, proud, determined and confident. They had wonderful qualities and values taught to them by a previous generation who had also seen war. As young men and women, they lived in a time when draft-dodging was a dirty word and the domino theory was a constant theme. Service of country was never questioned. Australians were involved in many engagements, including Operation Crimp in January 1966, the Battle of Long Tan 18th August 1966 (and, hence, the date for this day of Remembrance), 1968; heavy fight-

ing around Bien Hoa and Long Binh during Operation Coburg at the time of the Tet Offensive, the battles for Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral, actions during Operation Goodwood around Hat Dich in 1968-69, the battle of Binh Ba in 1969 and in 1971 the Battle of Long Khanh. We must never forget the price that our Vietnam veterans paid for their service. The bravery, tenacity and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers in the Battle of Long Tan, and the support provided to them by the RAAF and by artillerymen from Australia, New Zealand and the United States are remembered as one of the Vietnam War’s defining moments.

Rabobank Offers Farm Management Deposit Offsets Minister for Agriculture, David Littleproud has congratulated Rabobank for offering a Farm Management Deposit (FMD) offset to their customers. This means farmers who bank with Rabobank, which has the second biggest slice of the farm lending market after NAB, will now be able to use the money in their FMD to offset interest on their loans. Farmers can put pre-tax income into the FMD during good years and pull it out during bad years, choosing to pay tax on it then. Farmers are allowed to have up to $800,000 in an FMD. This means they could potentially save up to $24,000 a year

if their bank offers an FMD offset (3 percent interest multiplied by $800,000). David pushed the issue of FMD offsets during his drought round table in July. NAB and CBA have since announced they’ll give farmers FMD offsets. Rabobank had initially ruled out the idea of offering farmers an FMD offset product but last weekend announced it would give farmers that option. Only Westpac and ANZ have failed to come to the party. “I congratulate Rabobank for doing the right thing,” said David. “I’m glad the bank was big enough to change their mind. Australia’s farmers will

be better off for it.” “Rabobank is a foreign-owned bank showing the way for Westpac and ANZ. I hope Westpac and ANZ show they care for Australian farmers very soon, because their donations to drought causes are too small to be calculated as a percentage of their multi-billion dollar profit. What would really make a difference to our farmers is an FMD offset product.” Australian farmers have more than $6 billion in FMD’s, so if all banks offer FMD offsets on farm loans, this could save farmers $240 million a year.

Chamber Assesses Drought Impacts On Business With 99 percent of NSW suffering extended drought conditions, the NSW Business Chamber is examining the flow on effects to regional communities and businesses. Whilst it has been pleasing to see both federal and state government responding with farm aid packages, the extended drought has much broader implications. “The Western NSW Business Chamber believes there is clear evidence the impacts of drought flow on significantly to regional businesses that support and make up the fabric of our rural and regional communities. We know many of our members are already struggling with increasing cost

pressures in areas such as fuel, gas and electricity prices, then on top of that comes the impact of the drought resulting in falling sales, stifled business growth and employment in the region,” said Vicki Seccombe, Regional Manager, Western NSW Business Chamber. In order to better understand the broader situation, the Chamber recently introduced a survey, which seeks to understand the impacts of drought on businesses that support our regional and rural communities. The survey can be found on the following link and is open until Thursday, 16th August.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/nswbcdroughtsurvey “We urge all regional business owners and operators to complete the survey. In times like this, we need to come together to support all our businesses, both farming and non-farming business and look for solutions that help our communities to remain strong and viable during this time.” “The NSW Business Chamber will ensure our state and federal governments have a clear picture of the impact across our regional communities, and can implement strategies to address these issues with our support,” said Vicki.

dental h e a lt h w e e k Watch Your Mouth This Dental Health Week This year during Dental Health Week (6 to 12 August), the Australian Dental Association (ADA) is reminding everyone to #WatchYourMouth, in the light of the latest national survey conducted by the association that showed Australians are not prioritising their oral health. It follows the launch earlier this year by the ADA of Australia’s Oral Health Tracker which was developed in response to data showing that just over 52 percent of Australians are only brushing once a day instead of the recommended twice daily and nearly two in five (38 percent) never floss or clean in between their teeth. Australians also need more regular dental check-ups, with 69 percent only going to the dentist when they have a problem. This is especially concerning given the fact that tooth decay is Australia’s most common disease, with one in five adults having untreated tooth decay and one in five also have gum disease, with oral cancer rates also on the rise. To help combat these figures, Dental Health Week 2018 is stressing these four key tips for good oral health: • Brush twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste • Clean in between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes • Eat a healthy diet, limit sugary foods and drinks • Visit your dentist regularly ADA President, Dr Hugo Sachs said Dental Health Week is an opportunity for people to take a look and learn more about why a healthy mouth is so important. “Good oral health is vital to good overall health, so watching your mouth will help maintain your general wellbeing. Watching your mouth means brushing and flossing, eating a healthy diet, lowering our sugar and alcohol intake, stopping smoking and seeing your dentist for regular check-ups. These good habits will greatly reduce the risk of oral disease.” Ask your dentist about the Child Dental Benefits Schedule to access benefits for basic dental services (capped over two years). The benefits include check-ups, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions. Your child may be eligible if they are aged 2 to 17; they are eligible for Medicare, and you or your child are getting Family Tax Benefit Part A or certain other government payments.

Forbes Furniture Restorers have moved into the shed and are people with a passion for furniture restoration. From upholstery to French polishing, they have master craftsmen to complete any restoration job. Their business was established in Gilgandra in 1980, where after they purchased the upholstery business from Harry Waddington in November 1989 and moved it into the Aussie shed. Paul and Lyndee have always been thankful to the people of Gilgandra, their many customers and Paul’s parents, Vilma and Wally, for all their support during the start-up years. In 1991 they relocated to Mudgee and after

Croquet News And Results Report Croquet week ending 4th August

9th – Brian Everest; 18th – G Newport. We welcomed a group of golfers from St George’s Basin. Some of them joined the comp while others played socially but they all enjoyed themselves. Play on Sunday was the LVDGA Mens Keno 4BBB, with 46 players covering representation from Forbes, Parkes, Grenfell and West Wyalong clubs. There was no Stableford Medley. The winners of the Handicap event and heading to the State final at Bonville were the pairing of Richard Nixon and Niel Duncan. They finished with +8. Andrew Dukes and Michael Spice were runners-up on +7, ahead of Ralph Baker and Steve Grallelis on count back. The Scratch event was dominated by Parkes players with Mitch McGlashan and Zac Kelly coming first on +4 and Myles and Blake Smith runners-up on -2.

A smaller turn out than usual for our golf croquet but the standard of play was excellent. There were six winners of three games namely Bruce Field, Jeff Liebich, Colleen Liebich, Joan Littlejohn, Bob Murray and Dorelle Scott. We were lucky to have a visitor from West Australia. Lyn McFarlane really showed us what good croquet is all about! She wiped the floor with all her opposition and won all three of her games. Saturday Aussie Croquet saw a good turnout of 27 players. Visitors again were the surprise with John Rogers, Annie Bradley and Rob Bradley all winning games. Rob Bradley won three games, a big effort for a player from Sydney who has only played three or four games in his life. Clean sweeps were John Cole, Bob Murray, Kevin Rubie, Dorelle Scott, Harley Stewart, Tony Thompson, Alec Todd, Lorraine Todd and Rob Bradley. A big cheer to visitor Annie Bradley for winning her first game ever!
