a small handful in Australia and has been nominated for yet another award. This time Kacie has been named as a finalist in the Austin Asche Apprentice of the Year Award. Organised by the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation, this is the Northern Territory’s premier training awards. Last year Kacie received the Advanced Training International Overall Trade Apprentice prize at the School of Trades presentation in Darwin. The only female apprentice in her trade, Kacie was described as “an outstanding choice, having excelled academically and as a practitioner of her craft,” by Roy Brandner, Head of School of Trades at Charles Darwin University. Turn back the clock, Kacie started working at Jakes Steel & Welding in Darwin as a labourer nearly four years ago and was offered an apprenticeship within two months. Since then, Kacie has been going from strength to strength, having just completed a Certificate III in engineering and heavy fabrication. “Lots of women are becoming tradies nowadays. I say to them, ‘Give it a go!’ It may be tough at times but if you’re determined and dedicated, you’ll get there and show everyone what you can achieve!” said Kacie. Winners of the Northern Territory Training Awards will be announced at a dinner at the Darwin Convention Centre on Saturday, 22nd September.

LETTER To The Editor MAYORAL NOTES On Thursday, Outback and Country NSW and Destination NSW (the regional Destination NSW Board) along with notable tourist operators in town such as Grazing Down the Lachlan, Van Fest, Sculpture Trail, Carrawobity and others met to share their various tourist events and gain insight into how best to promote our area. On Friday I will be attending the Mock Crash Demonstration in Parkes. This program is in its tenth year and it is amazing how well it brings awareness to young people. I recommend all adults to take a look at the mock crash demonstration next time. This week’s Council meeting heard discussions on applying Level 1 water restrictions with 100 percent of NSW been declared in drought. It was great to see the Men’s Shed roof being erected this week. I congratulate the committee and volunteers who have worked together on getting this wonderful project up off the ground. Last Saturday, I presented the Forbes u8’s soccer team with awards for winning

If it wasn't for Catherine at Life Pharmacy Forbes, with her wonderful medical knowledge and dedication to her job, I may not be here today. I owe her my life! Thank you ever so much for saving me from a silent killer that eventually would have proven deadly. So glad I listened to your advice. Lesson learnt that if you’re not sure if something’s right and you are feeling unwell, get it checked before it’s too late - even if it's just at your local pharmacist. Warm Regards, Helen Field

You’re Never Too Young To Have A Will Writing a Will is often seen as something that can be done in the future or not being necessary. However NSW Trustee & Guardian is encouraging everyone over the age of 18 to consider it now. Even if you don’t think you have much, a Will is still important as you may have more assets than you realise. For anyone that has ever worked full or part time, you may have a superannuation policy that would be paid out if you passed away. Some super funds also include life insurance policies so these can be sizeable assets. If you own property, a bike or car you may already have thought about what you would like to happen to these items if you pass away. You may also like to include tools, jewellery, furniture or tech gadget purchases in your Will. For those in relationships or with family and friends to think about, a Will can also help ensure your wishes are followed and the things you care about are looked after. Perhaps there is a charity or cause that you are passionate about and would like to acknowledge them in your Will. NSW Trustee & Guardian is the state’s largest Will maker and can help get you started if you haven’t had a Will created before. They’ve got the experience meaning there’s no Will too large or too small for them to handle. They will be holding a Plan Ahead Day at Forbes Court House on Wednesday 29 August, where you can make or update your Will or Power of Attorney documents. To make an appointment, call 1300 723 037 or start online: tag.nsw. gov.au/planahead *Fees may apply. See website for details.

Making Informed Livestock Decisions Conditions across the Central West continue to deteriorate with below average rainfall forecast for the next three months. With many producers now hand feeding their remaining livestock, Central West Local Land Services staff are urging them to ensure they are constantly looking at the current and future cost of inputs to ensure they can make informed decisions around livestock management. “Things are tight for producers. It’s important that they have a clear understanding of the cost of feeding stock so they can make an informed decision about if or when to sell,” said Central West Local Land Services Condobolin based district vet, Hanna Thomas. To support landholders in the decision making process, Central West Local Land Services have partnered with RaynerAg and Landcare to roll out a series of workshops. The workshops will allow producers to look at planning a cash flow budget to read-
just strategies based on feeding or selling for the remainder of 2018, resource budget of feed and water based on requirements for stock and resetting key trigger points for livestock. “Producers are under pressure at the moment and many are time poor due to their feeding schedule. These workshops are a great opportunity for them to stop and evaluate the financial impacts of feeding livestock and help them allocate limited resources effectively,” said Mel Kiel, Project Officer with Little River Landcare. The free workshops will be held across the region throughout August. The Forbes workshop will take place on Tuesday, 21st August at the Forbes Inn Hotel from 12pm to 4pm. To attend, please contact Mel on 6846 4569 or projects@littleriverlandcare. com.au. To find out more about these workshops or other Central West Local Land Services events, visit centralwestlls.nsw.gov.au
Wellness Wise How To Rediscover Your Fitness Mojo Being active doesn’t just make you feel good, it is good for you. The list of benefits is long and sweeping as almost on a daily basis, scientists identify new health perks of regular physical activity. To make exercise part of your routine you need to prioritise and commit. Start small: Think about your current fitness level and start with something achievable, but slightly challenging. Aim to be active for 20 to 30 minutes per day. If you want to do more, gradually increase the duration.
Forbes Bowen Therapy & Wellness 19 Bridge Street Forbes
Appointments are required by phoning Bowen Technician Greg Howell 0427 592 771
Make it a non-negotiable: Rather than viewing exercise as a ‘nice to have’, treat it like any other element of your daily routine. Like having a shower, eating breakfast and going to work – you don’t really think about it, you just do it. Set a goal: Having an exercise goal to work towards, such as a fun run, gives your training focus. Plus, you’ll enjoy a real buzz crossing the finish line of an event you’ve dedicated time working towards. Find a buddy: Having a friend to meet regularly and train alongside keeps you accountable, provides a social aspect to your activity and means you can motivate and support each other on tougher days. It’s too cold: There’s no such thing as bad weather if you’re prepared for it. Cooler weather actually provides the best conditions for exercise. You only get cold if you’re standing still. It’s too hot: In really hot conditions think about taking your activity indoors, or choose to get your exercise via a refreshing swim. By Claire Burke

FLANNERY’S Pharmacy
Are Your Bones Healthy?
Flannery’s Pharmacy will be hosting a Bone Density Clinic in-store on Wednesday, 29th August. Your bones are living tissues that are both flexible and strong. They act to support and move your body, protect your organs, create white and red blood cells and to store essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus. Throughout your life your bones are always changing and remodelling. You can think of it like a bank account, into which you make deposits and withdrawals. “Osteoporosis occurs when too little bone is formed, too much bone is lost, or a combination of both occurs,” said Tracey Edwards, Pharmacist at Flannery’s Pharmacy. “When this happens your bones become more brittle and can fracture more easily,” said Tracey. “Ideally, you will have made more ‘deposits’ than ‘withdrawals’ during your early years to create the strongest bones possible”. Risk factors for osteoporosis include increasing age, being female (especially post menopausal), a family history of osteoporosis and/or a history of fractures as an adult. Lifestyle risk factors include low dietary calcium intake, low vitamin D intake, low levels of physical activity, excessive alcohol intake, smoking and low or excessive body weight. “The heel ultrasound test offered by the pharmacy is a screening test that gives a snapshot of your bone health,” said Tracey. “Screening tests alone cannot accurately diagnose osteoporosis but they can be used in conjunction with your personal risk factors so that you and your GP can decide which course of action is best for you”. If you would like an appointment for the Bone Density Clinic, please call instore or phone Flannery’s Pharmacy on 6852 1111. Cost is $20 and bookings are essential.

Free Workshop Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers Parents and supervisors of local learner drivers are encouraged to attend a free workshop which will be held at Forbes High School on Tuesday, 21st August. The free two hour workshop, Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers, will offer parents and supervisors hands-on advice on how to provide the most effective driving practice for learner drivers. Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said the workshops offer practical advice to parents and supervisors on how to help learner drivers become safer drivers. “Parents and supervisors of learner drivers have a crucial role to play in making our roads safer. That is why Forbes Shire Council have teamed up with Roads and Maritime Services to hold these free two hour workshops. “The workshop covers the changes to the licensing system that came into effect last November, how to use the Learner Driver Logbook including the use of digital logbooks, licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, the benefits of on-road driving sessions, tips on supervising a learner driver and more. “Parents and supervisors who have at-
tended this workshop in the past have found that it boosted their confidence, helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed them to share their experiences with other parents and supervisors,” said Melanie. The Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshop will be held at Forbes High School on Tuesday, 21st August commencing at 6pm. Light refreshments will be available during the workshop. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Melanie on (02) 6861 2364. For further information please call Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor on (02) 6861 2364.
The informative two hour workshop for parents and supervisors has proven to be very beneficial in the past.

Freight Changes To Support Farmers The NSW Government’s new improved access for heavy vehicles carrying supplies and stock to drought-affected areas was welcomed by Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless. The new NSW Class 3 Drought Assistance Dimension Exemption Notice, which came into effect this week, will allow more hay to be transported per truckload, reducing costs for farmers. Rick said with 100 percent of NSW in drought there has been a greater demand to transport hay. “We know freight is a huge cost so the more hay we can get on one load the cheaper it is for our farmers.” “The NSW Liberals and Nationals have committed more than $1 billion in drought assistance to date. This is another step designed to help assist farmers at this difficult time,” said Rick. Drought applications are being prioritised through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) portal, by including the word DROUGHT in the reference section of the application. For any questions transport operators or farmers may have contact the dedicated hotline 1800 952 292 or visit www.rms.nsw. gov.au/drought-freight.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes all my life, which is over 50 years. I love the easy going lifestyle and the friendly people. Where do you work and what do you enjoy about your work? I work at St. George Bank in Rankin Street. I have been there for over 14 years and really enjoy the day to day interaction with our customers and also working with a wonderful team. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? On weekends I just love to unwind by poking around home, doing odd jobs, spending time with my family, reading, walking or watching a good movie, cricket or football. What are you really good at? I’m one of those ‘jack of all trades, master of none’ types, but some people think I play the guitar fairly well. If you could have a super power, what would it be? I’d love to be able to eat and drink what I want without putting on weight. What is your pet hate? Technology. Mobile phones have taken over our lives. Tell us about your best holiday ever. Anywhere coastal but Coolangatta is a particular favourite of ours.

Electronic Conveyancing Transfers Guarantee
There has lately been some national media publicity about lost monies in electronic conveyancing (also known as PEXA). Money went missing due to fraud in the new electronic conveyancing settlements system. PEXA is owned by the major banks and runs the system. They have now (after much adverse publicity) agreed to provide a PEXA Residential Seller Guarantee (guarantee) to all vendors of land (sellers) as and from 29 June this year (2018) to reimburse for loss up to a limit. The key points are: 1. The seller has the option to make a claim under the guarantee, rather than seeking to recover the loss by alternative means; 2. The guarantee applies to sellers in respect of the settlement of residential property where the seller’s funds are misdirected after the seller’s legal practitioner has entered the correct bank account details into the PEXA platform; 3. There is a $2 million cap on PEXA’s liability per settlement; 4. You must be represented by a lawyer or conveyancer that is registered with PEXA, such as Matthews Williams Solicitors; and 5. The seller through his or her lawyer or conveyancer makes a claim within three business days of the transaction. An important point with this is that the guarantee does not apply to commercial properties. Sellers of residential property should check their bank account next day to make sure funds went into the bank account so that they can make a claim. The Forbes Dragon Boat club kick off with a new season this Sunday. Join in the fun now!
Time To Come And Try Dragon Boat Paddling
The Forbes Dragon Boat club begin their new season this Sunday, 19th August at 8:15am on Lake Forbes. Dragon Boat paddling is a great way to meet new people and have fun, while enjoying our beautiful lake. Anyone wanting to come and have a go at paddling is welcome to join in. Bring a friend or come on your own, you will be very welcome. Whether it’s just a recreational paddle, simple fitness or you want to compete in regattas during the season, join us for a fun morning on Sunday or any time during the season. We meet at the Dragon Boat shed behind the Forbes Sport and Recreation Club in Lachlan Street on Sunday mornings at 8:15am for a warm up, before hitting the water at 8:30am and finishing at 9:30am. During daylight saving, we also paddle on Thurs-
day evenings from 6pm till 7pm. Wear warm clothing that is flexible so that your arms can move and footwear with closed toes (either joggers or water shoes, no thongs). This is a water sport so shoes may get wet! Bring a water bottle, hat, sunglasses and willingness to have a go. Beginners can have three ‘come-and-try’ sessions, which cost $5 each to cover insurance. Then, if you decide to become a regular paddler you can join the club for the whole season. So don’t put it off any longer! Grab a friend or family member and come and give paddling a try. We would love to introduce you to this exciting water sport. Check out our website www.forbesdragonboat.org or our Facebook page for more information.
Croquet News And Results Report Croquet week ending 11th August It was an interesting week with two players hitting the big 80 (years)! Congratulations to Jeff Liebich and John Job. A birthday lunch was held at the Forbes Bowling Club to celebrate the big day and was attended by 41 members. John H. Browne did a feat that had never been done on our courts before. He managed two holes in one. There seem to be more players winning all their games with seven members managing three wins on Tuesday. They were John Brown, Bruce
Field, Merv Langfield, Bob Murray, Kevin Rubie, Bill Scott and Marjorie Styles. This will add some heated competition to the end of year’s scores. Saturday’s Aussie Croquet was a windy affair with chairs and tables blowing around the area. One of our players had a senior’s moment turning up with a tennis racquet instead of his croquet mallet. That made everybody’s day and was the cause of great hilarity. There were three winners of three games namely John Allegri, Merv Langfield and Lyn Simmonds. By Harley Stewart
Within the normal knee joint are two Cshaped discs of cartilage called the medial and lateral menisci. They have a unique wedged, kidney shape and a blood supply only to their outer third which decreases as you age. Almost 70% of each meniscus is made up of water. These unique properties allow the knee to function as well as it does but they are also the reason why meniscus tears are one of the most common knee joint injuries. The wedge shape of your meniscus assists with the rotational stability that is created by the anterior cruciate ligament especially during pivoting movements. The large water content allows them to act like a shock absorber. As you walk, jump or run the knee absorbs large forces with the amount of force increasing exponentially as the speed of movement increases. Your meniscus helps to disperse these compressive forces over the whole knee therefore minimizing the damage to the cartilage that lines the bone surfaces. Meniscal tears are often classified as either traumatic or degenerative. In the younger population, meniscus tears are usually due to trauma by twisting on a slightly bent knee. The traumatic type of meniscal injuries is most often sports related. Commonly there is pain and a ‘pop’ is heard. The knee joint swells and occasionally the athlete will report a locking or painful clicking sensation. Degenerative tears occur in the older population due to natural age-related degeneration and often the person is unaware of the cause of pain and swelling. Stay tuned for my next column which will address the management and rehabilitation for the torn meniscus. For the fitness of you, Linda Reilly
