Sculpture Prize Winner Revealed It was a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere at this year’s unveiling of the Sculpture Forbes 2015 Acquisition Prize on Thursday 1 October at Albion Park. Over 400 people turned out to see the sculptures entered into this year’s prize from artists all over the country including Melbourne, Sydney and the greater Central West region. A number of sculptures were unveiled on Thursday evening but there could only be one winner for the $20,000 Acquisition Prize and that was Harrie Fasher whose self-portrait sculpture named “Bird and I” impressed judge Alan Somerville, a celebrated sculpture artist. Harrie’s sculpture, depicting a horse with a bird, references her passion for horses and her experiences as an accomplished equestrian athlete, as well as describing how she perceives herself in that context.
Her artworks explore the horse and its relationships to humans on a physical, historical and mythological level. Harrie has exhibited both nationally and internationally with works shown at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, Sydney’s Sculpture by the Sea, the Baer Art Centre in Iceland and London’s Mall Galleries. Wayne Richards, Sculpture Forbes co-ordinator and Forbes Services Memorial Club President said the quality of work this year is impressive. The objective of the competition is to provide a platform for a sculptor to display their artistic endeavours as well as to bring tourists and locals into the main shopping centre of Forbes to view the sculptures. MAYORAL NOTES There are still some spots left for the Forbes Hospital Public Open Day tomorrow and registrations have been extended until 4:30pm today. You can book in by calling 6850 7131 or visiting the website http://forbeshospitalopenday.eventbrite.com.au. More than 400 people went to the Sculpture Forbes 2015 unveiling last Thursday and it was a great night from all reports. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the unveiling as I was in Sydney for the Local Government NSW Board meeting. Make sure you have a look at Albion Park to see the new sculptures. There are also a number of sculptures on display in various shop windows for the month of October. The Local Government NSW Annual Conference will be held from Sunday to Tuesday at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. At the conference all Councils in attendance will be discussing the policies for the next 12 months. I am sure there will also be discussion on the Fit for the Future initiative by the State Government. Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Local Government Paul Toole will both be in attendance. There is a very interesting program scheduled and it will be a great chance to network with fellow councillors from all over NSW. This Sunday Forbes Neighbourhood Watch is hosting a Home Security Information Expo at Bunnings from 10am to 2pm. Throughout the day information will be provided including action plans, practical advice, checklists and home invasion prevention tips. There will also be product demonstrations and giveaways from 10am to 11am. Get along to this event

Fishing Win Member for Orange Andrew Gee is encouraging the community to nominate some of Forbes’ fishing spots for upgrades to make it easier for anglers with disability to access the best locations. Mr Gee said up to $200,000 would be invested to improve access to recreational fishing opportunities for all members of the community. “Fishing is one of Forbes’ most enjoyed past-times and I am proud the government is prioritising funding for programs like these that will provide improved conditions and access for anyone who wants to fish,” Mr Gee said. This funding will be invested into targeted fishing clinics as well as infrastructure upgrades such as new casting platforms and access ramps at some of our most popular angling sites. The partnership will involve $100,000 of direct funding for the development of specialised amenities and workshops to give anglers with disability equal access to popular fishing spots. A further $100,000 will be provided through the Recreational Fishing Trusts, in consultation with the Advisory Council on Recreational Fishing, for community groups and individuals across the state to make expressions of interest for funding for projects or programs that enhance fishing access for people with limited physical ability. Expressions of interest are open from today until 13 November. For more information visit www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational

IMAGE : Father and son team Grant and Matt Clifton are the brains behind VANFEST.
Stellar Lineup for Music Festival VANFEST has become one of the most highly anticipated events in the region and will see thousands of music and festival lovers swarming to Forbes Showground on Saturday 5 December. Coming to Forbes on Saturday 5 September, this year there is another stellar line-up, including Aussie electronic duo Peking Duk, stage veterans John Butler Trio and drum and bass giants Rudimental. “We couldn’t resist the opportunity to bring two of the best live acts to Forbes, the inclusion of Rudimental and Peking Duk fulfils our dedication to bringing exceptional live entertainment to regional NSW,” said VANFEST organiser Matt Clifton. VANFEST is a family run festival created by father and son team Matt and Grant Clifton, who you might know from the Vandenberg Hotel. After growing up in Tullamore NSW, Matt saw the need for quality entertainment in the regional area. With the help of his father they are bringing high profile international and local acts to Central West NSW.
Their combined efforts have been a success and have resulted in a strategic partnership with the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW and Southern Cross Austereo’s Hit Network, to ensure the continued growth of VANFEST. “We are looking forward to continuing to grow the VANFEST brand for many years to come as it provides an experience that would not normally be found in regional areas.” “VANFEST is a unique platform for major Australian and international artists to experience a different style of music festival in a diverse location supported by the local community.” In addition to an amazing line-up of live music and entertainment, VANFEST will offer an array of food and beverage outlets, VIP bars, meet and greet opportunities, extreme activations with partnering sponsors and a multitude of camping facilities including glamping, tent city, phone charging stations, communal common areas with bean bags and much more. The National BBQ Championships are only a week away and it is looking to be a fantastic event with some famous faces and a lot of good fun to be had. The 2015 BBQ Championships will offer everything you would associate with the traditional Aussie BBQ including tasting plates, cheese and wine sampling as well as appearances from Better Homes and Gardens chef Ed Halmagyi and The Voice contestant from Eugowra Cath Adams. There are four categories of meat to be judged such as chicken, beef, pork and lamb. This year the National BBQ Championships have teamed up with Relay for Life so both events will be held at the same venue. “It just works,” said Forbes BBQ Society Committee President Chris Roylance. “Two major events coming together provides the community and the region the opportunity to come together to celebrate, raise funds for a good cause and just have a really good time.” “The BBQ Championships are about bringing people together, having a bit of fun and putting Forbes on the map,” said Chris. Both events will be held at South Circle Forbes on Saturday 17 October and both committees are encouraging everyone in the community to come along and get involved. To register a team visit www.forbesbbqsociety.com.au or phone 0412 523 344.

Teens Living the Dream Over 150 people went through the doors of the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Friday night to help local band House of Tribes celebrate the launch of their debut album, Paint It Red at an all-ages event. After nine-months plugging away with lyrics, chords and falsettos, the group’s hard work finally accumulated in excitement and accomplishment with the sale of many copies of the album. “There were heaps of people there we didn’t know,” said Jake. “We were really happy with the support from the town. It was excellent.” “Some friends who I haven’t seen in a long time hit me up on Facebook and told me the CD is really good. I don’t think they were expecting it to be.” After performances from two local artists, House of Tribes took to the stage and it wasn’t long before the crowd was moving and everyone was having a good time. “It was cool, like an actual big live concert,” Jake said. “I wanted to keep going! I was so hyped up I couldn’t sleep afterwards.” “I was feeling so happy that we had just done this,” said Paige. “The turn-out was definitely not expected.” Teenage siblings Paige and Jake Ellison formed House of Tribes nearly three years

ago when Paige wanted to perform at the River Arts Festival, and since then their sound has taken off with performances across the region including Forbes, Young, Orange, Grenfell and Condobolin. “It was weird – we’d been recording this album for 9 months and we’d never seen a hard copy. When you actually have it in your
hands, it’s unreal,” said Jake. House of Tribes would like to thank the community for the support shown. The band will keep performing around the region and will continue working on their second album scheduled for 2016 with a similar but more polished sound. By Rosi Broom

October is Mental Health Month October is Mental Health Month and it is a time when everyone is encouraged to put their mental health first. It is a national mental health campaign co-ordinated every October by Mental Health Association NSW to promote good mental health and wellbeing in our local communities. According to Mental Health Association NSW, each year mental health issues affect one in five Australians with anxiety disorders and depression the most common mental health challenges. Mental Health Month creates an opportunity for people to look at their own mental health and focus on ways to enhance social and emotional wellbeing while building personal resilience and support networks. Senior Team Leader of Mental Health and Drug & Alcohol (MHDA) Service Terry Buckerfield said Western NSW Local Health District is working in partnership with various nongovernment organisations to host activities during Mental Health Month with the theme ‘Value Your Mind’. “This year’s theme aims to encourage everyone to think about their own mental health while promoting the need for everyone to make mental health a priority in their daily life,” Terry said.
A number of activities will be held throughout October to highlight the importance of good mental health and wellbeing. “We will be holding training days in Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid, a Mental Health Forum, walks to raise postnatal depression awareness and suicide awareness, and also a number of fun events including a scavenger hunt, drumming workshops and lip sync battles,” Health Promotion and Pre-

RURAL ROUNDUP Now is the Time for Fly Control With the wet weather last month, coupled with the start of spring’s warmer weather, now is time to be on the front foot for fly control in your sheep. Blowfly strike is considered to be one of the major problems confronting the Australian wool industry, with annual losses to the value of $150 million. Although management practices such as mulesing, crutching and tail-docking have reduced the susceptibility of sheep to breech strike, graziers remain almost totally reliant on insecticides for the control of strike. Lucilia cuprina (Australian sheep blowfly) is the main initiator of flystrike in Australia. The metallic green/bronze fly is approximately 9mm in length. These flies breed mainly on living sheep and can lay up to 250 eggs in clusters at a time. Protecting your flock from flystrike saves you time, labour, money and most important-
ly, losses from death. Adopting an integrated approach to sheep blowfly strike is practical, effective and sustainable – crutching, drenching for worm control (to keep breech clean from scouring), grazing management and mulesing and tailing, all play a critical part in control. This integrated approach is key to keeping fly strike under control. Many fly control products have no need for additional water, with ease of application in a backline formulation. Many products, such as Clik, also carry long protection periods, ensuring your flock is free from issue, allowing you to focus on other jobs. AgriWest stocks a large range of quality fly control products, so visit their experienced animal health advisors to ensure you are protected for the season to come! Remember, healthy livestock are profitable livestock!

RURAL ROUNDUP Rescue Rethink As the weather warms up and fauna is on the move, Essential Energy is reminding the public not to attempt animal rescues around electrical infrastructure and to call the network services provider for help. The reminder comes after Essential Energy went to the aid of volunteer rescue groups Koalas in Care and Friends of the Koala to help coax three inquisitive koalas away from two zone substation sites and a power pole recently. “Always remember to call Essential Energy to rescue any animals that might have strayed too close to the electricity network – never attempt to retrieve them yourselves,” said Essential Energy’s regional manager South Eastern, Phillip Green. It isn’t unusual for animals to climb power poles after mistaking the infrastructure for trees while birds occasionally nest on top of cross-arms. “The network should always be treated as live and attempting to gain access to an animal in this situation is dangerous for all involved,” Phillip said. “Crews are trained to safely remove dead animals from the electricity network and will also work closely with animal and environmental groups to rescue live animals.” “While birds and animals can often safely sit on powerlines and poles, the danger comes when contact is made with two surfaces, completing an electrical circuit.” “This year Essential Energy crews have been called out to rescue koalas, possums, birds, flying foxes and a range of reptiles from powerlines, substations and other electrical infrastructure.” Anyone who has concerns about an animal on Essential Energy’s network should call 132080.
Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Week ending: 2 October 2015 Two public holidays threw up an unusual sale schedule last week. Although all three selling centres were in operation on Wednesday, Melbourne & Sydney both sold in isolation at different times; Melbourne early in the week and Sydney on Thursday. Totalling 38,762 bales the offering was in line with previous weeks as they oscillate between 33k and 39k. Recently volumes have been well below last year with the last four weeks being almost 13% lower than the corresponding period from last season. Last weeks, weak start generally flowed through into the remainder of the series, resulting in modest losses of around 10 cents clean. However there was an encouraging close when most of the 16.5 to 19.0 range gained 5 cents. Merino skirtings were reasonably steady for the week, while cross bredstracked lower each day, finishing 20 to 30 cents lower. Merino Cardings softened 5 cents for the sale. A forecast offering of 42,937 bales, will make next week’s sale the largest sale since early July.

Buying a House and Land at Auction You will recall that in the last column we talked about buying a house or apartment in NSW is by private treaty. Auctions can sometimes seem daunting; not least because there is no cooling off period. If the gavel comes down and you’re the highest bidder you’re usually bound to go through with the purchase, no matter how unfair the contract might be. So long as you have your solicitor look over the contract for sale before you bid there is no reason an auction needs to be any riskier than buying by private treaty (so long, of course, as you stick to your budget and don’t get too caught up in the moment!). The Auctioneer and Vendor’s Agent must have a contract at and before the Auction for you to read over. You can ask to have a copy provided to you. If you give your Solicitor a copy of the Contract well before the Auction day, he or she may be able to identify any terms that might not be in your favour. Your Solicitor may also make sure you’re buying exactly what you intended to and that it’s in the condition you expect. That way if your bid is the winning one, you can be sure the contract you sign will be in your interests. If at the Auction your bid is the highest bid but the property is passed in by the Auctioneer because it did not reach the Reserve Price, you will no doubt be invited to negotiate further. If this happens, the Auction rules do not apply and any sale that comes out of such negotiations, the Contract will be one by Private Treaty. Should you need advice on this or any other legal matter, feel free to contact me or one of our solicitors or call into our office for an appointment.

Peter Dawson Warms Up for the Championships GOLF
Saturday’s Men’s comp was the 18-hole Monthly Medal. There were 61 players in the field, which was quite good when we consider the last weekend of the school holidays, the attention of Grand Finals football, and the many events occurring around the town. It was apt that the sponsors were Robb’s Jewellers, as there was many a bright crystal among the course conditions and the scoring. The winner of the A Grade Monthly Medal (22 players) was Peter ‘Ecky’ Dawson with a Nett score of 68. To produce his par round, Ecky’s shot 2-under for the front 9 and 2-over for the back 9. A bogey-bogey start to the back 9 put the pressure on him but he recovered well. This was surely a practice round with Ecky’s eye on the Championships commencing next week. Rob Webb did very well, shooting a balanced 41 for both 9’s to finish Runner-up on nett 70, by count back. Rob was cruising on the front nine, then really whooped up with an eagle on the 6th. In B Grade (23), Cameron McMillan played steady golf to finish with a nett 70. His score on the 11th was a little untidy, but for the other 17 holes he was always around his handicap. Runner-up was William Gordon (71 nett) who also was tidy, matching Cameron hole by hole except on the 4th and 13th, where he was a little astray. These two Junior players are really demonstrating the high calibre and depth of our Junior members. The C Grade (16) Monthly Medal very clear-
ly showed that you do not need to be long to be a winner. Frank Hanns took the honours with a carefully constructed nett 70, finishing one shot better than Runner-up Craig Myers. They played at opposite ends of the day, indicating that the conditions were very fair throughout. Craig found it better to score well by playing the fairway beside where he should have been. He met many players that way, but did not see much of his playing group. The ball sweep went to 72 on count back and was shared by those above plus: 70 – D Bayley, 71 – S Grallelis, Andrew Drane, N McMillan, R Nixon, B Shine, 72 – A Rees, A McDonald, I Bown. Well done guys. Nearest the pins were: 9th – Anthony Gordon; 18th – Ron Morris. Anthony got his ‘2’ but Ronnie missed out. There were five 2’s scored all day, with the 9th hole being most prolific. Jack Clarke needed his ‘2’ to try to stem the flow of lost holes for the “Keno Stakes”. He hoped his ‘2’ would pressure his opponent to miss his, but Stevie G held his nerve to get his and keep the foot hard down on the Keno stakes. There was some consistent play by many players. One consistency stands out markedly – 5’s on every hole on the back-9. Brian Everest achieved this feat, thankful that he had a good front-9 to make his card look respectable. The worst of it was 3-putt on the last hole to complete the set. Sunday’s play was an 18-hole Stableford Medley. It was a small but lively field, with many players ‘absent on Grand Final duties’. However it was a good mix of men, ladies
and visitors. The winner was Jill Cripps with 39 points, just ahead of Rob Lea on 38 points. Unfortunately the scores took a dive from there, despite the good playing conditions. The ball sweep went to 33 and included Jill, Rob, and Mitchell Andrews (33) on count back. No 2’s were recorded, so the NTP’s are pretty lonely – 9Th: J Cripps; 18th: F Smith. This was a good day for the Ladies. On Monday 5 October, which was a public holiday, there was also a Stableford Medley. There were 21 players who obviously wanted some fresh air after the Grand Final television watching blitz. The Duncan family must have been really happy with the AFL result, because they all were in good spirits, although Essendon did not play. The winner was Biana Duncan, with 47 points, and ahead of Niel Duncan on 45 points. Briana was quite tidy on the front-9 but scored better on the back-9 despite having a ‘wipe’ on one hole. Scoring ‘4 pointers’ on the 10th, 14th and 16th holes really did the job and it was good golf all around. The NTPs went to – 9th: N Duncan, 18th: E Hush. Niel got his ‘2’ but sadly Eileen missed out. Other 2’s, were scored on the 9th by J Cripps and the 1st by N Duncan, who luckily avoided the ‘A par on the 1st hole leads to a bad round’ rule. On Thursday 1 October, the Vets played a 12-hole event at Forbes in delightful conditions. Encouraging numbers of 32 players participated, with 19 from Forbes, and 13 from Parkes. The winner was Milton Cartwright (F), with 27 points, a little lower than the conditions may have seemed likely. Runner-up on 26, by count back, was Dave Williams (F). The Bradman Award went to Allen Affleck (P) who just did not seem to get any rhythm going. He did manage more than one point per hole, just. The NTP’s went to – 9th A Grade: P Bishop, B Grade: T Edols; 18th A Grade: B Toole, B Grade L Byrne. The Mick Miller Shield emphasised that when Forbes turn it on, they really turn it on. The field was fairly even, but it was an emphatic result for Forbes, with 151 points to Parkes 133. That was a real treat for the Forbes boys who have faltered over recent weeks. There are some very important AGM’s coming up. The Mens Committee AGM is scheduled for Thursday 15 October, at the Forbes Sportman’s Hotel. The following week, the FGA AGM is to be held on 21 October, also at the Sportsman’s Hotel. By Short Putt.
