BOOK AN EYE EXAMINATION NOW FAIR FUN... There was plenty of action at the annual Forbes Show. The bumper cars being a favourite among those that enjoy a little bit of reckless driving!
Fireworks, Fairy Floss And Fun At The 143rd Forbes Show
The Forbes Show was blessed with perfect weather last weekend with many people coming through the gates to enjoy the attractions, competitions and events. “A great community event was held and whilst the rain held off it is more than welcome to ‘come on down’ anytime from now on in,” said Forbes Show president Doug Nadin. Whilst most of us are still reminiscing about the show just past, the Forbes Show committee has already started working on next year’s event. “Plans are already in place to make the 144th Forbes Show even bigger and better. “Thank you to all the competitors, exhibitors, indoor and outdoor trade displays and all the businesses and individuals who supported the Show through sponsorship. We look forward to working with you all in
2019,” said Doug. In true Forbes style, the town once again came together in supporting its community. “Without a doubt the most support has come from the community of Forbes and the surrounding district. Congratulate yourselves for supporting your Forbes Show!” said Doug. The dog high jump events and farmers’ challenge both proved to be very popular again this year and the centre ring was full of horses all weekend with show jumping competitions. The winner of the 2018 Forbes Showgirl competition was Sally Downie, the Junior Miss Showgirl title was presented to Ru Little, Tiny Tot winner was Isabel Pearce and Master Stockman went to Thomas Vonthien. THUMBS ... MAYORAL NOTES It was wonderful to receive grant funding last week as part of round two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund. Over $1 million will be spent on upgrades around the lake, including Lions Park which will see a new rotunda and barbeque area, as well as new toilets in two locations. To activate the main street masterplan in Templar Street $573,000 will be used and $150,000 will be used to upgrade the Wirrinya Aquatic Centre. For a new equestrian facility in Forbes, $220,000 is earmarked. There are also various community groups that will benefit, such as the Rugby Club and Croquet Club. I would like to thank our staff, councillors and the Riverside Community Gardens volunteers who made our stand at the show look great and win the “Best Outdoor Exhibit”. Forbes hosted both Junior Rugby Union and Rugby League finals in town last Saturday. It was great to see on Sunday the Forbes Magpies win their grand final in a

It’s All About ME, Grain Crops For Livestock Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update
This week saw 38,549 bales put before the trade, and while it was an increase on last weeks volume, the season-todate cumulative total remains much less, with 12.5% less wool offered for the same period. The exchange rate gave overseas processors some assistance, as the local currency continued to trend lower against the US dollar. Midway through the week the AUD hit 71.5 US cents, a two-year low, before staging a recovery to finish at 71.68 cents late on Thursday. Price wise in local terms, the market opened on a strong note and resumed its upward trajectory from last week. The first day recorded widespread increases but the momentum could not be maintained, with prices easing slightly on Thursday. Merino Skirtings found good support and were mostly firm on the previous sale. Merino Cardings were also reasonably limited, and the Merino Carding Indicators closed with only minor movements. The smallest national Crossbred offering in three years had mixed results; firming in some areas and losing ground in others. Source AWEX
As the big dry continues, NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) scientists have some tips for producers to explore how to best maximise opportunities from moisturestressed wheat and canola crops. NSW DPI researcher, John Piltz said producers know that by making early decisions to graze or conserve crops, they can maximise the nutritional value of cereal crops that may not be harvestable for animal production. “It’s worth remembering that dietary metabolisable energy (ME) is the key to animal production gains, but ME declines in the post-vegative growth stage,” said John. “We advise producers to accurately evaluate all their on-farm and sale options for potential grain production, grazing, hay and silage or agistment opportunities. “If crop yield is low, less than two tonnes of dry matter per hectare, hay and silage making losses will be high and grazing would be recommended. “If you’re going to graze the crop it is better to act sooner than later, delaying cutting from early October to early November on the chance of rain would reduce ME levels with a negative impact on feed quality and potential animal production.” To better inform management decisions John and NSW DPI analytical chemist, Richard Meyer, have predicted steer live weight change using Grazfeed and compared with data from wheat and canola samples tested by NSW DPI’s Feed Quality Service (FQS). Samples from 2008-09 and 2017-18 had

an average ME of 9.0 megajoules (MJ) per kilogram of dry matter, which would deliver a predicted daily live weight gain of 0.37 kilograms per day for a nine-month old, 280 kilogram British breed steer. The more ME animals eat, the quicker they grow, as long as crude protein, vitamins and minerals are kept in balance. Increasing ME from 8.5 to 10.5 MJ for the same steer is predicted to increase live weight gain from 0.15 to 0.92 kilograms per day. In the post-vegative stage, crop ME declines an average 0.05 MJ per day as plants mature. Results of the study are available through the Graham Centre for Agricultural Innovation, an alliance between NSW DPI and Charles Sturt University. This community orchestra has been granted funding by CMOC-Northparkes Mines and Forbes Shire Council to engage with local schools through an interactive educational tour. In all, the orchestra will be performing for six schools over the two separate days, reaching nearly 1,000 students and staff. Each performance is scheduled at 50 minutes and focuses on educating primary aged children about music appreciation and a variety of instruments. Students are offered insights into the inner workings of an orchestra through these entertaining and interactive performances. The orchestra’s tour started at Bedgerebong Public School and Forbes North Public School on Thursday. The Lachlan Regional Orchestra will be performing at various primary schools across the Forbes Shire during their tour.
School will see the orchestra on Monday. The community based orchestra is an initiative of the Mitchell Conservatorium. It brings together more than 20 members from across the Parkes and Forbes Shires, ranging in age from 8 years to 80 years. For local musicians keen to experience a community based music group, now is
an excellent time to give it a try! A combined music event is being prepared for the 3rd and 4th of November. Participants will join together for a weekend of musical workshops followed by a combined performance in Parkes. It is an event made possible through the generosity of Parkes Shire Council.
Farmer of the Year Nominations Closing Soon NSW Minister for Primary Industries and outgoing NSW Farmers President, Derek Schoen announced the opening of applications for the prestigious NSW Farmer of the Year award for 2018. Speaking at the NSW Farmers Annual Conference recently, NSW Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair said the award is both a celebration and recognition of farming excellence through the diverse range of enterprises across NSW. “Our farmers represent some of the most innovative, industrious primary producers in the country and produce some of the highest quality food and fibre to be found anywhere in the world,” said Niall. “The state’s $15 billion primary industries sector is going from strength to strength under the stewardship of our farmers, who demonstrate drive and determination to run efficient, profitable and sustainable businesses.” Derek has served as a judge of the award throughout his presidency and said that the 2017 finalists represented the breadth of NSW’s farming sector. “From biodynamic, organic egg farming to a commercial cropping enterprise gaining efficiencies through environmental practices, from young guns through to farmers who have had a life-long commitment to farming excellence, the calibre of applications to the NSW Farmer of the Year award continues to be hugely impressive,” he said. “The award helps identify outstanding farmers who are pushing the boundaries within their industry and in farming generally, and recognises people with outstanding management skills who demonstrate a combination of innovation, profitability, sustainability and community involvement.” The successful 2018 Farmer of the Year will be awarded $10,000 and finalists will receive $2,000. The award is an initiative of the NSW Department of Primary Industries and NSW Farmers. You can both apply and nominate a farmer online at www.nswfarmeroftheyear.com.au with entries closing 26th September 2018.

There will be a sausage sizzle, as well as plenty of finger food, cakes, slices, tea and coffee. Please RSVP by Thursday, 20th September to 0428 662 549 or 0498 132 758. Alternatively send an email to: a97.9fm@ outlook.com. The station was established in 1992 for the purpose of presenting alternative music and news programs to those presented by the ABC and other commercial radio stations. The studio is based in Forbes and the listening area is predominately the Forbes and Parkes Shire area, including all other surrounding areas.
The station is completely run by volunteer staff, with the exception of one part-time office lady. There are around 28 volunteers on the announcing staff who do regular time slots each week. The announcers provide 15 hours of live programs each day, all voluntary. The total volunteer force is around 35 members. Keeping the station on air is very costly. There are many licenses and permits required to comply with all government regulations, including other running costs. The station’s main source of income comes from sponsors who advertise on the station. The annual member’s contribution also helps keep them afloat. Why not become a member? Membership is very cheap at only $10 per year or $15 per couple. They are also always looking for sponsors support. Your advertising has the potential to reach a listening audience of around 30,000 people at a very reasonable cost. Please contact the station if you would like more information.

Lateral ligament sprains of the ankle are one of the most common sports injuries, and because they are so common they are often managed too casually and many go untreated. From a clinical point of view the problem with a lateral ligament sprain of the ankle is that they have a very high incidence of recurrence. Gribble et al, 2016, Attenborough et al, 2015 and Tanen et al, 2014 (references can be supplied upon request), found 30-50% of the athletic population and 20% of the general population will go on to suffer from chronic ankle symptoms. These symptoms are often referred to as chronic ankle instability and include pain, swelling, laxity and instability. The contributing factors to the development of chronic ankle instability include: not seeking medical attention for the primary lateral ankle sprain; and returning to sport when pain has decreased but function has not been fully restored. The absence of pain does not mean that you are ready to return to sport. Decreases in strength, range of movement, proprioception and balance need to be restored. Doherty et al, 2016 found that exercise therapy when performed in high doses (5 x 30 mins per week for six weeks) reduced the chances of recurrent lateral ligament sprains in the ankle by 42% and bracing/ taping reduced the risk by 62%. It is currently recommended that you brace or tape your ankle for every game and training session for at least six weeks. The decision to return to sport after a lateral ligament sprain should be based on strength, balance and hop tests rather than time or absence of pain. For the fitness of you Linda Reilly

Mark Watts Lorraine Lowe presented the cheque donated by the Forbes Old Time/New Vogue Dancing Group to Grace Hosking, Treasurer of Royal Far West Children's Health Scheme Trundle branch and coordinator of the "Come and See" Programme.
Dancing For A Good Cause The Trundle branch of the Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme held an Old Time/New Vogue dance on Sunday, 2nd September at the Memorial Hall in Trundle. Dancers from Forbes, Nyngan, Dubbo and Eumungerie enjoyed a wonderful social afternoon, dancing to the live music played and sung by Phil Redenbach. Everyone feasted on a sumptuous afternoon tea provided by the Royal Far West Trundle branch and the dancers. A cheque for $250 was presented by Lorraine Lowe, on behalf of the Forbes Old Time/New Vogue Dancing Group, to Grace Hosking, Treasurer of Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme Trundle branch and coordinator of the “Come and See” Programme. This money will go towards implementing the “Come and See” Programme at both Trundle schools. The programme provides weekly literacy and numeracy tuition on a one-on-one basis. The Forbes dancing group welcomes newcomers to join them. The dancers meet weekly on a Wednesday night at the Forbes Uniting Church hall for dancing and social interaction. By Christine Wild

FORBES SPORT
Good Scores In Golf On Saturday, 53 players contested an Individual Stableford event, sponsored by Marg Hurst in memory of her dear, Ron Hurst. The A-division winner was Tony Cogswell, with 42 points. Runner-up was Doug Churchill with a good 39 points. In the Bdivision, Peter Tisdell won with a score of 43 points. Runner-up was Bob Borger with his 42 points. The ball sweep went to 37 points on count back, going to: 43 – P Tisdell; 42 – T Cogswell, R Borger; 40 – G Webb, M Watts; 39 – D Churchill, R Morris; 38 – P Kay, G Collits and 37 – P Cowhan, R Nixon, L Little, P Grayson. The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Pymont; 18th – M Watts. The best story of the day goes to Tony Cogswell’s ‘2’, scored on the 10th hole. His tee shot was slightly left, from where he drew his second around the trees. The ball flew as he had hoped, landed, rolled and disappeared into the hole. His jubilation was shared by all in his group. Sunday was a beautiful Spring day, which was enjoyed by a small but energetic field in the Stableford Medley. No doubt the show had tired a few regulars out.
Croquet News
The winner was Bruce Carpenter, with 33 points. He nudged in ahead of Rod Besgrove on count back. There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Bess Shields; 18th – Rod Besgrove. An enjoyable day was had by Kevin Rivett, a visitor from Portland GC. He was in the mix with the front-runners but unfortunately missed out on count back. By Short Putt
Mark Watts watches intently as he tries to score a ‘2’.
Croquet week ending 8th September Tuesday’s golf croquet saw three players winning their three games. The pick of the bunch was one of our newest players, Neville Spry who has only been playing for a short period of time. Other winners were Elvy Quirk and Lyn Simmonds. Well done girls! Our monthly birthday lunch was held at The Bakery in Templar Street, which catered well for such a large group. The birthday babies for September were Lorraine Todd, Merv Langfield, Kevin Rubie and John Brown. Good news from our two hospital patients is that they are improving. One of them hopes to be home on Friday, 7th September and the other on Saturday, 8th September. The Forbes Show did not deter the faithful who still turned up for Saturday’s Aussie croquet. Although there were some very quick departures from the courts as many left for all the fun of the fair. The winners of Saturday’s games were John Cole, Dorothea Croker, Bruce and Lorna Field, Bob Murray and Alec Todd who all won three games each. Congratulations to those who won ribbons for their contributions to the Show. By Harley Stewart
