Great Day at Forbes Spring Races With brilliant sunshine, a good crowd and some sensational fashions, Saturday turned out to be a great day for all who attended the Spring Races in Forbes.

The organisers of Fashions on the Field, Leigh Bartholomaeus, Sarah West and Carmen Duffy were very pleased with how the day went.

“We wanted to thank all of our amazing sponsors who gave some great prizes and who we couldn’t have organised this day without,” said Carmen Duffy.

“There was a total of $4,500 in cash and prizes awarded on the day to the many lucky winners.”

Beth Link was awarded Most Elegant Lady, Thomas Godfrey took out Best Dressed Gent, Kate Ralph won the award for Cutting Edge, Lily Bolam won Tiny Tots and Charlie Ste-

phenson was the Junior Winner.

Judges Casey Evans, Cheryl Newsom and 2015 Forbes Showgirl Stacey Clarke were impressed with the fashions with wellknown local Annabelle Green acting as MC. The task of selecting the overall winners in each category was very difficult and there was hardly any difference between the top three finalists in the major sections.

The Spring Cup feature race was sponsored by this year’s major sponsors, Lachlan Ready Mix (1100 metres.)

The winner of this race was LAYNE, a horse trained by Merv Rumble from Warren and ridden by jockey Clayton Gallagher.

The race-goers were about even with last year’s numbers with just over 1500 people coming through the gates last Saturday.

50 Years at Wyndham Avenue MAYORAL NOTES The Local Government NSW Annual Conference was held earlier this week and all Councils in attendance discussed policies for the next 12 months. The Minister for Local Government was firm on some of the changes that need to be made in the sector. He also explained to us that once the IPART report is received from the Fit for the Future initiative, Councils will have another opportunity to determine their future but the indicators are that they will step in and do it for us. There are only a couple of weeks left until we receive the report. I can’t wait. The actual conference program was interesting and it was a great chance for us to network with fellow councillors from across NSW. I hope many of you were able to have a look through our new hospital during the public open day last Saturday. The new building is now in operation with staff and patients moving into the facility this week. The new facility is second to none and the complete redevelopment is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.

Last week, the General Manager Brian Steffen and I attended the Joint Organisations forum in Sydney in preparation for legislation.

It was an opportunity to express our views on enabling legislation versus prescriptive. We are advocating the position of versatility so we have the opportunity to collaborate with Centroc Councils for delivery of services.

This weekend will be a busy one with the National BBQ Championships on tomorrow from 12pm and Relay for Life starting tomorrow at Grinsted Oval. It is great that these two events have partnered with each other.

On November 13, 1965 Forbes High School was officially opened by the Hon. C B Cutler ED, MLA – Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Science at its current location at 18 Wyndham Avenue, Forbes.

Prior to opening at the new site the Forbes High School was located in Browne Street with some of the original buildings still standing at TAFE Western and also Forbes Public School.

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the school in its current location and the celebrations have been planned for the 14th and 15th of November this year.

On Saturday 14 November a Cocktail Party will be held in the upstairs function room at the Forbes Inn commencing at 7.00pm.

Tickets are just $50 and include champagne on arrival, gourmet canapes and entertainment. Tickets are selling fast and numbers are strictly limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Forbes High School will host an open day and school tour on Sunday 15th November so that ex-students, teachers and community members can reflect on memories at Forbes High and explore the new facilities and learning opportunities now available through public education.

Ex-students and teachers are encouraged to forward 50 Year Celebrations event information to friends and family or organise a class reunion for the weekend.

Organisers are also seeking photographs or memorabilia that could be borrowed and displayed during the weekend.

Forbes Aboriginal and Community Working Party held their last meeting on 12 October at Forbes Services Memorial Club.

Taste of Italia Caterina and her husband Vittorio Murda have opened their new restaurant/café next door to Spotlight and they are ready for business!

Both Caterina and Vittorio were born in the south of Italy and it is this cuisine which features heavily in their meals.

Café Aglio and Olio, (garlic and oil) features food containing garlic, oil, basil, chillies and the staple red sauce Napoletana.

The Murdas moved to Forbes from Western Sydney where they ran two Italian restaurants to be closer to their family this year.

They saw the opportunity to return to Forbes as there was an opening in the market and all the family could help out.

Opening at 7:30 during the week for great coffee, sandwiches, focaccias, and homemade cakes. In the evenings it is a true restaurant with traditional pastas and pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven.

The pizza menu has traditional favourites with gourmet pizzas in the mix like Contadina, a “farmers pizza” with vegetables including eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and roasted pumpkin.

There is also Marinara and Calzone which has ricotta, mushrooms, ham and olives.

For the sweet tooth, there is a Nutella pizza on the menu with strawberries and bananas.

If you don’t have plans for dinner tonight, drop into Café Aglio and Olio and give Caterina and Vittorio a warm Forbes welcome!

Local Band Joins BBQ Champs The 2015 National BBQ Championships are happening this weekend and Forbes BBQ Society are excited to announce that local folk indie band House of Tribes will be performing on stage.

Forbes BBQ Society President Chris Roylance said that having House of Tribes on board along with well-known Eugowra local, Cath Adams, the BBQ Championships are set to draw in crowds with such a great line-up.

House of Tribes are a local band that have played gigs right across the Central West having their songs played on radio station Triple J and recently launching their first album ‘Paint it Red’.

The local four-piece band formed at the Kalari-Lachlan River Arts Festival in 2013 and since then have played at events in Forbes, Young, Orange, Grenfell and Condobolin.

Chris Roylance said that preparations are in full swing with lots to do for everyone. “We also have a jumping castle and face painting for the kids, great food options including tasting plates to sample.”

“Between Relay for Life and the BBQ Championships we are expecting over 2,000 people throughout the day. We are really looking forward to the atmosphere,” said Chris.

McHappy Day Rocks Your Socks Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is calling on Forbes residents to show their support for the charity by simply rocking their Ronald socks off in the lead up to McHappy Day on Saturday 17 October.

For the first time, the all-new Ronald Socks have been added as an item to the fundraising mix and are a fun way for people to show their support for RMHC. Now in its 25th year, McHappy Day raises money for RMHC which creates, finds and supports programs across Australia that help seriously ill children and their families.

Their programs help families all the way along the often long journey to recovery, including providing a home-away-from-home for a night or even a year so families can stay together in a friendly environment; through to providing school catch-up services through the Learning Program.

This year, one of Australia’s favourite musicians Ricki-Lee has been announced as this year’s Ambassador for McHappy Day. She is encouraging Australians to get out and about on Saturday to help raise a record $3.4 million for RMCH. Ricki-Lee has had a long and close association with RMHC since she participated in her first ever charity activity – visiting the fami-

New Hospital

Hundreds of people attended the public open day at Forbes Hospital’s new facility on the weekend, allowing them to preview the structure which is part of a $40.9 million redevelopment.

Before the open day community tours began, a traditional Indigenous smoking ceremony was conducted by Ralph Naden, followed by a Welcome to Country performance led by Aileen Allen.

“The community tours provided a unique opportunity to look inside the contemporary and spacious new building before staff and patients move in,” said Member for Orange Andrew Gee. “It’s great that so many locals took the opportunity to look through our fabulous new facility. Feedback has been incredibly positive.”

The new building at Forbes Hospital features an emergency department, an inpatient unit, birthing suites for maternity services and clinical support services, including medical imaging.

The $113.7 million Lachlan Health Service Project is funded by the NSW Government and includes both the planning and capital components for the Forbes and Parkes hospital redevelopments.

The Lachlan Health Service project is scheduled for completion in early 2016.

March to Honour ANZAC Spirit History will be repeated on Saturday 31 October when the Boomerang March travels from Parkes to Forbes by train.

A re-enactment of the World War I “Boomerangs” recruiting March will take place throughout towns across the state including Forbes in a celebration of the volunteer values which have been epitomised in the ANZAC Spirit.

The original marches from Parkes, Bogan Gate, Alectown, Condobolin and Peak Hill left Parkes on 19 January 1916, picking up recruits along the route through Forbes, Eugowra, Gooloogong, Canowindra, Billimari, Cowra, Woodstock, Lyndhurst, Mandurama, Carcoar, Blayney, Newbridge, Georges Plains and Perthville. A contingent of 202 men marched into Bathurst on 5 February 1916.

This re-enactment will commence and finish a few months earlier than the historically correct dates but the route will still pass through most of the communities visited on the original march. Participants will travel from Bathurst to Sydney and join with participants of six other recruiting march re-enactments to attend the Remembrance Day service in Martin Place.

The Lachlan Valley Railway will run three return motor rail trips during the day from Forbes to Parkes providing a unique opportunity for families to travel to the Boomerang March commemorative events in both towns.

Lachlan Valley Rail will also be running two 80-minute heritage rail trips. The first will leave Parkes at 9:30am, returning at 10:50am. The second will depart from Forbes at 12:30pm and return at 1:40pm.

The Evolving Flute On Sunday 15 November at Forbes Town Hall, flautist Phil Braithwaite and Pianist Cindy Fox explore the development of the flute from the Baroque era through to the modern period with the extended techniques exploited by the modern composers.

Ranging from Bach to Schubert, Poulenc and beyond, this concert showcases the full range of the instrument in a program of beautiful baroque classical and 20th century compositions.

Successful Security Expo Night Forbes own branch of Neighbourhood Watch hosted its first ever Home Security Information Expo at Bunnings on Sunday 11 October.

About 45 people attended the event including Mayor Phyllis Miller who opened the Expo by welcoming the audience and thanking Bunnings for coming to Forbes.

Police Constable Daniel Greef spoke for a while on a range of issues and provided some very good tips on how to improve the security in your home, around your home and when obtaining cash from ATMs. Constable Greef can also offer free home security assessments so if you are interested, feel free to give him a call at the Forbes Police Station on 6853 9999.

Bunnings staff members presented informative, helpful and entertaining demonstrations on a great range of home security products, including alarms, locks, safes and solar lights.

Mental Health

Mothers who have experienced post-natal depression are among those being refused insurance on the basis of having a history of mental illness, according to a leading lawyer.

Andrew Weinmann from Slater and Gordon said Australians with any history of mental illness are being unfairly punished by insurance companies who are refusing to give them disability and income protection insurance.

“Insurance companies need to stop discriminating on the basis of mental illness,” Andrew said.

“It is wrong to put everyone with a history of mental illness in the too-hard basket.”

“Many insurers simply refuse to provide income protection to anyone with any history at all of mental illness. That includes mums who have had post-natal depression and people who needed counselling for family difficulties and stresses.”

“Sometimes insurers refuse to provide insurance in the first place. Sometimes they will try to cancel a policy when a person makes a claim after having cover for years by saying the history of mental illness should have been disclosed in the original application for insurance.”

“If you have been denied insurance, or had your policy cancelled because of a history of mental illness, you might be able to take legal action,” Andrew said.

Heartworm Help Recent reports show an increase in the number of cases of the potentially lethal Heartworm. Why is it a problem? Heartworm causes heart failure and death in dogs. Mosquitoes transmit heartworms to dogs by injecting larvae into your dog when they bite the dog.

The larvae migrate from the skin into the blood where they lodge in the heart and develop into adult worms. Adult worms can cause heart failure and death of dogs of any age.

This process can take 6 months so signs could show up months after your dog is infected.

Any dog that hasn’t been on regular heartworm prevention and is exposed to mosquitoes is at risk.

Your dog may initially show no signs if it has a small amount of worms. If the worms are affecting your dog’s heart function they may: • Cough • Lose weight • Look pot bellied • Get tired quickly when exercised • Faint It can be treated. Dogs who are not showing signs of infection have a good chance of recovery. If a dog has a large infestation of worms they have a lower chance of surviving treatment.

Can it be prevented? YES! There are many preventions out there ranging from monthly tablets, spot-ons and a yearly vaccine.

All dogs should be tested before starting prevention as they may have a low infestation of worms that do not show signs that the preventions will not kill. Some preventions may actually harm your dog if there is a low level of infection.

November is Heartworm Awareness Month.

Stud Farm’s Success A champion ewe from this year’s Canowindra Show came from Pine Creek Poll Dorset Stud who have only been showing Poll Dorset for a short time and were over the moon with the result.

Showing commenced in the NSW Poll Dorset Championships in Cowra last year, with a successful win in the Novice Ewe class, and third place in the Ewe Lamb Class (1/14). That lamb was Highly Commended in the Woolly Ewe Under 1.5 Years the following year.

Founded on Woodlock bloodlines, Pine Creek have continued with similar breeding objectives for early maturing, good muscling and ease of lambing.

The champion ewe came out of the Shorn ewe Under 1.5 Years Class.

Pine Creek also came first and third in the Bare Shorn Ewe Class and sixth in the Ram Lamb.

Continuing on their breeding program, Pine Creek purchase stud rams from Springwater Stud which are recognised and renown for early maturing and good muscling.
