STICKY BUSINESS... Forbes Public School student Melandri Van Coller along with her friend Mia Clark had their own stall at Saturday’s school market day. These two innovative Year 4 entrepreneurs sold out of their magical slime that was very popular amongst the kids at the market.

Market Day Success For Forbes Public School

Forbes Public Primary School was blessed with beautifully bright and sunny skies at their fourth annual school market day hosted by the P&C on the school’s oval last Saturday. With thorough planning and preparation the market day had all the makings of a successful event, which it certainly turned out to be! Approximately 1,800 people attended the event to browse the more than 70 high quality stalls from across the Central West region on display at the market. Children also had lots to do with all the fun activities available to keep them occupied while parents could do some shopping. The Game Zone and jumping castle was a hive of activity. By the amount of little butterflies, tigers and fairies running around it was clear that the face painting

once again proved to be a favourite among the children. There were also many with pink, blue or green hair, after clearly finding the hairspray stall. Singers and musicians kept the crowds entertained and Kristen’s Dance Studio and Kumiai Ryu Forbes put on very engaging demonstrations. Raffles were drawn on the day with the very impressive first prize of an YCF 50A Two Wheeler 50cc going to Jono Webb; second prize was a BBQ basket won by Jess Walsh and third prize was a family hamper taken by Patrick Dooley. This event is the school’s major fundraiser for the year and this time round they managed to raise more than $5,000 for the school. By Gizell van Wyk

You may have noticed work happening near the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre this week. New sculptures are being installed and they will be unveiled next Friday, 30th November, at the opening of the Dreaming Centre expansion. This project has been driven by our local art society and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved, especially Keith Mullette and Kim Muffet. The Boscars Midsummer Night’s Dream Gala Dinner

Some of the boys at the final rehearsal recently wearing their School Spectacular shirt and cap were Ryan Glennan, William Stamp, Brodie Morley and Beau Dukes – Rankmore.

Showtime For Spectacular Students

Eight students from the Forbes High School Support Unit were selected to form part of a section in the School Spectacular, namely D’Arts Ensemble, which specifically caters for students with special needs. All the students were extremely excited when they recently received their School Spectacular bag and cap. The school’s support unit staff, students and parents/carers of the students attending the Spectacular have all been amazed at the overwhelming response received from local community groups and local businesses. Their major sponsors include Evolution Mining ($2,000), RSL Club ($1,200), Lions Club ($1,000) and Ipomea

(Rotary) Club ($500). The donations have lessened the students’ total expenses by an astonishing 65 percent. They have also each received a School Spectacular shirt, bag and cap which will be extremely useful during their week in Sydney. They are in Sydney this week until tomorrow, and will be doing four separate performances at Qudos Bank Arena. They will be performing a surprise dance that may not be revealed until the first performance today. Anyone wanting to watch the show can do so when it is televised the following week on Saturday, 1st December on Channel 7.

The committee for the Forbes Boscars is pleased to announce that the Gala Dinner event will be held at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Friday, 8th February 2019. “The Gala Dinner will be under the magical theme of Midsummer Night’s Dream – a whimsical theatrical theme!” said Michael Jelbart, Chair of the Boscars committee. “We are delighted to be working with 123 Tix for this event and will be publicising the link for ticket purchases on social media later this week,” added Michael. The Boscars nominations have been very promising with submissions for all categories. “The committee awaits for the judges to make their final decisions to enable the award nominees to progress to the next step,” said Michael. The committee meet fortnightly to ensure that the plans for the Gala Boscars event are well on track. Medal Of Medallist Decided

In an engaging performance, Peter Nixon scored 69 nett to take out the ‘Medal of Medallist’ honours for 2018. Pete turned square with the card and finished square for an all par performance. The Saturday Men’s competition was an Individual Stroke, sponsored by Loomzy’s Fish n Fix. The field of 59 players enjoyed sunny conditions across a green course. Cam McMillan, a young player also in form, took out the A-Division with a very good round of 74, nett 67. He got there on count back from Stuart French and powered his way out of trouble to score his 67. In the B-Division, it was Ethan Gaffney who finished with 69 to take the honours. In a classic display of playing to his handicap, Maurie Westwood took runner-up with a fine 70 nett. The ball sweep went to 72 nett on count back, going to: 67 – C McMillan, S French; 69 – E Gaffney, P Nixon, B Hodges; 70 – T Callaghan, P Grayson, R Nixon, M Westwood; 71 – P Maher, B Chandler, W Judge; 72 – K Sanderson, N McMillan, R Morris. Alongside the comp NTP’s there were ad-

ditional sponsored NTP’s. The comp NTP’s went to: 1st – P Pymont; 9th – P Nixon. The sponsored NTP’s went to: 3rd – B-Grade W Judge, and nil for both A-Grade and C-Grade; 18th – A-Grade P McDade, BGrade G Webb, C-Grade B Chandler. The Medal of Medallists was held in conjunction with the stroke event. Of the 32 eligible medallists, 22 were able to participate. They generally produced good scores with players across all grades contributing well and seven producing sub-par rounds. Peter Nixon’s 69 nett pipped Richard Nixon, P Grayson and T Callaghan on 70, and too good for Warwick Judge and Bruce Chandler on 71. There was no Sunday Stableford Medley, with instead the Forbes Rotary Charity Day being held. This Sunday, Forbes will be holding its VW Scramble, previously known as the Holden Scramble. There is still plenty of opportunity to register, either online or at the Pro Shop. By Short Putt

Croquet News It was good to see some of our former players back on the courts for our Tuesday’s golf croquet. Welcome back Mal Smith and Doreen Whitworth! They have not lost their touch. They each won three games after a long absence from the sport. It was a great effort to come back and carry on where they left off. Other winners of three games were John Browne, John Job, Kevin Rubie and Bill Scott. Two of the closest games were between Lorna Field and Merv Langfield with 7, who defeated Ruth Cheney and John Allegri with 6. The other close game was between Doreen Whitworth and Mary Hodges with 7, who defeated Colleen Liebich and Evelyn Mahlo with 6. Members were notified that Saturday’s game had been cancelled due to top dressing of the courts. A further bulletin advises that all games have been cancelled until further notice but we will hopefully be back on the courts before the Christmas break. Enjoy the break and introduce yourself to some other activities, like... Christmas shopping! By Anne and Harley Stewart

& SPORTS INJURIES CENTRE

Keeping you fit for life

Swimmer’s Shoulder Part 1

With the weather warming up swimming is an ideal way to get a full body workout. Overuse injuries in the shoulder and neck are common though, due to the repetitive nature of swimming. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a ring of cartilage around the socket to make the joint more stable. Around this is a loose joint capsule that is reinforced with ligaments and muscles. Because the shoulder is a very mobile joint it relies on the action of these muscles and ligaments to maintain stability. These muscles are called the rotator cuff and consist of four muscles that work together to keep your shoulder centred in its socket. So, if swimming strengthens the shoulder muscles why do so many swimmers have shoulder problems? The simple answer is due to the repetitive nature of swimming. The more complex answer lies in the fact that many swimmers don’t have good stroke technique and those that do can still have problems because the swim stroke (in particular freestyle), mainly strengthens the shoulder internal rotators and adductors. This causes muscle imbalance, leaving the scapular stabilisers and external rotators relatively weak and joint laxity increases. The rotator cuff then must work harder to keep the shoulder centred in the socket. When the already relatively weakened external rotators fatigue, the ball of the shoulder joint moves forward and the tendon of the rotator cuff muscles is pinched between the bones as the hand is raised above shoulder height. Next column I will cover some practical ways to prevent this happening and what to do if you already have impingement problems. For the fitness of you. Linda Reilly
