BRIDGING THE GAP... The Thank A Farmer For Your Next Meal initiative was the brainchild of Forbes local, Sam Johnston and Jim Honner from Jugiong.

From Bush To City And Back Again

Forbes born and bred, Sam Johnston has created a significant footprint for himself in the big city. This through his innovative joint venture with Jim Honner, namely Thank A Farmer For Your Next Meal. The organisation started mid 2014, has brought enormous awareness to city people of the daily realities people within the agricultural industry are faced with. Thank A Farmer For Your Next Meal aims to further promote Australian agriculture and Australian Primary Producers to a wider audience through the medium of pictures in order to attempt to close the gap between producer and consumer, city and bush.

One could say they are getting their message across, with a large percentage of their 90,000 social media followers being from metropolitan areas and also not directly involved with agriculture. “We wanted to positively contribute to the agricultural sector whilst based in Sydney as we saw first hand how bad the gap between city and bush was,” said Sam. “There was a lot of negative information floating around on social media and it felt like farmers and primary producers were always defending their actions rather than promoting them and being proud of what they do on farms,” he continued. THUMBS... MAYORAL NOTES The political race has stepped up a notch with the Meet the Candidates for the seat of Riverina held on Tuesday night. Pre-polling starts in Forbes on 11th May and will take place at St John’s Anglican Church from 9am to 4pm, not Town Hall as it has in previous years. Forbes Shire Council hosted the Mining and Energy Related Councils meeting this week. Mayors and General Managers from 22 councils converged on Forbes to discuss various subjects including the Voluntary Planning Agreement we are a part of, the adoption of the Coal Seam Gas Policy and discussions on university partnerships on modelling social licence. This week was Heritage Week in Forbes and what a wonderful celebration of our town’s history it has been. Congratulations to the Forbes Post Office for receiving the auspicious Forbes Medal for their wonderful renovation of this magnificent building. I have also heard great reports of the Permabulating in the Park session conducted by our local historian Rob Willis last Sunday.

It wouldn’t be complete without the final instalment of Doctor’s Panels being presented last night. This year, the panels tell the story of the Forbes Hospital, Private Hospitals and Aged Care in our town. I encourage you all to pop up to the hospital and have a look at them all.

THUMBS UP To the team at Life Pharmacy Forbes for going above and beyond and serving me from my car as I am unable to walk.

THUMBS UP To Darren from Jelbarts Tyrepower for coming to my house on Saturday morning when his business was closed for the week to repair my tyre which had a screw in it.

THUMBS DOWN To those who trespass on people’s property, stealing much loved plants and adornments.

THUMBS UP To the person or people that found my husband’s wallet in Forbes and handed it in to the local police. Good to see that there is still honest people around.

To finish the week, please join me in welcoming many more visitors to town for Vanfest. I hope you all enjoy the festival and our lovely town. God Bless. Your Mayor, Phyllis Miller

The tour started at the Rotunda with the gentle sounds of the Forbes Town Band brass quartet playing in the background. The stories included the many characters who have influenced the various items within the Park; such as the pathway from the Court House directly in line with the Vandenberg Hotel. There was the tale of the man who scaled the flagpole on the Town Hall to install the wire and what prominent monument in the park could have been a trough for dogs and horses. All of these were retold with the audience adding their memories to the mix.

National Library of Australia historian and Forbes local, Rob Willis lead curious attendees on a stroll around Victoria Square for the first of the Heritage Week events planned.

Investing In Farmers And Agriculture The Government continues to support farmers facing hardship as drought and flood hit farmers in various parts of our nation, whilst aiming to boost our exports. The Government is providing $6.3 billion in assistance and concessional loans to support those affected by drought and $3.3 billion to support those affected by flood. This includes expanding the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund and establishing a new $5 billion Future Drought Fund to support drought resilience projects. The Government continues to support farmers receiving Farm Household Allowance. From 1st July farmers on FHA will be able to discount or exempt the sale of livestock from the FHA income test when it’s invested in a Farm Management Deposit. Australia’s agriculture industry has been given another boost by the Government, with $29.4 million worth of measures that target sectors with high export growth potential. Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, David Littleproud said the Government continues to target investment where it would bring the biggest boost to agriculture. “We produce the best food and we need to give our farmers as many markets as possible to send it to. Free trade deals decide the tariffs but we still need to negotiate protocols to send our produce across which satisfy the importing country we won’t bring pests or disease,” said David. “The Government is also investing $6.8 million over four years to extend the Agricultural Trade and Market Access Cooperation (ATMAC) program – an initiative of the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper. “The ATMAC program is there for large industries and producers. It has successfully broken down technical trade barriers and improved access to premium markets returning dividends for our farmers,” said David.

Crunching Cattle Price Grid Numbers Cattle producers now have access to a free online tool which allows them to quickly compare the prices on offer for direct consignment to a range of processors and feedlots. The tool, located on the new AgCentre website (www.agcentre.com.au), is compatible with smart phones and laptops and is the brainchild of two mates, Forbes Norton and Chris Hourigan. Producers and their agents simply gain a login to the tool for free and then punch in the details of cattle they want to sell including numbers, liveweight, location, EUstatus and breed. The tool will then quickly compare the prices on offer in real-time from the publicly-available grids of major processors and feedlots including Teys, Thomas Foods, Bindaree, Borthwicks and NH Foods. The AgCentre tool also provides an estimate of transport costs to various abattoirs and feedlots.

Forbes Norton said the tool allowed producers and their agents, processors and feedlots to connect with each other more easily. “There is no need for producers to seek out (individual) price grids by phone, email or fax,” said Forbes. “You put in the details and it shows you live prices for all those public grids.” He said the tool enabled producers to discover the best price and estimated overall net returns for their cattle and then can make contact with the processor or feedlot to discuss a sale or get more information. Forbes said the price discovery service had the potential to alleviate ACCC and Senate pressure to publish price grids and in turn mitigated the risk of regulatory intervention to force mandatory price reporting on the industry. Greater price discovery would also lead to better competition in the market, he said.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Following the one-week Easter recess, quantities increased this week with 43,053 bales on offer. With reduced volumes coming forward, combined with a 2% fall in the AUD, the larger offering did little to soften buyer demand. Main buyer interest was in the best/good style wools, spirited bidding on these types helped push prices up by 15-30 cents, which in turn helped push the AWEX NRI up by 18 cents, to close the week at 1997. Inferior style wools were not as well supported and lost further ground and when viewed in US dollar terms the NRI was actually 23 cents cheaper. Crossbreds again recorded healthy gains, with rises of 40-60 cents, pushing the 28 micron indicator further into record territory, and after tracking downward for the previous six weeks, merino cardings recorded positive movement, with general increases of 10-30 cents. Next week sees quantities reduce with 33,464 bales currently rostered for sale nationally. Source: AWEX

Emphasis On The Importance Of Preschool

Forbes Preschool Director, Amy Shine has applauded the highlighting of preschool education in the Federal election with a proposal to commit 15 hours of subsidised preschool to every three year old in Australia. “It is music to our ears to hear politicians universally acknowledging that 90 percent of a child’s brain development occurs before the age of five, so funding quality early education is one of the smartest investments our nation can make,” said Amy. “Forbes Preschool is firmly committed to making sure we can maximise the benefits of preschool, particularly for those at risk of educational disadvantage.” “We make it our priority to create an inclusive and accessible facility, we consistently keep our operating costs to a minimum so we can provide substantially subsidised or free preschool services for low income or financially slighted families,” said Amy. Through persistently seeking funding and

grants, Forbes Preschool is able to offer excellent early education and complementary services for $5 or less a day. It also has a history of waiving entire term fees for families during times of drought and other financial stressors. “It is just one way we can give back to our community who are always so generous and supportive of our preschool,” said Amy. Forbes Preschool is recognised as an industry leader and the Federal election proposal to slash childcare fees and introduce subsidised preschool is further evidence the organisation is continuing to operate proactively rather than reactively. “It is really significant that all children have some kind of preschool or early education. We make it our objective to try to ensure all children living in or around Forbes have access to quality early learning, either at our preschool or one of the other quality centres in town,” added Amy.

Sam was born 50km west of Forbes on a property called ‘Merriment’ and attended Corinella Public School. Later he moved closer to town to a property called ‘Walla Wallah’ approximately 20km west of Forbes and at 12 years old, he was off to boarding school in Sydney. Sam might have moved from the bush to the big city but it may seem he left his heart in the country. Sam studied and completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics at The University of Sydney and attained his Real Estate, Stock and Station Agent and Auctioneers licences during his last year of study. “I began a part-time work experience role with rural property specialists, Meares & Associates and was offered a full-time sales and marketing role once I graduated,” said Sam. Currently he is still working for the same company as a rural property sales and marketing specialist. Recently Sam was selected as a 2019 NSW RAS Rural Achiever. “This is something I wouldn’t have been able to do without starting up the Thank A Farmer movement,” added Sam. “Jim and I have also been lucky to speak at various events such as the 2018 BOSCARS Forbes Business Awards and the Henty Machinery Field Days.” Based on Sam’s reply about his future plans, it is clear that he is not intending on slowing down soon. He would like to continue to be a positive contributing force to closing the gap between producer and consumer and help those based in metropolitan based areas become more informed and aware of where their food and fibre comes from. “I would like to continue to target those who are unaware of what processes happen on farms and help them understand the sector and its practices to a greater extent through informative marketing,” he said. Good Scores In Monthly Medal The Monthly Medal, sponsored by Adept Plumbing, was played on Saturday with 70 players looking to take the honours. Andrew Dukes had a superb round to return the best score on the day. The A-Grade went to Andrew Dukes with a nett 68, despite missing a short 2-footer on the 18th. Runner-up was John Betland, finishing with a nett 71. The B-Grade was won by Bob Borger, nett 71, ahead of runner-up Tony Cogswell with a majestic nett 72. from Mudgee and previous champ, Danny Acret from Penrith. The Medal winners played well on the day but the range of scores in each grade was quite remarkable, especially when a name is put beside a score. Best to say that for some players, they have had better days, much better days. There was no Stableford Medley on Sunday due to the playing of the Forbes Ladies Open, in which over 70 players participated, representing 19 clubs. On Sunday, 10 Forbes golfers attended the Young Men’s Open. The winner on the day shot a Scratch 70 score, but none of our Forbes guys did all that well, with the best of our boys being Steve Betland on scratch 75. Andy Dukes, Digit McAuliffe and Peter Dawson had 76 but the others quite a way back. The Forbes Men’s Open is steadily approaching, with a 4BBB set for Saturday, 18th May and the Open on 19th May.

On Saturday 25 May 2019, Cowra Council with the assistance of Local Land Services and Cowra RSL will host a ceremony and the planting of a grove of trees honouring the local men and women who served and fell during WW1. The commemoration will commence at 9.00am on Evans Street where descendants of the fallen men and women, and those who wish to honour the sacrifice made by them, may take part in planting a tree for each fallen service personnel. Of the 560 men and women who served in the First World War, 77 did not return and a tree will be planted in honour of each of these service men and women. The tree planting will be followed by a Mayoral reception and morning tea at 10.30am to be held at Cowra Council. For more information, please contact Kate Alberry or Cassandra Gailey on (02) 6340 2040. RSVP by May 20 to attend. For a list of the fallen, please visit www.cowracouncil.com.au
